My stories have always been centred on our local vessels and events that impacted us here in the Virgin Islands. Today, however, I would like to expand my boundaries and tell the

the lumber. This steady commerce kept Reg busy for two years until his last and mysterious voyage in May of 1941. Reg had loaded rice in Bee Gee bound for Havana. There he loaded sugar and went to Venezuela. Once in Venezuela, he discharged his entire Bequia crew and signed on a Spanish speaking crew. From there, they sailed to Mobile and loaded lumber destined for Havana, Cuba. After they left Mobile, they were never heard from again until a United States Coast Guard

She was eventually towed back to Mobile and sold to an American for scrap. No trace or word was ever heard of Captain Reg Mitchell or his crew and the story of the Gloria Colita drifted into Caribbean folklore where her legend and that of her seven-foot captain has continued to grow ever since. Stories and theories abound as to what happened. Some say that the Spanish crew mutinied and killed Reg only to be lost themselves on the ship’s tow boat. It’s rumoured that there was food on the table in the cabin and that the ship’s dog was alive on board when

The true story? We’ll probably never know. The question that nags me, is why did Reg change crews in Venezuela? If I knew the answer to that, I think the mystery might begin to unravel. I have often said to our culinary arts scribe Megan Schlobohm that being a yacht charter chef has got to be one of the most challenging jobs in the world. I say this because I was a bartender for one of the busiest BVI restaurants – Myett’s; during high season, you could get ‘slammed’ as the expression goes and it was about meeting the drink orders hurled our way in quick fashion. The unique difference of the catering industry whether on land or sea is there’s more demand than the act of supply; you don’t have to go through the arduous positon of selling something, but you best make certain you deliver on the customers’ requests. The step up for caterers on the sea is that these ‘soldiers’ are obliged to be at the call of their guests 24/7 – there is no going home after a shift. For the guests’ vacation time, the yacht chef is on call all the way through and one has to applaud the phenomenal level of commitment and deep composure that must be maintained. In addition to this, the yacht chefs of the Virgin Islands have to be at the top of their game; the BVI is especially famous as the yachting capital of the world so there’s extra gravity to be best culinary expert on these luxury boats, presenting the epitome of gourmet cuisine in aesthetic and taste. Chef Megan of Lolalita is self-taught so her phenomenal skills are only limited by her creativity; essentially, this means there are no restrictions. Over the years, her feature page From Sea Level has presented some incredible meal, dessert, and beverage recipes that will make readers crave a yacht charter holiday. “I think you’re born hardwired – it’s a deep passion,” – Christine Taylor. Interviewing Christine Taylor was a true delight. Getting to the depths of what inspires an artist, we discussed the fact the creative arts are innate. With Christine, her trigger to encourage her gifts came as an infant viewing a painting of a coastal scene with coconut trees and light sparkling off them. She questioned how she would paint this threedimensional effect in her own artwork. Following this early curiosity, the watercolour artist was born. “You have to place a dynamic spirit in your work…I always paint the eyes first - once I get the eyes and the spirit of what I’m trying to accomplish, everything else is easy.” – Christine Taylor

Being well-travelled is perhaps one of the fundamental reasons why Petra’s art-form is so diverse. The uniqueness expressed in her works as a mixed media artist is powerfully expressed in the visuals that catch her attention. She has accomplished the arduous task of walking the BVI – all the way from Nanny Cay to Trellis. On the journey, she’s been granted the perspectives that many will miss, driving in vehicles. One of her greatest achievements was the physical and emotional challenge of self-discovery on the pilgrimage known as the Camino de Santiago de Compostela – further inspiration for her art. “One of the things that inspires me is that there’s always contrast in life. There is always the positive and the negative. I remember thinking of Picasso’s work when I first saw Desirée’s art at the August 2014 Bamboushay culture event. “Pop Art is a style of art that makes reference to recognisable aspects of popular culture, such as people, music, [and] brands,” Desirée explained to VIPY back in October 2014. “These popular culture references are then often times addressed outside of their usual context and presented in a visually stimulating, new, and interesting way.” The artist described her allure to her occupation as a vocation – a calling. In our July issue, we offered an extract from one of aLookingGlass’s publications Trails & Tales. Since September is a quiet time of the year in the BVI, challenging residents with how best to entertain themselves, we’re offering another exciting walk that may fill the void for activity on one of your vacant weekends. If you haven’t heard, this is the ultimate guide book to make certain you don’t get lost on the BVI’s most beautiful hikes, and absorb as much of the island’s natural environment as possible. Author Ron Beard came to the Territory in 2011 on a two-year contract as Deputy and then Acting Chief Planner in the Premier’s Office. After several DIY hikes, he realised that there was no guidance literature on the island for this hobby. After collaboration with aLookingGlass and sponsorship from Sir Richard Branson, Henry Jarecki, Biwater International, VP Bank, and the BVI Tourist Board, Trails & Tales was conceived.

The helpful staff will gladly show you around, point out items of note and regale you with anecdotes from the past. Amongst many interesting features there are several formal rooms furnished as they were half a century or more ago, with artefacts from much earlier period. The old building also plays host to a comprehensive (but mouldering) library, the unique National Stamp Collection and ‘The Quaker Room’ telling the eventful story of that sect and its influence on the islands from some 250yrs ago. There is also a wonderful garden laid out by Margaret Barwick wife of David R Barwick CBE, Governor of the BVI between 198286. However, squeezed by competition from elsewhere, the business has recently closed, but it is to be hoped that the new users of the handsome property will respect its heritage and maintain its fabric. Opposite this the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Commercial Division sits in judgement on issues related to alleged business misdemeanours. Sir James Olva Georges, O.B.E., M.B.E., K.B. 1880-1976, after whom the square is named, was a distinguished public servant, community leader and member of the Legislative and Executive Councils as well as the first BVIslander to be knighted for services to the Territory.

Imagine the market scene in the middle of last century, before Trust Funds replaced farming as the territory’s principal source of income and before the sea bed was reclaimed and Waterfront Drive constructed. This little square and the stretch of land beyond to the original town dock, illustrated below in the painting by respected local artist Ruben Vanderpool, was where the bountiful produce of the land was brought by precipitous donkey-track and by locally built sloops from farms across the islands, to trade in the local market and to export to St Thomas, St Croix and farther afield.
