the incredible and internationally diverse Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival; an event that has formed a global following, promoting the BVI’s fierce passion for sailing, and exhibiting its worldly image as the capital for this nautical pastime. Springing forward first of our LAND articles is the cover feature which unveils the fantastic dual property in Sunset Watch and Sundowner on the tranquil private residence of Virgin Gorda’s Nail Bay. We follow suit with further answers to FAQs from our realtor expert Bonnie Dougall in the BVI Property Forum. She explains more about how to easily navigate the complications of buying and selling property in the British Virgin Islands. Review of Coral Hill House in Tortola reveals a charming story; a dream of travellers who journeyed the globe extensively in search of the best location and picturesque home to spend their winter months, while BVI HomeSense opens to some innovative ways to make a home even more attractive on the property market. Our biggest feature this issue from Chris Smith on North Sound and the people that made it the mecca for sailing and real estate, is the first in a series of articles covering the North Sound phenomenon. Moving to SEA, our Yacht Spotlight unveils Zenyatta, a luxurious sailing catamaran and the ‘Queen of Racing,’ – you will understand when you read the article. From Sea Level crewed charter chef Megan, delivers another tasty recipe in Citrus Kale Salad, while returning writer Kelly Bos provides helpful tips for that big family sailing trip you might be planning, or currently enjoying; also, maritime historian Geoff Brooks tells the tale of the Perseverance and its mysterious disappearance. At this moment, it is appropriate that we mention that the VIPY team were sad to learn last month of the passing of Captain Hugh Whistler, MBE – our previous resident historian. We wish his family well and are very grateful for his dedication to preserving BVI history, and generously contributing his profound knowledge to VIPY in previous years. In our LIFE section, House shows us the Things We Love through their coastal chic range – the first of two product placements exhibiting this theme. Innovative creative designer Jasmin Powell unveils her new clothing range mimiyuyuberlin available at Cooper Islands Seagrape boutique, and finally, the diligent Humane Society present their plans for the new animal shelter they have in construction. In closing, we wish you a great month and enjoyment of Spring Regatta – it is one of the BVI’s best occasions.

By angling the position of the home due north, Coral Hill House does not overlook the neighbouring properties and also avoids the brunt of the afternoon sun whilst still permitting plenty of light. Sunset views are guaranteed. Privacy was also the guiding force in the layout of the property. The spacious and airy master bedroom is a standalone building adjacent to the pool and is completely secluded from the two guest bedrooms on the opposite side of the property. With screened windows on three sides of the master bedroom, you can take advantage of the prevailing breezes and hear the lulling sound of the waves below. The guesthouse is its own gingerbread cottage with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a spacious porch along the full length of the building. An artist’s studio at the bottom of the driveway could easily be converted into a fourth bedroom. Underneath is an enclosed and secure garage. Even the driveway was carefully designed with a turning circle at the top and a bend halfway down, easily navigated in one turn. Due to this thoughtful layout, Coral Hill House would work well as a family home, or for a professional couple, and is ideally suited to vacation rentals. The fact that the owners did not rely on an outside project manager, but closely monitored the progress of the construction themselves, is evident in the high quality of the fixtures and finishing. Spending one week of every month in Tortola, the remaining time was

Set the tone Add appeal and accentuate your own unique style by incorporating a bit of colour into your home. Caribbean estates traditionally wear vibrant tropical hues to great effect, but even if you prefer natural tones, consider adding accents to enliven your space. Use the allure of the BVI as inspiration, and let your inner artistry take over. The guesthouse at Pineapple Place dons a lively coat of violet, as if freshly picked from its surrounding gardens.

Your own point of view Establishing your own personal relationship to nature’s best offerings is why owning property in the BVI is so alluring, and this is undoubtedly due to its world-class sweeping vistas. Giving attention to endless sapphire seas, and neighbourly nods from surrounding islands, make for an excellent way to while away the hours. Make the most of your view by planning your gardens and lounge areas, so they enhance your viewing experience. If possible, arrange multiple viewing angles so you and all your guests can relax, kick up your feet, and savour the splendour of island living.

