Celebration in October

W

here has the summer gone! It doesn’t seem possible that it is already September. Having the freedom to participate in activities in a normal manner is an invitation to go and do more. Understanding what we missed during the shutdown helps us appreciate being extra busy and makes time fly. This summer was special for those who attended the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference, and many have stayed busy representing the Shorthorn Breed at state fairs and county shows across the country. This participation is essential to keep our breed before the public and these activities present opportunities to display the breed to every aspect of the industry and consumer. This year marks the beginning of the 150th anniversary celebration of the 1872 formation of the American Shorthorn Association. There are many activities in place acknowledging this tremendous achievement - 150 years serving Shorthorn breeders and being beef breed association. In conjunction with the American Royal Show in Oct., the Annual Meeting will be the kickoff to the 150th Year Celebration. Mark Oct. 22nd & 23rd on your calendar - the American Royal National Shorthorn Show is Friday,

the 22nd and at 5:00pm, the ASA staff will host a Breeders Happy Hour social at the ASA Office in Kansas City with drinks and hors d’oeuvres. This is an excellent opportunity to drop by the office, see the staff and enjoy some Shorthorn fellowship with other breeders. During this time, we will unveil some special 150th Celebration items. First and hot of the press is the “Shorthorn and the American Cattle Industry” book. This is a must have hardcover coffee table book that takes you from the beginning of the breed to current time. It explains the relationships of the breed to the industry from its beginning. The 270 pages of Shorthorn history is full of photos and interesting information. You can make an advance purchase of the book online through the ASA website for a discount and then pick up your copy at the Annual Meeting, the North American in Louisville or at the Cattlemen’s Congress in OKC, Okla. This is a Limited Edition so be sure to order yours. We plan to display an Original Water Color Painting by C.J. Brown honoring 150 years of the ASA. We will unveil this masterpiece at the social and offer the opportunity to purchase prints. This will be a special evening of Shorthorn reminiscing and surveying the future.

On Saturday, Oct. 23rd at the Hilton Airport, we will start the day with our Educational Forum. This year we will focus on the history of the breed with legends sharing stories and speakers explaining how we have fit into the industry. Some Shorthorn Trivia will be asked to see how much you know about the breed. In the afternoon we will hold the Annual Meeting followed by a social and the Awards Banquet. We will present last year’s and this year’s awards including the Builder of the Breed. This event is a great time for sharing, learning from fellow breeders and gaining ideas for the future. We will take a look at the history and see what we may need to bring back to help our breed grow. Be sure to register for the forum and awards banquet online at the ASA website. The Shorthorn breed is moving and changing constantly as our industry changes. I want to leave you with this thought: “Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be.” - John Wooden. Make plans to join this celebration with the Shorthorn Family in October! =

Beef Business

Matt director of Woolfolk performance programs

A Premium Product The move from Missouri to Iowa has come with many benefits, but avoiding writer’s block is not one of them. As I stare at my screen, I am interrupted every few moments by a stubby legged officemate (our Corgi) carrying a stuffed toy duck, wanting someone to toss it down the hall. The only thing that makes Gus happier than fetch is a four-wheeler ride, so it’s a good day in his world. While Gus is a good morale booster and supervisor in the home office, he’s a lousy sounding board for article ideas. However, I think the fetch break was what I needed to get to this topic. In July, the revamped ASA Genetic Improvement Committee held their first meeting. The topic of discussion centered around how the commercial bull buyer was spending their dollar on Shorthorn genetics. Breeders shared their experiences on what traits, characteristics, or requirements their customers focused on to pay a premium for a bull. While every breeder shared a slightly different story, there was a common thread of what the Shorthorn bull customer asked for. Phenotypic traits came up multiple times. Maternal phenotypes were brought up even more, with discriminating buyers asking about the dam and grandam’s feet and legs, fleshing ability, and udder quality. As I listened, it became evident to me that the bull buyer is looking to the Shorthorn to produce cows for the herd. Other points of emphasis varied among breeders, from the need for genomic testing, pre weaning growth, carcass quality, or feed efficiency. Is the variation in other traits of emphasis between breeders a problem? If you ask me, it’s far from a problem and more of an opportunity. Customers with slightly different asks of their bull supplier challenge the breeder to make Shorthorn cattle with some uniqueness to them. If every Shorthorn breeder raised cattle that were the same type both genetically and phenotypically, it is harder to have the 12

