Knokke Hippique organisator Stephan Conter speelde al langer met het idee om de landenprijs terug naar België te halen: ‘ik ben altijd voorstander geweest van de landencompetitie. Het blijft één van de mooiste wedstrijden, voor de ruiters en het publiek. Echter, de Nations Cups verloren aan belang en waarde. Het is jaren het vlaggenschip geweest van de FEI, maar ze hebben hun concept verwaarloosd door te weinig prijzengeld. Iedereen betreurt die evolutie. Dat zie je aan de voornaamste organisaties van landenwedstrijden die steeds meer in zee gaan met Rolex. Zodanig dat de vooraanstaande landenwedstrijden vandaag onder de vlag van Rolex georganiseerd worden. Denk aan Aken, Calgary, Rome, La Baule. En daar komt nu Knokke Hippique bij. Onze events, Knokke Hippique en Brussels Stephex Masters werken al jaren samen met Rolex. Toen we de kans kregen om onze CSI om te vormen tot een CSIO, hebben we geen seconde getwijfeld. Het zou een duidelijk signaal moeten zijn naar de FEI, al valt dat in dovenmansoren. Hun landenprijzen devalueren, wij willen ze met Rolex opwaarderen want het blijven aantrekkelijke wedstrijden. Rolex trekt duidelijk de kaart van de sport en daar gaan wij graag in mee’, aldus Stephan Conter.

CSI 5*Knokke Hippique will become CSIO 5* CSI 5* Knokke Hippique will become CSIO 5*. With Knokke Hippique, Belgium will have yet another Nations Cup. For the last Nations Cup, we need to go back to 2017. For quite some time, Stephan Conter, organiser of Knokke Hippique, has been playing with the idea of bringing back the Nations Cup to Belgium: “I have always been a supporter of the Nations Cup. To me, and to the riders and the audience, this is one of the best competitions. Sadly, the Nations Cup shows have lost importance and value. For many years, it had been the FEI flagship, but they neglected the concept by offering too little prize money. Everyone regrets this development. This is reflected by the fact that the main organisers of the Nations Cup competitions are increasingly partnering with Rolex. To such an extent that the leading Nations Cups are nowadays organised under the flag of Rolex. Think of Aachen, Calgary, Rome, La Baule. And now Knokke Hippique will join this club. For many years, our events, Knokke Hippique and Brussels Stephex Masters, have been cooperating with Rolex. When we were given the chance to change our CSI to CSIO status, we did not hesitate for a second. It should be a clear signal to the FEI, but the International Equestrian Federation seems to close their eyes to it. Their Nations Cup devaluates, whereas we want to upgrade it with Rolex, because this type of competition remains attractive. Clearly, Rolex draws the sports’ card and we are happy to go along with that,” says Stephan Conter.

Waarom Knokke Hippique de landenprijs organiseert?

‘Dit moesten we doen voor de sport en voor België’ ‘Ik ben nu eenmaal een grote fan van landenwedstrijden, we hadden er geen meer in België en ik vond dat we dat moesten doen voor de sport en voor België.’ Zo kort en bondig klinkt de motivatie van Stephan Conter, CEO van de Stephex Group en organisator van CSI, nu CSIO Knokke Hippique: ‘Landenwedstrijden blijven de mooiste proeven in onze sport en het wakkert het chauvinisme aan. Vergelijk het met een EK of WK in het voetbal. Ik volg het voetbal niet op de voet, maar als de Rode Duivels een kampioenschap spelen, zit ik op het puntje van mijn stoel en word ik een hevige supporter. Bij een landenwedstrijd is het voor de paardenliefhebbers niet anders. Dus ja, ik ben fan van het eerst uur en de CSIO status zat al een tijdje in mijn achterhoofd. Knokke Hippique bestaat nu 7 jaar en die tijd hadden we nodig om onze organisatie voor te bereiden op deze CSIO. De laatste Belgische landenprijs werd 5 jaar geleden gesprongen in Lummen. Sindsdien kregen we vaak de vraag van ruiters en de federatie om de Belgische Nations Cup te organiseren. Ze hadden niet veel nodig om mij te overtuigen.’ Alles kan altijd beter. Het zou een slogan van de Stephex Group kunnen zijn. Of het wapenschild van Stephan Conter, die in een vorig leven een kruising moet geweest zijn van een Brabants trekpaard en een volbloed renpaard: een onverwoestbaar werkpaard dat simultaan ook de snelste, de eerste en de beste wil zijn. En wie in zijn span meerijdt, moet uit hetzelfde hout gesneden zijn. Het zou ook kunnen dat Conter in een vorig leven een ontdekkingsreiziger was met een hoog pioniersgehalte. Steeds op zoek naar nieuwe markten, bruisend van ideeën en initiatieven. Zo wordt dit jaar de Brussels Stephex Masters georganiseerd op een nieuwe site met een nieuwe graspiste. Maar eerst is er de vijfsterren CSIO Knokke Hippique.

De noodzakelijke upgrade van de landenwedstrijd Stephan Conter doet het voor de sport, al is er meer. Met CSIO Knokke Hippique wil hij de landencompetitie opwaarderen. En dat is nodig, oordeelt Conter: ‘de landencompetitie was ooit het vlaggenschip van de internationale ruitersportfederatie FEI. Helaas hebben zij hun geesteskindje verwaarloosd, zodanig dat het nu verweesd achterblijft. Er kwamen lucratieve alternatieven met een devaluatie van de CSIO’s tot gevolg. De FEI heeft de aansluiting met de actuele sport gemist. Ze heeft nooit een antwoord gevonden op de evolutie van onze sport. Onverantwoord en onbegrijpelijk en ik gis en vis nog altijd naar de reden. Het blijft onverklaarbaar, maar als de FEI het niet doet, doen wij het zelf. Wij, en samen met ons alle ruiters, vinden het nog wel de moeite.’ Het prijzengeld is een onmiskenbare factor geworden in de paardensport. Vandaag verdienen de paarden hun haver in de sport. Als ze echter moeten overleven bij de gratie van de FEI landenprijzen, eten ze enkel nog droog brood en dat is één van de redenen waarom de landencompetitie minder aantrekkelijk geworden is.

Erkenning Dat de paarden vandaag een vijfgangen menu voorgeschoteld krijgen, is mede te danken aan Rolex, dat partnerships aangaat met ‘s werelds beste vijfsterren wedstrijden. ‘Dat is hun filosofie’, licht Stephan Conter toe: ‘Rolex legt de lat heel hoog en profileert zich in de sport als partner van de hoogst gewaardeerde wedstrijden, zoals de Grand Slams in het tennis of de Formule1 in de autosport. En dat is in onze sport niet anders. Rolex gaat per definitie in zee met de strafste, sterkste en beste competitie. Denk aan CSIO Aken en Calgary, CSI Geneve en s’ Hertogenbosch. Ik ben dus heel dankbaar dat onze events in Knokke en Brussel een partnership kunnen en mogen aangaan met Rolex. Als organisator is het de hoogst denkbare erkenning die je kan krijgen. Als ruiter en paard krijg je de garantie dat je terechtkomt in de best mogelijke setting, waar sport en welfare of the horse van primordiaal belang zijn.’ De voorbije jaren heeft de Zwitserse horlogemaker zijn invloed in de paardensport uitgebreid met een tiental zorgvuldig uitgekozen wedstrijden. ‘Steeds meer ruiters verkiezen openlijk Rolex concours. Enerzijds is er nergens anders meer prijzengeld te winnen, anderzijds staat een Rolex wedstrijd voor niks minder dan de absolute topsport en dat krijgt het respect van de ruiters.’ Stephan is zakenman en sportman: ‘Onze business draait dankzij de sport, het is dan ook fair om iets terug te geven aan de sport. Ik ben liefhebber van de Nations Cup, dat is de enige valabele reden waarom we dit organiseren. Ook al gaat ons dit geld kosten, ik doe het voor de sport. Als we geen aantrekkelijke wedstrijden meer hebben, valt de sport stil en dat wil niemand want dan valt ons businessmodel in elkaar. Knokke Hippique is een gevestigde waarde, al ligt het niet in mijn aard om op mijn lauweren te rusten. Alles kan altijd beter en daar werken we elke dag met alles medewerkers van de Stephex Group heel hard aan. Het is met onze organisaties niet anders.’

CSIO selecties De selectie voor CSIO Knokke Hippique wordt gemaakt door de bondscoaches en Stephan Conter is ervan overtuigd dat zij hun sterkste teams afvaardigen naar de Belgische landenprijs. In zijn Stephex stal zitten met Daniel Deusser, Kendra Claricia Brinkop en Petronella Andersson ruiters uit Duitsland en Zweden, die ook in de Belgische landenprijs aantreden. ‘Natuurlijk zou ik mijn ruiters graag in hun respectievelijke teams zien rijden, al ben ik vandaag even nieuwsgierig als zij. Daar heb ik als organisator geen invloed op. Wat ik wel al weet is dat mijn dochters Zoé en Emilie uit de boot vallen voor team Belgium. Omdat er vandaag nu eenmaal betere combinaties zijn. Hopelijk worden ze ooit gevraagd voor het team, maar dat is een plaats die ze moeten verdienen. Als organisator van een Rolex concours kijk ik enkel en uitsluitend naar de sport en die maatstaf geldt als enig criterium.’

