welcomes an even more relaxed island lifestyle for residents relishing an existence envied by many, and visitors still indulging the extravagance of tropical living in the BVI. Bars and restaurants will provide more seclusion and marine activities may be even more easily accessible – can’t really see a downside. Opening June’s issue, we review Taino in our Villa Showcase this month, inviting you to tour one of Tortola’s finest vacation rentals; a property that blends its traditional Caribbean style with an injection of Asian design influences. We are also honoured to exhibit Roseweood Hotels Little Dix Bay in this edition – a phenomenal iconic resort of luxury, rejuvenation, and tranquillity with the fortune of being located on an island— Virgin Gorda—that has such rare distinction, it truly stands as unique in the Caribbean. BVI HomeSense reminds us how diverse this archipelago is in reviewing the differences between island living choices in the Territory – this is definitely a pleasure that distinguishes the BVI from the rest of the Caribbean. This year, we welcomed back the Oyster Regatta with its fantastic fleet of cruising yachts and compelling social vibe – renowned as the ‘Oyster Family.’ They permitted us to put one of their fantastic vessels under our Yacht Spotlight – Bandido, an outstanding live-aboard experience for those fortunate enough to sail her. From Sea Level writer Megan makes soup a spectacular dish through her versatile culinary skill with Roasted San Marzano Tomatoes that we’re sure all her Lolalita guests have thoroughly enjoyed; this paired with a vibrant Pinot Noir selected by Caribbean Cellars to top it off. We interview the authority on hurricane season here in the BVI to provide sailors with as much preparation as you need. The BVI is a very fortunate location, but it’s best to be at optimum efficiency should an adverse scenario present itself. We entertain more from the BVI Maritime History Tales of our resident historian Geoffrey Brooks, who relays the fable of a ‘fateful spark’ that creates quite explosive results. Another refreshing addition to our pages is a visit to Little Switzerland, experts in jewellery and watches, excelling in knowing ‘what to wear’ and how to maintain those treasured trophy pieces. House, home accessories retailer enlighten us with some warm gift ideas for Father’s Day in Things We Love, cherishing our dad’s and bringing a smile to their faces. Following, we are still in reverence of time’s almighty speed as VIPY RC Nominations are up – log on at bvipropertyyacht.com and let us know who should be counted for the July-August vote as the best in their individual categories. Closing, we present a unique aspect of the British Virgin Island’s geographical location – some very attractive sunsets in our Virgin Islands Life segment. This spread demonstrates why you need to be here.

Wishing you enjoyment of the LAND, SEA, and LIFE of the Virgin Islands.

When driving up the private road approaching the property, the fuchsia bougainvillea flowers distinctively paint the gated entrance to Taino along its driveway. The house is secluded behind meticulously landscaped gardens, with Christmas palms, zora, and award-winning hibiscus flowers, accompanied by papaya, mango, and lime trees. The island-inspired home sits behind a spacious deck area, with a 40” x 11” infinity pool, overlooking the astonishing views of the neighbouring islands. The open architectural layout which was designed by the owners from inspiration gained upon their international travels, enables a cool breeze to travel gently throughout the house and covered, open-aired living area. An eclectic mix of furniture—including wicker sofas and hanging basket chairs— provide a comfortable space to relax. Inside the building’s concrete exterior, colourful walls embrace the sun as it filters into the indoor dining area, separated by an archway window opening to a fully equipped kitchen with modern appliances. Al-fresco dining on the porch provides views of Tortola’s West End from Carrot Bay to Cane Garden Bay, and is best enjoyed with delicious barbecued cuisine, prepared on the Weber gas grill. Within the house is a cosy library with a unique collection of books, artefacts, and games, and a flat screen TV equipped with a full selection of cable channels. Accommodating up to six guests, Taino has three bedrooms, each with a spacious en suite bathroom. The two guest suites within the main house contain queen beds, and a master suite is located in a quaint detached pavilion across the outside patio, with a large, four-poster king size bed.