With such upscale developments, the real estate market has never been more buoyant. But much of North Sound’s appeal is owed largely to the wealth of local personalities, which has made it the place it is today. North Sound has a very special place in my heart because it was the starting point for my BVI adventure when I arrived here in 1992.

My own history is inextricably linked with the progress of the real estate market and over the course of my career, I have sold some truly outstanding properties and met some remarkable people and lifelong friends. Let’s explore the stories of these people to tell the history of North Sound and how it has arrived at this point today. During the 19th Century, North Sound was described as the best harbour in the whole of the Virgin Islands but was overlooked by the British Government in favour of the flourishing port in St Thomas where the regular steam packet from Britain would visit. The harbour begins at Anguilla Point, is bordered to the south and east by the mainland of Virgin Gorda and by the islands of Little Saba (now known as Saba Rock), Prickly Pear and Moskito to the north. There is a channel through the reef called the King’s Channel deep enough to allow large vessels to pass without difficulty. This part of Virgin Gorda is not affected by the ground seas (large swells) during the winter tourist season like the southern end of Virgin Gorda, resulting in North Sound being ideal as an anchorage and for sailing all year round. The majority of the land in the North Sound was either Crown Land or owned by local families. According to former Premier of the BVI, Ralph

T. O’Neal, at that time the people of North Sound felt neglected by the government in Tortola even though, as shown in the first official census of the BVI in 1944, North Sound had close to a quarter of the total population of 4,500 people. In the 1950’s land in South Sound was sold by the Crown to local farmers to raise their cattle. Mr. O’Neal recalls helping to survey the land to ensure its correct distribution. Yet even as late as 1970, there was no electricity in North Sound and to reach Spanish Town, one had to navigate a rough trail on foot. Mr. O’Neal’s daughter and owner of the Fat Virgin Café at Biras Creek, Esther Wheatley, recalls her childhood jumping from rock to rock, up and down the hill on her daily walks to the beach in what she describes as very happy times. The advent of these two vital amenities in the early 1970s really heralded the beginning of North Sound’s gradual development. Mr. O’Neal had been the headmaster of what is now called the Robinson O’Neal Memorial Primary School. He was outspoken in his call for the careful and planned development of an area that he loved, born from a deep understanding of the people he lived and worked with. He recalls spending many weekends exploring and walking the land in the North Sound area. In a document written most likely around 1970 entitled The Development, Conservation and Preservation of the North Sound Harbour Area, Virgin Gorda,

Mr. O’Neal set out his vision for a planned development of the area and a clear call to action for the government to commission surveys and environmental impact studies of the area and formulate a comprehensive plan before permission for any further development be granted. He called for Prickly Pear and Necker Island to be declared National Parks to preserve the habitats of the abundant wildlife. Mr. O’Neal predicted that the North Sound would become “the Yachting Mecca of the Virgin Islands”. He was a true visionary and way ahead of the times. Even before the arrival of electricity, the first ‘outsiders’ had already bought land in North Sound, doing so because they loved Virgin Gorda; they loved the people and more importantly, they wanted to be a part of the local community. They got involved. They built properties sufficient for their needs to be able to enjoy the beauty of their surroundings and certainly not to detract from it. Mr. Stanley Washburn first sailed through the Virgin Islands in 1957 and fell in love with North Sound. He purchased the lease from the Crown for a plot of land at Anguilla Point at the entrance to the harbour and built on the land between 1959-60. His contractor? Ralph O’Neal’s brother Waldo and Cecil Rhymer. The house was simple in design, well- suited to the environment and has changed very little since then. John George was employed to care for the property and his son, Elmo, continues to do so even to this day. Mr. Washburn decided that www.bvipropertyyacht.com

