Long hot sunny days are guaranteed here in the BVI and one of life’s great pleasures is to spend time relaxing at home enjoying the views and the sunshine; however, this summer has been challenging for property owners as there has been very little rain. On July 9, 2015, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) shared some statistics for the period January to June 2015 which showed that only 3.5 inches of rain had fallen, with most of that falling before March. By way of comparison, during the same period in 2014, rainfall totalled just under 14 inches. As a result, the BVI has been on drought watch for a number of months, but extended periods without rain are not uncommon here, if you are currently designing or building a house or are simply low on water, these tips will help.

Landscaping: Although there is currently an abundance of flamboyant trees in full bloom with their deep orange flowers lighting up the hillsides, there are many plant species that are suffering from the lack of water. Easy tips for protecting your residential gardens include:

Acquire plant species that can flourish in dry conditions wherever
possible. These include Oleander, Bougainvillea, Ixoras, Euphorbia and the Succulent family
•
Use soil moist products which absorb lots of water and position them
around the roots of your plants. They will release moisture slowly helping your plants with an ongoing water supply
• • •
Use mulch around the plants. This helps to keep your gardens attractive
but will also slow down the evaporation process Build a berm around your plants to maximise the amount of water they
can absorb; they are hugely practical
• •
If not covered, keep an eye on the water level in your pool and expect
to top it up twice a week – this can be challenging when your main water supply is limited In the height of summer, switch the filtration from the skimmer to the
main drain and the jets instead. If the water level does go lower than the skimmer, your pump will not be affected and the pool will continue to have the water circulated. If you are away or cannot top up the pool, this will give

assurance that the pool will remain fully operational Sometimes in the middle of summer, the level of loss through

If you have multiple cisterns, try and keep one exclusively for rain water

If you do have town supply, make sure your cistern is filling up on a

common problem that can consume significant amounts of water so it is wise having a plumber give everything the once over

Evan K. Marshall Ltd. worked with several interior contractors including Genesis Yacht line and Mobil Art, along with the original owners to create a theme which was ‘something spectacular.’ The founder, Evan K. Marshall came from a family of avid sailors, drawing boats since he was four years old, and professionally starting his company in 1991 after six years working as a yacht designer. Having held a long standing relationship working on projects for the original owners—John and Jenette Staluppi—Evan had an ideal picture in his mind for his interior masterpiece upon hearing the name, Diamonds are Forever. “It is a valuable aspect of any designer to have a long standing relationship with a client because you understand their goals and expectations, which makes the project run more smoothly to ensure they Hybrid 2021 Concept Design are happy with the end result,” said Evan K. The yacht is one of several boats once built and possessed by the Staluppis, which carries the name of a James Bond movie, as John liked the association of his boats with the film for their optimal balance of performance and luxury. Upon entering Diamonds are Forever through sliding glass doors, the sensation of royalty is felt as you venture into what appears to be a palace in the entrance foyer containing a mirrored elevator decorated with Swarovski crystals. The main salon area contains the most expensive acquired piece of furniture on the boat; worth 25,000 Euros, the dining table comfortably provides space for 12 guests as they enjoy a gourmet meal on a work of art incorporating glass, chrome, and special LED lighting. A second indoor social space, the Sky Lounge, features Diamonds are Forever’s full service bar along with a second dining table and an adjoining alfresco area, allowing guests to enjoy the outdoors under a shaded area in the comfort of air conditioning.
The outside decks provide additional space to relax or entertain, including plush outdoor sofas and a spacious hot tub. The galley matches the sumptuous interior of the rest of the vessel, as the elegant space contains wood with a high gloss finish, granite countertops, and is fully functional with state-of-the-art appliances to prepare all types of cuisine. Diamonds are Forever welcomes 12 overnight guests to stay in one of six lush state rooms, tastefully adorned with deluxe furnishings and each with its own marble en suite bathroom and entertainment system. “The tufted fabric wall panels made of silk were chosen to replicate the diamond pattern which we felt gave a richness to the rooms,” said Evan. The master stateroom contains a cream and champagne coloured bedspread with crystals woven into the fabric, and features mirrored ceilings to give the illusion of greater space for the owners’ comfort. www.bvipropertyyacht.com

Specially designed for the ease of its guests, the yacht is equipped with
an interface which uses iPad Minis to control everything on board including the leisure and entertainment facilities, lighting, curtains, and temperature. Evan boasts that the most unique feature of Diamonds are Forever is what they call the ‘Beach Club’ located at the aft of the boat. A garage door folds down to allow the tender to exit and transforms into a 10” by 10” deck area with teak floors just six inches above water level. Guests can enjoy loungers and swimming right off the boat when she is anchored, catering to yachting lifestyle desires. Interior design of this ostentatious nature is on average a two-and-a-half year process, which begins at the time of the exterior build. “Every detail, every knob, every fabric, every stone, everything has to be studied and selected and decided upon. We arrange numerous meetings to agree upon the best options to present to our clients, but as designers we are under pressure because we can’t allow the development of the interior to delay the boats completion,” said Evan. Like her name, Diamonds are Forever is a diamond out on the water, representing wealth, class, and superiority extending a royal experience on the ocean like no other.