Jaarlijkse groei van 20% Ondertussen puilt de wedstrijdkalender uit van (vijf)sterrenconcours. De paardensport kent de voorbije jaren een exponentiële groei en dat is een goede evolutie, vindt Conter: ‘omdat vraag en aanbod in evenwicht zijn. De groei van de wedstrijden verloopt recht evenredig met het toenemend aantal vijfsterren ruiters. Er is plaats voor iedereen en daarbij stellen we op het terrein vast dat Rolex wedstrijden het meest gegeerd zijn bij de ruiters. Het is een objectieve vaststelling dat de voorbije 10 jaar de paardensport gegroeid is a rato van 20% per jaar. En ik zie nog geen einde aan die groei. Die trend zie je in alle geledingen: bij de fokkerij, de veilingen, de sport, het aantal ruiters en wedstrijden. En dat komt omdat onze sport een familieaangelegenheid is. Kijk naar onze basissport, waar alles begint. Daar zie je dat de ganse familie erbij betrokken is. Op LRV toernooien spelen

de kleinsten op een springkasteel en kaarten de ouders ’s avonds uitgebreid na tussen pot en pint. Iedereen geniet op zijn manier en zijn niveau. In de ring is er strijd en concurrentie, na de prijsuitreiking volgt de grote verbroedering. Dat is de basis van onze sport en werkt heel aanstekelijk. Paardrijden doe je nooit alleen en beperkt zich niet tot een uurtje per week. Mensen met paarden leven voor hun paarden, ze houden je 24/7 bezig. Dat onvoorwaardelijk engagement heet passie. Je mag evenmin de dankbare educatieve impact vergeten van een paard op een kind en een tiener. Een paard leert je alles over verantwoordelijkheid en discipline, respect en vertrouwen. Zonder die waarden boek je geen resultaten en paarden geven dat spelenderwijs mee. En eens je gebeten bent is het paardenvirus besmettelijker dat corona. Dat is een universeel gegeven.’

Toegankelijk voor iedereen ‘Wat we nooit voldoende kunnen onderstrepen, is dat onze sport toegankelijk is voor iedereen. Kijk naar de paarden van onze jongens die vorig jaar brons wonnen op de Olympische Spelen en het EK. In de twee bronzen teams zat geen enkel paard dat duur is aangekocht. Onze ruiters hebben ze op jonge leeftijd ontdekt en gemaakt tot kampioenen. Niet met geld, maar met hard werk en tomeloze inzet en toewijding. Enkel met die attitude kan je het maken in de sport.’

Why is Knokke Hippique organising the Nations Cup?

‘We have to do this for the sport and for Belgium’

“As it is, I am a big fan of the Nations Cup, and there was none being organised in Belgium. I thought we had to do this for the sport and for Belgium.” Short and concise, that is the motivation of Stephan Conter, CEO of the Stephex Group and organiser of Knokke Hippique, which has recently been upgraded from CSI to CSIO. “The Nations Cups are the best tests in our sport and they encourage chauvinism. You can compare them with a European or World Football Championship. I do not follow football closely, but when the Red Devils play for a championship, I sit on the edge of my seat and become a fierce supporter. For horse lovers that is no different when they watch a Nations Cup. So yes, I have been a fan from the very beginning and I have had the CSIO status in the back of my mind for a while. Knokke Hippique has meanwhile existed for seven years and we needed that time to prepare our organisation for this CSIO upgrade. The last Belgian Nations Cup

was organised 5 years ago in Lummen. Ever since we have regularly received the question from riders and the federation to organise the Belgian Nations Cup. It did not require much to convince me.” Everything can always be improved. This could be a catchphrase from the Stephex Group. Or the coat of arms of Stephan Conter, who must have been a cross between a Belgium Draft and a Thoroughbred in a previous life: an unbreakable workhorse that also wants to be the fastest, the first, and the best at the same time. And who rides in his team, must be made of the same material. In a past life, Conter might also have been an explorer with a real pioneer’s spirit. Continuously on the look-out for new markets, brimming with ideas and initiatives. This year, for example, Brussels Stephex Masters will be organised at a different location with a new grass arena. But first there will be the five-star CSIO Knokke Hippique.

The necessary upgrade of the Nations Cup Stephan Conter does it for the sport, even though there is more to it. With the CSIO Knokke Hippique he wishes to upgrade the Nations Cup. And that is essential, according to Conter: “Some time ago, the Nations Cup was the flagship of the International Equestrian Federation FEI. Sadly, they have neglected their brainchild, to an extent that it is has now been left orphaned. Lucrative alternatives came about which resulted in a devaluation of the CSIOs. The FEI is missing out on the connection with the modern sport. The organisation has never found an answer to the evolution of our sport. Irresponsible and incomprehensible and I am still guessing and searching for the reason. It remains unexplainable, but if the FEI does not take action, then we will do it ourselves. We - and with us the riders - consider it worth the work.” In the equestrian sports, prize money has become an undeniable factor. These days horses earn their oats with sports. However, if they have to survive from what the FEI Nations Cup has to offer, they will not get a lot to eat and that is one of the reasons that the Nations Cup has lost its appeal.

Recognition These days, the horses are offered a five-course menu, partly thanks to Rolex that partners with the world’s best five-star competitions. “That is their philosophy,” explains Stephan Conter: “Rolex sets the bar very high and profiles itself in sports as a partner of the highest-rated competitions, such as the Grand Slams in tennis or Formula 1 in motor racing. And that is no different in our sport. By definition, Rolex engages with the toughest, strongest, and best competition, such as CSIO Aachen and Calgary, and CSI Geneva and ‘s Hertogenbosch. So I am very grateful that our events in Knokke and Brussels were allowed and can join forces with Rolex. For an organisation it is the highest possible acknowledgement that you can receive. Riders and horses are guaranteed the best possible setting, where sport and welfare of the horse are paramount.” In recent years, the Swiss watchmaker has extended its influence in the equestrian sports with 10 carefully selected shows. “Ever more riders openly choose the Rolex

shows. On the one hand, nowhere else more prize money can be won, on the other hand, a Rolex show is nothing less than absolute top sport and that is what earns the respect of the riders.” Stephan is both a businessman and a sportsman: “Our business operates thanks to the sport, so it is only fair to give something back. I am a fan of the Nations Cup and that is the only valid reason why we are organising this. Even if this will cost us money, we will do this for the the sport. If Belgium does not host attractive shows, the sport will come to a standstill. And that is something nobody wants, because then our business model falls apart. Knokke Hippique is an established name, although it is not in my nature to rest on my laurels. Everything can always be improved, and together with all the employees of the Stephex Group, we work on that every day. It is no different within our organisations.”

CSIO selections The selection for CSIO Knokke Hippique is made by the national coaches and Stephan Conter is convinced that they will send their strongest teams to the Belgian Nations Cup. Daniel Deusser and Kendra Claricia Brinkop from Germany, and Petronella Andersson from Sweden, who all three work for his Stephex Stables, will ride for their respective countries in the Belgian Nations Cup. “It goes without saying that I would love to see my riders ride for their respective teams, but today I am as curious as they are. As an organiser, I have no say in that. What I do already know is that my daughters Zoé and Emilie will not be selected for Team Belgium. Simply because we have better combinations at this moment. I hope that one day they will be asked for the team, but that is something they will have to earn. As the organiser of a Rolex show, I only look at the sport and that is the only criterion”.

Annual growth of 20% Meanwhile, the competition calendar is overflowing with (five-) star competitions. Equestrian sports have experienced exponential growth in recent years and that is a good trend, according to Conter, because “demand and supply are in equilibrium. The growth of competitions is developing in direct proportion to the increasing number of five-star riders. There are opportunities for everyone and on the ground, we can conclude that the Rolex competitions are the most popular among the riders. It is an objective conclusion that in the past decade the equestrian sports have grown at a ratio of 20% per year. And I do not see an end to this growth yet. The development can be observed in all related areas: in breeding, in auctions, in sport,

in the number of riders, and in competitions. The reason for this is that our sport is a family affair. Look at the basic sports, where everything starts. You will see how the entire family is involved. At the competitions of the Flemish Federation, the smallest kids are happily playing at a bouncy castle and after dinner, the parents will play cards. Everybody can enjoy the show in their own way and at their own level. In the arena there is fierce competition, after the prize-giving ceremony, everybody gets together to celebrate and have fun. That is the basis of our sport and it is really contagious. Horse-riding is never done alone and is not limited to an hour a week. Horsey people live for their horses that keep them occupied 24/7. This unconditional engagement is called ´passion´. Neither should you forget about the educational effect of a horse on a child or a teenager. A horse will teach them everything about responsibility and discipline, respect and trust. Without those values, you will not be successful in life and when working with horses, children are taught this lesson without efforts. Once horses have gained their place in the family, they will most likely be there for ever. That is a universal fact”.

Accessible to everyone “The thing we cannot emphasise enough is that our sport is accessible to everyone. Look at the horses of our riders who won Team Bronze last year at the Olympics and the European Championships. None of the horses from those two bronze teams were purchased for a lot of money. Our riders discovered them at a young age and turned them into champions. Not with money, but with hard work and unbridled dedication. And only with that attitude can you climb high in our sport.”

Jérôme Guery over Quel Homme de Hus, laatste winnaar van de Knokke Hippique Rolex GP

‘Een paard dat dromen laat uitkomen is het mooiste wat je kan overkomen’ Rewind naar juni 2021. Jérôme Guery en Quel Homme de Hus worden geselecteerd voor de Olympische Spelen in Tokio. Het is geen verrassing, eerder een bevestiging na hun gouden medaille op het EK. Knokke Hippique geldt als generale repetitie voor de Olympische Spelen. Met maar liefst 7 ruiters uit de top 10 van de wereld is de Rolex GP presented by Audi een voorproefje van Tokio. Daniel Deusser, Steve Guerdat, Martin Fuchs, Scott Brash, allemaal rijden en strijden ze voor de overwinning in de Rolex GP, maar het is Jérôme Guery die aan het langste eind trekt. Voor de tweede keer. In 2015 was Jérôme de eerste winnaar van Knokke Hippique. Maar dacht hij ditmaal net voor de barrage niet aan zijn belangrijke afspraak in Tokio? ‘Vooraf wel, maar eens je in de piste bent, denk je aan de barrage en wil je die Audi winnen en Quel Homme was in vorm’, lacht Guery. Dat bleek inderdaad enkele weken later wanneer hij Olympisch brons won.