a dock could be perceived as an invitation to visit; so invited guests had to wade ashore. Consequently, the marine life off the Anguilla Point beach is untouched and simply stunning. Anguilla Point remains in the Washburn family and continues to be passed down through the generations in accordance with Mr. Washburn’s wishes to keep the property as a memorial of simpler times in the BVI. The current family caretaker is Tyler Leinbach who first visited Anguilla Point for his sixth birthday in 1967. Says Tyler: “Bitter End was there in much smaller form and was still owned by Basil Symonette, Bert Kilbride owned Moskito Island [which had been sold in 1888 to John Richard Vanterpool for £5. Bert bought it in 1964 for $85,000 and built Drake’s Anchorage], Biras was under construction, Leverick was not in existence, and the only boat to pass through the Anguilla Point/ Moskito cut was the Chocolate Queen which ferried folks back and forth daily to work from Gun Creek to Tortola.” The North Sound may have moved on since then, but Anguilla Point remains unchanged. The plaque at the entrance to the property sums up the Washburn Family ethos. Eustatia Island (and Little Saba - thrown in the deal as it was thought to be too small to develop) was leased to Mr. Alan Hickok. According to his son, Elihu, Cecil Rhymer had until that time been raising goats on Eustatia. He was approached by Mr. O’Neal, a close family friend, and asked if he would approve of the island being leased to someone who could develop it. Mr. Rhymer was happy with the arrangement so long as it was for the benefit of the North Sound community. At the other end of the Sound, land at Little Bay (close to what is now the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda) was leased by the Crown to one of the first chef’s at Little Dix Bay. He didn’t develop it and the lease was subsequently purchased by a Puerto Rican family headed by Jose Beauchamp and his son, who built two modest homes to accommodate their family, enabling them to spend quality time in the place they loved. Similarly at Blunder Bay, a parcel of approx. 4.5 acres was leased to Mr. Robert Eastham and 22 acres were of freehold land were sold to a group at Mooney Bay.

An American, Leon Stackler bought 36 acres of freehold land at Leverick Bay. Unlike Anguilla Point and Blunder Bay which were owned by the Crown, Leverick Bay and Mooney Bay had been privately and locally owned. The East End area of Virgin Gorda, now referred to as Oil Nut Bay, was owned by Ralph O’Neal’s grandfather for many years before selling the 300 acres to Dr Eric O’Neal of St Thomas on the condition that he maintain the payment of taxes and never let the land lapse back to the Crown. The land remained in the O’Neal Family until recently and is now being developed by Victor International, a development we will discuss in a later article. North Sound was changing and ready to be discovered by the next generation of homebuyers. In the next edition’s article, we will explore the development of the Bitter End Yacht Club, Biras Creek Resort, and the next few decades of North Sound history through the stories of these early buyers. month is Captain Owen Johnson and First Mate/ Chef Brianna Theriault with their Gunboat 6203 Zenyatta. Zenyatta is a famous American champion thoroughbred racehorse whose nickname is ‘The Queen.’ The vessel is seen as ‘The Queen of Racing,’ hence the inspiration and adoption of the name. With the Gunboat ethos in mind of high-performance catamaran sailing combined with extravagant amenities, the common phrase often pegged for vehicles—‘built for speed and comfort’—is aptly suited to this vessel. Manufactured in 2003 by yacht builder Jaz Marine Pty Ltd in South Africa and naval architect Morrelli & Melvin, the boat has reached a top speed of 28.8 knots and accommodates six guests and two crew members to their desired destinations. In each room, air conditioning, reading lights, fans, and suave-looking fully equipped rest rooms comprise the sleeping areas. The Master cabin has an office/lounge area and a flat screen TV, and the port hull has a separate walk-in shower, granting a feeling of spacious luxury.

Making certain to facilitate the high performance that the yacht advertises with North 3Di sails, retractable rudders and daggerboards for cruising areas requiring a shallow draft, and a 14’ carbon fibre pure inflatable dinghy with 60hp Yamaha outboard engines, Zenyatta is a smooth cruising experience. A 100” projector screen that turns the aft cockpit into home theatre and two flat screen TVs connected to a hard drive containing 2,000 movies and TV shows, oblige guests who may wish to indulge their less-active senses; however, for those visitors who seek to explore what a tropical climate offers, watersports’ instruments—SUP boards, inflatable kayaks, wakeboards, and kite boarding gear—are offered. With the yacht achieving its share of travelling throughout the Caribbean, East Coast US, and the Mediterranean, when not sailing, Zenyatta can be found nestled in the ‘yachting village’ of Nanny Cay harbour. In an era when the cruising catamaran is a strong preference to the traditional monohull, the more variety offered in the BVI, the happier guests will be and Zenyatta more than exceeds the wishes of its visitors.

