Your media training program will be developed and led by the Institute’s media relations team. The team has years of extensive professional newsroom and broadcast experience.

Each media trainer has expertise in broadcast, print, or corporate media. The program was developed based on best practices taken from national training programs designed to teach media trainers how to train. Our controversy/crisis media training was created in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Media relations can help — whether it’s responding to an incoming media request about current events or crafting the best plan for pushing your research or project into the news. Learn how to effectively get your messages across and look polished on the national stage when you’re asked, “What does Georgia Tech think?”

Be as prepared as possible with Institute Media and Message Training.

Media and Message Training sessions are: • Effective: Good media interviews can result in national media exposure, potential research sponsors, and business or industry partners.

• Individualized: Media training sessions are targeted to address specific media interactions and tailored to your skill level.

• Comprehensive: Our various options cover virtually any situation that may arise.

• Efficient: Sessions are only an hour to an hour and a half, and there is no charge.

Media training is not presentation skills training. Media training has a different focus. If you are interested in enhancing your presentation skills, programs such as TechMaster’s or training classes offered through Human Resources will be more beneficial.

Training sessions Message Creation Make sure you’re telling your story in the most effective way possible in written materials, presentations, and interviews.

In this session, you will brainstorm about the most effective messaging and create language to achieve your desired result.

Message Refinement Develop concise and effective wording for working your message into an interview or presentation and tailoring it to resonate with various audiences, from your peers to the general public.

Presentation Tips Rehearse and refine your presentation to ensure that in real-world situations you are poised, polished, and ready to deliver your message for maximum impact.

Media Awareness Learn the importance of doing media interviews. What preparation is needed before an interview and what resources are available to you? You will learn why it is necessary to be responsive as well as receive general preparation tips.

Basic Media Training This session helps you get “media savvy” to avoid potential pitfalls and maximize opportunities in print, radio, and television interviews, with a practice interview at the end.

Advanced Broadcast Training It’s one thing when a reporter is listening; it’s another when the world is watching. This training focuses on how you come across, with advice on your appearance, feedback on your delivery, and mindfulness of both verbal and non-verbal communication.

Crisis/Controversy Media Training This training — which can be taken in advance of, as well as in the event of, a crisis or controversy — prepares you for situations where you may have to debate, explain, or justify a sensitive position or action.

Prepare for those tough questions and learn how to walk the fine line that is sometimes called for when discussing sensitive topics.

Customized Media Training This targeted training can prepare you for a variety of situations, including satellite interviews, editorial board visits, press conferences, panel discussions, teleprompter usage, Skype interviews, filmed interviews, and more.