LAND Words by Stephen L France Photography courtesy of Rosewood Hotels Little Dix Bay

A good resort receives repeat business by accomplishing three features brilliantly with the sole purpose of creating escapism – a task synonymous with promoting the relaxation of mind and body. In achieving the three key allures intrinsic to resort advertisement, success will be relished; however, a memorable retreat is obliged to exceed the standards set by a successful tropical haven and deliver enigmatic wonder, creating loyal patronage repeatedly returning for years. Of course in advocating the three features where a resort must meet perfection, we are discussing accommodations, cuisine, and ‘vacation indulgences,’ (often referred to as wellness activities). So why has Virgin Gorda’s Rosewood Little Dix Bay emerged as the iconic epitome of the BVI, coveted by vacationers seeking Caribbean paradise? It begins with the Rockefeller vision – a concept that parallels the tranquillity that all people desire…

Accommodations and Rosewood Little Dix Bay’s loyal patronage Laurance Rockefeller—the famous American philanthropist—was the founder and visionary of the picturesque dream location witnessed on Virgin Gorda. His concept of the idyllic destination constituted flawless accommodation, great fare, and added luxuries – like fishing, sailing, or snorkelling. Consequently, the resort has flourished with monumental moments like Her Majesty, The Queen’s visit. With a rich history, January 18, 2014 marked the 50-year milestone of operation for the property, instilling a tradition among many families who have been venturing there since the resort opened. The luxury of being situated on the 8.5 square mile island of Virgin Gorda—retaining its original geographic and cultural authenticity—affords the resort seclusion, that’s disappeared with other commercialised Caribbean destinations overrun with development. The stunning natural setting is an intricate part of the accommodation, evidenced in its positon on the prestigious 2014 ‘World’s Best Caribbean Island’ Travel and Leisure list. Natural beauty of the resort is maintained and the accommodations are cleverly camouflaged within the lush landscape of the resort. Despite having 100 rooms, suites, beach houses and villas, almost all accommodations are concealed from the beach and bay.

s the country’s second largest employer, over 325 staff work to exceed guest expectations, with some associates holding tenure for almost as long as the resort has been open. Resort associates have developed a culture of personalised service for the guest that has consistently returned for 25 years or more, as well as the guest visiting the resort for the first time. With this level of professional diversity, the resort also welcomes BVI residents with special rates available during the summer and summer shoulder season.

Culinary expertise and diversity Talking to Food and Beverage Director, Fabio Petrone, he explained the efforts behind the culinary expertise at the resort: “We work with Virgin Gorda vendors and farmers from nearby Caribbean islands to source things like tomatoes, cucumbers, [and] Virgin Gorda pumpkin,” he said. “We also source things like coconuts, mangoes, and lemongrass from resort grounds.” www.bvipropertyyacht.com

One of the most enticing facts about the BVI, is the differences found in the islands. When choosing to purchase a home in the Territory, take time to explore and find the island that suits you best. Each island has its own unique character, vibe, size, and landscape and there is the possibility of falling in love with an island you might have never thought of. Below, we highlight the uniqueness of six of the main islands that are a part of ‘Nature’s Little Secrets’ here in the BVI. Go out, explore, and live the life you imagined – it might be just a ferry-ride away...

3. Scrub Island World Class Marina Luxurious living alongside a global class resort and marina, which has provided sanctuary to world travellers since Christopher Columbus first visited – Scrub Island offers superb amenities along with the flexibility to create your own oasis. Although it is a relatively small island, all the amenities are readily available such as restaurants, bars, gourmet market, beaches, health club, and various water sport activities. In addition, its central location affords proximity to the airport, but that’s unlikely to be important when in paradise.

4. Jost van Dyke Timeless Island Life Timeless Caribbean island life with your toes constantly touching the sand; enjoy your cocktail at one of the many world famous beach bars on the west side. White Bay Beach, which is one of the BVI’s premier vacation destinations, was made famous by Kenny Chesney in his song, No shirt, No shoes, No problem. The hillsides provide magnificent views of nearby islands, including St. John and St. Thomas in the USVI. Choose to live on the eastern side for the spectacular views, and more importantly, proximity to Little Jost Van Dyke, Diamond Cay, and the picturesque islands Green Cay, Sandy Spit, and Sandy Cay.

