Once you have decided to live in the BVI, there is always the option to buy a piece of land and build your dream home in the Caribbean. Although there are many magnificent properties available for purchase, the immediate benefit of buying a plot of land is you’re in control of constructing a full custom build. It takes time, planning, and project management, but the BVI has a vast array of talented architects, surveyors, construction companies, interior designers, and project managers that can assist you throughout the process. The benefits include:

1 Location:

You can be exactly where you want to be based: on

the waterfront, up high in the mountains with ocean views, near the beach, or situated where it’s an easy commute to town. If you’re seeking residency, building as a second home, or constructing as a property to let, you can select which location will best suit your needs.

2 Floor Plan & Layout: The property should reflect how you want to live and how you will use the space. From the number of bedrooms and their proximity to each other to the use of balconies and outdoor space, you have control over the design. Whether you’re sharing your home with children, young adults, elderly parents, visiting friends and family, and/or beloved pets, you can create a space where they can all relax and flourish. You can also tailor the layout to suit your hobbies and lifestyle; be it cooking, studying, storage for dive gear, paddle boards, kayaks etc.

3 Décor and Fixtures & Fittings: The BVI has an eclectic mix of architecture which has taken inspiration from a multitude of countries and cultures. You may add to this with your own selection of colours, design, and style interpretations, choosing the materials you want and sourcing them directly to create the appearance you seek. You can install the fixtures, fittings, and appliances you wish, assuming full advantage of the latest innovations and eco-capability.

4 Landscaping: With so much time spent outdoors when living in the Caribbean, the exterior landscaping and ground design is just as significant as the interior finishes. You can plant to suit your preferences and choose from palms and cactuses to flowering plants, herbs, and fruit trees – your very own food production! Creating your ideal home in the BVI really is a dream-like possibility. It does take effort and should be a sound investment, but the real return is being able to share a unique property with your family and friends, which is the essence of the Caribbean fantasy. bvipropertyyacht.com

“...the sound of the surf provides a peaceful soundtrack to daily life at Surfsong.

Entering the main reception area is like walking into a treasured friend’s home. Cosy furniture offers a gathering space for friends and family, and the honour bar makes creating your own cocktails and refreshments simple and easy. Take what you like and simply write down your choices to be billed later to your villa. A two-story beach lounge provides space for indulging in an afternoon spent with a book in a gently swinging hammock, a friendly game of cards with your fellow travellers, or a cocktail party to celebrate any of life’s great moments. As low tide washes over the rocks and coral just beyond the resort, elegant white herons land gracefully as if on cue, skates and stingrays glide through the shallows, and the sound of the surf provides a peaceful soundtrack to daily life at Surfsong. Just steps away from the beach lounge, plenty of soft white sand gives guests room to relax before an expanse of calm, cool water lapping the shore of Well Bay. Paddleboards, kayaks, and a Hobie Cat are available to guests at any time during their stay and present endless hours of fun on the water. Explore the sea grape path along the shore and you’ll discover a number of picturesque places to stop and create a memory. A charming waterfront pavilion presents an amazing place to enjoy a cool breeze, take in a good book, or even steal a secret nap. Wine and cheese on the settee is a lovely end to the day, and this private and romantic spot will quickly become your favourite view in the BVI. Island, and several shoals near Anegada.

In the news was the case of the unfortunate crew of the fast, inflatable Inevitable, which crashed into rocks at Cow Mouth near Mountain Point, Virgin Gorda, en route to Oil Nut Bay from Spanish Town. The boat was going very fast in the dead of night and apparently there was no GPS or chart being used. But another factor is that there appears to be no navigational aid on the end of Mountain Point, but only a light (not marked on charts) some 150-ft inland from the end of the peninsular. This anomaly was the tactic used by wreckers in days gone by to lure vessels to run aground and it is hoped that a proper navigational aid will now be placed at the end of the point. A similar accident happened off the bluff of Beef Island and shortly thereafter, a cardinal marker was placed there.

Bare boats are not permitted to sail at night but even so there should be adequate markers for underwater hazards. Unfamiliar to visitors from the Americas are cardinal markers and there are several in the BVI. They mark safe areas of navigation according to the cardinal points of the compass; north, south, east and west. And every prudent skipper should know the meanings of channel markers, danger, and information buoys as well as how to read and identify lights at night. If you don’t understand all the characters on the chart, get a copy of Chart#1. It’s an index of all the symbols you’ll find on nautical charts.

Safe sailing.

