COVER STORY
WHO is, Jenna-Louise
Coleman? BY STEPHEN HENDERSON
With Karen Gillan leaving the TARDIS, the Doctor was on the look out for a new girl. But he only picks the best. And by god is she good. And quite possibly the sexiest girl ever to enter the TARDIS. We don't even know her character's name yet but I'm so excited about Jenna-Louise Coleman bursting onto our screens on Christmas Day. JLC first hit our screens in 2005 when she played the role of lesbian vicar's daughter Jasmine Thomas and by 2007 she was being nominated for her performance. At the British Soap Awards she was Nominated for "Best Newcomer", and at the National Television Awards she was nominated for "Most Popular Newcomer". Then, two years later as "Best Actress", "Sexiest Female" and "Best Dramatic Performance" at the Soap Awards and for Best Actress by TV Choice.
After leaving the Dales she had her first experience of time-travel as she found herself playing a school girl in Waterloo Road – despite being 23. In 2011, she made her big screen debut in Captain America: The First Avenger in a blink-and-you'll-miss-her role as Connie. Then, she appeared in ITV's Titanic playing Annie and often out-shone the big names in the drama. But soon she will become best known for playing the Doctor's assistant, whose name remains a mystery. “I have an idea of the story,” she told Radio Times at the time “of the character and of a few surprises, but I don’t know her name or where she’s from. I just told Steven [Moffat] and [producer] Caroline Skinner, 'Don’t tell me anything until I need to know it'".
“I'm just beyond excited and I'm so pleased that the news is out because it's a secret I've been keeping for quite a while now. JLC
And when auditioning for such a massive show absolutely everything is secret. “I wasn’t allowed to say it was Doctor Who at any point - not talking to my agent, not when I arrived at the audition, and I certainly couldn’t tell anyone at all what I was up to next.” However, she was allowed to call it by it's new codename 'Men on Waves'. “I worked out that Men on Waves is an anagram of Woman Seven, because this is the seventh series”. It also looks as if the gods of fate are shining down on her. “Weirdly, seven is my lucky number and this is my seventh job”. Doctor Who is a show like no other and this became apparent when JLC got to her audition “Normally you’re just reading in front of a camera, but with this, it was so physical. We were using props and running around so it felt like playing - and like a partnership straightaway”. “When you keep a secret this big” Jenna-Louise said – “I’ve kept this one for six weeks – the temptation to tell is all the more irresistible, especially as I live with three school friends '”With girl politics the way they are, I couldn’t tell just one friend. I had to phone one of them on the way to the press conference to tell her that I’d borrowed her shoes, in case she saw them in photos”. All this secretism had kept her name off the tabloid's list titled “Possible Companions” until the morning of the announcement where found it's way into various redtops and Twitter hours before. She's very excited about filming (which started in May) and another excitable person is the show's boss Steven Moffat.
He said that Jenna-Louise performed well in her screen test and displayed good chemistry with Matt Smith. “We saw a lot of brilliant actresses. But Jenna was the only person going faster than Matt - he had to keep up!” There will be 6 episodes of Doctor Who this year, including the Christmas Special. Then 8 will follow in 2013 with Jenna's character first seen at Christmas.

DOCTOR WHO STARS THAT WOULD MAKE A GOOD BIG BROTHER HOUSEMATE... With a new Celebrity Big Brother on the horizon we wonder just WHO would be our ideal house mate..
COLIN BAKER If there's any DW star you'd expect to see in anything it's Col. He's been in Celebrity Come Dine With Me and even helped a Dr Who hoarder sell his collection on “Get Your House in Order”. And with the new BB eye suitably multi-coloured to match that coat, if it'll be anyone it's Colin.
JON PERTWEE OK, limitations aside – the fact that he died before BB even began – you only need to look at some old interviews particularly Parkinson or a one-man radio show he did, to see how hilarious he was especially describing how he was thrown out of RADA for objecting to be a wind (left). Then, he starts breaking into various impressions and voices that have you rolling around on the floor.
JOHN BARROWMAN Outrageous, that's one word, wouldn't he just be hilarious. But the thing is: could this flamboyance just be an act and could he be just a regular guy in real-life. I don't think so, really, but there's always that possibility that he turns out to be a bit dull being stuck in the BB house for a fortnight. But even that would be better than some of the dullards you normally get on BB.