4. 1.

5. Great Camanoe Robinson Crusoe Existence A daily ride in a small runabout is part of the joy of living on this unique island, helping to fulfil the pleasures of this glorified Robinson Crusoe existence. With almost no amenities and back to basics mentality, you will truly unplug from daily life. What sets this island gem apart are the incredible views, often allowing you to see from Anegada to St. Croix. The other captivating differentiators are the ‘big skies’ at night, and during the daytime, the protected and cosy feeling you get from looking down at the reef of Marina Cay.

6. Anegada – An Unspoiled World Apart 2.

A world apart, with bright sandy beaches, miles of unspoiled reefs all around the coral island and—unlike the other islands—almost flat; not many choose to live this secluded life, but those who can and do, remain as close to nature and its glorious beauty as one possibly can. Plus, there is the opportunity to indulge daily in eating, reputedly, the Caribbean’s best lobster. Whichever island you choose to live on, the greatest pleasure of the BVI and its fantastic archipelago, is the fact that you are so close to the other isles – you can always dip in and out of each location at will.

The British Virgin Islands is a renowned sailor’s

paradise for its prime, predictable sailing conditions, which is why the country is the frequent host of many competitive regattas each year. Oyster Regatta returned to the BVI for its 6th time to host their 35th annual spring Caribbean event. However, unlike the majority of sailing races which place a strong emphasis on the competitive aspect of the sport, these exclusive regattas focus on the social bonding experiences shared between owners of luxurious Oyster yachts. The Oyster Regatta takes place twice a year, situated in a Caribbean location in the spring, and in the Mediterranean in autumn. They are designed to be social experiences, exclusive to members of the ‘Oyster Family,’ to showcase their prized possessions, and meet and build strong relationships based around their mutual interest: the ownership of a beautiful Oyster. Oyster Marine was established in 1973, quickly becoming an international market leader of world-class cruising yachts, and has since built more than a thousand vessels. The boats are recognised for their unique, modern design with elements customised to maximise the comfort and preferences of those who sail them. The yachts are more than material possessions and emphasise the importance of luxurious comfort over competitive performance, as it is the affluent yachting lifestyle around owning an Oyster, which defines the company. David Tydeman has been the CEO of Oyster for six years and is a naval architect by trade. He joined the company with an extensive background on the technical knowledge of yacht building and an uncompromising passion for sailing. During his time with

28

VI PROPERTY & YACHT

Published by aLookingGlass Ltd.

Oyster, he has tweaked the classic design to improve areas of functionality and comfort based on his pre-existing expertise of the industry. “A lot of thinking goes around the social uses of the boat when we begin designing an Oyster,” said David. “The design is not created with high-tech sails or racing specifics, but rather, unique features to maximise modern essentials and comfort.” The Oyster’s naval architecture is created to withstand harsh weather conditions while cruising along the oceans of the world. “In many ways we are like a Bentley SUV…classy, quality, but tough,” David commented. The introduction of their signature ‘tear drop window,’ wrapping around the saloon space allows travellers to experience the extraordinary views when relaxing inside the boat. Oysters are built with the owners in mind and how they will co-inhabit with their crew, and as such are designed in a way to allow privacy and separation if they prefer. To adhere to this ethos of comfort, and recognising that Oyster owners enjoy passage making voyages, the boats feature the master cabin at the back rather than the front. Oyster owners enjoy coming to the BVI because it offers the chance for the race to take place in multiple locations on different islands, rather than beginning and concluding at the same base each day. Because Oyster places a strong emphasis on the social experience of the regatta, exclusive events took place each evening, including a prize giving, dinner, and party on each of the three visited islands. Day one began at Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola, where the owners registered, enjoying a cocktail party and buffet dinner at Peg Leg’s restaurant. On the first race day, the fleet travelled to Norman Island, where participants dressed up for a pirate-themed party at the Pirates Bight Restaurant. The final three days of the regatta took place around Virgin Gorda, where the Oyster Family raced for two days and spent one ‘lay day’ relaxing at luxury accommodations in the North Sound, including Bitter End Yacht Club, Oil Nut Bay, and the prestigious, state-of-the-art superyacht marina, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS).