pieces in the gene pool to improve these cattle. Our preferences in pickup truck manufacturers are different, but we still use pickups because of what they offer as a farm vehicle. It’s ok if the commercial bull buyer views Shorthorn bulls and pickup trucks similarly, as long as they keep buying both here in the United States. I analyzed the results of bull sales in the breed for 2021. I wondered if there were trends across the population that could be identified as premium-generating pieces. I focused on EPDs and phenotype for this quick study, as all that data comes from the same source (either the weekly genetic evaluation or my personal evaluation of the bull). As far as genetic trends, bulls that excelled in calving ease traits commanded a significant premium. Across sales, calving ease bulls averaged from $200-400 more than the sale average. Bulls that didn’t qualify as calving ease sires averaged below the sale average on every auction. Trends were not as consistent for bulls based on their growth, maternal, or carcass genetic predictors, but each category brought a premium price in at least one sale. That’s another sign that not every buyer wants the exact same Shorthorn product. It’s no surprise that phenotypic quality generates more dollars on sale day. When I go to a bull sale, I score each animal on a 1 to 5 scale. Bulls scored a 1 are the kind that shouldn’t be in the catalog as a bull (few in number), and 5’s (breed elite prospects) are also pretty rare. Looking at the vast majority of bulls being “2’s, 3’s, and 4’s”, it’s no surprise that 4 scored bulls bring more than 3’s and 2’s. In some cases, 4’s (purebred herdsire quality) outsold the average sale price by $1,500-1,800. The good quality commercial bulls (scored a 3) outpace their “just bull” counterparts (2’s) by $400-700. I realize I am not sharing anything that a good cattle breeder doesn’t already understand. I do think it illustrates an interesting point that the notion of commercial buyers

shorthorn country = september 2021

not emphasizing phenotype isn’t exactly reflected by where the money gets spent. There were bulls I graded as a “4” selling into commercial herds at every sale I attended. Regardless of your focus in the industry, good looking cattle help grow your sales receipts. When visiting with some breeders prior to the committee meeting, I asked them what percentage of their bulls were selling to commercial producers. The responses I got varied from half to 90 percent, but all of them agreed that most of their bulls are leaving the registered Shorthorn population. The breed is in a prime spot if producers outside our association are the main buyer of our commercial product. The 2021 sale season was really strong for the Shorthorn breed, and it appears to be driven by commercial interest at a lot of firms. While it’s not realistic to expect Shorthorns to rival breeds with 8 to 10 to 20 times our registrations in terms of bulls in the marketplace, I am optimistic we can grow the reach and quality of our product. Have you taken the time to look at what information drives your customers to spend more on cattle at your place? Are you producing cattle that better fit what your buyer is willing to pay for? Take time to self-evaluate and reach out to someone on staff or a breeder you admire to learn how to work towards taking that next step. We want to help you move your market forward. A good place to start would be joining the next Genetic Improvement Committee discussion on Wednesday, September 8 at Noon Central. We will be continuing with the discussion that started in the July meeting. Shoot me an email (matt@shorthorn.org) if you would like to join us. My short-legged office buddy has returned with his duck, so I suppose he’s saying I’ve earned a break from writing. It’s time to enjoy those little, yet so important, things in life. =

A Busy and Exciting Fall Ahead The show season has started to get into full swing. Cassie and myself have had a blast traveling to all the superregional and national shows this year so far. We have really enjoyed getting to know breeders and connecting faces with the voices we talk to over the phone while in the office. We look forward to continuing to make those connections with breeders as we travel to more shows this fall. It seems like time is only speeding up and before we know it the American Royal and Annual Meeting will be here. We ask that if you are having any stalling requests for the American Royal, please get those sent into Cassie or myself via email. We will try our best to accommodate everyone needs.

Just a reminder that that check-in for the American Royal is Wednesday October 20th, 2021. Since the Shorthorn breed has had a gradual increase in numbers, which is a great thing to see, they have broken our show into two days. Thursday, October 21st, 2021, will be the Junior Purebred Shorthorn Show and Junior ShorthornPlus Show. Open Purebred Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus Shows will follow on Friday, October 22nd, 2021. We are excited to kick off our 150th Year Celebration at the Annual Meeting which will be held Saturday, October 23rd, 2021. There will be a social held at the ASA Office the evening of Friday, October 22nd, 2021, to kick off the celebration and we invite all who can

attend to join us. There are many things to look forward to this year at annual meeting such as Shorthorn Trivia, awarding the Regional Show Winners from 2019- 2020, awarding the National Show Winners from 2019- 2020 and 2020-2021, and the launch of the 150th Shorthorn Book. We are excited to kick the 150th year off! Make your weekend plans now to join us first at the American Royal to watch or participate in the show and then at the Annual Meeting. This is also your reminder if you received a ballot for the delegate election process, to please be sure to return the fully completed ballot back to the ASA office by September 7, 2021! =

