Welcome Letter Abby: Where am I? Zack: Home, homey. (She laughs, drunkenly)

Welcome to Belleville by Martha Lavey Two couples. One, Abby and Zack, are American expatriates living in the Belleville neighborhood of Paris. The other, Alioune and Amina, have roots in Senegal and are the landlords of the apartment where Abby and Zack live, and their downstairs neighbors. Abby and Zack are recently married and have moved to Paris for Zack's job doing medical research on AIDS with Medicine Sans Frontiers. Abby is finding it hard to live in Paris. She doesn't speak French, she misses her family. Her mom recently died, her sister is about to give birth, and she has gone off of her antidepressant medication. Abby is in constant contact with her father, who calls frequently (to Zack's frustration). The unease between Abby and Zack is apparent from the opening scene of the play, despite their efforts to connect. Alioune and Zack are friends. They get together to smoke pot but their camaraderie is strained. Zack hasn't paid rent for four months and it's left to Alioune, who's under pressure from his family, to collect the money he's owed. The play is a suspense story so it would be unfair to reveal its plot or hint at its outcome. I think, instead, I might point to some elements of the play worth observing. The first is the difference between these couples. Abby and Zack, white Americans, are ex-patriots. Alioune is an African immigrant and Amina was born in France. The differentiation found in common usage usually comes down to socioeconomic factors, so skilled professionals working in another country are described as expatriates whereas a manual labourer who has moved to

another country to earn more money might be labeled an ‘immigrant.’ This is important to the play in understanding the dynamic between the couples and it points to a central theme that Amy is working throughout the play. The recurring mention of home and family, parents and children, is a lens through which Amy is exploring the question of responsibility and maturity and the cultural forces that shape those qualities. Alioune and Amina are parents, Zack and Abby are not despite their being several years older than Alioune and Amina. Instead, Abby is positioned as a daughter: her constant connection to her father and the family of her origin is a point of tension between her and Zack. Abby's sister and brotherin-law await the eminent birth of their daughter and in the banter between Abby and Zack, we see that they regard the couple as rather conventional. There's a bit of scorn in the way that they talk about the settled lifestyle of Abby's sister and brother-inlaw—the implication that they are grown-up and thus “square.” Notice that in the patter between Zack and Abby, their nickname for each other is “homey.” Yes, it's a term of endearment in contemporary slang to signify a closeness, but the constant repetition of the moniker is significant because its common usage is between friends (usually of the same gender) and so conveys more a friendship than a spousal relationship. Because the play is inquiring so pointedly into the nature of home, the idea that Abby and Zack are less spouse to one another than playmates is unsettling. An exchange between the couple when Abby is very drunk is revealing:

Abby: Home homey home homey home. Did you know that— Zack: Gonna have to repeat that. Abby: The word uncanny. It means unhomely. I mean, etymolog-ic-ally. Or in German, or something. It's Freud. I'm dizzy. Through this brief exchange, the playwright has glancingly introduced the specter of the uncanny in Abby's dizzy feeling for home, and hinted at the “Freudian” nature of that feeling. The uncanny is identified as a feeling of the strange and mysteriously unsettling, and specifically, in Freudian terms, describes something that appears familiar but is paradoxically foreign at the same time. Something that should be comforting appears threatening, and all the more so because of the familiar shape it takes. It may be worth noting Freud introduced his concept of the uncanny with the German word ‘unheimlich.’ That is, the opposite of 'heimlich' which can be translated as ‘homely.’ It's here, that Abby, in her disinhibited state is able to put her finger on the nexus of home, the uncanny, and the Freudian indication of something below the surface. Something in Abby recognizes an unease in their “home” they have in each other. I love the introduction of “the foreign” into the knot of meaning. It loops us back to Amina and Alioune. Both couples are perceived as "foreigners" in France but Alioune and Amina perhaps have a more "uncanny" relationship to France. Alioune was born in Senegal, the former French colony. He is a familiar in his adopted country in that he speaks French, and because his wife Amina was born in France. And yet their African origins mark both as foreign, “the other.” As Zack and Abby are so clearly outsiders to Belleville, the “uncanny” in that couple may exist more deeply in the personal relationship between them—in the “unhomeliness” of the home they share. The sense that they are more sibling or