“What I love about our regattas in the BVI is that we get to sail from place to place in some of the best, predictable sailing conditions in the world,” David added. Recently, Oyster launched the start of a new venture for their customers by implementing the World Rally, with its inauguration in 2013. During this rally, 100 people came together on 25 boats for a 15 month global expedition, congregating at organised locations to partake in social bonding events. Oyster’s next World Rally is set to take place beginning in 2017 and ending in 2019. In addition to luxury yacht builders, the company also sells secondhand yachts through Oyster Brokerage, a dedicated team of experts with an extensive database of technical documents and photographs to match prospective owners to their perfect, previously owned Oyster. Cruising on a luxury sailing vessel is alternatively offered for vacationers through Oyster Charters, who provide an experienced crew to operate or assist with the sailing and hospitality services provided on charter holidays.

“Sailors who are new to yachting trust Oyster because they feel safe in the customised, durable vessels when cruising the transatlantic,” David explained. The overall winners of the event were Reina in class 1, an 825 Oyster owned by Jeroen Hemels, and Infiniti of Cowes in class 2, a 72 Oyster owned by Ken and Diana Randall. The next Oyster Regatta will take place this autumn in the Mediterranean in Palma between September 29 and October 3, 2015. Between the official regattas, the owners will enjoy many other exciting opportunities such as parties, dinners, and boat shows to meet and connect with the Oyster Family. www.bvipropertyyacht.com

Built to withstand unpredictable

transatlantic journeys whilst

upholding an ethos as the utmost comfortable sailing experience, the luxurious yachts known as Oysters are developed by Oyster Yachts- an internationally recognised brand which caters to their loyal customer base known as the ‘Oyster Family.’ Available for purchase by a new or existing member of the Oyster Family, the stunning Bandido was custom launched in 2011 to provide an outstanding live-aboard experience for those who sail her. Bandido is a 63ft, triple award-winning, Oyster 625 – the signature creation of the world-renowned yacht designer, Ron Humphreys who works with the Oyster Design Team in coordination with owners to develop beautiful semicustom vessels. One of the advantages from the onset of her design was that Bandido is designed to be an owner-driven boat, as she is currently owned and operated solely by an experienced sailing couple. Alternatively, the vessel is large enough to host a crew on board, as she was created to accommodate up to eight guests in four cabins.

A modern addition to the Oyster yacht models 575 and up, Bandido features triple vertical seascape windows, which create both a unique exterior feature—signature to the Oyster brand—and allow prime visibility when viewing the ocean from inside the vessel. On board, the yacht’s huge flush aft deck with teak laid floors is above adequate space to move around comfortably, as the sailing equipment has been positioned to allow the freedom of movement for guests. Her outdoor entertaining area is separate from the cockpit, providing a private area for relaxation where those who choose to can bask in the surrounding ocean’s tranquillity. Here, alfresco dining can be enjoyed on a gloss-varnished folding table under the shade of a protective bimini.

Roasted SanMarzano Tomato Soup

Competing for my love of food is my love of words. There are some words out there, much like foods, that tend to be innately loved, and others that require time and experience to appreciate. The phrase, ‘variety is the spice of life,’ describes a taste of the big, beautiful world we live in that allows for us to learn and adapt our individual preferences in every potential aspect of life. For me, one of those foods – the kind I definitely did not appreciate – was the humble tomato. I grew up well into my twenties thinking they were bitter and odd in texture. Then, I met Captain Ernie, who (as I’m sure you know) is my husband. Ernie has a deep love for tomatoes, and opened my eyes to the great, big, multi-coloured world of the many delicious varieties. Provisioning is my favourite part of the week – the possibilities are endless. One of my favourite finds is a variety of tomatoes – Campari, Kumato, Cherry, Grape… yellow, brown, purple, red…and then there are