Intent to Run Members Announce Intent to Run for ASA Board of Directors John Sonderman - My family and I currently reside on a small farm near Columbus, Nebraska, where we have been raising purebred Shorthorn cattle since 1996. The focus of the operation is to sell bulls to commercial and purebred operations, as well as open heifers. Our cattle are more moderate framed with a focus on volume and easy fleshing. I have served on the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors for the last three years. I am proud of the increased awareness of the Shorthorn breed that has occurred due to our commitment to marketing via the American Rancher, increased investment in collecting performance data and genomic data, and increased interest in the purchase of Shorthorn bulls by commercial operations. I have served as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Nebraska Shorthorn Association for more than 10 years and the Committee Chair of the Genetic Evaluation Committee with the American Shorthorn Association. Our children participated in several Shorthorn Junior Nationals and multiple Nebraska Junior Beef Expo Shows and contests. My travels with work have allowed me to visit over 40 different Shorthorn breeders in the United States and Canada. This has allowed me to see different types of Shorthorn cattle managed for different markets and in different environments. My industry experience includes over ten years working in the US feed industry in the area of nutrition and reproductive management in cattle and swine operations. I have B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of NebraskaLincoln, and a PhD from Colorado State 16

University in Reproductive Physiology in cattle. Presently, I am employed as the Business Leader of Multiplication & Technical Services for DNA Genetics, which provides over 40% of the terminal sire and 20% of the maternal genetics to the commercial swine industry in North America. My primary role is to make sure customers get the support and research they need to optimally manage our genetics. Our business has an extensive performance testing program at the nucleus level and at the commercial level that drives our genetic improvement, therefore creating value for customers. We use genomics to help increase the prediction accuracy of the performance of our boars and gilts. My vision for the future of the Shorthorn breed involves continued support for the tremendous Junior program that has been built. Developing a passion for Shorthorn cattle in young people will help ensure a strong future by developing Shorthorn leaders of the future. It has led my children to want to continue our herd in the next generation. My vision for the future of genomics and overall performance testing in this great breed of cattle is to show the value of the Shorthorn breed in commercial cow herds and in the feedlot. My commercial customers like the docility, hybrid vigor and stayability that Shorthorn genetics bring to their cow herds and the economical growth that creates more profit in their feedlots. My children’s experience with the Junior program confirms its value to the breed. I also believe that the Shorthorn breed has an important place in the cattle industry. My background working with commercial beef and swine operations allows me to understand how technology and performance testing can be used to promote the Shorthorn breed in that

shorthorn country = september 2021

segment of the industry. I would feel privileged to help chart the future of this great breed. Jeff Bedwell - It is truly both humbling and an honor to be asked by the Nominating Committee to run for an available position for the Board of Directors of the American Shorthorn Association. I absolutely look forward to the opportunity but certainly do not take the invitation and the responsibility of that commitment lightly. Like many Shorthorn enthusiast, my heritage with shorthorn cattle runs deep. Our daughter Jennifer is at least the 5th generation of our family’s involvement with this breed of cattle and the great people that are stewards of it. In the time that my family and I have been involved the Shorthorn Breed, I have never been as optimistic about its future or as proud of its past. For me, I become motivated and enthused by the progress in so many different directions that I see from our breeders and from the support they receive from the Association that has helped to facilitate the advancement of our Shorthorn genetics, their marketing, and the personal development of both our junior and adult members. In my view, the American Shorthorn Association has positioned itself to be one that is providing cutting edge tools and infrastructure that will insure stay ability for the Shorthorn breed and its breeders in a very competitive beef business. At a time when many social concerns about agriculture and the food we help provide may be in question