DAVID TENNANT He's such a private person that it's unlikely he'd ever go to Big Brother but it would be good. He's so down-to-earth, he'd be everyone's best friend and he's a bit of a laugh. However, he's kept very busy being an actor so he'd have no time really – and he has one thing most regular BB stars don't have – a career.
The story of... Doctor Stew Family Guy and Doctor Who are two of my favourite shows so you could imagine my delight when I came across a fan-made video that was the best of both worlds. However, in the middle of making their third episode the team, led by Kevin Karstens who also provides a good impression of Family Guy's Stewie, were sent a nasty message from FOX telling them to close down all versions of the show. It's probably ironic that Family Guy's Seth McFarlane is a massive Doctor Who fan, so this show also featuring K-BRI a mixture of K-9 and Brian, should have been something he's loved but the overlords at FOX like an elephant of a mouse were so scared of a tiny not-for-profit, fan-made project that they killed it. Thankfully, they were down but not out – through a tribute video to the original Stew, they announced that Stew would regenerate into a hybrid mix between 10 & 11 and continue with a Family Guy-ish spoof on Doctor Who, but without of any of the FOX stuff. The newest episode sees the new Stew face up to the FOXtraxi in which he declares that this fan-series is PROTECTED. However, since FOX forced the removal of all the original shows it's just such as shame that if you weren't fortunate enough to see it – you never will. ALSO ON Dalek Tales: The Daleks that Time Forgot (parts 1,2,3) Dalek Tales: The Daleks that Time Forgot is a brilliantly animated fan-made series starring the Daleks. It's unbelievable this is a fan-made production as it is so professional looking, even the voices (all provided by the animator, Lee Adams) are perfect. Concluding Part 4 is out now... Doctor Who... Doctor Who...
on stage on stage
The Curse of the Daleks
1965, Wyndam's Theatre – London Organised during the 'Dalekmania' of the sixties and without the Doctor this story is a kind of murder mystery, but in space. However, Daleks proved difficult to stage – especially when the stage was sloped.
Doctor Who - The Ultimate Adventure 1989, originally Wimbledon Theatre – London but also King's Theatre - Southsea Originally starring Jon Pertwee then Colin Baker (and two nights with David Banks) saw the Daleks team up with the Cybermen (Russell T. Davies must have seen this!) in this partly musical adventure.
Have you ever met a DW star? We're starting a 'you lucky basTARDIS' page. Please e-mail your pics to: stephendavidhenderson@yahoo.co.uk
Doctor Who and the Daleks in Seven Keys to Doomsday 1974, Adelphi Theatre – London Starring Trevor Martin as the Doctor and former TV companion Wendy Padbury as 'Jenny' and written by one of the best show writers of DW, this stage play saw the Daleks steal a crystal the Doctor has assembled.
Doctor Who at the Proms
Various, Royal Albert Halls – London The annual BBC Proms have often been invaded by the Doctor. Showcasing live performances of the Doctor Who score alongside the monsters and the occasional guest apperance from – or presented by – the Doctor and his companions both in and out of character.
Doctor Who LIVE: The Monsters are Coming 2011, UK Tour Almost a sequel to Jon Pertwee's Carnival of Monsters this seesVorgenson travels around the galaxy, spreading stories of the Doctor's exploits, while using his minimiser gadget to conjure up the Doctor's enemies. No actors from the show appeared except in pre-filmed segments and in a one-off performance in which Matt Smith turned up. A similar concept has been touring Australia.
THINGS THAT HAVE TO HAPPEN DOCTOR WHO: THE BIG 50TH ANNIVERSASRY QUIZ I know, the title needs a bit of work but this could be good. Hosted by me (wishful thinking!) but probably John Barrowman or someone like that it'd be a bit like C4's Big Fat Quiz of the Year, we have lots of teams like “The Doctors” with David Tennant, Sylvester McCoy and Matt Smith, then “The Companions”, “The Villains”, “The Celebrity Fans” and they are all trying to beat “The Superfans” such as someone from Doctor Who Magazine, the guy that won Doctor Who Mastermind and someone who's won some competition to be on this. I know, needs refining. No – hang on – we get the Anne Droid to host it!