San Marzanos. Oblong in shape, they are firm, juicy, sweet, and aromatic. These are my preferred tomatoes to use to make my homemade tomato soup. Back to my love of words. One evening, I had decided to make my Roasted San Marzano Tomato Soup for a charter of four couples, all celebrating their 70th birthdays. The soup was served as our first course and as I was plating the entrée, our stewardess came in and said the guests wanted to speak with me. A particularly boisterous, theatrical gentleman said very calmly, “That soup was ambrosia.” Here’s where it all comes together: on one of my refrigerators I have a collection of random words that I’ve learned and fell in love with. One of them is ‘ambrosia’ – in ancient Greek mythology, this word is defined as the food or drink of the Greek Gods. There couldn’t be a better compliment.

Enjoy...

Ingredients

In a large saucepan, heat beef broth. Transfer roasted tomatoes to broth and let cook at simmer for 20 minutes. Deglaze the baking sheet with a splash of water to keep all the good flavours. Add in a handful of fresh basil and puree soup with immersion blender. Salt and pepper to taste. Ladle hot (or chilled) soup into your bowl of choice, garnishing with fresh basil and fresh-cracked black pepper. I highly recommend serving alongside a fresh-baked loaf of ciabatta bread.

Caribbean Cellars Wine Pairing To go with this rich and delicious soup we’ve picked a vibrant and generous Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast in California. La Crema have been crafting fabulous Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in this area since the end of the seventies and their latest vintage is no exception. Elizabeth Grant-Douglas, the Winemaker selected Pinot Noir grapes from vineyards all lying within 30 miles of the cooling influence of the Pacific ocean, carefully making them into wine which matures for just over 6 months in French oak barrels before bottling. She describes her wine as “a well-balanced Sonoma Coast blend. Fine tannins and good concentration create a broad, supple mouthfeel that lingers well.” We like to put the bottle on ice or in the fridge for 10 minutes before opening and we’re sure you will be back for a second glass. $21.50 per bottle.

SEA Interview by Lauren Charley. Photo by Don Hebert and provided by DDM

urricane season in the BVI runs from June 1 to November 30, hitting its peak between August and early October. Whether you choose to be on island during hurricane season or not, there is a lot you need to know in order to adequately prepare in case a storm hits. Knowing the proper storage procedures for your yacht is crucial in order to prevent or minimise damage to the vessel during the harsh weather conditions, which generally include high winds, sea swells, and heavy rainfall. Thankfully, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has shared their extensive knowledge and experience with VIPY in disaster preparedness, specifically to the yachting industry:

What does the 2015 hurricane season predict for the BVI? The revised predictions for the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season which were issued in April indicate that this year will be “one of the least active seasons since the middle of the 21st century. The forecasters are predicting three hurricanes and seven named storms. One of the three forecasted hurricanes is expected to be major. The number of hurricane alerts issued by the DDM will be determined by the number of systems that pose a threat to the Territory and the duration of that threat.

38

Published by aLookingGlass Ltd.

Which are the best marine shelters and where are they located in the BVI? Over the years, a detailed assessment of the vulnerability of marine shelters was undertaken and based on this assessment, a recommended listing has been documented and made available for public use. Many of these lie in sheltered harbours and in areas protected by reefs and mangroves. The list of land-based and marine shelters are available on the DDM website - www.bviddm.com

What options do boat owners have in order to prepare their boat for hurricane season? Boat owners have to have a plan in place from the beginning of each new year. Insurance policies require that owners have a hurricane plan in place and submit official documentation stating where their boat will be during the hurricane season. There are three main options for those who choose to not remain with their boat in the BVI:

• Vacate the area with the vessel prior to the start of the season • Have the yacht hauled out of the waters and stored • Obtain a ‘hurricane slip’ from a marina, so when there is a hurricane, the staff will go into the slip and prepare the boat Information provided by Sam Welch, Chairman, Marine Association of the BVI

What are the correct procedures for securing a vessel within a marina? • Secure the engines • Take down the sails and tie them up, or remove them altogether • Take all deck gear including life boards, life rings, and patch boards

down below • Make sure there is nothing left on board which could blow away • Secure the boat by at least 4 lines • Shut off the batteries - make sure these are checked every two weeks if the boat is not in use Information provided by Sam Welch, Chairman, Marine Association of the BVI How can we stay informed with updates regarding the hurricane season? Throughout the season, the DDM will partner with all local media and utilise its own website and social media platforms, to issue public service announcements and other types of information that provide guidance for residents as they make their preparations for the hurricane season.