by our end user customers, I think we must all utilize these tools and this information to tell our story regardless of if they are buying a turnout bull, a show heifer or considering an animal protein or a vegetarian diet. To those that have had the vision to collect and compile the information necessary for our breed to be viewed favorably to other beef producers and the end user beef consuming public (and non-beef consumer as well) I say Thank You. As we celebrate the 150th anniversary as “America’s First Breed Association”, It seems to me a great time to reflect on our heritage for in my view we have come a long way. At the same time, we must prepare for challenges ahead. It seems imperative to me that our Association continue the efforts put forth to educate our junior and senior members, our customers, and our adversaries of the many advantages that our Shorthorn cattle, our Shorthorn people and our American Shorthorn Association provides. If seen fit to do so by the membership, I look forward to the opportunity to serve that membership and its Association with all the energy, vision, and experience that I can provide. Thank you for your consideration and I greatly appreciate your support for this position as a Board of Director for the American Shorthorn Association. Toby Jordan - Toby Jordan coowns and operates Waukaru Farms with his wife Jodi their four children and brother Mark, which has farmed since 1895 and registered purebred Shorthorn cattle since 1902 in Rensselaer, Ind.

Toby received a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University. At OSU, Jordan was a member of the 1996 Livestock Judging Team, which was named National Team of the Year. During college, Toby worked for Dr. Brad Morgan, gaining experience at beef and pork packing plants while assisting in grading and retrieval of meat samples from test carcass on numerous research projects. He also assisted the Meats Processing Manager, Jake Nelson, at the then new Oklahoma Food and Agricultural Products Research and Technology Center. After college, Toby was hired as the Show and Sale Cattle Manager at Pollard Farms LLC in Enid, OK, where he was responsible for all production sales, registrations, performance records, and the breeding, buying, and selling decisions at that Angus operation. At Pollard Farms, Toby continued to develop the commercial bull market and designed a “buy-back” program for commercial cattle sired by Pollard Farms bulls in order to collect carcass and performance values on sold progeny and increase demand in future bull sales. In 2002, Toby returned to Rensselaer, Indiana, to Waukaru Farms to manage the cow herd. Today, Toby and his wife, Jodi, along with their four children, Jack, Chloe, Charlotte, and Jemma, are integral with his family’s operation of 225 purebred cows and 1200 acres of row crops. Jordans host the longest running female production sale in Indiana every fall. In the spring, Waukaru’s “The Gathering” markets 60 bulls throughout Canada and US. Also, top genetics are marketed through the National Shorthorn Sale and The Fall Harvest. The inclusion of ultrasound, carcass data, growth information, and genomically enhanced EPDs have been the reason behind the rapid expansion of this market. Toby’s father Barry credits

him with continued development of Waukaru’s bull market and structuring their annual bull sale, which sends bulls into many purebred and commercial herds throughout the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, South America, and Australia. Toby is a solid proponent of continual improvement of cattle with all tools available, including performance data, obtaining carcass data from steer feedouts to prove his sires, and also honing customer service and marketing savvy. To this end, Toby has been an active participant in regional grazing seminars, and the annual Beef Improvement Federation convention. Toby currently is a director of the American Shorthorn Association and is seeking re-election. Toby has been a director on the board of the Indiana Forage Council and Indiana Shorthorn Assoc. He was previously named Young Cattleman of the Year by the Indiana Beef Cattle Association, and has represented Indiana on the NCBA Young Cattlemen’s Tour. Toby has been asked to speak about using technology with beef production systems in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Argentina, Beef Improvement Federation, Cornbelt Cow Calf Conference, and others. Has served on and chaired committees such as the Commercial Marketing Committee for the American Shorthorn Association, International Trade Committee for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Indiana Forage Council, and Indiana Beef Cattle Association. He has judged many national, state, county and regional cattle shows for several breeds, as well as the Royal National Show in Brisbane, Australia. =

a message from the

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the pages of the 2021 Fall Harvest Shorthorn Production Sale Catalog. This is our ninth edition of the Fall Harvest Shorthorn Production Sale. It has been a pleasure to work with sale hosts, Bryan & Marti Warner, Warner Ranch; Bill & Ron Bos, Sha Ron Farms, Jay Cech & Family and J. Adam Edmundson, Shalimar Ranch the guest consignors. We have learned and grown through the first eight sales as we work to offer you a quality, reliable & practical set of Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus cattle. It is our goal to continue to improve our breeding programs to provide genetics that will work for you, our valued customers. We realize 2021 has continued to be challenging due to the COVID-19 pandemic and weather conditions in many areas. However, the spring sale season and the summer feeder cattle videos have been strong with solid demand at the commercial and breeding cattle levels, reflecting optimism for the fall sale season. The Beef Complex has turned the corner with strong domestic beef sales; increased exports and fewer cow numbers point to solid profitability opportunities for all of us. A sound investment in quality genetics as we move forward will continue to be the foundation of your ability to pursue profitable beef production. If I can be of any assistance as you study this information packed sale catalog, please feel free to contact me at any time. Sincerely, Alan Sears Sears Marketing Services