AN UNEARTHLY CHILD IS REBROADCAST 5.15, Saturday 23th November 2013, this is BBC One – and now Doctor Who. Complete with retro BBC graphics, if they do anything they must do this.
WHY STOP THERE?
With the BBC trying to save money left, right and Television centre, instead of endlessly repeating “I've Got too much worthless junk in my house so let's get some posh git in to sell it for me” and other such crap – why not repeat something we actually want to see. We'd even accept BBC Two or late-night BBC Three or Four just somewhere.
THE RETURN OF DWC
If BBC Three are still dragging their heels as to not bringing back Confidential indefinitely, why not just for a few special episodes looking at the old series and how that was made. Get the message to the ten-year old kids out there that David Tennant was, in fact, NOT the first Doctor.
FOR DOCTOR WHO'S 50TH A MULTI-DOCTOR EPISODE Goes without saying really. But this time can it please not be, what's the word – shit? The only ones that are any good are “The Three Doctors” and “Time Crash” the rest are complicated by having too many Doctors there or too much continuity bringing down the story – or in the case of “The Two Doctors” the whole thing is just crap bar Patrick Troughton who stops the whole thing being a total disaster. So it would seem as much as I would love to see “The Eleven Doctors” or even just the surviving eight back – it probably wouldn't work logistically (Tom Baker being well past pension age, Colin Baker looking nothing like he did in the 80s or Christopher Eccleston's point blank refusal) or as a story so it will probably be best if it's a tongue-incheek, Time Crash style story with just a few Doctors.
A DOCTOR WHO-SICAL Using Chameleon Circuit's songs make a DW musical. Simples. Barrowman's a great singer so he'd be perfect in it and DT's singing voice isn't to shabby either.
BBC FOUR DOCUMENTARY Telling the story of how in 1963 Verity Lambert and co created one of the greatest shows ever. Probably with some cameos by DW stars and Jon Culshaw as Tom Baker at some point it goes to tell the story of it's development all the way through to the 50th. And it could be called something quirky like 'Genesis of a Timelord'.
JOOLS HOLLAND'S WHOTENNANY Jools presents a night counting down to the big day on late night BBC2 featuring an all-star karaoke with both DW stars and famous fans.
AND ALL THE MISSING EPISODES TO BE FOUND Unlikely to happen but would be good, we live in hope

Elisabeth Sladen One Year Without Her It's hard to believe Elisabeth Sladen left us a more than a year ago. To be honest it still hasn't properly set it that she is actually gone. The Sarah Jane Adventures is repeated almost everyday so it seems as if she had never left. I watch an old repeat and think: “It won't be long until the next series!” and then I remember. That it's over. We'll never be going back Bannerman Road. In April 2011, I woke up to hear half of a conversation from downstairs “Sarah Jane is dead”. That was me up and the television on, hoping that I'd misheard. I sat blankly for ages looking at the BBC Red Button with the words: “Dr Who Star Elisabeth Sladen dies”. Elisabeth's co-star Anjli Mohindra summed up how she felt on hearing the news, “I just felt empty”. In the year since her death, her autobiography was released – which I'm afraid to admit I haven't read yet, but I will when I feel like I'm able. It was the same when Series 5 started on CBBC. About ten minutes before the start I started to think if I could watch it without being constantly reminded of that empty feeling that she is no longer here. But when the opening titles came on, that was me hooked – Sarah Jane was still alive and I was fine. That why I think that ending of episode six is so good: “And the story goes on... forever”. While we've had the sad passing of Elisabeth, we've still got SarahJane, she lives on and somewhere is still having adventures on Bannerman Road – it's just we can see them any more. She appealed to legions of fans both young and old so when she passed away, the outpouring of grief and tributes was massive. It wasn't just her friends and family that felt like they knew her – the whole universe speaks of Sarah Jane Smith. To people who knew her she was fun, loving, friendly and warm. To everyone else she was Sarah Jane Smith – defender of Earth.
NEWS SERIES 7
Filming has been taking place in New York for what could be Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill's last episode. Locations included the banks of the Hudson and Central Park.
