Giving kids what they need to thrive ... now and in the future

2013

A year in review:

2013 was a busy year for Eastside Baby Corner, one filled with consderable growth and meaningful changes. Your belief in EBC fueled every step along the way, empowering EBC to reach more kids than ever, to give them the “stuff” they need to be nourished, healthy and ready to learn. Kids like the children who enrolled in a Bellevue school last year. Their single, low-income grandma worked hard to feed the three children but couldn’t stretch her income far enough. She needed diapers for the middle child with special needs – a $9.00 package to have diapers for day and night was a huge challenge. One child stayed home the day after his only shoes became too wet and soiled to wear in the chilly fall weather. EBC gave two extra pairs of shoes and several packages of diapers to help out grandma and the kids. The kids are in school and grandma has a little less worry and more hope. Renovating the Hub, hiring a paid executive director and becoming a regional diaper bank gave EBC the resources to help this family and many, many more. Your support through collection drives, volunteering and financial donations filled the shelves and an average of 900 orders each week. You made it possible for the staff and volunteers to respond to requests like this: “I need clothes for a 5 year old homeless girl-Elizabeth L. 65 pounds, size 8, shoe size 12. She is living in car and motel now. She needs underwear, winter clothes, jackets but no toys since the car is small. They don’t have laundry, so please give her more sets if possible. Thanks.” Elizabeth got the warm clothes (including extras) and a

backpack filled with small toys she can transport in the car or to the motel. Kids don’t stop being kids because they don’t have a home. With your support, EBC has supplied goods to three more programs than in the previous year, and lifted ordering limits for diapers for all partners. In 2013, we gave out 30% more goods, including almost 200,000 more diaper changes than in 2012. We filled more than 90% of all received orders, including all orders for diapers, pack-nplay cribs, formula, food and car seats. Thank you for helping kids to thrive.

EBC brings on board first paid Executive Director In January 2013, the EBC Board of Directors named Renee Zimmerman as its first paid Executive Director. Founder and outgoing Executive Director of 22 years, Karen Ridlon, has taken on the role of Executive Director Emeritus. She continues to serve as a lifetime member of the Board and works diligently to nurture key relationships for the organization as well as provide partner support and order monitoring. Renee brings to the position over 17 years of professional and personal experience in creating stronger communities, along with a deep respect for the efficiency, teamwork and caring space that are the hallmarks of EBC. Renovating Hub space helps increase reach At EBC, we have a long history of being able to do a lot with very little. From operating for almost 20 years without paid staff, to purchasing safe and quality high-need items

at the lowest possible price, EBC has made big impacts with limited resources. The 2013 renovation of our office and Hub was another shining example of our resourcefulness, but also an example of the dedicated volunteers we have at EBC. The project, funded by Bellevue Christian Church and a grant from the D.V. and Ida J. McEachern Trust, and lead by a team of four core volunteers - Tim Sullivan, Greg Wineland, Pete Kraetsch, and Dick Scott - added more than 1,000 square feet of funtional space and 516 square feet of office space to the Hub. With the increased space we have been able to add more agency partners and programs, as well as expand the services we offer our current partners. Left: Tim Sullivan, Greg Wineland, Pete Kraetsch and Dick Scott lead the renovation project. Bottom Right: The project in progress. Below: Operations Manager, Madeline Fish stands in the new office space.

Thank you to these renovation sponsors:

Impact

What does it take for kids to thrive?

To thrive means not experiencing the toxic stress that can arise from living in persistent economic hardship or in crisis. Struggling families need the support of the community through schools, human service organizations and health-care providers to find their way. Eastside Baby Corner is an essential part of the safety net, giving kids basics such as clothes and shoes, beds and bedding, car seats, baby food, school supplies, bikes, toys, books, strollers and diapers. We take it one step further, giving kids the “extras” Partner Programs Served that bring joy to 1 Substance Abuse their lives, and to 1 their families. One Refugees Unclassified 1 Issaquah-based Child Welfare (State, County) 3 provider said, “I Domestic Violence Programs, including housing 4 also wanted to let Inpatient Hospital Care 4 you know that I Early Intervention for Medically Fragile Children 5 picked up 2 bags Food Banks 10 of birthday gifts for Maternity Support 11 a family today... I Emergency Assistance 15 wish you could have seen this mom’s face. She Basic Needs 16 has no money for birthday gifts and the things I Family Support 16 picked up today will be the only gifts the children Schools Access to Services 26 receive…She looked through every item in the Housing Programs 27 birthday bags with such happiness and joy. She Early Learning 29 is so pleased her children will open gifts on their birthdays. I know so much effort and times goes into preparing everything. Such thoughtfulness. You don’t get to see the delight, the relief and the happiness it all brings. But I can assure you it does!”