a letter from the

Dear Shorthorn Friends, Welcome to the 2021 Fall Harvest Sale. This sale will feature a large group of quality Shorthorn Bred Cows / Bred Heifers / Heifer Calf Pairs & Open Heifer Calves that represent some of the top genetics in the breed. Our fellow consignors and friends are offering the best of their herds. Some may feature a different genetic focus or type of cattle, but all will display strong Shorthorn quality cattle. You will find excellent Shorthorn females throughout this sale. There will be cattle available that will be suitable for a wide variety of programs. The cattle at Warner Ranch Shorthorns, in Wyoming, are managed like a commercial herd. A cow is expected to raise a calf every year and maintain her body condition efficiently. Our program has focused on calving ease and maternal strength. We have selected cattle which possess plenty of natural muscle and are structurally sound, with much consideration given to good feet and legs, and udders which will hold up over a cow’s breeding career. Our cattle represent the strong influence of the Canadian Shorthorn bulls we have chosen as our herd sires as well as other outstanding domestic Shorthorn bulls that we have selected to impact our herd. If you are looking for a solution to lower birth weights and moderate frame size, please consider these females. Thank you for taking time to study our sale catalog. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, September 26, 2021 in Columbus, NE. Bryan and Marti Warner and Friends

This line of cattle was developed over many generations in the Cal Poly herd of California under the watchful eye of the late great stockman, Bill Jacobs. Sired by Waukaru Orion 2047, Cumberland 6091 is a bold sprung, stout featured female that still has the soft lines and soundness of skeleton from her maternal ancestors. Her sire Orion 2047 was the highest profitability sire in the 2015 Tri-County Carcass Futurity and ranked second over all the at least 14 breeds represented. Orion 2047 accomplished this task without having any black hided sired steers to capture a CAB premium, though most of his 2,500+ competitors did.

Her 2019 daughter sired by South Starr Red Rx S514 is at the top of her group of first calf females and is nursing a top replacement female as well. Last fall, Marion Dlite 6152 weaned off a set of identical bulls that sold in our 2021 sale; one going into southern Mississippi and the other into southeast Ohio. As we have watched Latigo 0033 develop, every day we are impressed with his flawless skeleton, ruggedness of bone and circumference of foot with more depth of heel and symmetry between toes than most. Additionally, being stout and masculine about his skull and muzzle, and being up headed on the move with flex and athleticism in every stride gives confidence that this is an important bull to watch. Latigo 0033’s naturally calm nature, being from a dam that has never missed a beat, and his scrotal measurement of 40 cm at a year all insure we will keep a large portion of his daughters. His flawless balance and symmetry are even more monumental when coupled with his honest shape and power of muscle. These phenotypic traits match his faultless EPD profile.

Beef Blurb

Shelby director of youth activities, Diehm director of marketing & communications

I’ve Been Everywhere This summer has flown by since the completion of Junior National. It feels like I haven’t stopped moving or going somewhere for work events and a few personal trips. I watched my brother win Reserve Grand Champion Bull at his last Hereford Junior National in Kansas City. We wrapped up the IGS Summit Youth Conference at the end of July – you can read Faye’s article about that in the magazine! After the IGS Summit, I went straight to Agricultural Media Summit (AMS) at the Loews hotel in Kansas City. After AMS, I went on a mini vacation with my family to Lake Dardanelle in Arkansas and now I am writing this on the last day of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Convention. AMS is a work event I look forward to each year. It is an opportunity for me to network with industry professionals as well as learn on different topics to help me grow professionally. They have sessions that are all relevant to my job at the ASA. This year the first session I attended was ‘How do Writers Make a Compelling Story.’ This was a panel of journalists from different agricultural publications.