playmate than they are spouse to one another suggests that they have never really left the home of their origin. Home to them is a place where they are children, not a place where they have children. Within the context of marriage, their familiarity is, perhaps, strange. The play is asking us to keep two things in view: the nature of the relationship between Zack and Abby, and the difference between the two couples in the play. I think Amy is extremely skilled in maintaining that dual focus. The deeply psychological inquiry into the relationship of Abby and Zack opens up onto a cultural question. How is it that Americans comport themselves on the world stage? Is there, finally, a difference in our sense of maturity and responsibility?

And finally, the play is an engrossing and suspenseful mystery. It's a great theatrical ride—funny, scary, insightful and surprising. We are delighted to bring this powerful voice to Steppenwolf.

Bios Alana Arenas

(Amina) joined the Steppenwolf Theatre Company ensemble in 2007 and created the role of Pecola Breedlove for the Steppenwolf for Young Adults production of The Bluest Eye, which also played at the New Victory Theater off-Broadway. She recently appeared in Head of Passes, Good People, Three Sisters, The March, Man in Love, Middletown, The Hot L Baltimore, The Etiquette of Vigilance, The Brother/Sister Plays (Steppenwolf Theatre Company); Disgraced (American Theater Company); and The Arabian Nights (Lookingglass Theatre Company, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Kansas City Repertory Theatre). Other theater credits include The Tempest, The Crucible, Spare Change, The Sparrow Project (Steppenwolf Theatre Company); Black Diamond (Lookingglass Theatre Company); Eyes (eta Creative Arts); SOST (MPAACT); WVON (Black Ensemble Theater); and Hecuba (Chicago Shakespeare Theater). The Violet Hour. Kate most recently appeared on Broadway as Sara in Grace. Prior, she appeared as Cora in The Iceman Cometh with Nathan Lane, directed by Robert Falls. Kate also appeared as Regan in King Lear with Stacy Keach at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC and the Goodman Theatre. New York credits include work at the Lincoln Center Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club (Biltmore Theatre), Primary Stages, Soho Rep, 59e59 Theatre, Classic Stage Company, Mint Theatre Company and Here. Matt Hawkins (Fight Choreographer), has been a director, actor and fight choreographer in Chicago for the past 12 years. He has worked with The Royal Shakespeare Company, South Coast Repertory, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Stratford Shakespeare Festival, The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Lookingglass Theatre Company, Court Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Writers’ Theatre, Redmoon, American Theater Company, Profiles Theatre, Chicago Children’s Theatre and The Hypocrites. He has been on faculty at the Conservatory at Act One Studios and is currently an Adjunct Professor of Theater at Loyola University. He has also taught at the University of Chicago, Roosevelt University, The University of Iowa and Northwestern University. Matt is a founding member of The House Theatre of Chicago, an Artistic Associate and Resident Director with Strawdog Theatre Company, an Artistic Associate with 500 Clown and the recipient of five Jeff Awards. Matt holds a BFA in Acting from Southern Methodist University and an MFA in Directing from The University of Iowa. Martha Lavey (Artistic Director) has been an ensemble member since 1995 and has appeared at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in The March, Middletown, Endgame, Up, Good Boys and True, Love-Lies-Bleeding, Lost Land, I Never Sang for My Father, The House of Lily, Valparaiso, The Memory of Water, The Designated Mourner, Supple in Combat, Time of My Life, A Clockwork Orange, Talking Heads, SLAVS!, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Ghost in the Machine, A Summer Remembered, Love Letters, Aunt Dan and Lemon and Savages. Elsewhere in Chicago she has performed at Goodman Theatre, Victory Gardens Theater, Northlight Theatre and Remains Theatre and in New York at the Women’s Project and Productions. She has served on grants panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, Theatre Communications Group, 3Arts, The Duke Foundation, USA Artists and the City Arts panel of Chicago. Lavey holds a doctorate in Performance Studies from Northwestern University and is a member of the National Advisory Council for the School of Communication at Northwestern. She is a recipient of the Sarah Siddons Award and an Alumni Merit Award and honorary Doctorate of Arts from Northwestern University.