This is how I feel about the Virgin Islands – a melting pot of so many different cultures, traditions, stories, sounds, flavours, and colours – it is a feast for the senses. Having lived on the islands for many years, I feel it is my home, and yet I learn something new about it and its people all the time; it’s magic and familiarity in one warm, breezy, Caribbean hug. With such inspiration constantly surrounding me, my intrigue for diversity always finds its way into the galley. When I found a certain combination of ingredients available in the stores recently, I knew I had to make one of my favourite first course dishes. It is a cornucopia of textures, flavours, smells, and shades; a perfect recipe to enjoy in the sundry VI.
Seared Tomato and Fig Burrata
1 medium onion, diced 20 very small tomatoes (San Marzano, cherry, or plum) Olive oil ¼ cup balsamic vinegar ¼ cup orange juice 1 TBSP honey 5 oz dried figs, diced into large chunks Salt and pepper 1 head garlic, thinly sliced Almonds, thinly sliced Burrata Cheese Fresh Tarragon Fresh cracked black pepper

In a medium pan, sautée onion and tomatoes in olive oil until tomatoes have sear marks. Deglaze pan with balsamic, orange juice, and honey. Add in figs, salt and pepper to taste. In a separate pan, sautée garlic until crispy and slightly browned, like ‘chips.’ To assemble, place the burrata on your plate or platter of choice (this can be individual servings or one large dish for the table). Spoon the tomatoes and figs around the burrata, including all the juices. Garnish with sautéed garlic, almonds, tarragon, and pepper.

SEA A blue moon occurs when there are two full moons in the same month. It doesn’t happen often so when one occurred on the last day in July—Friday 31—the day before the renowned August Festival Sloop Races, I didn’t pay much attention. I will know better next time. It was the 12th Annual Festival Sloop Shootout and Heritage Regatta featuring two days of traditional wooden sloop races; an event highlighted by the race between our Premier the Hon. D. Orlando Smith and our Royal Governor His Excellency John S. Duncan on ‘August Tuesday’ morning.

I have been organising these races for all 12 years since we at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College revived what had once been a central part of our annual Emancipation celebrations. It was meant to promote the Maritime Heritage of the Virgin Islands along with the development of a National Maritime Museum and new initiatives in traditional sloop construction. The past 11 years had seen many exciting moments that always included some sort of mishap and damage to hull and rig. This year, however, was exceptional. Two weeks before the races, everything was going according to plan. The boats were being readied and pre-race publicity had already commenced. The new poster had been designed and printed and things seemed routine. It would be our new Governor’s first sloop race and he was determined to make a good show of himself. He had already gained experience racing on our sloops in the Spring Regatta and Foxy’s Wooden Boat Regatta where he captured 3rd and 1st places. He was scheduled for two practice sessions on Intrepid, the 100 year-old sloop brought over from St. Croix two years ago. The practices took place outside Nanny Cay Marina where all of our traditional sloops are docked and the first one was held on July 23 at 3pm. I tagged along and it was a good two hours of tacking instruction and getting a feel for the helm. The next week saw press releases, radio interviews, and TV promotion which fuelled the fire as to who would win. Over the years, the Premier has held the lead in victories with 6 - 3 won against the preceding Governors; I don’t know of any other country where the
two heads of state compete in a competition like this. I know for sure it’s unique to the British Overseas Territories of which we are one. The second and final practice for Governor Duncan was on Friday July

Visitors flock to the British Virgin Islands for a temporary taste of paradise. They seek the sand and sun, beautiful scenery, Caribbean culture, and of course, our beautiful ocean. It is up to us—the residents who are fortunate enough to call the islands our home —to protect our ocean by knowing how to treat our marine life with respect and keep our land and waters clean. Marine conservation is defined as the protection and preservation of ecosystems in oceans and seas. It focuses on both the restoration of existing damage caused by human impact and works to limit future damage by pollution and other factors which are harmful to these habitats. For the past three years, Dolphin Discovery on Tortola has been educating the youth through free marine conservation programmes which are taught at local schools followed by a an educational visit to the park. Every month, the programme leaders choose a new topic and collaborate with 15 of their marine biologists in order to make sure the information is accurate and as enriching as possible. In addition to these classes, they also organise regular beach clean-ups, working in collaboration with the BVI Tourist Board, Conservation and Fisheries Department, and the Agriculture Department.

What man-made factors affect the ocean?
The BVI is home to lots of areas with mangroves. Mangroves provide valuable nursery areas for juvenile fish and crustaceans and are also an important source of nutrients for the adjacent marine ecosystem. Not only are they important shelters for marine life, but they also help to protect the coastline from serious erosions during tropical cyclones.

