One Saturday morning Jake invited his best friends Ashley, Tom, and Ann over to play with his new rocket ship playset.

They packed water bottles, snacks, books and toys, then raced outside.

“This looks just like the rocket my dad flies, he’s an astronaut.” said Tom. Tom looked at Ann and asked, “I know you love to explore, what do you think?”

Ann didn’t look at Tom, but said with excitement “It’s so big, so big,

SO BIG!!!”

Ann has autism and sometimes repeats words, especially when she was excited.

After laughing they all started exploring the rocket ship! “I can see to the moon!”

“I can fly this, no problem!”

“Light speed ahead!”

“I wonder what all these buttons do!?”

Jake pressed the big red button and the rocket ship lit up and began to shake. Ann exclaimed, “Blast-off! Blast-off!

BLAST-OFF!”

“What was that?” asked Ashley “I don’t know!” replied Tom When Ashley looked out the window, she realized they were not in the backyard anymore and said,

“WE ARE ON THE MOON!”

“This is so cool! But, how are we going to get home? Mom will be mad if we aren’t home for dinner!” said Jake. “Tom, can you fly us home?” asked Ashley

Tom knew he could fly the rocket because he had seen his dad do it many times. “I can fly this, but my wheelchair doesn’t fit in the pilot seat.” Tom’s wheelchair sometimes makes doing things a little challenging but that never stops him.

“I know what we can do! Let’s move the things out from under the desk and use the books to raise the desk.” said Jake. The plan worked and Tom was able to fly the rocket ship and they began their mission home.

Tom assigned each friend an important job:

Ashley is our co-pilot and will control the speed,

Ann is our lookout and will repeat important alerts,

Jake is in charge of the radio and will call for help.

A few minutes into their mission Ann saw meteors coming towards them. Ann said “Watch out for the meteors! The meteors!

THE METEORS!”

Tom quickly turned the wheel and was able to avoid the dangerous meteors. “That was close! Thank you Ann” said Tom. Ann was happy knowing she protected the ship by warning Tom.

Ann alerted the crew each time they passed something new on their way towards Earth. They passed . . . . .

Jake used the radio to talk with the people in the other rocket ship. “Greetings, can you help me, and my friends make it back home? he asked.

In no time, the fellow rocket ship shined a light on Jake’s house on planet Earth.

“There is Jake’s house! Jake’s house! Jake’s house!” said Ann. “That’s right, there it is! We should be home in time for dinner!” said Tom .

“That other rocket ship was so helpful. Nothing can stop us now!” said Jake. Everyone was so excited, Tom turned the wheel towards Jake’s house and away they went.

As they got closer to earth, they began to hear loud beeping sounds and see flashing lights. It was coming from the controls so Tom and Ashley went to see what was wrong.

“The ship is getting too cold from the low temperature of space” Said Ashley “What should we do?” asked Tom.

While the alarms were going off, Ann began to flap her arms because the sound was very loud. She didn’t like it when there was too much going on at once.

Jake had seen this happen before and knew to get Ann’s noise canceling headphones.

They block-out the noise and this helps her calm down whem there is alot of excitement.

While that was happening Ashley had studied the controls and knew just what to do. She turned the big blue switch and the ship began to warm up. Ann said “Wow! That was awesome Ashley! Awesome Ashley!

AWESOME!”

Tom gently landed the ship just in time to see Jake’s brother coming out to get them for dinner.

They all raced inside for dinner, smiling from their big adventure.

They were able to work together to make it home safely from the moon!

Who knows what kind of adventure tomorrow will bring for Jake and his friends.