David Hawkanson (Executive Director) prior to Steppenwolf Theatre Company was the Managing Director of Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, under the artistic leadership of Joe Dowling. Before the Guthrie, he served for eight years as the Managing Director of Hartford Stage in Connecticut with Artistic Director Mark Lamos. Earlier in his career, he was Managing Director of Arizona Theatre Company. He was a former senior staff member at the National Endowment for the Arts and subsequently chairman of its Theater Program. He has also had an active career as an arts management consultant and trustee for many national organizations and foundations. He currently serves as a trustee of the League of Chicago Theatres and is Chairman of the Arts Alliance Illinois. He is a graduate of Lawrence University.

In Amy Herzog’s Belleville, ensemble members Alana Arenas and Kate Arrington play opposites. Abby—played by Arrington—is a free-spirited, even child-like, newlywed. Amina—played by Arenas—is a practical business woman and mother. In separate conversations with these talented artists, I’ve found they have a lot more in common than the casting suggests. In both cases, the actors immediately put you at ease. With Arrington, the conversation flows on smooth Southern charm and sense of humor. Arenas draws you in with a sincere and sustained interest in your point of view: her focus on you triggers an urge for absolute honesty. I asked both of them what they considered their first big break in the business. Kate Arrington: Well, you know you can just unroll the spool…The first big thing I got cast in in New York, I was an understudy in a play called Everett Beekin at Lincoln Center, and it was written by Richard Greenberg. We fell in love a little bit, Richard and I. He’s my child’s godfather now: we speak most days. For whatever reason, we took to one another. He can take it back to the moment when he was leaving and I said, why don’t you come here and kiss me goodbye like a normal person. (laughs) He’s very shy and reclusive, but for some reason that charmed him rather than alienating him as it should have!

Greenberg wrote a role in The Violet Hour with Arrington in mind, and after a rocky audition process, she landed the role. Later, she got a call to audition

the same role in Terry Kinney’s production, which brought her back to Chicago and began her relationship with Steppenwolf. Arenas “unrolls the spool” of her career start even farther: Alana Arenas: Years ago, I had a middle school English teacher that told my mother I should audition for Miami's performing arts high school. I wasn't that interested in the "idea" of the school but at the time I really wanted a bunny rabbit. I struck a deal with my mom, if I got into the school I would get a bunny rabbit. I got into the school and realized I had been duped, the house always wins! I didn't get the rabbit but I consider it my first big break because it was one of the best things that ever happened to me in my young adult life.

Despite the fact both Arenas and Arrington joined the ensemble in 2007, Belleville is only their second show together. The first was The Hot L Baltimore, directed by Tina Landau in the 2010/11 Steppenwolf season. I couldn’t resist asking them what they liked about each other’s rehearsal process: Alana Arenas: Hot L was my first time working with Kate and I admired the scope of her sense of play. She meets the rehearsal room with a large sense of abandon. You need fearlessness to make great discoveries and watching her reminds me of the fun of acting. Kate Arrington: Our characters were pretty separate in the course of the play. But to work with Tina is to do a lot of ensemble work: you get to be very close with your cast. But Alana and I did have one exchange in the play… I think it will be interesting to see Alana do this role because the biggest thing I get from Alana is that she has this huge open heart, but the character of Amina has a certain reserve; she’s hard edged.

