Educational Experiences for Youth Youth Matinee Series Parents and educators know that helping a student develop creativity and imagination is one of the most important things they can do. Helping to complete the education formula, our Youth Matinee Series energizes, engages and enhances the overall learning process for students through the magic and wonder of live performing arts produced by professional touring artists. These performances enrich students’ lives and illustrate the dynamic relationship between literature, social studies, history, science, math, world cultures and the performing arts. The Youth Matinee Series is underwritten by the Martha-Ellen Tye Performing Arts Institute endowment.

Martha-Ellen Tye Performing Arts Institute The Martha-Ellen Tye Performing Arts Institute was established through a generous endowment by long-time Marshalltown resident, the late Martha-Ellen Tye. It brings a unique blend of arts experiences to students of all ages through matinee performances, teaching activities in schools, demonstrations and workshops. Now in its 16th year, the program has served more than 200,000 students in grades PreK-12 from across the state of Iowa. Mrs. Tye believed strongly in the power and importance of arts education and vigorously supported programs that develop the “whole person — body, mind and spirit.” The Youth Matinee Series is underwritten by this endowment, which allows us to keep the price at $4.

CIRK LA PUTYKA & CIRCO AEREO:

SLAPSTICK SONATA A darkened warehouse in Prague. The night shift goes through the motions of another tedious overnight. But all is not what it seems. Slowly, this group of late night laborers breaks out of their mundane routine, shedding their drab existence for a vibrant and glorious explosion of color, humor, movement, silliness, and physical theater. Scratch the surface—who knows what we’ll find? See what happens overnight and join the thousands who have cheered as these characters find joy in the most unlikely of places. Set to the music of Mozart, Handel, Shostakovich and others, Slapstick Sonata is an absurd yet poetic theater piece without text or words. Visual poetry meets physical comedy with a dash of contemporary circus… and the nightshift will never be the same! Prague’s Cirk La Putyka is one of Europe’s most pioneering physical theater companies, bringing together a multi-talented cast of dancers, actors, mimes, and comediennes. They have toured throughout Eastern Europe as well as France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and Australia. Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes (no intermission)

About Cirk La Putyka Established in 2009, Cirk La Putyka’s mission is to transcend the lines between acrobatics, modern dance, puppetry, concert and sports. The group strives to create their own specific theatre poetics and find a perspective on the genre as a whole. For Cirk La Putyka, the theme, the story and the message are as important as the professional approach to individual theatre genres and circus disciplines. The ensemble has twenty members including actors, musicians, acrobats, puppeteers and dancers. All members are top professionals in their chosen disciplines who are able to crossover into several other areas, as well. More information: www.laputyka.cz