Geboren in Duitsland, getogen in Frankrijk Quel Homme werd 16 jaar geleden geboren in Duitsland uit een Candil-

lo moeder met Quidam de Revel als vader. Xavier Marie van Haras de Hus kocht Quel Homme, Gilles Botton ontfermde zicht over zijn opleiding. Op zijn 7 jaar werd Quel Homme verkocht aan Gaetan Decroix. Echter, in januari 2019 kreeg hij de diagnose van kanker en vroeg hij zijn goede vriend Jérôme Guery om enkele paarden over te nemen, waaronder Quel Homme de Hus.

Ik ben een fatalist. Wat moet gebeuren, zal gebeuren en daar heb je geen invloed op” Guery vertelt het met fonkelende pretoogjes: ‘ik ben een fatalist. Wat moet gebeuren, zal gebeuren en daar heb je geen invloed op. Zo is ook Quel Homme de Hus in mijn leven gekomen. Soms vallen alle puzzelstukjes in elkaar en dat kan je zelf niet bedenken noch organiseren.’

Niet onder de indruk Jérôme zag Quel Homme de Hus voor het eerst bij Gaetan Decroix: ‘een jong paard waarvan niemand kon inschatten hoe ver hij zou springen. Ja, hij toonde veel vermogen, maar hij toonde ook een speciale techniek. Ik begeleidde Gaetan en Quel Homme eerder sporadisch en gaf hier en daar enkele tips. Wanneer hij 1.40m sprong, was ik niet onder de indruk. Dat veranderde wanneer Quel Homme 1.50m sprong. Dan pas kwam hij tot zijn recht en toonde hij wat hij in zijn mars had. Alleen, voor Gaetan was het niet evident om toegang te krijgen tot vijfsterren wedstrijden. In combinatie met zijn diagnose van kanker, vroeg hij of ik Quel Homme wilde rijden en

commercialiseren. Dat was het initieel plan, ik zou Quel Homme in de etalage zetten en verkopen. En eerlijk, tijdens onze eerste parcours had ik niet het gevoel dat Quel Homme mijn super star zou worden.’

Drie jaar geleden dacht ik met Quel Homme al aan een Olympische medaille… ‘Ik had de Olympische Spelen van Rio de Janeiro gereden en dat was zo’n onvergetelijke ervaring dat het voor herhaling vatbaar was. En ditmaal met een paard waarmee ik een medaille kon winnen. Sinds Rio zocht ik een paard voor Tokio en in Mexico heb ik hem gevonden. Daar sprong ik met Quel Homme onze eerste 5* GP en we wonnen. Met als gevolg dat ik Quel Homme niet meer wilde verkopen, ik wilde hem zelf kopen. Eén probleempje, als een paard out of the blue een GCT GP wint, spreken we plots over een prijskaartje dat niet in mijn budget past. Maar ik kon Quel Homme

niet laten gaan. Ik heb al mijn centjes geteld en al mijn contacten gebeld. Iedereen wilde investeren, om het paard te commercialiseren, niemand wilde investeren in de sport. Gelukkig was er nog mijn goede vriend Alexander Oancea. We hadden samen al eens onze Olympische droom beleefd met Grand Cru vd Rozenberg, waar hij eigenaar van was. Oancea wilde dat avontuur ook nog eens beleven en samen kochten we de helft van Quel Homme. Met één objectief: Tokio. Je hebt geld nodig, maar wat de sport je kan geven, is niet in geld te vertalen. Geld mag geen doel zijn in je leven. Als je kanker hebt, weet je niet wat morgen brengt. Wat ik wel weet is dat we nu een bijzonder mooie, intense

reis maken met Quel Homme die ons kippenvel en onvergetelijke momenten bezorgt. Goud winnen op het EK en brons op de OS, en tussendoor de GP van Knokke Hippique winnen, dat zijn dromen die uitkomen. En een paard dat dromen laat uitkomen is het mooiste wat je kan overkomen.’

Verkopen uit noodzaak Jérôme vertelt het met heel veel enthousiasme. ‘ik ben 42 en vanaf ik op een pony zat, droomde ik van een Olympische medaille. En ik kom niet uit een familie waar het evident was om zoiets te dromen. Tot pakweg 10 jaar geleden was ik een ruiter die paarden opleidde en verkocht. In 2012 werd ik Belgisch kampioen, met

Tic Tac du Seigneur die, zoals dat ging in die tijd, werd verkocht. Ik besefte op dat ogenblik dat Tic Tac een Olympisch paard was, alleen moest ik verkopen uit noodzaak. Vier jaar later sprong Tic Tac de Olympische Spelen met Ben Maher. Tic Tac heb ik duur verkocht, ik kon investeren in mijn stal en huis en besloot dat ik vanaf dan vooral voor de sport zou gaan. Ik wilde mijn kinderdroom najagen. Ik laat me nog steeds in met handel, al ligt mijn prioriteit bij de topsport.’

Corona En dan brak corona uit, in het Olympisch jaar. De Spelen werden uitgesteld. ‘Een moeilijke periode, alsof mijn Olympische droom uiteenspatte.

Simultaan waren er klanten voor Quel Homme. Heel concreet zelfs. De dierenarts van de koper was Quel Homme komen keuren en ik voelde er me slecht bij. Was ik nu echt mijn droom aan het verkopen? Neen, dat kon ik niet laten gebeuren. Daar zijn slapeloze nachten aan voorafgegaan. Na het EK in Rotterdam, het jaar voor Tokio, was Quel Homme waanzinnig gegeerd en de prijs steeg recht evenredig. Dat was gecompliceerd. Aan de andere kant, stel dat ik in Tokio Quel Homme met een andere ruiter een medaille zag winnen? Dat zou pas pijnlijk geweest zijn. Geen idee hoe ik dat zou overleefd hebben (lacht).’

De grootste verdienste van Quel Homme is dat hij me zelfvertrouwen gegeven heeft” En dan mijmert Jérôme Guery: ‘het leven is al heel genereus geweest met mij. Je hebt het niet altijd in de hand. Aan de andere kant denk ik vaak dat het zo moet zijn. Alles gebeurt met een reden waar wij geen invloed op hebben. Kijk naar Papillon Z. Hij startte zijn carrière met Rik Hemeryck en verhuisde later naar Gregory Wathelet. Hij wilde er niet meer mee rijden en zo kwam hij bij mij terecht. Gregory was toen een veel betere ruiter dan ik. Bij mij werd Papillon Z mijn eerste paard en dat besefte hij. Een paard voelt die erkenning. Ik won er in 2015 de eerste GP van Knokke Hippique mee. Omdat hij op het juiste moment in mijn leven gekomen is. Waarom? Dat kan ik niet verklaren. Ik zal alles doen om mijn doel te bereiken. Lukt dat niet, dan is dat omdat het zo niet mocht zijn. Zoals in de individuele competitie in Tokio. Die weigering op de laatste hindernis. Dat heeft Quel Homme nog nooit gedaan. Ik ben daar in de fout gegaan. Achteraf begrijp ik dat. Ik werd gebombardeerd als favoriet. Er circuleerden op sociale media al filmpjes van supporters in feeststemming.

Ik zette mezelf onder druk en dat was fout. Niet Quel Homme, ik ben de enige die in de fout gegaan is. En eerlijk, heb je de barrage gezien van de Olympische Spelen? Ik zou sowieso te traag geweest zijn (lacht).’

Zelfzeker en van niks bang Zijn menselijke vergelijking is nooit veraf. ‘Als ik ooit naar de oorlog moet gaan, is het met Quel Homme. Hij is van niks bang en zo zelfzeker. Hij gaat voor mij door een vuur. En wat een autoriteit! Je hebt van die mensen die op een natuurlijke manier gezag afdwingen om wie ze zijn, door hun présence en persoonlijkheid. Zij bereiken die status van natuurlijke leider zonder kabaal. Zo is Quel Homme ook. Hij is de baas op stal en dat was een natuurlijk proces. Hij werd onmiddellijk aanvaard als le grand patron. Het grappige is dat iedereen denkt dat hij groot is. Hij meet 1.67m, maar hij toont zich wel groots in de piste. Misschien is zijn grootste verdienste dat hij me zelfvertrouwen gegeven heeft. In Rio was ik op de Olympische Spelen, maar ik speelde er geen hoofdrol. Dat kruipt ergens in je hoofd. Ben ik wel goed genoeg? Ben ik wel een topruiter? Die twijfel was er, Quel Homme heeft die weggenomen. Hij heeft me de bevestiging gegeven en bracht mijn leven in evenwicht.’

Laatste optreden in Parijs Quel Homme de Hus is ook een dekhengst en Jérôme heeft al een droomcombinatie: ‘vorig jaar net voor de Rolex GP van Aken was ik Quel Homme de Hus aan het losrijden in de paddock en we kruisen Daniel Deusser met Killer Queen VDM. Quel Homme kijkt nooit naar andere merries, naar Killer Queen begon hij spontaan te hinniken. Daniel en ik lachten: misschien laten we ze op een dag eens kennismaken, maar nu nog niet, zei Daniel. Dat zou effectief een mooie combinatie zijn.’ Jérôme heeft een zoon van 17 die eveneens springt en denkt al over de toekomst: ‘ik hoop dat ik met Quel Homme de Olympische Spelen van Parijs kan springen. Dat zou een mooi laatste optreden zijn. Voor Quel Homme en misschien ook voor mij?’