For more information on Hurricane Preparedness, please visit the DDM’s website at www.bviddm.com or visit their offices at #3 Wailing Road, MacNamara, Tortola, BVI. The DDM also actively updates their information on their social media pages:

This is the story of a locally built schooner and her abrupt, dramatic end. The Catherine was a beautiful trading schooner built of wood in Road Town by expert shipwright Leopold Smith. Leopold was the son of the prolific West End boat builder Daniel Smith and father to Ira Smith founder of today’s Smith’s Ferry Services. The Catherine was launched on April 12, 1949 from the ghut in McNamara where the Lion’s Club Park is now located. She was 63ft in length and an outstanding example of the talents and expertise of her builder. Leopold built her for his own use and owned her with two other partners. She was active in local trading for five years and then sold to Robinson O’Neal of Virgin Gorda. Robinson O’Neal added an engine and renamed her Maris. As the Maris, she continued to ply the waters of the Virgin Islands making regular trips from Virgin Gorda to St. Thomas, San Juan, Puerto Rico and back. It was on one of these trips to Puerto Rico, that she met an untimely end five years later. It had been a routine passage from Virgin Gorda to San Juan and the Maris docked at pier 5. She reached in the evening and after a quiet night, spent the whole of the next day unloading and loading cargo. The crew consisted of the Captain Winston O’Neal, brother to owner Robinson, a first mate, engineer, and five crew. There were also two other passengers—a man from Anegada and another from St. Thomas—bringing the total to 10 people. After unloading the various items brought from Virgin Gorda, the crew began loading the supplies for the trip back. The majority of the return cargo consisted of over 150 large propane tanks full of gas. As the crewmen struggled to place this heavy burden aboard, the engineer worked with a local mechanic who was making some repairs to the diesel engine. Captain Winston O’Neal was at the far end of the dock conferring with his brother, owner Robinson, who had piloted a small plane from his headquarters in St. Thomas to San Juan to meet the boat, as was his habit. The two passengers had been shopping and were bringing their personal items aboard. Now the crew consisted of five young men from Virgin Gorda. They were all around 19 years old and were under the supervision of the first mate, who was older—well into his 20’s—and a native of Anguilla. As the last of the gas bottles were being placed on board, the young crew members expressed their concern with how they were being stored. It seems that many of them were stacked in a horizontal position, instead of upright and some actually had the top with the regulator leaning down.

When they complained to the First Mate, saying that they thought they could smell gas, the bottles were put down and the crew were reminded that they had stacked bottles this way many times before: “What’s wrong with you all? Are you afraid of death?” was the remark made. With that said, the matter was closed and everyone continued to prepare the vessel to leave port. It was 3pm on Friday January 9, 1959. The local mechanic had left and the ships engineer was below, ready to start the engine. The crew and passengers were situated in various places on deck and one was on the dock to throw off the mooring lines. ‘Robbie’ O’Neal and his brother Captain Winston were finishing up business at the far end of the pier. When the local mechanic began working on the engine earlier in the day he had disconnected the battery cables. These were reconnected when he finished, but in his haste to leave, he had not tightened them properly. As the Engineer turned on the ignition key, the loose battery cable was made to arc which created a spark and an incredible explosion which lifted the deck in one piece into the air while forcing the hull underwater. Windows were broken across the bay in office buildings in San Juan and Carolina and the sound of the explosion was heard as far as 35 miles away. Incredibly, there was only one fatality. It was that of the First Mate who had admonished the younger men for being afraid. Every other crew member sustained injury for which they bear the scars today except two, the Captain and the crewman who were on the dock. The engineer was burned badly and marked for life. The others were mostly blown into the air and either landed on the dock or in the water. They received broken feet, legs, and arms and many still limp from the injury. For most of the injured, it meant almost a year in the hospital recovering and in some cases longer. They began their recovery in San Juan and then transferred to St. Thomas before returning to their homes in Virgin Gorda. For some, it took years before they returned to a life working at sea. For one, he never returned and stayed employed on land and to this day will not allow propane to be used in his home. The strangest thing is the fate of the engineer, for as the others were left with physical evidence of their ordeal, he was thrown straight up into the air and landed back down exactly where he had been sitting with no evidence of a broken bone or injury outside of the fact that he was dead. I will leave it to you to draw your own conclusion as I have related this story as told to me by the survivors – for me, it only reinforces the adage that truth is stranger than fiction. www.bvipropertyyacht.com