50

They discussed and answered questions on how to make stories more relevant and engaging to your audience. The next session was ‘Marketing your brand is more than milk,’ which was led by Seth Gunderson from Signal Theory, a marketing agency who worked with the local KC brand, Shatto Milk. They discussed how they made decisions on the marketing for Shatto and how the brand grew. After that, I learned about ‘3 Ways to Elevate Your Social Strategy,’ taught by Missy Young who works for a marketing agency called Broadhead. She discussed different social media trends and how to stay relevant as it is always changing. The last session I attended was a panel of industry leaders discussing professional development. This year, total attendance at NCBA was down but interest in Shorthorn cattle was up. We probably had more visitors at our booth this year than ever before. It was amazing how many people stopped by our booth to tell us they watched our show on American Rancher and are now interested in purchasing Shorthorns. They enjoyed learning the

shorthorn country = september 2021

positive attributes the breed has to offer their herds from the show and were excited to ask us questions about the cattle. Of course, we also had current members stop by the booth to say hello. These breeders would also chat with potential new members to give their perspective of the breed. It was nice having two of the ASA board members help answer questions in the booth this year. Every year we have people stop by who used to raise Shorthorns and still think they are some of the best cattle they ever had; many of them just don’t have cattle left. As always, it was a good few days in Nashville for the NCBA Convention talking to current and prospective members. We look forward to next NCBA Convention to be held February 1-3, 2022 in Houston, Texas. Now that NCBA is over, my travel schedule will begin to slow down until we start back up with show season. I look forward to seeing everyone in Kansas City, Missouri for the American Royal and Annual Meeting in October. =

Dirt Road

At the End of a

by Shelby Diehm, ASA

At the end of a red dirt road in a small town in western Oklahoma you can find a family-owned farm, established in 2010. Greg and Hunter George are a father and son duo who operate Double G Shorthorns in Hinton, Oklahoma. Greg got his start with the breed exhibiting Shorthorn cattle when he was young, predominantly showing steers. In 1982 he showed the Champion Steer at the Oklahoma 4H and FFA show – now known as the Oklahoma Youth Exposition - with a Shorthorn steer named Cecil. Greg shared the photo of his red and white steer with a smile on his face as he told his story of his love for the Shorthorn breed. “I love their demeanor and their color,” Greg said. “I loved how easily they handled when I exhibited them as a kid which is one of the things that brought me back to the breed. Now the excitement for me is when I go out in the morning or evening to see the new calves. Each one is unique.” 52

Greg and son, Hunter, are both independent pharmacists. They have nine pharmacies in the western Oklahoma area and the businesses take much of their time. Both Greg and Hunter attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) to obtain their pharmacy degrees. They chose pharmacy work because they enjoy helping people, and they really enjoy the retail environment in the small towns in which they practice. After spending 19 years working as a pharmacist, Greg decided it was time to get some land of his own. The land was originally purchased for hunting and fishing but he soon decided to buy

shorthorn country = september 2021

some cattle for a hobby on the farm. Once Hunter became involved, he quickly grew their herd from 15 to 70 head. Hunter worked to improve their herd after they bought their first few head of cattle. They kept replacements heifers and bought more donors and breeding cattle.

Even though they only have 70 head they continuously add new genetics and improvements. “We utilize EPDs and other technologies in our herd,” Hunter said. “We have found since we started that there is always something we can improve on and that is our goal.” They have worked to improve calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, and the spreads between them. They enjoy showing cattle, but they still earn their keep at the sale barn. Improving these EPDS has helped with both aspects – exhibiting and selling. Greg and Hunter have spent many hours on the road, traveling to Shorthorn sales and farms all over the country. They were looking for better genetics and bloodlines to add into their own herd.

“We have really enjoyed the time we get to spend on the road together,” Greg said. “We get off work, drive all night to get there just in time for the sale. We would change our clothes in the truck and go into the sale to see what we could find to add for our herd. We spent many hours together and I have many good memories from our road trips.” When they aren’t spending time improving their herd, they feed a few calves out to butcher for their family to have beef. They haven’t sold much beef yet but they continue to get more inquiries from people about purchasing beef especially following the pandemic. “The beef is superior to anything I have ever tasted even though I may be a little biased,” Greg said with a laugh. “When I cook steaks for friends, they

always say it is the best steak they have ever had. I tell them all it takes is salt, pepper and Shorthorn beef!” Hunter shared. The passion for the breed is evident with Double G Shorthorns, from their ambition to improve their herd to their love for the characteristics – beef, color, docility and more. As we drove back up the red dirt road from looking at their Shorthorn cattle, father and son continued to share their stories and memories as they look toward their future with the breed. =