Words and photography by Megan Schlobohm, Chef – SV Lolalita

The food of a vacation is becoming the centre of attention, and as a chef, I love this shift. Every new charter week onboard Lolalita comes with the opportunity to stretch my creativity muscles and invent exciting, surprising new combinations. Reading guests’ preference sheets to prepare for their time onboard, I get excited to see ‘adventurous’ and ‘gourmand’ written in the cuisine sections. To make guests’ acquaintance through their preference sheet is a skill that all charter yacht crew learn over time; through reading about guests beforehand, and then experiencing their personalities in actuality when their time onboard comes to fruition. But the real art is reading between the lines; knowing where you can be ‘creative’ and where to be more ‘safe.’ A favourite group of people that I thoroughly enjoy cooking for is none other than the young generation. I love building kids’ menus, mainly because I love the wonder and awe that they express when beautiful culinary creations are placed before them for their dining pleasure, and even moreso their surprise when it tastes good. The world is a magical place to kids and their energy fuels my imagination, but they can also be very tricky customers. Their developing palates tend to require the ‘safe’ side of menu design. It’s simultaneously a big responsibility and great fun. One guest – a mother – learned of my adoration for fresh, wholesome foods and begged me to help her kids learn to enjoy eating healthier throughout the week. I gladly accepted the challenge, loving the idea of opening her kids’ eyes to the big, delicious world of healthy dining.

And so came the inspiration for this splendid salad that I serve every week on Lolalita, to people of all ages, all palates, and all desires – I’ve yet to receive anything but a plate practically licked clean. Nutritious kale? Delicious flavours? It’s a ‘win-win’ in my recipe book. And, yes, the kids loved it.

Serve even portions on your frozen plates and garnish with oranges, pine nuts, and red pepper flakes. Kale is hearty, so leftovers store very well.

Every year,

exciting escapes are planned and realised in the beautiful British Virgin Islands. The high seas and the islands play host to many happy wanderers, including families looking for an adventure—a family sailing trip delivers. What you pack can make all the difference. If this is your first trip with your family on the open water, you might be wondering what to bring and what to see; here are some tips to accomplish the best in both brackets.

Babies and Toddlers: Your floating accommodation will likely be an upgrade in views and mobility, but smaller in space. Since quarters are efficient but close, consider the sleeping arrangements. Fold down travel cots work brilliantly in the cabins, especially the lightweight ones that are long and narrow. A travel cot also provides a break from worrying about your toddler’s location and can serve as a handy barrier to areas you want blocked off. Typical charter boats do not have netting at the life lines to contain little ones, so lifejackets are important and should be warn at all times; a good rule for older children too. It becomes the uniform of the boat with no arguments about putting it on each time. Easily packed down baby inflatable floating devices with canopy’s make it possible for little ones to join in the water fun, adding to the family experience.

For families with wee ones: the perfect pairing? Cooper or Peter Island’s quiet beaches, boardwalks, and paths for the stroller, provides plenty of shade, great restaurants, and a lovely cafe at Cooper for caffeine ingestion for sleep deprived parents.

The pre-schoolers and school-aged children: The BVI usually has incredible weather but there are no guarantees. To stave off rainy day blues with small children, set up a colouring/entertainment area for poor weather, quiet time while parents finish their coffee, or even a break from the noon day sun with crayons, markers, books and games in the galley. Beware of the trampoline – it is not for jumping on despite its unfortunate name. Encourage star gazing from it – sailing is also a great time to learn about the ocean, winds, and the vessel so create opportunities for your school-aged child to pick up some sailing tips and how to read a chart. Many captains will be happy to teach and offer an incredible experience. Pick up a sea guide for the underwater life; many children and adults alike find it very interesting to learn names of snorkel and dive sightings.

Parents and the middle ages: the perfect pairing? Norman Island or Leverick Bay for pirate lore and pirate performances, fun restaurants, and great beaches. Also check out The Indians and The Caves for exciting snorkelling adventures.

The teens: Space is limited so pack light. Assure your teen—prone to over packing—that sixteen outfits won’t be necessary even for the most fashion conscious. For the majority of the trip, one usually wears a bathing suit, t-shirt, or cover up for the boat or island hopping,

42

VI PROPERTY & YACHT

Published by aLookingGlass Ltd.