It was 1946 and WWII had just ended. Before we can begin however, I must backtrack a little to explain how things were done in those days. East End shipwright Claremon Floyd Davies and his two sons Haldane and Osmond were one of the two major boat building families of the day. The other was Daniel Smith and his sons from West End. Claremon was known to travel to other parts of the Virgin Islands to lead, assist, and teach other people the skills of traditional wooden boat construction. In the 1920s, he along with his sons travelled to Anegada and supervised James Smith in the construction of a 28-foot

faced a daunting challenge. Although he could produce the frames he needed from local trees and his own hard labour, he would have to purchase the lumber for planking and decking, and the steel and metal fasteners for the rigging with hard cash money. This was something that was scarce in those days and especially for a young man of his age. Being single-minded and determined to succeed, first he travelled to Puerto Rico with his uncle and while they were tied up to the dock,

sloop called the Carmen.

he visited a lumber yard which was close by. It was lunch time and everyone was on break except the manager, who he engaged in conversation. He explained what he was trying to do and that he had a very limited amount of money; he wondered if there was any lumber that had been deemed unsuitable for sale and culled that he might purchase for a discount. Seeing his zeal, the manager led him to a pile of the most curved and warped lumber you could ever imagine. He kindly told Watson he was welcome to whatever he wanted at no charge and then proceeded to help him pick out the pieces. Watson knew exactly which boards would work for him and before lunch was over, he was back at his uncle’s sloop with all the planking he would need. Watson now had to secure the fasteners, nails, wire for rigging, and the rest of the hardware. For this, he needed credit. There were no banks in the Virgin Islands in those days so a loan was out of the question. Watson went to Road Town next and approached Mr. J.R O’Neal who owned the dry goods store in town. On presenting his case and promising to repay with interest once the sloop was built, J.R told him to go ahead and take what he needed – ‘you can pay me when you’re able and forget the interest.’ This is how things were done back then; it was usually a simple handshake that closed a deal and was founded on honesty and integrity of the people in those days. Needless to say, Watson built his first sloop – I think it was the North Star or maybe the Majestic. J.R was paid back in full and Watson had the start he required to build more boats, beginning an independent life in the industry.

LIFE Is it just us,or is time getting shorter between the hosting of this annual event? It felt like just yesterday when we presented awards to the ‘Best of the BVI’ at Nanny Cay Marina for 2015! If you’re new to our Readers’ Choice Awards, a huge welcome. If you’re a returning voter, a nominee, or a previous winner fully aware of the event and eager to go, welcome back.

Readers’ Choice was originally created as an entertaining activity to recognise businesses, establishments, and individuals across the BVI, who have made a valuable contribution to the Territory’s wellness and prosperity; this acknowledgement spans a diverse range of categories covering the three areas of our magazine – LAND (property related), SEA (marine endeavours), and LIFE (BVI lifestyle). Initiating in 2011, each passing year the awards have witnessed an increase in popularity among readers and a surge in competition with the nominees. September 2015’s concluding ceremony at Nanny Cay was a thriving success with a multitude of activities to enjoy, amid the announcement of the winners.

Fresh for our 6th annual event, we introduce our proud in Association Sponsors Veuve Clicquot. We’ve also expanded the Readers’ Choice event so that it’s incorporative of the Virgin Islands as a whole – we are really excited about this development as now each of the categories will unveil three winners:

3) BEST OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS

Veuve Clicquot Business Woman of the Year Award 2016

Additionally, we’ve created a new category presented by Veuve Clicquot – Business Woman of the Year Award. Originally created in 1972 as a tribute to Madame Clicquot, the annual Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award champions the success of business women worldwide, who share the same qualities as Madame Clicquot: Her enterprising spirit, her courage, and the determination necessary to accomplish her aims. Highly prized and sought after, it is the first international award formed specifically to recognise the contribution that women have made to business life and is now regarded as the ‘Oscar’ for female entrepreneurs and business leaders around the World.

So, for the first time, we are proud to present this Award here in the Virgin Islands. Nominees are required to supply their name, a 200 – 300-word ‘Elevator Speech,’ including their education, achievements, and a photograph. Judging will take place, with a selection of three finalists prior to the final winner announcement at our Award’s event in October.

The VIPY RC categories are listed in alphabetical order. Voting commences online NOW at bvipropertyyacht.com The closing deadline for voting is 1 September 2016. Keep in mind, the longer that nominees are online, the more chance there is for them to get votes so nominate now if the company/individual you wish to see win is not there! We really hope you enjoy the 2016 awards and find the final results helpful in relishing residency or vacation in the Virgin Islands. Happy voting and best of luck to all nominees. bvipropertyyacht.com