Martha Tiffany served as the executive pastry chef at The Dove Restaurant and Wine Bar for the 2014-2015 high season, and is proud to be the artist behind the picturesque displays of delicious sweets which taste just as outstanding as they look. Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, Martha obtained her education at the University of Cincinnati, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Entrepreneurial Business, followed by an Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts from the Midwest Culinary institute. “I’ve always had a sweet tooth. As a child I would hide a bag of powdered sugar under my bed and eat it with a spoon,” said Martha. It is no surprise that Martha is a passionate visual artist, particularly drawing on Realism, but she decided to choose a career in the culinary profession instead. She admitted that her background and love for visual arts has played a significant role in the creation and presentation of her pastries.
Like a traditional artist, Martha carries a sketchbook of recipes wherever she goes, where she jots down ideas for flavour combinations, pictures of presentation, and even an idea of the quantities she will use. Martha believes that the visual appeal of a dish, and especially a dessert, is important not only to the chef who is allowed more creativity, but also to the customer who is made intrigued by something edible for more than just the taste. “People eat with their eyes first. But the trick to artistic culinary skills is to learn to balance great flavours with beautiful presentation,” said Martha with a smile. A typical day preparing pastries for Martha begins in the early afternoon when she takes out the icings and desserts she has prepared the night before and organises them in the fridge. She then warms her cakes and custards in the oven, but on days when she makes desserts from scratch, it can take up to four hours. www.bvipropertyyacht.com

JOURNEY FOR SURVIVAL Mark Wollner’s Final Entry Introduction by Nick Cunha, Edited by Lauren Charley
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey on April 29, 1958, Mark Wollner began his career as an electrician working for his father. After a rewarding career, he moved with his family and beloved son Jack to the British Virgin Islands in 1999 with the intention to retire. Instead, Mark started Island Time Ltd. Electrical business together with Leroy Nichols. At this time, he also started MMM Power Boat Rentals as a side business. This was later renamed to Island Time Powerboat Rentals. In 2006 he finally retired as an electrician, running the boat business together with his wife Katrin as his mainstay. He adored the sea and loved helping people, so he became one of VISAR’s valuable volunteers, bringing with him experience as an EMT volunteer for the ambulance services in New Jersey. In his own words, Mark Wollner was on “borrowed time,” and he accepted it. He was no stranger to death because his heart had already stopped beating in the midst of previous surgical procedures. It was as if Mark had set his own ‘terms’ with God upon being diagnosed in 2006 with Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma, (a rare type of cancer which only affects two in a million people, causing large fatty tumours to grow in the pelvic

area), and somehow he had managed to extend his ‘contract’ of five years in order to live another four. Anyone who knew Mark Wollner, wasn’t at all surprised by his unwillingness to give up. Sloan Kettering in New York was treating him from his diagnosis to May 2011, when they gave up on him. Not ready to surrender, he found Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) in Tulsa, Oklahoma who saved his life in November 2011. At a revisit in October 2014, it was discovered that the cancer had spread past its usual area—Mark had by then endured six surgeries. On December 4, 2014, he was rushed into an emergency 12-hour surgery at the CTCA, followed by what began as a speedy recovery, but resulted in a downward spiral involving two additional major surgeries. Dr. Pierre Greeff and his staff performed their best and gave all they could to continue giving Mark chances at life until he returned home in April. The following journal entry was delivered by Mark Wollner May 24, 2015 via email, from his hospital bed in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It has been modestly edited so that it is as close to his words as possible. This entry would come to be Mark Wollner’s final journal Entry.
24th May 2015 So, as always, I will start by saying cancer sucks! There, got that off my chest. I am not sure how to write this journal . . . Life takes many different turns as we travel our endless highway. Cancer is a battle that is non-stop for as long as you have the attitude and will to carry on. Sometimes, we cancer fighters just lose all hope and we call it a day. Sometimes, we do not have a choice and God decides for us. My fight started in 2006 and by the grace of God, it continues today. I will tell you first hand there was no way I could have pulled any of this off if it wasn’t for Dr. Greeff and the loving and devoted care the nurses gave me. They are my angels who carried me through a lot of emotional needs, ungodly pain, and messy situations that challenged me mentally almost every day. Five months in a hospital bed without eating a thing, staring out a window and not knowing what tomorrow will bring is a mental challenge for survival.
We will take one day at a time and one challenge at a time and make it work.
Ask me why I fight so hard and I will tell you the same: I cannot imagine myself not being at Katrin’s side holding her hand. I am so proud of my son Jack for finally making a solid choice in life – a student studying marine mechanics who has high scores on every test and has a future mapped for himself. I will fight my fight so he can have me cheering him on. I am home now; my most loving wife gave me a deadline early April that I am going home and that is that. My time at CTCA was up and we all geared up for my departure. My set back now is medical insurance. After nine years of fighting cancer, my health insurance was cancelled. Their reason was that I exceeded my life time limit. No US based carrier will pick me up because my past health care was not a US company. I am being denied here outside the US because of my preexisting condition. We will do what Katrin and I always do. We will take one day at a time and one challenge at a time and make it work. We have my second round of Yondelis chemotherapy paid for and ordered. In the next week, we need to place the order for my third round. We are not there yet, but we will get it done. One obstacle, one challenge, and one day at a time. Thank you one and all for your support. It means a lot in my fight.