Sadly, summer is coming to an end, kids are starting school again, and college students are headed back to campus. As always, summer flew by and was one to remember. Luckily before school and work, the junior board was able to meet up again to start planning new ideas for the 2022 Junior National Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference; to be held in Kansas City, Missouri. We started the weekend off with road tripping from Kansas City, Missouri, to Amarillo, Texas. It was a great time to catch up, make memories, and travel across a few states. The next day we had an end-of-summer meeting to talk about Junior Nationals, change a few contests, and think of new ideas for the following year. One of the topics we spent a long time on was fundraising since junior nationals are expensive to make happen. After thinking of a few ideas, we came up with a new fundraiser that we believe will be enjoyable and great. The fundraiser is going to be “Old Timer Showdown.” In this fundraiser, anybody can nominate somebody that is not a junior exhibitor, and they can either pay their way out of this event or show up. The goal for this fundraiser is to make it an exciting event so people have fun and enjoy a laugh. We will also continue the fundraiser with the cut-out cows and have them travel from stall to stall. We did change a few other things, so be on the lookout for those changes in the future. After this meeting,

the junior board was so excited about everything we changed because we feel like it will be very to all the exhibitors. After we finished that extraordinary and long meeting, we spent the night having an opportunity to meet some of the Gelbvieh Junior board for dinner at The Big Texan. We all had a great dinner and great conversations and were glad we could get to know each other more before Summit Conference was at full speed. For the next few days, the junior board had a great time meeting new and current Shorthorn juniors from all over the country. We also had an excellent opportunity to network with Simmental and Gelbvieh junior members. At the end of the week, I was very proud of my junior board members because they were so welcoming and made sure everybody was included in the different activities. A quote I learned from an early age was, “Nothing more exciting than meeting new people, hearing their stories, and being inspired.” It was a great week spending time will all my fellow board members and planning for junior nationals. I had a fantastic time attending the Summit Conference meeting new people, touring the city of Amarillo, visiting West Texas A&M University, and spending time with the best people in the best industry. I look forward to seeing everyone at shows this fall. =

Networking for the Summit in Amarillo by Faye Smith, AJSA Public Relations Officer

After a long, exciting summer, the American Junior Shorthorn Association Board of Directors, as well as other Shorthorn juniors, traveled to Amarillo, Texas for the Summit Leadership Conference. They were joined by members from the American Gelbvieh Junior Association and the American Junior Simmental Association for a four-day long excursion to learn more about being leaders in our respective organizations and educate ourselves on the beef industry. Our first day started off with arrivals, as well as many icebreakers to give us ample time to meet each other, and go past the awkward stages that come with leadership conferences. Luckily for us, the Shorthorn Board made the most of the Icebreakers, and lead right into our 56

evening with Dr. J.D. Ragland a speaker from Randall County Extension that gave us great advice on how to be better leaders and communicators. We ended our night with pizza and several very competitive card & board games. Tuesday, we lead off with starting our morning bus ride with Megan Mangold, the intern and speaker for Cultivate Agency that runs the social media campaign #cattletales. She was able to capture our whole event through that social media and had many of us participants tell our agricultural story. This led us to Canyon, Texas where we spent our morning at the West Texas A&M University Ranch. Here, we were able to see their research on cloning a Prime Yield Grade One carcass, as well as tour their student-ran feedlot.

shorthorn country = september 2021

We spent the rest of our day touring the new agricultural facilities at West Texas A&M, as well as their student meat packing facility, and listening to several professors speak on subjects that ranged from beef quality and palatability, beef harvest and fabrication to riskmanagement within the beef industry and agricultural leadership. For our last day, we spent the morning touring Wrangler Feedyard, ran by Cactus Feeders, learning about how commercial feedlots like Wrangler finish their cattle to the meat packer. They educated us on the care, feeding, and processing of cattle when they get into the feedyard. The attendees enjoyed seeing the large scale feedyard and learning how they operate. Our afternoon was spent with the Cactus Cares group, a philanthropy team

created by Cactus Feeders. As a group we learned how Cactus Cares teams up with local organizations such as Snack Pak 4 Kids, a food distribution network for lowincome students in the Amarillo area. We were able to visit SP4K, and hear from Dyron Howell the owner and operator, who was a past Texas Junior Shorthorn Association member and president. As a group we learned from the organization

and packed more than 2,000 snack bags for their summer weekend program. This week was such an amazing opportunity for juniors to connect with other breed organization members, and learn the importance of the beef packing and processing journey. Although I will be too old to attend the next Summit Conference in 2023, I truly advise all of our juniors to think about the importance

Dr. J.D. Ragland

of attending one of these events. I not only met new friends, but I became much closer with my team of junior board members and Shelby. Being able to jump out of your comfort zones to attend one of these events is one of the best things you can do in your youth. =