‘A horse that makes dreams come true is the best thing that can happen to you’ We go back to June 2021. Jérôme Guery and Quel Homme de Hus were selected for the Tokyo Olympics, which was no surprise, but rather a conformation after their gold medal at the European Championships. Knokke Hippique was considered a rehearsal for the Olympics. With as many as 7 riders placed in the top 10 of the world, the Rolex GP presented by Audi was a dress rehearsal for Tokyo. Daniel Deusser, Steve Guerdat, Martin Fuchs, Scott Brash, all rode and competed to win the Rolex GP, but it was Jérôme Guery who won the day. For the second time! In 2015, Jérôme was the first winner of Knokke Hippique. But this time, just before the jump-off, did he consider his important nomination in Tokyo? “Before the start of the course I did, but once you are in the arena, you only think about the jump-off and winning that Audi. And Quel Homme was definitely in great shape,” says Guery with a big smile. A few weeks later, his form was indeed confirmed

Not impressed Jérôme saw Quel Homme de Hus for the first time at Gaetan Decroix’ place: “A young horse of which no one could guess how high he would jump. Yes, he showed plenty of ability, but he also showed a very special technique. Previously I would coach Gaetan and Quel Homme every now and then, and give him some tips. When he jumped 1.40, I was not impressed. But that changed when Quel Homme jumped 1.50. Only

Three years ago, I was already thinking about an Olympic medal with Quel Homme... “I rode at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics and that was such an unforgettable experience that it was well worth repeating. And this time with a horse with which I would actually have a chance to win a medal. Since Rio I had been searching for a horse to ride in

Tokyo and I found him in Mexico where I jumped with Quel Homme our first 5* GP - and won! As a consequence I no longer wanted to sell Quel Homme - I wanted to buy him myself. There was just a tiny problem: when a horse wins a GCT Grand Prix out of the blue, suddenly the price tag no longer fits my budget. But I could not let go of Quel Homme. So I counted my savings and called all my contacts. Everyone wanted to invest with the purpose of commercialisation, but no one was interested in investing in the sport. Luckily there was my good friend Alexander Oancea. Together we had lived our Olympic dream with Grand Cru van de Rozenberg, a horse owned by Alexander. Oancea too wanted to relive that adventure and together we bought half of Quel Homme. With only one goal in mind: Tokyo. Yes, you need money, but what the sport can bring you, cannot be translated into money. Money should not be a purpose in life. When you are diagnosed with cancer, you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What I do know is that right now we are on a fantastic, intense journey with Quel Homme that gives us goose bumps and unforgettable moments. Winning gold at the European Championships and bronze at the Olympics - and in between the Grand Prix of Knokke Hippique - those are dreams coming true. And a horse that makes dreams come true is the best thing that can happen to you.”

The greatest credit of Quel Homme is that he has given me self-confidence” Selling out of necessity Jérôme tells with great enthusiasm: “I am 42 years old now and from the moment I sat on a pony, I dreamt of an Olympic medal. And I do not come from a family where a dream like that was considered to be normal. Until approximately 10 years ago, I was a rider schooling and training horses to subsequently sell them. In 2012 I became Belgian champion with Tic Tac du Seigneur, who subsequently - as was the normal thing in those days - was sold. I knew at the time that Tic Tac was an Olympic horse, but I had to sell him out of necessity. Four years later, Ben Maher went to the Olympics with Tic Tac. I sold Tic Tac for a very good price, which enabled me to invest in my stables and home and from that moment, I decided the sport would be my primary goal. I wanted to pursue my childhood dream. I still school and train horses to commercialise them, but top sport is now my priority”.

Covid-19 And then in the Olympic year, the world was faced with Covid-19. The Olympics were postponed. “A very tough period, as if my Olympic dream had been shattered. At the same time, potential buyers called for Quel Homme, and there was a serious candidate. The potential buyer’s vet came to inspect Quel Homme and I felt very bad about it. Was I really selling my dream? No, I could not let that happen. But it caused me many sleepless nights. After the Eu-

ropean Championships in Rotterdam, the year before Tokyo, many parties were interested in buying him and his value increased accordingly. That complicated things. On the other hand, what if I would witness Quel Homme win a medal with another rider in Tokyo? That would have been really painful. I have no idea how I would have survived that (laughing).” And Jérôme Guery muses: “Life has been very generous to me. Of course, you do not control everything. On the other hand, I often think that things happen for a reason. Everything happens for a reason and we cannot influence it. Look for example at Papillon Z. He started his career under Rik Hemeryck and later moved to Gregory Wathelet, who then at some point did not want to ride Papillon any longer and he ended up in my stables. At the time, Gregory was a much better rider than I was. But at my place, Papillon Z became my primary horse and horses know that. A horse feels the recognition. And in 2015, I won the first Grand Prix of Knokke Hippique with him. Because he had come into my life at exactly the right time. Why? I cannot explain it. I will do anything to reach my goal. And if I do not succeed, then it was simply not meant to be. Like the individual competition in Tokyo. The stop at the last jump. Quel Homme had never done that before. It was me who made the mistake. Looking back, I can understand it. I was made the favourite. Videos of support-

ers in a celebratory mood had already been circulating on social media. I put too much pressure on myself and that was not good. It was not Quel Homme who made the mistake, the only one who made the mistake was me. And honestly, did you see the Olympic jump-off? By all means, we would have been too slow (laughing)”.

Self-assured and not afraid of anything The human comparison is never far away. “If I would ever have to go to war, it would be with Quel Homme. He is not afraid of anything and so very sure of himself. For me, he will go through fire. And his authority! Some people naturally command authority because of who they are, through their presence and personality. They are natural leaders without making a fuss. That is precisely how Quel Homme is. In the stables, he is the boss and that was a natural process. All horses immediately accepted him as the leader. The funny thing is that everybody thinks of him as a big horse. But with 16.5 hands he is not all that tall, nevertheless he looks very tall in the arena. Perhaps his greatest credit is that he has given me self-confidence. I participated in the Rio Games, but I did not play a leading role. That keeps lingering in your thoughts. Am I even good enough? Am I a top rider? The doubts I had concerning myself were taken away by Quel Homme. He confirmed my skills and brought balance to my life.”

Last show in Paris Quel Homme de Hus is not only a showjumper, but also a working stallion. Jérôme already has the perfect combination in mind: “Last year, just before the Aachen Rolex GP, while warming up in the paddock, we came near to Daniel Deusser with Killer Queen VDM. Quel Homme never looks at mares, but he spontaneously started whinnying and called out to Killer Queen. Daniel and I were both laughing: ‘Perhaps we will let them meet one day, but not right now,’ said Daniel. But it would indeed be a very good combination”. Jérôme has a 17-year old son who also rides and dreams about his future. “I hope I will be able to participate in the Paris Olympics with Quel Homme. That would be a fantastic final stage for him. And not only for him, but perhaps also for me.”

‘Mijn grote wens is dat ik op termijn kampioenschappen kan springen met het Zweedse team’ Er zijn weinig ruiters die zo naadloos laveren tussen diverse niveaus als Petronella Andersson. Van een nationale wedstrijd met jonge paarden naar een tweede plaats in de landenprijs van Aken en terug. ‘Ik hou van die opbouw, de opleiding en het traject dat we afleggen van jong paard naar vijfsterren paard’, vertelt Petronella die haar plaatsje gevonden heeft tussen de jonge- en vijfsterrenpaarden van Stephex. Op haar 19e wilde de Zweedse een jaartje in het buitenland paardrijden. Ze keerde niet meer terug en intussen zijn we 12 jaar later. Bij Stephex begint ze met jonge paarden, die ze tot het hoogst haalbare niveau mag opleiden. Het resultaat zien we tijdens CSIO Knokke Hippique, waar Petronella Andersson werd geselecteerd voor het Zweedse team. Was Olympisch kampioen H&M Indiana het eerste paard dat je bij Stephex leerde kennen? Effectief! Eén van mijn eerste wedstrijden voor Stephex was in Arezzo. Ik reed er naartoe met een karrevracht paarden, waaronder de zevenjarige Indiana. In Arezzo was een scout van H&M, samen met de verantwoordelij-

ke. Ze vroegen of Indiana te koop was. Ja dus. Ik heb ze gereden op het voorterrein. Ze werd ter plaatse veterinair gekeurd en 24 uur later heb ik ze naar de stal van Malin Baryard gebracht. Ik ben dus zonder Indiana terug naar Wolvertem gereden. Ik herinner me ze nog als een merrie met een zeer sterk karakter. En power! Ik had tot dan nog nooit een jong paard met zoveel kracht gevoeld. Ze is niet de mooiste, een korte hals en lange rug. De verhoudingen kloppen niet overal bij haar. Als je ze in stal ziet staan, zou je er niet naar omkijken. Pas als je er opzit, weet je hoe getalenteerd ze is. Als zevenjarige wist ik ook niet dat ze later Olympisch kampioen zou worden, dat ze veel in haar mars had, was op jonge leeftijd wel duidelijk. Zweden won in totaal 9 medailles in Tokio, 2 werden gewonnen door de ruiters. Peder Fredricson mocht zelfs de vlag dragen in de slotceremonie. Hoe populair is jumping in Zweden? De andere medailles werden gewonnen in het discuswerpen, zwemmen, zeilen en onze vrouwen pakten zilver in het voetbal. Peder was de enige

Zweedse atleet die twee medailles won. Hij heeft onze sport populair gemaakt in Zweden. Het was vroeger anders. Ik herinner me nog een incident. In elk land worden op het einde van het jaar sporttrofeeën uitgereikt. Meestal ging die award naar een voetballer, meer specifiek naar Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Tot Peder Fredricson werd verkozen tot sportman van het jaar. Dat gaf aanleiding tot grote consternatie. Toch geen ruiter? Daar was veel kritiek op. Er werd toen een tv programma gemaakt waarbij alle critici en tegenstanders werden uitgenodigd. Ze hebben ze één voor één op een paard gezet. Sindsdien is het respect voor onze sport enkel maar toegenomen en worden ruiters als volwaardige atleten erkend. Jij behoort niet tot dat kransje topruiters? Ik ken mijn plaats en het is duidelijk dat ik niet tot het Olympisch team van Zweden behoor. Al werd ik wel geselecteerd in het team voor Aken. En het is toch een droom van elke ruiter om daar te mogen rijden.