As for gear, most charter boats are kitted out with stand up paddle boards, snorkel sets, kayaks and the like for anchoring and beach fun, so you won’t need to pack much entertainment. If bringing technology, remember to use wet bags and Ziploc bags for careful transfers from boat to shore. And speaking of technology, here is a tip I learned from Tim Schaaf of Jet Stream that works well for the selfie-taker who isn’t so keen on having constant sea salty hair – put conditioner in your hair and then rinse with fresh water prior to taking the plunge; it helps facilitate a comb getting through your hair after snorkelling expeditions. Of course, one has to capture the beauty of our islands with the camera, but remember, the best way to experience the BVI is hands free.

Families with Teen Spirit: the perfect pairing? The Baths and Jost Van Dyke for cool climbs, bubbly pool, funky shops, beach games, and excellent restaurants.

The rest of the packing list:

A duffel or wet bag packs down well 3 swimsuits 1-2 rash-guards 1-2 coverups Toiletries Beach towels are likely provided by the boat. If not provided bring lightweight and quick dry micro-fibre towels Sunscreen, some boats have preferences both for sea life and for the boat A few outfits/shoes for restaurants/ hikes/ sightseeing Flip-flops/sandals Pj’s, it can get cool at night! Raincoat Sunglasses Cash Camera Small bag to carry small necessities to shore Kid/baby friendly food if shopping for yourself and if having the boat provide let them know of any dietary sensitivities or restrictions for any of the passengers Beach toys

Take these tips and have a wonderful sail. With the stunning beauty and incredible experience, it will be a trip like no other, remembered through the years.

SEA Words and photography by Geoffrey Brooks, Curator – Virgin Islands Maritime Museum

It was a hazy warm morning on Monday September 9, 1932. Five sloops laden with cargo and passengers had cleared customs out of West End to make their journey to St. Thomas. The boats consisted of the Wonder Why J.E.W. Georges boat from Road Town, the Daisy which belonged to the Martins of Soldier Hill, and the Consolation, Sonny Henley’s sloop from Cane Garden Bay. Ten minutes behind were the Perseverance—Reginald Tomar’s boat from East End—and the Guyana belonging to Capt. Rudolphus Hodge of Cane Garden Bay. There was nothing unusual to mark the day; there was very light wind and about halfway down the Ghut (the area between Johnson’s Reef and Red Hook), the wind died altogether. The boats were forced to take to the oars and row to make headway.

44

VI PROPERTY & YACHT

Published by aLookingGlass Ltd.

It wasn’t long before a breeze returned and they thankfully shipped their oars and resumed sailing. The wind steadily increased as they reached the end of the Ghut and made their tack to the west to head for Charlotte Amalie. The sloops struggled to maintain their sails with the wind growing stronger and stronger and they were soon racing into the teeth of a gale. In the 1930’s, the word ‘hurricane’ was not in use. These powerful storms were called gales and were referred to by dates instead of being named. The weather worsened and as the sloops got closer to the harbour’s entrance, they could see the gale warning flag flying on Signal Hill. The Wonder Why and Daisy were first to make it in. The wind entering the harbour was blowing from different directions and it took expert tacking and boat handling to make it to the dock. I have raced in many St. Thomas Regatta’s and can confirm that the wind is very tricky, often changing in an instant while entering Charlotte Amalie. Races have been won and lost at the last moment due to this phenomenon.

The next boat to reach was the Consolation, having a terrible time negotiating the entrance. The crew struggled as the ‘Consey’ (as she was nicknamed) was knocked one way and the then the next. Finally between the skill of the captain and crew, and the prayers and coaching of the ones who had already made the dock, she too found safety. Now it was the turn of the last two sloops to attempt to pass the gauntlet. They had left minutes behind the others and were now facing the worst of the storm. The Perseverance went in and met a solid wall of wind and water. No one is really sure what happened next or what they saw; it may have been a water spout or a tornado spawned by the storm. The maximum winds that day were estimated at 90 mph with the likely hood of stronger gusts. Given the unstable nature of normal conditions in the entrance, this was a recipe for disaster. What people on shore and in the sloop behind did see was described as a white smoke like foam or mist and it was into this mist that the Perseverance vanished. When it cleared, the boat was gone – there was nothing to be seen of her. She had 13 people on board, 12 men and One woman. This left one sloop, attempting to make it to safety: the Guyana. After seeing the Perseverance disappear and being driven by the teeth of