Side by Side Northwest: A collaborative effort to diaper more babies In 2013 Eastside Baby Corner and WestSide Baby joined to form a regional diaper collaborative called Side by Side Northwest. Side by Side Northwest is committed to distributing two million diapers provided by Huggies through the 4

National Diaper Bank Network to kids throughout the Puget Sound Region. In 2013 the oganizations received and distributed one million of the two million pledged. They will give out the second donation of one million diapers in 2014.

Our well-oiled machine In 2013, the volunteers and staff of Eastside Baby Corner oversaw the successful distribution of more than 46,000 orders to 169 programs within 51 organizations assisting families in greater King County. Stop by on a Saturday and you’ll be amazed at the lightning fast sorting of infant clothes and the quick, efficient team that works to organize diapers for distribution. Join us on a Monday evening and you’ll see teams of volunteers hard at work selecting a full assortment of clothes for our clothing bundles.

Our workshop is staffed by volunteers on Mondays and Thursdays to assess every donated crib, high chair, bike and infant swing to ensure every item is in good, working condition prior to distribution. On Thursday mornings, the hub is bustling with volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure our bins are always full with seasonally appropriate, good quality clothing while the volunteer team who staff the Distribution Desk oversee the process of order pick up by our community partner care providers. Good Stewardship of Resources Your trust in our ability to manage your donations is taken seriously at EBC. Our mission to give kids the basics they need to grow and thrive is the measuring stick we use to decide how best to allocate resources. That is why the board chooses to purchase diapers, food, formula, car seats and cribs: little ones need these absolute essentials to keep them healthy and safe. We strive to bring in as much of the necessary supplies – clothes and toys – as possible through donations from the community, wisely purchasing what is needed to close the gap between donations and needs. You are helping kids today and tomorrow by sustaining the structure needed for services to continue. You keep the lights on, the doors open, and the people in place to support volunteers, raise awareness, coordinate drives and secure the future through fundraising.

Community Volunteers: Led by the example of Karen Ridlon, our founder and Executive Director Emeritus, volunteers continue to be the heart and soul of Eastside Baby Corner. Their continuing passion and expertise allows us to accept, process and distribute vast quantities of donations in an efficient and timely way.

Exceptional examples include our team of intake volunteers who carefully scrutinize every piece of donated clothing to make sure the bins are filled with seasonally appropriate items that are in good condition. We have an amazing team of workshop volunteers who assess every bike, stroller, crib and bed we receive. They are quick to make needed repairs and are willing to order and install recall kits when necessary. A team of core volunteers is committed to leadership roles in every department of our hub. Leadership roles include volunteer Facilities Manager, Diaper Inventory Manager, the Sock Manager, our Volunteer Training Guru and Volunteer Manager, the Doll Team, the Toy Team, The Infant Team, Sorting Leads and a School Backpack Manager. Their commitment is inspiring and they lead by example to inspire additional volunteers.

136 individuals and organizations hosted Drives in 2013 Donations: EBC’s ability to help thousands of children each year is made possible by the generosity of the local community. Nearly 89 percent of the items we give to the children we serve are gently-used items that have been donated by members of the community.

Events

EBC participated in 10 local events in 2013: Issaquah Parks & Recreation Hobby & Volunteer Fair, Highlands Days, Derby Days, SanMar Fun Run, Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank Health & Wellness Fair, Lake Washington United Methodist Church Block Party, Salmon Days & Parade, Green Halloween, KIN Alternative Giving Fair and #GivingTuesday. These events allowed us to introduce the work of EBC to the community and share ways for everyone to participate in giving kids a better start in life. We also hosted three of our own events: Tribute to Karen Ridlon dinner, the 4th Annual Pants Party and the 4th Helping Kids Thrive Annual Luncheon. EBC-hosted events help us raise funds, collect high-needs items and show our appreciation for those who make our work possible.

We help kids thrive by: ► helping children feel safe, secure and confident through nutrition, school-preparedness (books

in every bag of clothes), health and safety items ► preventing child abuse—it is hard to be a loving parent if you don’t have a dry diaper for a fussing baby, or food for a hungry little one...we help by making sure parents have what they need to care for their children ► giving immediate help: orders received on a Thursday are processed and ready for pickup the following Thursday. “...To have such a resource to help meet families’ basic needs is an amazing relief for families who are already going through so much!” Head Start Provider ► “helping the helpers”—unlike most other agencies, we dispense directly to qualified family-assistance provider partners, giving these professionals what they need to help vulnerable kids and families ► keeping families in their homes—we help prevent homelessness by taking away some of the recurring expenses that break budgets and push families over the edge

Eastside Baby Corner makes a positive difference in the lives of children and families in need. We do this by collecting and purchasing children’s items and distributing them, free of charge, through local social service agencies.

We give families help and hope.