Jij bent één van de weinige ruiters die vlot schakelt tussen twee en vijfsterren? Ik vind dat super plezant. Mijn vier beste paarden rijd ik vanaf hun 7 jaar. Ik hou wel van die opbouw en het traject dat we afleggen van jong paard naar vijfsterren paard. Dat is het doorsnee parcours dat een Stephex ruiter aflegt. Zoé en Emilie Conter, Michael Hughes en Kendra Brinkop doen net hetzelfde. Wij krijgen zes en zevenjarigen toegewezen die we trainen en opleiden naar het hoogst haalbare niveau, wat impliceert dat we op alle niveaus rijden. Als je natuurlijk zoals Daniel Deusser elke week vijfsterren springt, is er geen plaats meer voor een tweesterren of een BK/WK jonge paarden. Veel werk gebeurt thuis en daar moet je tijd voor hebben.

‘H&M Indiana was één van de eerste paarden die ik bij Stephex gereden heb’” Wat is in essentie het verschil tussen een twee en vijfsterren? Ik ben mentaal moe en kapot na een vijfsterren. Dat gaat gepaard met een andere druk, andere focus, concentratie, inspanning. Dat is een gans andere beleving. Op een nationale of kleine internationale wedstrijd, doe je ook je best. Een vijfsterren is mentaal heel belastend. Je mag dat niet onderschatten. Dat is ook een reden waarom ik hou van die afwisseling. Met jonge paarden train je op concours, met oudere paarden presteer je op concours. Dat vraagt een heel andere instelling. Ruiters die elke week vijfsterren springen, moeten presteren. Die druk moet heel zwaar zijn. Al zal dat ook een gewoonte zijn zeker? Die hoge hindernis is niet het probleem, het is alles er omheen en dat valt onder noemer management wat je niet mag onderschatten.

Wat zou jouw ideale kalender zijn? Met een gemiddelde van één vijfsterren per maand ben ik tevreden. Maar in eerste instantie wordt mijn agenda ingevuld door mijn paarden. Zij bepalen mijn wedstrijden. Jij mag je paarden blijven rijden tot ze verkocht worden? Daar denk ik niet aan. Enerzijds is Stephan Conter een sportman. Hij geniet van de sport. Herinner u de barrage van de laatste Rolex GP van de Brussels Stephex Masters, met vier ruiters uit zijn stal en Jessica Springsteen die hier toen trainde en wint. Dat is het mooiste wat hem kan overkomen. Anderzijds moet er verkocht worden, al weten we dat er altijd nieuwe paarden

klaarstaan. Dat is de sterkte van Stephan, hij denkt verder dan wij. Als hij een paard verkoopt, heeft hij al een ander voor u in zijn achterhoofd. Hij kan de juiste paarden aan de juiste ruiters matchen. En het is niet gemakkelijk om toe te geven, maar hij heeft altijd gelijk. Of toch bijna altijd. Dan krijg je een paard waar je aanvankelijk niet in gelooft. Hij kan je dan op zo’n subtiele en speciale manier pushen en triggeren, dat je er toch in gaat geloven en dat draait meestal goed uit. Castres is daar een mooi voorbeeld van. Ik vond hem aanvankelijk een fijn paard, zonder meer. Dat wordt je beste paard, zei hij. Ik dacht: dat zal wel. Ik heb hem moeten gelijk geven (lacht). Stephan daagt je constant uit, al weten wij on-

dertussen ook wel hoe we hem moeten aanpakken (knipoogt). Gaan belangrijke wedstrijden gepaard met druk en hoge verwachtingen? Druk is nooit een goede gids en dat beseffen we hier allemaal. Omdat we weten hoe het spelletje werkt, hoe snel een balk kan vallen. We kennen de sport. Als er al druk is, komt dat vooral van de buitenwereld, al kan ik dat gemakkelijk loslaten. Gelukkig maar, als jij druk voelt, voelt je paard dat zeker en wordt het onzeker. Dat leer je door ervaring. Ik herinner me nog het eerste WK in Zangersheide dat ik reed voor Stephex. Ik wilde extra mijn best doen en legde mezelf te veel

Met jonge paarden train je op concours, met oudere paarden presteer je op concours” druk op. Dat heb ik afgeleerd. Nu heb ik een gezonde spanning, zonder mezelf te verliezen. Opleiding blijft je specialiteit? Zo ben ik op m’n 19e begonnen bij Stal Hendrix. Daar begon ik met vier en vijfjarigen. Ik heb mijn school afgewerkt en nadien wilde ik voor één jaar naar het buitenland om echt te leren paardrijden. Ik ben niet meer teruggekeerd naar Zweden. Paarden zijn altijd in mijn leven geweest, ze zijn onlosmakelijk verbonden met wie ik ben. Ondertussen werk ik al 8 jaar voor Stephex. Het grote verschil met Stal Hendrix is dat ik bij Stephex meteen concourspaarden kreeg. Ik heb nu een tiental paarden waar ik allemaal in geloof. Ik prijs me daar elke dag gelukkig mee. Niet alle ruiters hebben het geluk dat ze uitsluitend goede paarden mogen rijden. Een ander verschil met Stal Hendrix, is dat ik bij Stephex onmiddellijk veel verantwoordelijkheid kreeg. Je mag altijd alles vragen aan iedereen, maar hier moet je vooral zelfstandig kunnen werken en je plan trekken. Mijn leven is één groot leerproces. Wat ik het voorbije decennium bijvoorbeeld geleerd heb, is dat te lang niks doen niet goed is voor de opleiding van een jong paard. LRV en de cyclus zijn een degelijke scholing voor de jonge paarden. Een belangrijke nuance is dat je in de opleiding moet springen waar je paard op dat moment klaar voor is. Je paard moet kunnen volgen en het is onze taak om er over waken dat je nooit in het rood gaat. Quasi alle paarden willen meewerken en dan kan de verleiding groot zijn om te snel te gaan. Ik zal nooit te vroeg te hoog springen, zelfs al verleiden ze je daartoe met hun kwaliteit en werkwilligheid. Als ze werkelijk goed zijn, gaan ze de volgende jaren nog voldoende hogen proeven moeten springen.’

Petronella Andersson ‘My big wish is to compete in Championship shows with the Swedish team’ There are few riders who are able to seamlessly navigate between various levels like Petronella Andersson does. One weekend she will jump young horses at a national show, the next weekend she takes the second place in the Aachen Nations Cup. “I love that build-up, the schooling and the process we go through from a young horse to a five-star horse,” says Petronella, who has found her place between the Stephex young horses and five-star-competition horses. At the age of 19, the Swedish rider decided she wanted to go abroad for a year to ride and learn. Meanwhile, 12 years have passed but she did not return to Sweden. At Stephex Stables, she starts with young horses and is allowed to school them up to the highest level possible. The result of this approach paid off when Petronella Andersson was selected for the Swedish team during CSIO Knokke Hippique. Was Olympic champion H&M Indiana the first horse you rode for Stephex? “Indeed she was! One of my first competitions for Stephex was in Arezzo, Italy. I drove to the show with a truck full of horses, including the then seven-year old Indiana. In Arezzo a scout of H&M was present, together with the person responsible for purchases. They asked if Indiana was for sale. And yes, she was. I rode her in the warming-up area. At the spot, she

was checked by the vet and 24 hours later I brought her to the stables of Malin Baryard. So I drove home to Wolvertem without Indiana. I remember her as a mare with a very strong character. And power! Until then, I had never ridden a young horse with so much power. She is not the most handsome horse, with a short neck and a long back. The proportions are not exactly as they should be. And when you walk past her in the stables, you would not turn your head for a second look. But when you ride her, then you realise how extremely talented she is. Of course I did not know that this seven-year old mare would one day become an Olympic champion, but that she was capable of a lot, that much was already very clear at a young age.” In total, Sweden won 9 medals in Tokyo, 2 of which by the riders. Peder Fredricson was even asked to carry the flag in the closing ceremony. How popular is show-jumping in Sweden? “The other medals were won with discus throwing, swimming, sailing, and our women took silver in football. Peder was the only Swedish athlete who won two medals. He has made our sport popular in Sweden. Before, it was very different. I remember a certain incident. In each country, at the end of the year, sports trophies are being awarded. In Sweden, that prize would usually go to a football player. To be more specific, more than once to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Until the year that Peder Fredricson was elected Sportsman of the Year. This caused great consternation. Surely a rider could not win this sports’ award? There was a lot of criticism about it. And then a television show was produced in which all criticasters and opponents were invited. One by one they were put on a horse. Since that television show, the respect for our sport has increased and our riders are now acknowledged as the athletes they are.” You do not belong to that elite club of top riders? “I know my place and it is obvious that I do not belong on the Swedish Olympic team.