the storm to the south away from the harbour’s entrance, Capt. Rudolphus Hodge or Dulphie as he was known, made a heroic decision. Rather than risk the life of his crew and passengers, he chose to sacrifice his boat. With the relentless wind driving him South and struggling with all his might to control the tiller, he drove the Guyana straight onto Buck Island at full speed destroying his sloop, but saving all on board. His courage saved the lives of seven people, including his own. The next morning after the storm had passed and the weather cleared, they were picked up and brought safely to shore. It is sad to say that those on board the Perseverance were not so fortunate. There was never a trace of them or their sloop ever seen again – not even a piece of wood or other debris washed up in the harbour. She vanished without a trace and stands today along with the Fancy Me as one of the Virgin Islands’ worst tragedies. As the anguish and sadness overwhelmed the community of East End, the usual melee of a curse or unlucky number 13, or every kind of obeah made its rounds to try and give a reason to such a sudden and unexplainable loss of life. In the end, it can only be attributed to the mysteries and powers of the sea and the universe to take us at will.

LIFE Words by Stephen L France Photography by Lucy Blackmore, AVEDA Berlin

Two complementing components construct today’s successful artist – ‘passion,’ and ‘drive’ to transport those cherished ideas to life. Jasmin Elizabeth Powell exemplifies this concept and like the rare few individuals who have catapulted into the public domain with a vocation in creativity, she has found a career in trendy clothing design for children. Uniting her experience in the European fashion industry, styling for Red or Dead founder Wayne Hemingway, creating Avant Garde hair sculptures for AVEDA Berlin runway shows, handcrafting luxury couture handbags for Rui Duarte, and as art coordinator at The Be Smart Academy in Berlin, Jasmin found her calling. Ironically however, while attempting to inspire children via art at the academy, she found the reverse effect and was herself stimulated by them. “It was at this stage that I naturally combined my two passions—designing, and working with children; it was here ‘mimiyuyuberlin’ was born,” said Jasmin in reference to the birth of her children’s-wear brand; the title was formed from the nickname of her beloved niece Amelia ‘Mimi’ Powell. Sporting a playful, modern theme for the young adventurer, Jasmin sees her clothing line as representative of a transition from city to beach, utilising chic, simple silhouettes that focus on the print. In fuelling her inspiration, Jasmin unveiled her clothing design ideas to her pupils at the academy and was rewarded with insightful feedback. “I would show them my designs and listen intently to their input,” said the designer. “Their intelligence, thirst for knowledge, and sense of adventure have really affected my outlook on life and continue to do so to this day.” Growing up, Jasmin spent a lot of time in Africa where her father was born, and senses her allure to bright colours originated from the vivacious scenery of the continent. Also encouraged by the scene of the south coast of England where she was born, the traditional appearance of her school uniform attracted her to classic styles in clothing design as well – a stark contrast to her adoration of the vibrant.

“I spent my early years travelling over Europe every summer which inspired me to move to Berlin when I was just 21 years old,” continued Jasmin in recollecting the origins of her career and her favourability toward European fashion. “The diversity, deep history, and people I met sparked inspiration in me. I worked for several different fashion houses – Scandinavian, Italian and of course German.” In March 2014, Jasmin emigrated to discover the delights of the BVI and more specifically, Cooper Island. “Working and living at Cooper has inspired me more than I ever could have imagined, the ocean in particular,” said the enthusiastic designer. “I have never visited a country that has such an array of incredible animals and sea life...I try to see things as children do in order to design. I became so fascinated with the abundance of hermit crabs we have on island. The crabs remind me of alien-like creatures hence, ‘Diving into Space’ being the title of my first clothing collection.” With her first T-Shirt range seeing Berlin based artist Niels De Jong creating an array of sea creature illustrations in his renowned abstract style, Jasmin felt this was the most innovative method of bestowing uniqueness in her clothing. “I knew I had to have Niels on board…his illustrations are popping up all over Europe, in furniture design and print,” Jasmin explained. “His fun yet complex designs play with shape, colour and texture, which completely embody what ‘mimiyuyuberlin’ stands for in children’s clothing.” With the launch of her website mimiyuyuberlin.com and the first collection ‘Diving into Space’ this spring— exclusively to the Seagrape Boutique at Cooper Island and Nantucket USA—Jasmin seeks further exposure in California this summer to meet with various boutiques. Her optimism lies in continuing to design modern, future-thinking children’s wear: “I want to push myself further with each new collection whilst continuing to stay true to my aesthetic.”

