Most days in the Virgin Islands are sunny with glorious blue skies; however, from June to November, and peaking in mid-September, there is an increased possibility of tropical storms and hurricanes. Preparation is key and although you should have started already, here are our five important points for making certain you are organised for hurricane season.

1) Building Security

• Your water pump will be affected by a power failure. Check that you

SEA It all started in November when Captain Theodolph Faulkner from Anegada brought his wife to the cottage hospital in Road Town. She was having difficulty with her pregnancy and there was no medical help in Anegada. While she was in the hospital, Theodolph stayed in town to be near her and in the evenings, he would sit out in Main Street near the old post office and complain about the lack of services provided for the people of Anegada. Each night, more and more people would gather and soon complaints were aired about government services throughout the Virgin Islands. The Joan of Arc being newly built and capable of carrying large numbers of people, was recruited to provide transport. She spent the whole day picking people up and bringing them to town. She went to East End, West End, Virgin Gorda, and even Anegada. As word spread, increased numbers of people began assembling at the bandstand at the bottom of Joes Hill. By 5pm, over 1,500 people began the march led by Faulkner, Fonseca, and DeCastro. They marched down Main Street, past Fleming Street, and ended at the then Governor’s office;

If you’ve endured the itchy results of a mosquito bite, you know how uncomfortable and annoying it can be. But imagine terribly aching joints, skin rashes, muscle pain, or headaches, all accompanied by a fever. These uncomfortable symptoms may indicate contraction of a mosquito-borne disease like Zika, Dengue, or Chikungunya. These diseases are much more than annoying - they can be life-threatening. With the world watching Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as they prepare for the Summer Olympics and the very real threat of the Zika virus spreading throughout South America and the Caribbean, a non-profit organisation in the BVI is taking serious action. BugOut is a community-driven initiative led by a coalition of community leaders, residents, business owners, and government representatives to control the islands’ mosquito population and reduce the risk of mosquitoborne diseases like Zika, Dengue, and Chikungunya. The programme is focused on eradication of the Aedes Aegypti breed of mosquito as it is the known carrier of these diseases. Based in Virgin Gorda with initiative efforts reaching Moskito Island, Necker Island and Eustatia Island, BugOut works to educate the public and encourage them to become involved with a ‘you’re only as good as your neighbour’ mentality. “We’re starting with the belief that the more people involved, the more information shared, and the more ownership everyone has in the results of the programme, the better,” said Sarina Hancock, BugOut Project Coordinator.

The multi-faceted programme begins with community education and empowerment. With efforts including door-to-door canvassing, public advertising, social media campaigns, and introducing the initiative to schools, BugOut shows the entire community how every effort is important in the fight against mosquitoes. A sophisticated monitoring programme allows the BugOut team to produce data on current mosquito populations and to include citizens and landowners in creating a crowd-powered, comprehensive, and ongoing picture of mosquito presence in the BVI. This data is then used as a benchmark to ensure initiative efforts are effective and to make necessary modifications if needed. The privately-funded BugOut initiative has the flexibility to adjust initiative efforts more swiftly and with greater effect, offering the community a truly responsive organisation with community betterment as the focus. “Everyone plays an important role in our monitoring network. With just a few taps of a smartphone, individuals can alert BugOut teams to problem areas, hotspots, and breeding sites, which in turn strengthens our understanding of the conditions throughout the island,” said Grey Frandsen, BugOut project co-chair. Guided by the island-wide monitoring programme, BugOut’s mosquito control methods begin with the most important component to combating the Dengue and Zika spreading mosquito species by eliminating mosquito breeding sites around every home, business, school, park, and harbour. Now we’re certainly not telling you to ‘get lost’as the phrase ‘take a hike’ is commonly known. Quite the opposite in fact. If you haven’t heard, Trails & Tales is a guide book to make certain you don’t get lost on the BVI’s most beautiful hikes, and absorb as much of the island’s natural environment as possible. Author Ron Beard came to the Territory in 2011 on a two-year contract as Deputy and then Acting Chief Planner in the Premier’s Office. After several DIY hikes, he realised that there was no guidance literature on the island for this hobby. Trail Directions From the Ridge Road driving E to W some 0.5m beyond the Elevator junction, there is a four way cross roads from which the SMNP access and Mountain View Restaurant are signposted straight ahead up the hill. The walk starts from a point some 500yds uphill beyond this junction, where you should look out for a small access on the left where two dirt tracks join the road from different directions. At this point, there is just room for a single vehicle to park; NB. respect local residents and track users, park courteously or seek a spot elsewhere if necessary. This is the start of the walk (Waypoint A on the Map).

Approach From here look S and seaward and start the walk along the level dirt track to your right, being wary of any donkeys that may be tethered! Follow the track as it tends left below an eerily thick forest canopy and past several ghut beds which, during the season, channel great volumes of runoff from the steep slopes above, down the mountainside below. The track affords access to several

Some 300yds from the start, veer left at a Y junction and follow the now deteriorated dirt track, between its verdant walls. Pass a small wooden hut moldering back into the forest which is now encroaching on all sides. A further 300yds ahead on a better section of steeper track, the canopy above begins to open out. Eventually at the corner ahead B you’ll be rewarded with a magnificent panorama SE towards Sea Cow’s Bay and Nanny Cay immediately below and across Drake’s Channel . Continue along and up the track keeping left at a junction, where another track leads up to the right, one supposes towards a future building plot. The walking is an easy plod along the increasingly overgrown track for a further 250yds past what is becoming rather dryer forest. Follow the track and as it tends right you may encounter a branch and wire pullgate strung across it, placed to keep cattle from wandering too far C . Untie the main branch from its keeper, pass through carefully and re-tie it securely. Just beyond

the fence look out for the impressive silvery-white nine-fingered leaves of the distinctive trumpet tree above (cecropia) now scattered on the forest floor below. It’s 350yds up the track to a junction where a small path continues straight ahead and into the dense forest. However, your route follows the vehicular track that turns sharply right and up a very steep section that has been heavily eroded by rains D . After another 350yds it levels off and slims down into a narrow path between the forest edges, now enclosed on both sides by barbed wire. Look out on the left for teasing views over the cow pastures below sweeping down towards Havers and Pockwood Pond E . Continue along the main path for a further 250yds and you’ll end up in the bed of a small ghut, barred by another branch and wire pull-gate. However, rather than having to untie it (and another one beyond), swivel right to face a low wire fence and carefully step over it amongst moist scrub forest F . Walk along the forest edge for 50yds and then step left, back over the remains of the low fence and look for a now obvious and well-worn trail where you tend right. Congratulations, you are now inside SMNP.