2021 Pioneer Breeder Award - TX Shorthorn Association Jim and Paula Archer, Pittsburg, began building their Shorthorn herd in 1994 with the purchase of 2 bred Shorthorn cows to add to their small commercial herd. They saw firsthand the gentleness of the breed and the great maternal traits of the cows. They also enjoyed the beautiful red color variations of the breed. Before long, they had a registered bull and were committed to breeding calves that would perform in the show ring and in the pasture of commercial operations. They were soon selling show calves to youngsters from all over Texas and from states across the western and southern U.S. At this same time, they were selling Shorthorn bulls and ShorthornPlus cows to commercial ranchers. Much of the breeding stock came from WHR Shorthorns. They credit Bill Rasor, Dr. Blair MacBeath and Dr. James Miner for their guidance in the early years of their operation. By 2010 their herd was over 40 Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus cows and several bulls representing some of the top bloodlines available: Marellan Super Dazzler, Rodeo Drive, Trump, Sonny and Bloodstone. Their most notable cow was WHR Jaz Demi Delight 2R58. Demi Delight was a top contender in the show ring winning Reserve Grand

Champion Female at Houston in 2004 and Champion Junior Female at the 2004 National Western. She was an All American Reserve designee for the National Shorthorn Association in 2004 and a Super Cow designee in 2009. Demi’s offspring continue to win top honors in breed competitions. Lone Star Cattle Company was a member of the American Shorthorn Association and Texas Shorthorn Association from 1998 thru 2017. Paula served as Vice President and President of TSA. She served on the TSA Board for 9 years. In 2007 they received the Progressive Breeder Award. In 2001 Jim and Paula were designated as the UpshurGregg County “Resident Conservation Farmer” by the Soil and Water District. Paula was a software sales executive for over 35 years. She worked for IBM during much of her career and retired in 2012. She is past president of Camp County Arts Council and a member of Twentieth Century Club. Jim taught chemistry at the college level for over 45 years. He was a

professor of chemistry for over 30 years at the Northeast Texas Community College. He retired in 2010. He is past president of Camp County Ambulance Service Board. He has been a member of Rotary International for over 35 years and served as District Governor in 201011. The Archer’s have 3 grown children - Cathy Boucher, Cypress, Texas; Suzy Murray, Sacramento, California; and Jeff Archer, Highland, California. They sold their Shorthorn herd in 2017, but continue to live on their ranch where they host gusts at their 3 vacation rental properties. =

2021 Progressive Breeder Award - TX Shorthorn Association Shelly Springer Spearman, Rockwall, Texas, began her journey with Shorthorn cattle in 1980 when her father, Stanley Springer, purchased 2 Shorthorn heifers at the Northeast Texas Shorthorn Sale - one for Shelly and one for her older sister, Sharon. That summer, he, his wife Diane, and the two girls attended their first junior show at the state Shorthorn show and field day hosted by J.W. Holmes, Tolar, Texas. Shelly was active in the Texas Junior Shorthorn Association and elected as a director in 1989 and served as secretary/treasurer from 19901992. She served as Texas Shorthorn Lassie Queen in 1990-91. Shelly graduated from Tarleton State University, Stephenville, and Andrew Spearman graduated from East Texas A & M University at Commerce. They were married in 1998 and have two children - Ethan, 18 and Ellee, 16. Shelly has served as queen chairman and is currently publicity officer for the Texas Shorthorn Lassies. The couple has

served as advisors for the Texas Junior Shorthorn Association the last 4 years. Their herd numbers 20 registered Shorthorn cows. They utilize artificial insemination to gain genetics to better their herd. Major sires used are Asset, Kane Captain and Fed Ex. With the popularity of the ShorthornPlus program, the couple have bred and raised several Plus females. Son Ethan showed a second place “Owned Plus Female” with SEE Miss Tara at the 2021 National Jr. Shorthorn Show in Louisville, Kentucky. Daughter Ellee showed a first place steer at Jr. Nationals with SEE Cat Daddy and a 4th place owned female with JSS SEE Denali. Ethan graduated from high school in 2021 and will be a freshman at Texas A & M University

in College Station in the fall. He plans to major in Ag Engineering. Ellee is serving as a Texas Shorthorn Lassie Princess and is the reporter for the Texas Jr. Shorthorn Association. Andrew is a senior construction inspector and Shelly is office manager for the Rockwall County Agri-Life Extension Service. =
