Educational Experiences for Youth Youth Matinee Series Parents and educators know that helping a student develop creativity and imagination is one of the most important things they can do. Helping to complete the education formula, our Youth Matinee Series energizes, engages and enhances the overall learning process for students through the magic and wonder of live performing arts produced by professional touring artists. These performances enrich students’ lives and illustrate the dynamic relationship between literature, social studies, history, science, math, world cultures and the performing arts. The Youth Matinee Series is underwritten by the Martha-Ellen Tye Performing Arts Institute endowment.

Martha-Ellen Tye Performing Arts Institute The Martha-Ellen Tye Performing Arts Institute was established through a generous endowment by long-time Marshalltown resident, the late Martha-Ellen Tye. It brings a unique blend of arts experiences to students of all ages through matinee performances, teaching activities in schools, demonstrations and workshops. Now in its 16th year, the program has served more than 200,000 students in grades PreK-12 from across the state of Iowa. Mrs. Tye believed strongly in the power and importance of arts education and vigorously supported programs that develop the “whole person — body, mind and spirit.” The Youth Matinee Series is underwritten by this endowment, which allows us to keep the price at $4.

Standing OVATION 2016–2017 SEASON

Lisa Rock (Lead vocals/writer) has been performing this show nationally in over 33 states for the past seven years to sold-out crowds. She’s written more than 25 original concerts and cabarets that have been seen across the country. Now, Rock has arranged a six-piece band, complete with back-up singers, and together they are dedicated to creating a Carpenters experience like no other. Rock’s amazing four octave range allows her to sing the hits like “We’ve Only Just Begun” and “Rainy Days and Mondays” in their original key, keeping the songs genuine and more recognizable for the audience. “When she hits the lower range of her marvelous voice,” notes critic Alan Bresloff, “if you close your eyes, you can see Karen Carpenter’s face.” Theodore Berry IV (bass guitar) discovered the electric bass in his freshman year at Columbia College Chicago, while pursuing and attaining his BA in Audio Arts & Acoustics with a concentration in Live Sound Reinforcement. He has performed internationally and nationally in different genres. From country to reggae, he doesn’t discriminate. He loves music! His job outside of being a musician is in the audio engineering world whether it’s corporate AV or live bands. So far, the best part of his journey is being able to play bass for the love of his world, Krystal Metcalfe, in her band! When he is not playing or running sound, his hobbies include reading, reading… and reading. Robert Dietz (backing vocals/keyboard) is a pianist, singer and music director. Recent Chicagoland credits include conductor/keyboard at the Mercury Theatre, Elgin Community College, and Jedlicka

Performing Arts Center. Bobby teaches piano and has always been an avid Carpenters fan. Eric Engelson (drums) is a self-taught musician. Eric has been drumming since the age of three and turned his passion into his profession five years ago. Though his home is typically that seedy underbelly of the Chicago theater community known as the musicians’ pit, you can occasionally see Eric with Alien Queen or as a sub musician for Million Dollar Quartet. Eric has been fortunate to work on productions with Chicago Childrens’ Theater, House Theater, Stage Door Fine Arts, Bailiwick Theater, Studio BE, Circle Theater, Strawdog Theater, Columbia College, The New Colony and, of course, Redmoon. Sari Greenberg (backing vocals/rhythm instruments) is a singer, songwriter and actor whose past roles include Young Frankenstein (Elizabeth), Ring of Fire (June Carter) and the national tour of Bad Romance where she played Lady Gaga (luckily without the meat dress). Sari performed in the concert, “If It Wasn’t For the Irish and the Jews” at Chicago’s Symphony Center with actor Martin Sheen. She continues to tour in the original musical, Moishe Oysher. Sari can also be seen and heard in numerous voiceover and television commercials. Sari is a super fan of Lisa Rock and is ecstatic and grateful to share the stage with all this talent in this spectacular concert. Ian Letts (Reeds) is an up-and-coming saxophonist in the Chicago area. Having recently graduated from Northern Illinois University with degrees in Jazz Performance and Music

Standing OVATION 2016–2017 SEASON

Education, Ian has had the privilege of studying with saxophone professors Stephen Duke, Rich Moore and Geof Bradfield, as well as other jazz faculty members including Ron Carter, Art Davis, Kelly Sill, Fareed Haque, Willie Pickens, Tom Garling, and Rodrigo Villanueva. While attending Northern Illinois University, Ian performed in the NIU Jazz Ensemble for two years. Through affiliation with the NIU Jazz Ensemble, Ian has had the fortune to perform with high caliber jazz artists such as Randy Brecker, Ernie Watts, Victor Lewis, Wycliffe Gordon, Steve Davis, Brian Lynch, Paquito D’Rivera, and Terrell Stafford. Ian is currently a member of CRISP, the Pete Ellman Big Band, and the Jose Valdez Mambo All-Stars.