And it really is the dream of any rider to be selected to ride there.” You are one of the few riders who seem to easily switch between twostars and five-stars? “I definitely enjoy that. I have been riding my four best horses since they were seven years old. “I love that build-up, the schooling and the process we go through from young horse to five-star horse”. Kendra Brinkop are doing the same thing. We get six- and seven-year old horses allocated that we school and train for the highest level possible. This means that we ride at all levels. When you jump a five-star show every weekend, as Daniel Deusser does, then of course there is no time for two-stars or a Belgian Championship or World Championship for Young Horses. A lot

Of course, at a national show or a small international show, you will also do your very best. But a five-star competition is mentally very challenging. You should not underestimate it. I like the variety. Young horses go to competition as part of their training, older horses go to a show to perform. That requires a totally different attitude. Riders who jump five-stars every week, have to perform. That pressure must really be very hard. Although I think in the end it will become routine - at least, that is what I hope. Those high jumps are not the problem, it is everything around it which is called management and which should not be underestimated.”

Castres is a very nice example of that. Initially, I thought of him as just another nice horse. ‘That will be your best horse,’ Stephan said. I thought ‘Yeah, right’. What would be your ideal calendar?

Are important shows accompanied by pressure and high expectations?

“With on average one five-star show per month, I would be very happy. But my diary is scheduled by my horses. Their progress and condition determine which competitions we go to.” You can ride your horses until they are sold? “I do not think about that. On the one hand, Stephan Conter is a sportsman. He enjoys the sport. Do you remember the jump-off of the last Rolex GP during the Brussels Stephex Masters? Four riders for Stephex Stables and then the show was won by Jessica Springsteen, who trained with us. That is the best thing that can happen to him. On the other hand, yes, the horses are always for sale, although we know that there will also always be new horses to ride. That is Stephan’s strength: he thinks ahead of us. When he sells a horse, he already has another horse for you in the back of his mind. He is very good at matching the right horse with the right rider. And I hate to admit it, but he is always right. Or almost always. Then he allocates a

“Pressure is never a good guide and at Stephex Stables we are all aware of that. We know how the game is played and how easily a pole can drop. We know the sport. If there is any pressure at all, it comes mainly from the outside world, although I can easily let go of that. And that is a good thing, because when the rider feels pressure, the horse will feel it too and will become insecure. That is something practice teaches you. I remember the first World Championships at Zangersheide while riding for Stephex. I wanted to do everything as perfectly as possible and put way too much pressure on myself. By now I have learned not to do that. Now I feel a healthy tension, without losing myself.” Schooling horses will remain your speciality? “That is how I started at Hendrix Stables when I was 19 years old. There I started with four-year-old and fiveyear-old horses. I finished my school and after that I wanted to go abroad

for a year to learn how to ride properly. I did not return to Sweden. There have always been horses in my life, they are a part of who I am. Meanwhile I have worked for Stephex for eight years now. The big difference between Hendrix Stables and Stephex is that at Stephex I was immediately given a number of competition horses. Currently I am riding about ten horses that - I think – will all go to the top. And every day, I count my blessings. Not all riders are so lucky that they are allowed to only ride good horses. Another big difference between Hendrix Stables and Stephex is that at Stephex I was immediately given ample responsibilities. You may always ask anything to everyone, but most of all, you have to be able to work independently and draw up your own plan. My life is one big learning process. What I have learned in particular during the last ten years is that waiting too long is not good for the schooling of a young horse. The Flemish Sports Federation LRV and their training cycles offer a very thorough training for the young horses. When schooling young horses, it is very important that you jump the level that your horse is ready for. Physically and mentally your horse needs to be ready for that level and it is our job to make sure that the horse never crosses the line. Almost all horses are willing to cooperate and as a rider you can easily be tempted to take steps that are too big. I will never jump too high too soon, even though their qualities and their willingness to work can entice you to doing so. If they are genuinely good, they will have to jump plenty of high courses in the years to come.”

‘Bij Stephex word je steeds uitgedaagd door nieuwe paarden’ In Duitsland kende men Kendra Claricia Brinkop als leerling ruiter van Marcus Ehning. In België werd ze bekend als de nieuwe belofte van stal Stephex die Kastelle Memo in Rome, nota bene haar eerste landenprijs, naadloos over

alle hindernissen loodste. Dat huzarenstukje is een blauwdruk van de Stephex bedrijfscultuur: jong talent opbouwen tot het hoogst haalbare niveau. Kastelle Memo werd inmiddels verkocht naar Mexico, al betekent dat

niet dat Kendra technisch werkloos is. Ze heeft een tiental paarden onder haar hoede, waarvan er enkele in de voetsporen van Kastelle Memo gaan treden. Momenteel verblijven ze allemaal in Knokke.

Heb jij drie weken vakantie geboekt in Knokke? Vakantie? Mag ik dat nuanceren (glimlacht). De setting van Knokke Hippique voelt inderdaad als vakantie, al ervaar ik dat enigszins anders. Mijn integrale stal verhuist naar Knokke en dan heb ik het over 14 paarden die gemiddeld driemaal per week in actie komen. Dan spreken we over zo’n 40 parcours per week. Met andere woorden, ik werk in Knokke even hard als in Wolvertem. Knokke Hippique is een dankbare concours voor de ruiters. Ze kunnen zowel hun jonge paarden, opkomende talenten als geroutineerde vijfsterren toppers rijden. Dat impliceert dat je bijna een ganse week bezig bent. Maandagvoormiddag hebben we een vrij moment. In de namiddag is er de veterinaire keuring want dinsdag begint het al met de jonge paarden. Een goed jaar geleden was jij de revelatie van de Rolex CSIO in Rome. Je sprong met Kastelle Memo een foutloze landenprijs en werd tweede met team Duitsland! Daar word ik nog steeds op aangesproken. Begrijpelijk, het was allemaal onverwacht en verrassend. En dan werd ik nog aangeduid om de barrage te rijden tegen Gregory Wathelet en Nevados S. Tegen zoveel ervaring kon ik niet op. Voor mij was het mijn eerste 5* landenprijs met Kastelle Memo. Ik kon dus leven met de tweede plaats. Ook omdat ik verloor tegen een Belg. Ik werk nu drie jaar voor Stephex en voel me een halve Belg. Jij bent geboren en getogen tussen de paarden. Stond het in de sterren geschreven dat jij profamazone zou worden? Ik heb nooit iets anders willen worden. Mijn ouders reden en fokken paarden. Ik zat op een paard voor ik kon stappen, ik was dus voorbestemd (glimlacht). Ik was 11 jaar wanneer ik mijn eerste 1.40m proef won. Toen al bij de paarden,

ik heb niet lang met de pony’s gereden. In Duitsland krijgen jeugdruiters een medaille als ze tienmaal een 1.40m proef winnen. Voor Duitse jeugdruiters is dat een waardevolle trofee. Christian Ahlmann is de jongste ruiter ooit die die medaille in ontvangst mocht nemen. Hij was toen 13 jaar. Ik kreeg die medaille op m’ 14e. Er is een nieuwe, sterke generatie twintigers opgestaan met onder andere Maurice Tebbel en Niklas Krieg, en één van mijn beste vriendinnen is Laura Klaphake.

Als Stephex ruiter begin je onderaan de ladder, net zoals je jonge paarden en samen bouw je op naar het hoogst haalbare” Vonden je ouders het een goed idee dat hun dochter profamazone wilde worden? Ik ben in samenspraak met mijn ouders niet meteen profamazone geworden. Ik studeerde af op m’n 18e en heb vervolgens drie jaar voor de Duitse federatie gewerkt, waar ik alles leerde over het management en de administratie die bij een sportstal komt kijken. In die periode trainde ik

mijn paarden ’s morgens vroeg en ’s avonds laat. Op de federatie leerde ik onze bondscoach Otto Becker kennen. Hij wist hoe leergierig, gemotiveerd en ambitieus ik ben en belde Marcus Ehning. Niet veel later mocht ik bij hem beginnen als ruiter. Marcus Ehning heeft een bijna magische status. Voor veel jonge ruiters is hij het ultieme voorbeeld. Verklaar jij dat eens? Voor mij is hij ook magisch. Als je hem thuis ziet rijden, kijk je ook al naar magie. Omdat hij zo één wordt met zijn paard en omgekeerd. Herinner je nog zijn passage met Comme Il Faut in de Brussels Stephex Masters? Dat was een masterclass. De manier waarop hij zowel vrijdag de hoofdproef als zondag de Rolex GP won is onevenaarbaar. Het grappige is dat iedereen zijn stijl bewondert, terwijl Marcus zelf daar helemaal niet mee bezig is. Dat is zijn natuurlijke houding. Bij Marcus draait het om feeling en connectie. Hij houdt alles heel simpel en brengt alles terug tot de eenvoud, in constante verbinding met zijn paard. Hij weet elk moment waar hij mee bezig is omdat hij permanent in zijn paard zit. Veel ruiters kopiëren, maar weten niet wat en waarom ze iets doen. Marcus heeft me leren nadenken bij elke beweging of handeling op een paard. Ik geef toe dat ik het eerste jaar veel getwijfeld heb. Zou ik dit ooit kunnen evenaren? Ik reed al jaren, won GP’s, werd geselecteerd voor jeugd EK’s. En dan moet je jezelf helemaal in vraag stellen. Die aanpassing realiseer je niet in enkele maanden. Barrages bijvoorbeeld win je zelden op snelheid. Die win je door de kortste route en dat kun je rijden