Though we were weeks away from the start of rehearsal, I knew these hard-working artists would be preparing. I asked Arrington about her research for the show. Kate Arrington: I don’t feel like this play requires a tremendous amount of research because it’s of our time and a generation I can understand. I’ve never been to Paris. I’m actually trying to figure out if I can go because I do feel like I just want to walk around the streets of Paris and especially that neighborhood. I think Abby’s feelings about her otherness in this place, and her feelings about being a privileged American are so pertinent to the play.

I had been hesitant to bother Arenas about Belleville until Head of Passes was open and running smoothly. When we found some time mid-run to exchange email about Belleville, I asked Arenas what she thought the biggest challenge of her next role would be. Alana Arenas: I'm nervous about honoring the French. Culture is everything. Sometimes I feel like I have driven directors crazy with this, but when I play someone that isn't easily identifiable to me, culture becomes extremely important. In my opinion, nobody exists outside of culture. Even if someone is a cultural anomaly, that is really helpful information if I have to play that person. I think the way people use language is a glimpse into the collective psyche of their culture.

Given the significance of the expatriate and immigrant experience in Belleville, I wondered if either artist had lived abroad. Alana Arenas: I have never lived in a foreign country but I've been blessed to visit a few. The longest time I've spent in a foreign country is about three and half weeks. I've had the great fortune of being a stranger and yet welcomed like a long lost relative. And I've also experienced the sore displeasure of feeling like I disrupted the comfort and order of someone's home. One hopes that the more you travel and the more you learn, you can shed ideas that create division. I remember feeling—in one particular instance—that the sentiment seemed to be, they would have preferred if they didn't have to see me in their country at all. Not a happy feeling and yet, they were entitled. It is their home and they have a right to preserve and protect its integrity. Though I understood that

intellectually, I was deeply sad in my heart because in that moment I allowed myself to believe that divisions between humans would never subside and our attempts to struggle against human nature are futile.

Kate talked another fundamental aspect of human experience: family. Kate Arrington: There are some things about Abby I can really relate to generationally speaking. Her relationship with her family is very familiar to me. I’m of a generation, as is Abby, whose parents did a remarkable thing. They managed to be different parents than their parents have been. As a parent now, I realize how incredibly hard that is. I love the line that Abby has, where she asks Alioune if his parents told him that, “It doesn’t matter what you do when you grow up as long as you’re happy.” And he says, “No” and she responds: “I am increasingly convinced that is the worst thing you can say to a child.” I really relate to that. How confusing it is to walk into a therapist’s office and say, “I don’t think I have anything I can talk about because my parents were really supportive and fantastic and all they wanted was for me to be happy. And I still can’t figure out how to be happy.”

Alana Arenas: "Ensemble" is almost synonymous with "humility." The actor in an ensemble is called to serve their part in supporting the whole. I've even come to learn that self-doubt is a direct attack on the collective. Kate Arrington: Well…the first thing that comes to mind is a quote of Anne Bogart’s. I’m not sure if she’s defining ensemble. But she says something like, “The first step to working with a group of people is to fall in love with them.” To me, that’s the most important aspect of ensemble. It may not mean you love the way they are behaving every moment. But you love them the way you love family.

As I’ve gotten to know some of Steppenwolf’s ensemble members, I’ve learned that part of the ensemble’s success is found in how it answers many different kinds of artistic needs: repeated collaborations, family, developing new skills. Asking an artist to define “ensemble” can be a window into what she gets from—and gives back to—Steppenwolf Theatre.

This might seem to be a digression from expatriate Americans living in Belleville. But if you take a winding trip with me through a childhood memory, we will land in Paris. I don’t think you could call me an overachiever: the term implies a bright ambition that largely masks some minor insecurity. I was, instead, consumed by a fear of failure. I had hive-inducing anxiety about tests and homework. I would burst into tears at the slightest criticism. I made good grades, but I don’t remember any pleasure, any pride in it. That didn’t come until high school. Back then I only did well because the alternative filled me with terror.