Q & A with Nancy Woodfield Pascoe Interview by Stephen L France Photography by Shannon Gore and draft architectural design by Thor Downing, Roger Downing & Partner Co. Ltd.

The Humane Society of the BVI was established in 1975 to promote animal welfare and preservation of wildlife in the Territory. In a recent interview with Nancy Pascoe—a member of the Humane Society’s Board of Directors—she talked to VIPY about the news and progress of the new animal shelter with the phenomenal efforts of the BVI community. The Animal Shelter as it is more commonly known was originally supported by non-profit membership of individuals and corporate members, whose annual membership fees provided financial assistance to daily operations. Ms. Tessa Gunter took on the role as the first Humane Society manager; a position which she held until she passed away in April 2013. Since 1997, the assistant manager of the Animal Shelter has been Vijay Bissoodutt who then became the manager in 2013.

What is the BVI Humane Society and when was it founded? In December 2013, the Humane Society of the BVI was legally registered as a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) under the Virgin Islands Non-Profit Organisations Act, 2012. It is governed by a board consisting of Nancy Pascoe, Colin Riegels, and Nigel McPhail. The society is no longer a membership based organisation, but donations are received as a result of animals adopted, fundraising activities, grants, and bequeaths. Additionally, the Humane Society provides revenue generating services such as boarding pets, grooming, and sale of pet supplies. This income allows the recurrent expenses for the Animal Shelter to be provided for, with any additional being saved in the new Animal Shelter development fund. Annual fundraising events include Gaming Night, the Dog Show, and an auction entitled Paws for a Cause.

52

VI PROPERTY & YACHT

Published by aLookingGlass Ltd.

What is the intended purpose of the new shelter? Where will it be located? And when will it be finished? The Animal Shelter is currently located at Johnson’s Ghut. At this location, the Humane Society was able to construct a facility with larger boarding kennels, a veterinary clinic, multiple yards for dogs, and the ability to care for animals other than cats and dogs. In 2013, we purchased one acre of land at Josiah’s Bay, Tortola for $150,000, using funds saved over the past 10 - 15 years for the construction of this new facility. As the land is located close to a salt pond, we are very aware of the environmental sensitivity of the area. As I work for the National Parks Trust, I want to ensure we build a sustainable facility and have therefore invited Dr Shannon Gore, former Marine Biologist at the Conservation and Fisheries Dept. to be our advisor for the project as she literally wrote the book, Best Management Practices: A Guide to Reducing Erosion in the British Virgin Islands.

Please tell me more about donations of money and building materials for the cause Detailed construction costs will be generated from the architectural drawings. Construction will take place in phases and it is hoped that once planning permission is acquired early this year, phase one can begin. The Humane Society has approximately $200,000 available at present that will be used to begin phase one. Fundraising events will be set up to encourage people to donate towards the cost of a kennel, or square footage. All donors will be acknowledged on artistically designed plaques at the new facility. We are also writing grant applications to charity foundations and have been successful in acquiring $25,000 from the Martha Morse Foundation in the USA.

scan here How will the Humane Society progress in the future? We are developing an awareness campaign for spaying and neutering pets in order to create a future community that has less stray animals. We will be identifying members of the community from all cultural backgrounds to pose with their pets that have been spayed and neutered with messages about the health benefits and responsibilities that pet ownership brings. We would like to encourage members of the community to volunteer at the Animal Shelter. We have two full time and one part time member of staff, but the Shelter is open 365 days of the year and the animals must be cared for by compassionate people. With lots of cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies available for adoption, the diligent work of the Humane Society is never done. It is with further assistance from the community that the organisation will make those huge strides to accomplish their goals as a BVI animal haven.