omdat je paarden goed geschoold zijn en bijgevolg kort kunnen wenden omdat ze reageren op elke hulp. En dat leer je jonge paarden aan. Je moet ze ook uitdagen en constant attent maken op je hulpen, zodat ze snel reageren. Dat is iets anders dan snel rijden. In een barrage is de kortste weg beter dan de snelste weg en dat leren ze al op jonge leeftijd, zonder dat je de intentie hebt om te winnen. Wat is het moeilijkste aan paardrijden? Mijn hoofd leegmaken. Paarden houden me 24/7 bezig. Als je zondag terugkeert van een wedstrijd, denk je al aan de volgende. Je leeft tenslotte voor, door en met je paarden en er is geen ruimte voor iets anders. Begrijp me niet verkeerd, ik heb de job van mijn leven, maar ze beheersen je 24 uur per dag. En als we niet paardrijden praten we over paarden. Want je vrienden zitten ook in de paarden. Ik denk dat veel ruiters er zo over denken. Jij werd in je periode bij Marcus Ehning bekend met A La Carte NRW, waarmee je de U25 won in Aken. Hoe is die hengst bij u terechtgekomen? Toen ik bij de federatie werkte, stond A La Carte in de NRW stoeterij aan de overkant van de straat. Ik vroeg of ik er geen paarden kon rijden en kreeg de toen zesjarige hengst A La Carte toegewezen. Na mijn vertrek bij de federatie mocht ik de hengst meenemen naar Marcus Ehning. Met A La Carte sprong ik mijn eerste vijfsterren CSIO, in Hickstead, samen met

Ehning. Hij stelde het voor, ik was verrast en sprong een foutloze manche. Ik had een heel goede band met A La Carte, dat scheelt. Naar Ehning mocht ik de hengst meenemen, Naar Stephex was dat geen optie. Na mijn vertrek bij Marcus Ehning is de hengst bij hem gebleven. Kan je met elk paard een connectie krijgen? Met sommige paarden heb je meteen een klik, soms zelfs op het zicht. Je kijkt in hun ogen en je weet het. Dat werkt aanstekelijk. Al kan het ook gebeuren dat je helemaal geen connectie voelt tijdens het rijden. That’s life. Het is met paarden niet anders dan met mensen. Dat is de sterkte van Stephex, hier zijn voldoende ruiters zodat elk paard een match vindt. Dat is belangrijk, want het gaat over blindelings vertrouwen en dat heb je nodig op het moment van de waarheid. Ik denk nu spontaan aan Gregory Wathelet met Nevados. Of Jérôme Guery met Quel Homme de Hus. Beide paarden gaan met iedereen springen, maar nooit zo goed als met hen. Zij doen iets extra voor hun ruiter. Nu kom ik terug op wat ik leerde van Marcus Ehning: die onvoorwaardelijke connectie moet er zijn om tot grote prestaties te komen. Als ruiter leer je met alle paarden rijden, je hebt niet met allemaal dezelfde verbinding. Dat is onmogelijk. Is dat een moeilijke zoektocht? Met sommige paarden versta je je onmiddellijk, met anderen doe je er maanden over. Met ups-and-downs, al moet er telkens iets aanwezig zijn dat je blijft motiveren. Na drie jaar Ehning kreeg je telefoon van Stephan Conter?

Die timing was goed. Ik evolueerde dankzij Marcus naar vijfsterren niveau en we vonden allebei dat de tijd rijp was voor een volgende stap. Er was geen haast bij en plots werd ik uitgenodigd in Wolvertem. Ik kende Stephan Conter enkel van naam en weet nog steeds niet hoe hij aan mijn telefoonnummer geraakt is (lacht). Hoe verliep de sollicitatie? Ik heb enkele paarden moeten rijden en werd aangeworven. Zo simpel was het. De sollicitatie was blijkbaar een formaliteit. ‘Ik heb je video’s al geanalyseerd’, merkte Stephan fijntjes op en ze corresponderen met wat je nu laat zien. Ik was vooral onder de indruk van de accommodatie. Dat zie je niet in Duitsland. Het beviel me hier, net als het systeem waarbij je jonge paarden toegewezen krijgt en opleidt tot vijfsterren niveau. Als Stephex ruiter begin je onderaan de ladder, net zoals je jonge paarden en samen bouw je op naar het hoogst haalbare. Natuurlijk wil ik vijfsterren ruiter worden, maar een carrière van een ruiter verloopt volgens een herkenbaar parcours: je bouwt een jong paard op, springt vijfsterren en het wordt verkocht. En ondertussen werk je aan de opvolging. Je sportief succes hangt af van je paard en er gaat een lange tijd over voor ze een vijfsterren status bereiken. En al die tijd moet er hard gewerkt worden aan het toekomstig succes. Daniel Deusser en Lorenzo de Luca zijn hier evenmin begonnen als vijfsterren ruiters. Zij hebben ook hun GP paarden moeten maken. Hoe anders ziet een doorsnee dag er nu uit? Het grote verschil is dat je bij Stephex integraal verantwoordelijk bent voor je paarden. Er wordt verwacht dat je auto-

Van training tot voeding, hoefsmid, dierenarts, wedstrijdkalender, noem maar op. Je kan altijd bij iedereen terecht met je vragen, maar jij draagt de eindverantwoordelijkheid. Kastelle Memo was één van de paarden die je werd toegewezen. Jullie startten op 1.20m. Hoe was de kennismaking? Ons eerste parcours zag er niet uit zoals in de landenprijs van Rome (glimlacht). Eigenlijk was ze niet echt in training op het moment dat ik ze kreeg. En ik had er aanvankelijk geen wauw gevoel bij. Ze was krachtig en had vermogen, dat wel, al kon ik haar niet inschatten. En dat heeft lang geduurd. Tot ik haar voor de tweede keer meenam naar de Sunshine Tour en we elkaar plotseling begrepen. Na bijna twee jaar! Ik kan niet verklaren waarom het zo lang geduurd heeft en waarom het uiteindelijk is goed gekomen. Ik voelde een ander paard onder mij en in Spanje sprongen we onze eerste viersterren GP, we kregen één springfout. Vandaar ging het naar de viersterren van Mannheim en daar werden we vierde in de GP. Onze volgende afspraak was in Rome, wat

aanvankelijk niet het plan was. Een week voordien werd ik gevraagd voor het team: denk je dat jullie klaar zijn voor de landenprijs van Rome? Dat wilde ik eerst overleggen met Stephan. Hij was enthousiast. Dat gaat lukken, was zijn eerste reactie. En wat ga je daar springen? Ze hebben me gevraagd voor de landenprijs. Toen slikte hij even. Ik wilde het een kans geven en het draaide goed uit. Kastelle Memo sprong de twee omlopen foutloos. Ik had er vertrouwen in en we hadden onze connectie (glimlacht). En gelukkig zat Marcus Ehning in het team. Ik weet nog dat hij achteraf naar Stephan ging: dat paard mag je niet meteen verkopen, we hebben het nodig. Rome zal ik nooit vergeten. In de winter werden jullie tweede in de WB van Verona. Nadien liet corona het doek over het winterseizoen vallen en in maart werd Kastelle Memo verkocht… Ik werk nu eenmaal in een handelsstal. Het grote voordeel daarvan is dat je steeds uitgedaagd wordt door nieuwe paarden. Zo blijft het boeiend. Wat je evenmin mag vergeten is dat ik bij Stephex al veel kansen heb gekregen. Natuurlijk heb ik geweend toen Kas-

We moeten ook realistisch zijn, de sport leeft dankzij de handel. Staat er al een nieuwe Kastelle Memo in je stal? We zijn in de opbouwfase (lacht). Met de negenjarige Narcos vd Smitshoeve (Toulon) won ik in mei de landenprijs van Bratislava en hij zou wel eens mijn volgend vijfsterren paard kunnen worden. Do It Easy (Vigo CECE) is een negenjarige Franse hengst en hij sprong vorige maand zijn eerste CSI 4* GP, en we bleven foutloos. Een ander veelbelovend paard is Nector vd Bisschop (Echo van ’t Spieveld). Dat zijn drie negenjarigen die waarschijnlijk eind dit jaar en zeker volgend jaar vijfsterren springen. Voldoende uitdagingen en paarden dus die me motiveren. En dat dank ik aan Stephan Conter. Ik ken niemand die meer gemotiveerd is in de sport en daar wil schitteren. En dat straalt af op al zijn ruiters en amazones. En wij zijn even ambitieus als Stephan.

‘At Stephex, you are continuously challenged by new horses’ In Germany Kendra Claricia Brinkop was known as an apprentice of Marcus Ehning. But in Belgium she was soon known as the new promising star of Stephex Stables who navigated Kastelle Memo in Rome - her first Nations Cup - faultlessly over all obstacles. That achievement is a blueprint for the Stephex company culture: training young talent to the highest level possible. Kastelle Memo has meanwhile been sold to Mexico, but that does not mean that Kendra is sitting idle. She has the responsibility for ten horses of which some will follow in the steps of Kastelle Memo. At the moment, they are all in Knokke.