Artistic exploration in all aspects of the performance and the collective input of the entire artistic workgroup characterize Circo Aereo’s projects. The willingness to broaden the circus as a performing art and the desire to reform its language and forms of expression bring the creative processes of Circo Aereo’s works into interaction with other art forms. Working in the fields of circus, object and movement theatre, dance and music, the group has been invited to perform at multiple circus, dance, music and theatre festivals. Produced with a human touch and on a human scale, its performances aim to get close to the audience and their emotions. Born in Ireland, the capital of song, famed Irish tenor Michael Londra and his band, Celtic Fire, has journeyed around the world. From humble beginnings and bathed in Ireland’s traditional culture of song and dance, this show has been seen in every corner of the planet. Producer, director and the show’s vocalist, Michael Londra is a driving force in Irish arts worldwide and is described as “one of the greatest Irish singers of our time” by Capital Celtic. Ireland’s President Michael D Higgins has described Londra’s contribution to Irish arts as invaluable. As lead voice of Riverdance on Broadway and as a recording artist performing worldwide, Michael’s tenor voice has played the world’s biggest stages from Madison Square Garden to Radio City Music Hall and from the Kremlin Palace in Moscow to the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. His recording of “The Water is Wide” is featured on the Universal Records release Arias with Andrea Bocelli, Pavarotti and Il Divo. His version of “Danny Boy” has been viewed by 8 million people on YouTube. Featuring some of tonight’s cast, Michael taped his first PBS special Beyond Celtic in March 2011. The special has aired over 400 times nationwide and received two Emmy® nominations. Michael is an ambassador for Concern Worldwide having advocated for their programs in Haiti for the past five years. A film of his last trip can be seen on his Beyond Celtic DVD or by going to his website www.michaellondra.com In 2015, Michael partnered as a producer with Steve Peters, CEO of VenuWorks, to form VenuWorks Theatricals which produces musical theater and entertainment for touring globally. Their first production, NOËL, premiered in the National Opera House of Ireland in December 2016 to great acclaim. The show, written by worldwide bestselling children’s author Eoin Colfer (Artemis Fowl) and Irish movie composer Liam Bates, will tour North America in 2018. Michael Londra was named a Wexford Ambassador in 2013 along with X Factor host Dermot O’Leary, authors Eoin Colfer and Colm Toibin, and international soccer player Kevin Doyle. Together, they are working with their home country to encourage people to visit the sunny southeast of Ireland. For information on Wexford, go to www.visitwexford.ie Michael’s annual trip to Ireland for fans and people new to his music is hugely popular with crowds returning year after year. With 100% live music, dance and song, while respecting its culture and ancient history, the show generates an electric atmosphere that sweeps audiences away to Ireland, its culture, its land, its pubs, its music and its heart. From a tiny spark, Celtic Fire now travels the world. The music is traditional at its core. All of Ireland’s national instruments – the fiddle driving frenetic reels, the great drum and the bodhran beating out the rhythms of the band, and the plaintive uileann pipes calling back to days of yore with hauntingly beautiful slow airs – are featured in the show. All our dancers have performed in many International Irish dance championships in the US and globally with some having danced in Michael’s Emmy®-nominated PBS special, Beyond Celtic. Choreographer Claire Worley has worked with Michael for over ten years and was featured in the Celtic Legends show which toured over 20 countries including stops in Russia’s Kremlin Palace, Australia’s Sydney Opera House and Tahiti (that was quite the gig!). For Celtic Fire, Claire wanted to create a more essential, vital and exciting style of Irish dance for US audiences. She choreographed traditional pieces that merge perfectly with the live on stage sound of the band. The intricate group numbers are complimented by looser solos that are the hit of the show. Irish dance has enjoyed a spectacular revival in recent years with shows like Riverdance. Celtic Fire doesn’t rehash the art form, but strips it to its bare essentials. By presenting traditional dance, the show has a vital feel with cast members being creative and dynamic. Audiences are engaged and everyone leaves the show with the feeling they have been involved and have an insight into what Ireland is as a country. Irish music and dance have learned to mix with other cultures to create new and innovative dances and sounds, but at its core, this is what Ireland is all about. It is the real thing! Musical Director Mellad Abeid has worked with Michael for several years as musical director of his solo concerts and is now working on the new music for tonight’s performance. His own band, An Dochas, is widely recognized as one of the most innovative Irish bands in North America. The show is fun, relaxed and most importantly, LIVE. The program varies from town to town but you are guaranteed reels, jigs, slow airs, gorgeous songs to break your heart and solo dance routines to make you want to get up and have a go yourself. You will also learn a little Gaelic in this performance of pure Celtic magic. Michael Londra . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Vocals and much nonsense! A Message from Michael I have spent most of my life wandering the world, sharing my songs and stories with the world. I have been blessed. It has given me a great life. I now find myself in a new home living in Ames, Iowa. The people of this lovely state and in particular the people of Ames, have made me feel welcome. Indeed, I now feel like I am somewhat “Iowish”. I still travel the world but it is nice to know that I can come home to a place that is as welcoming and as warm as Ireland. Tonight, I want to thank you for that welcome.