It would be a surprise for any adult or adolescent, male or female, to not know the name of our jewellery and watch guru. It’s a title paralleling opulence, that’s gilded our subconscious as the prime location to acquire peak quality in those purchases that must be aesthetically superior. The name I refer to is none other than words used as a romantic term to describe ‘dramatic natural scenic’ features: Little Switzerland – a fitting title for a store that dazzles, mesmerises, and is the highlight of traditional Caribbean vacation shopping.

Why Little Switzerland are the Caribbean leaders in fine jewellery and watches Little Switzerland was founded over 60 years ago on the island of St. Thomas, USVI. Specialising in luxury branded goods, the stores have become a household name for quality, selection, and service in the jewellery and watch industry.

How to keep your sterling silver sparkling Madalyn kindly revealed these industry secrets for keeping your jewellery looking its best: • Always wipe your silver jewellery with a soft cloth after wearing it – this removes perspiration and any other elements that can affect the lustre of your jewellery • It is recommended to clean the piece once every few weeks, depending on how often it is worn • The ‘at-home’ remedy for cleaning: Pour a few drops of Dawn Dish Soap (our personal favourite) in a bowl filled with warm water. Get a nice sudsy bath going by stirring the water with an unused toothbrush. Gently scrub the jewellery with the toothbrush, being sure to get inside all the nooks and crannies. Rinse clean with water and gently pat dry with a cotton cloth • Be sure to store all your sterling silver pieces in the specialised pouches that you purchase them in. This will keep the metal from rubbing up against other metals in your jewellery box • Always put your jewellery on last, even after perfume. The nature of natural metals and gemstones can sometimes be affected by the chemicals in lotions and perfumes.

Nomination Time! Let the nominations commence! But first, if you’re not familiar with our event or even if you are, please peruse the information surrounding the background of this fun occasion as well as the procedure for the months leading to the results.

About The Virgin Islands Property & Yacht Readers’ Choice Awards 2015 In 2011, VIPY created the RC awards’ vote and event to commemorate individuals and organisations for their distinctive contribution to the British Virgin Islands community. This is conducted via categories relevant to people, places, and services situated within the BVI. The voting is concluded with an award ceremony congratulating winners with the highest reader appreciation and the finale is held in October of every year. The event participation has expanded considerably since the event’s inception and the competition has intensified. For 2015, we have condensed the quantity of categories merging certain sections together for a broader number of businesses to become involved.

The VIPY RC 2015 Procedure This month is dedicated to nominations which can be placed at bvipropertyyacht.com – this will close June 30. July and August will allow the opportunity for voting, which will also be conducted online. We must specify that nominations ARE NOT VOTES. All nominations will be accepted as long as they are real and relevant to the category – please attempt to spell the name of the BVI establishment, service, or person correctly.

There is something so tranquil about viewing a beautiful sunset. Vibrant colours of orange, red, yellow, purple, and pink blend together to create awe-inspiring patterns, which naturally magnetise us to witness this idyllic encounter. Because of our location in the Caribbean, here in the BVI, we are fortunate enough to experience sunsets which are more colourful, bright, and beautiful than seen in other parts of the world. The lack of unnatural structures permit unobstructed views of the horizon, providing the best sights at dusk. The reflection of sunlight on the ocean creates the diversity of colours visible on the electromagnetic spectrum, with the most gorgeous sunsets occurring when there are very light clouds.