Did you book three weeks of holiday in Knokke? “Holidays? Can I put that into some perspective? (smiling). Indeed, the setting of Knokke Hippique seems to emanate a holiday feeling, however, I experience that somewhat differently. My entire stable moved to Knokke and I am talking about 14 horses that need to be worked an average of three times a week. So, that means about 40 rounds per week. In other words, I am working just as hard in Knokke as in Wolvertem. For riders, Knokke Hippique is an excellent show. They can ride their young horses, their up-and-coming talents, and their seasoned five-star top performers. But that means that you are working almost the entire week. Monday morning we have some time off. In the afternoon, the veterinary inspection takes place because on Tuesday the competitions for the young horses start.” Just over a year ago, you were the revelation of the Rolex CSIO in Rome. You rode a faultless Nations Cup with Kastelle Memo and took the second place with the German team. “I am still being asked about that. And I can understand that, as it was all rather unexpected and surprising. And then I was also allocated to ride the jump-off against Gregory Wathelet and Nevados S. I could not match their experience. For me it was my first five-star Nations Cup with Kastelle Memo. So I could live with that second place. Even more so because I lost against a Belgian rider. I have now worked for Stephex for three years and by now I consider myself to be 50% Belgian.”

You were born and raised between the horses. Was it written in the stars that you would become a professional rider? “I never wanted to do anything else. Both my parents are riders and breeders. I was put on a horse before I could walk, so I guess you could say I was destined for this life (smiling). I was 11 years old when I won my first 1.40m competition. Even then with a horse, I did not spend a lot of time riding ponies. In Germany, junior riders receive a medal when they have won a 1.40 competition 10 times. For German junior riders that is a very valuable trophy. Christian Ahlmann was the youngest rider ever to receive this award. He was only 13 years old. I received that medal when I was 14. A new, strong generation of riders in their twenties has emerged, including Maurice Tebbel and Niklas Krieg, and one of my best friends is Laura Klaphake. Did your parents think it was a good idea that their daughter wanted to become a professional rider? “In joint consultation with my parents I did not immediately become a professional rider. I graduated at 18 and I then worked for the German federation for three years, where I learned all about the management and administration involved in a sports stable. At that time, I trained my horses early in the morning and late at night. While working for the federation, I got acquainted with our national coach Otto Becker. He knew how eager, motivated, and ambitious I was and he made a phone call to Marcus Ehning. Shortly after that I started riding for him.”

Marcus Ehning has an almost magical status. For many young riders, he is the ultimate example. Do you have an explanation for that? “He is magical to me, too. When you watch him ride at home, you see the magic, too. Because he becomes one with his horse, and the horse with him. Do you remember how he rode Comme Il Faut in the Brussels Stephex Masters? That was a masterclass. The way in which he won both the main test on Friday and the Rolex GP

on Sunday, was inimitable. The funny thing is, everybody admires his style, but he is the last one to actually think about it. It is just his natural posture. With Marcus, it is all about feeling and connection. He keeps everything very simple, brings everything back to basics, and he is continuously connected with his horse. Every single moment, he knows what he is doing, because he is continuously one with his horse. Many riders copy but do not know what and why they are doing some-

thing. Marcus taught me to think about every movement or action on a horse. I admit that in the first year I had many doubts. Would I ever be able to match this? I had been riding for years, had won GPs, had been selected for Junior European Championships. And then you start questioning yourself. This kind of adjustment cannot be made in a period of only a few months. Jumpoffs, for example, are seldom won by pure speed. You win them by taking the shortest route and you can do that

because your horses are well-trained, which means they can turn sharply because they respond to every aid. And that is what you should teach the young horses. You also have to challenge them and make them constantly attentive to your aids so that they react quickly. That is not the same as riding fast. In a jump-off, the shortest route is better than the fastest, and they learn that at a young age, without the intention of winning.”

What is the most difficult thing about riding? “Clearing my head. I am 24/7 focused on my horses. When you return home on Sunday evening from a show, your mind is already at the next one. After all, you live for your horses, thanks to your horses and with your horses. So there is no room for something else. Do not get me wrong, my job is my dream job, but your mind is with the horses 24 hours a day. And when we do not ride, we talk about horses. Be-

cause all your friends are also working in the horse business. I think many riders feel this way.” While you rode for Marcus Ehning, you became well-known with A La Carte NRW, with whom you won the Aachen U25. How did this stallion end up with you? “When I worked for the Federation, A La Carte was stabled across the street at the NRW State Stud. I went there and asked whether I could ride any of their horses and I was then allocated the six-year-old stallion A La Carte. When I left the federation, the stud allowed me to take the stallion with me to Marcus Ehning. With A La Carte I jumped my first five-star CSIO in Hickstead, where I was together with Ehning. He suggested I would jump, which surprised me and we jumped a clear round. I had a very good bond with A La Carte, which meant a great deal. I was allowed to take the stallion with me to Ehning, but it was no option to take him with me to Stephex. When I left, A La Carte stayed with Marcus Ehning.” Can you connect with any horse?

“With some horses you feel a click, sometimes even by just looking at them. You look them in the eye and you just know it. That is catching. Although it can also happen that you feel no connection at all when you are riding. That is life. It is no different with horses than with people. And that is the strength of Stephex, they employ sufficient riders, so for every horse, there is a match. That is essential, because this is about having blind faith,

which you need when the moment of truth arrives. I am now spontaneously thinking of Gregory Wathelet and his Nevados. Or Jérôme Guery with Quel Homme de Hus. Both horses will jump with any rider on their backs, but never as good as with their own riders. For their own rider, they go the extra mile. And now I come back to something I learnt from Marcus Ehning: that unconditional connection needs to be there in order to achieve great performances. As a rider, you learn to ride any horse, but you do not have the same connection with all of them. That is impossible.” Is it a difficult quest? “With some horses, you get along well immediately, with others it will take months. You will experience ups and downs, but in order to stay motivated, there has to be some kind of progression all the time.” After having spent three years with Ehning, you got a call from Stephan Conter? “The timing was impeccable. Thanks to Marcus’ support, I grew to a five-star level and we both agreed I was ready for a next step. We were not in a hurry though, when all of a sudden I was invited to come to Wolvertem. I knew Stephan Conter only by name and I still do not know how he got hold of my telephone number (laughing).” How did the job interview go? “I had to ride a few horses and then I was hired. It was that simple. The job interview was merely a formality. ‘I have already analysed some videos of you,’

Of course I cried when Kastelle Memo left and I still miss her sometimes, but that does not outweigh the unforgettable moments I cherish and the opportunities that I got from Kastelle Memo and Stephex to develop in this sport” Stephan pointed out. ‘And they are in line with what you are showing now’. I was particularly impressed by the accommodation. You will not find such a place in Germany. I liked it here, both the environment as well as the system in which you get allocated a few young horses who you subsequently train up to the five-star level. As a Stephex rider, you start at the bottom of the ladder, as do your young horses, and together you train for the highest possible. Of course I want to become a fivestar rider, but the career of a young rider follows a recognisable course: you school a young horse and when it can jump five-stars, it will be sold. And meanwhile you are already working with its successor. Your success in the sport depends on your horse and it takes a long time before they reach the five-star level. And all that time, you need to work hard to achieve the future success. Daniel Deusser and Lorenzo de Luca did not start as fivestar riders here either. They too had to train their own GP horses.”

How is a typical day different now? “The big difference is that at Stephex Stables you are entirely responsible for your horses. You are expected to manage your stable by yourself. From the training to the feed, from the farrier to the vet, and the competition calendar, you name it. If you have any questions, everybody will be happy to help, but you bear the ultimate responsibility.” Kastelle Memo was one of the horses allocated to you. You started at a 1.20 level. Did you click with her right from the beginning? “Well, our first round did not exactly look like the course in the Nations Cup in Rome (smiling). She was not really in training when she was allocated to me. And initially I did not have a wow-feeling. She definitely had power and ability, but I could not tell how much. And that feeling lasted a long time. Until I took her with me on the Sunshine tour for the second time, and all of a sudden, we understood each other. After

nearly two years! I cannot explain why it took so long and why it worked out in the end. She felt totally different and in Spain we jumped our first four-star, with only one fault. From Spain we went to the four-star of Mannheim and we finished fourth in the Grand Prix. Next was Rome, which initially had not been the plan. A week earlier I was asked for the team: ‘Do you think you are ready for the Rome Nations Cup?’ I wanted to discuss that with Stephan first. He was enthusiastic and his first reaction was: ‘You will do fine.’ Followed by: ‘What will you jump in Rome?’ ‘They asked me for the Nations Cup.’ That took him a moment to recover. I wanted to give it a chance and that worked out for the best. Kastelle Memo jumped both rounds clear. I had faith and we had our bond (smiling). And luckily Marcus Ehning was in the team. I know that after the show he went to talk to Stephan: ‘You cannot sell that horse straight away, we need her.’ I will never forget Rome.” During the winter you ended second in the Verona World Cup. Shortly after, Covid-19 ended the winter season and in March Kastelle Memo was sold.... “Yes, I work in a commercial stable. The big advantage of it is that you are continuously challenged by new horses. That is what makes it interesting. And you should not forget that I got plenty of opportunities from Stephex. Of course I cried when Kastelle Memo left and I still miss her sometimes, but that does not outweigh the unforgettable moments I cherish and the opportunities that I got from Kastelle Memo and Stephex to develop in this sport. We must remain realistic, the sport exists by the grace of the trade.” Is there a new Kastelle Memo in your stable? “We are in the build-up stage (smiling). In May I won the Nations Cup in Bratislava with the nine-year old Narcos van de Smitshoeve (by Toulon). He might be my next five-star horse. Do It Easy (by Vigo CECE) is a nine-year old French stallion. Last month we jumped his first CSI 4* GP and we remained clear. Another promising talent is Nector vd Bisschop (by Echo van ‘t Spieveld). These are three nine-year-olds who will jump five-stars probably by the end of this year, but definitely next year. So plenty of challenges and horses that motivate me. And I owe that all to Stephan Conter. I do not know anyone who is more dedicated to the sport and who wants to excel more than Stephan. And that reflects on all his riders. And we are all as ambitious as Stephan.”