Rachel Page (piano/music director) is a performer, pianist and voice teacher. She has performed and taught all over the country. Rachel has been a part of Second City Touring Company (including two contracts on Norwegian Cruise Line), Underscore Theatre, Windy City Music Theatre, Lifeline Theatre, and Fox Valley Repertory Theatre, to name a few. Rachel is also part of the cabaret duo Side By Side. When not on stage, she can be found on her piano bench, telling her students not to work so hard and to stop breathing so much. rachelpagesings.com

Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Singing For Peace Around The World In 2014 Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the South African a cappella group formed by Joseph Shabalala during the 1960’s, was awarded their fourth Grammy Award for the CD Singing for Peace Around the World. Not just a CD title but a statement of the group’s career mission. It was Nelson Mandela who designated Ladysmith Black Mambazo “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the world.” It’s a title Ladysmith Black Mambazo holds quite dearly to their hearts. Nelson Mandela passed away in 2013 and the group dedicated the Grammy Award to him. They have been celebrating Mandela’s message of peace at every concert they perform. Ladysmith Black Mambazo returns to the USA in 2017 for their annual celebration of South African culture and history. They will sing songs of peace, love & harmony to the world as they have since their very beginnings. Ladysmith Black Mambazo was founded in the early 1960s by Joseph Shabalala, then a young farm boy turned factory worker. Ladysmith is the name of Joseph’s hometown, a small farming area between Durban and Johannesburg; Black being a reference to the oxen, the strongest of all farm animals; and Mambazo, the Zulu

word for chopping axe, a symbol of the group’s ability to “chop down” any singing rival who might challenge them. Their ability won so many awards that by the end of the 1960’s they were banned from competitions, although they were welcomed to participate as entertainers. A radio broadcast in 1970 opened the door to their first record contract – the beginning of an ambitious discography that currently includes more than fifty recordings, fifteen Grammy Award nominations and those four Grammy Award statues. They are currently recording a follow up CD to the recent Grammy winner, titled Songs of Peace & Love for Kids & Parents Around the World. It is very important to the group that their message of peace be passed from generation to generation. By recording songs of peace that parents can teach their children, the group hopes to continue the message for decades to come. Their philosophy in the studio is as much about preservation of musical heritage as it is about entertainment. Apartheid, the South African social system forced upon the country’s black majority to keep the white minority government in power, was a dividing force in many

ways. The musicians and artists of South Africa took two paths of resistance. Some sang songs with powerful messages of revolution against the horrors of apartheid. Others, like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, followed a path of peaceful protest. Joseph Shabalala, following the ways of protest that Martin Luther King Jr. used in the USA, wrote songs of hope and a better tomorrow. When Nelson Mandela was released from prison, in 1990, he named Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s singing as one of the powerful messages of peace he listened to while in jail. In fact, when Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 he brought Ladysmith Black Mambazo with him to Oslo, Norway to receive his award. The group sings a form of traditional music called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-ME-Ya), which developed in the mines of South Africa, where black workers were taken by rail to work far away from their homes and their families. Poorly housed and paid worse, the mine workers would entertain themselves after a six-day week by singing songs into the wee hours on Sunday morning. When the miners returned to the homelands, this musical tradition returned with them. During the 1970s Ladysmith Black Mambazo established themselves as the most successful singing group in South Africa. In the mid-1980s, Paul Simon

DON’T MISS OUT!

visited South Africa and incorporated the group’s rich tenor/alto/bass harmonies into his famous Graceland album – a landmark recording that was considered seminal in introducing world music to mainstream audiences. In addition to their work with Paul Simon, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has recorded with numerous artists, including Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Sarah McLachlan, Josh Groban, Emmylou Harris, Melissa Etheridge, and many others. They have provided film soundtrack singing for Disney’s The Lion King, Part II as well as Eddie Murphy’s Coming to America, Marlon Brando’s A Dry White Season, James Earl Jones’ Cry the Beloved Country and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. A film documentary titled On Tip Toe: Gentle Steps to Freedom, the Story of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, was nominated for an Academy Award. They have even appeared on Broadway where they were nominated for a Tony Award. Ladysmith Black Mambazo carries a message of peace, love and harmony as they travel the world year after year. They bring this message, in song and dance, to every theater they perform in. We hope you will join them as they sing their message. See more at: http://www.mambazo.com