Filming has also been taking place in Spain for a Wild Wild West setting.
We've heard that there will be no double-parters this series but each episode is like a mini-movie.
This is the aptly named Mark Williams playing Rory William's father
HANG ON! How is William Hartnell back? It's not really, it's a character played by Harry Potter's David Bradley
The Doctor lies unconscious in the snow, when he comes around – he's faced with a familiar eye staring back at him.
Matt and Karen posing next to a Dalek, and if you've noticed it's a bit old and dusty that's cause the Doctor is about to face EVERY DALEK EVER!!
With Jenna-Louise Coleman revealing that she had auditioned for something called “Men on Waves” which turns out to be an anagram of Woman Seven. There's actually been many different codenames in Doctor Who. TORCHWOOD The most famous of these anagrams (the very first one associated with the new series) was “Torchwood”. The press were determined to get a glimpse of the new series of Doctor Who, so to disguise the tapes leaving the office, they were labelled “Torchwood” being an angaram of “Doctor Who”. Torchwood would later become it's own show. PANIC MOON Karen Gillan was given the codename of Panic Moon – which was an anagram of Companion.
N O O M P A NI C
ROY TROMELLY For 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks if the hidden character were to be credited as 'Terry Molloy', everyone would click it was Davros so they used Roy Tromelly instead until it was properly revealed in-story.
TREMAS The Keeper of Traken saw Anthony Ainley's Tremas taken over by the Master to replace his dying body – he should have seen that one coming, it's another anagram. NEIL TOYNAY/LEON NY TAIY The Master was in disguise again – this time in Castrovalva as 'Portreeve' to avoid ruining the surprise he was credited as Neil Toynay (anagram of Anthony Ainley). In 'Time-Flight' the Master was also credited as being played by Leon Ny Taiy. ROBIN BLAND/DAVID AGNEW The Invasion of Time is – well in one word – shit. Tinfoiled special effects and cardboard looking Sontarons and time wasted running through the TARDIS swimming pool and hospital – that are just whatever location was cheapest as the brick walls prove. So much so that script editor Anthony Read and producer Graham Williams credited themselves as “David Agnew”. The pseudonym Agnew also crops up in “City of Death” When Terrance Dick's Brain of Morbius was given a massive overhaul at the displeasure of Dicks by Robert Holmes, he insisted his name was taken off it and replaced by a 'bland' pseudonym so Bob Holmes came up with Robin Bland. Another few examples that have been spotted are that Kylie Minouge's character ASTRID is an anagram of TARDIS. Also, Wilfred Mott is an anagram of Timelord (give or take the letters W,T,F) but this could just be a coincidence.
YOU KNOW YOU'RE A DOCTOR WHO FAN WHEN... … you've tried fish fingers and custard. … you always take a banana to a party. … in twenty years time you'll be forcing you ten year old to watch Genesis of the Daleks
Harry Potter
AND THE MANY DOCTOR WHO REFERENCES
David Tennant
Just before he entered the TARDIS, David Tennant played the bad guy Barty Crouch Jr. in the Goblet of Fire. At the end of the movie his disguise as Mad-Eye Moody wears off and he morphs back into his true form – now nobsdy can deny that's not a bit like a regeneration. Also in that movie is a tent that is bigger on the inside. Hmm....
Michael Gambon
Michael Gambon played the Scrooge-like Kazran Sardick and his father Elliot and also played Hogwart's headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
Helen McCrory
Roger Lloyd Pack Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, and vampire queen Rosanna Calvierri in the Doctor Who episode The Vampires of Venice. Barty Crouch Snr was also a Dr Who star, Roger having played cyber controler John Lumic
John Cleese
Toby Jones The Monty Python star had a cameo as an art gallery visitor in “The City of Death” and then went on to play Nearly Headless Nick in two Potter movies.
The voice of Dobby was also the Dream Lord from “Amy's Choice”.
Other notable names include: Shirley Henderson, Bill Nighy, David Bradley (Shansheeth in SJA but coming to DW Series 7), Derek Deadman, Elizabeth Spriggs, Jeff Rawle, Jessica Hynes, Jimmy Gardner, John Atterbury, Julian Glover and Terence Bayler and Mark Williams (coming series 7).