My parents had just gotten divorced. Though I didn’t know it then, this year was the eye of the storm. Waking up in the middle of the night to yelling and the sound of everything breakable being hurled into the bathtub had passed. The shouting matches in the parking lots, the visits from child services were yet to come. There in the quiet middle, I was just trying to find normal. The one tactic I had discovered was to pretend that none of this was happening. The assignment was fairly typical sixth grade work. I was to write my family history. It was one of those multi-class units spread over weeks. I remember that we got special writing time, and would sit in our own little spot on the gym floor, the 15 or so of us spread out across the basketball court. Except me. I refused to write.

When pressed, I could give no explanation. I simply didn’t want to. There was only the white noise of that “no” running headlong into my inability to abide failure. Irresistible force and immovable object. No solution seemed possible. The only reaction was panic and angst. I couldn’t fail. But I couldn’t do the assignment. I couldn’t fail. But I couldn’t write. And it was during one of these wailing, whipsaw sessions that my mother’s boyfriend offered me fifty dollars to take the F. For whatever reason, that tipped the scales. It wasn’t incentive, exactly. I don’t remember being excited about fifty bucks. But it changed the equation enough for me to take action. And so for the next several weeks at school, on our special writing Fridays, I did not cry. Instead, I sat on the gym floor and stared at my blank notebook. As an adult, I can’t figure out exactly what the boyfriend was up to. I recall him saying that he wanted me to realize that an F wasn’t the end of the world. That I could fail and survive. It is true this was a lesson I desperately needed. My performance anxiety around schoolwork was definitely unhealthy. And maybe he saw the roots of the kind of behavior that led bright anxious young people to burn out in college. You know: the kind that turn to amphetamines to increase their focus or attempt suicide because they can’t handle the pressure. A dark vision of an eleven-year-old’s future to be sure, but I’m trying to give the man the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he was trying to save me. It is confusing, though, that he didn’t try save me from the dangers of denial.

I have to assume my inarticulate “no, I will not write” was a result of my inability to face what had happened to my home. Whatever emotional defenses I had built to withstand the upheaval of divorce was threatened by the instruction to write my family history. If I did the assignment, I’d have to feel that raw wound again. As far as I was concerned, once was enough. You could argue that the better course of action would have been to use this assignment to help me articulate and process the roiling emotion inside of me. Why would the boyfriend choose to focus on my fear of failure and enable my denial rather than help me face the most traumatic event I had experienced?

Perhaps his odd gesture of love was simultaneously an act of self-protection. No one would blame the boyfriend for the divorce. Well, my dad would. No objective party would blame him. But his role in providing my mother the courage for her necessary exit from the marriage might have stirred a sense of responsibility he preferred to ignore. To acknowledge my distress would bring him closer to facing his role in the radical reconstruction of my family. And it was at least partially true that intervention was needed to curb my grade anxieties. Is it possible that a combination of half-truth and denial of responsibility produced this strange parenting strategy?

In the matrix of relationships in Belleville— that crisscross of marriage & friendship, housemates & landlords—denial is certainly a factor. There are lies large and small that prop of the relationship between Abby and Zack. Lies that all involved choose to ignore. Even in the first few moments of the play we learn of tensions and half-truths around Zack’s work schedule, pornography, Abby’s family and the rent. At first, it seems that the combination of half-truth and denial is an act of love, a misguided attempt for Zack to shield Abby, and for Abby to help Zack. But as the events of the play unfold, I have to consider the possibility that those gestures of love are more accurately seen as acts of self-protection. We do strange things to help those we love. And even stranger things to save ourselves.

The Steppenwolf ensemble first began performing in the mid-1970s in the basement of a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 36 years and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 43 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and nine Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf’s artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theater, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for groundbreaking, innovative work. Steppenwolf’s annual Gala on May 4 was an unforgettable night benefitting the theater’s ambitious artist-driven work and acclaimed educational programs. The evening began with a selection of scenes from the world-premiere production Head of Passes by ensemble member Tarell Alvin McCraney. Guests and members of the ensemble then traveled to theatrically transformed venue for a celebration with cocktails, dinner, an exciting live auction and dancing.

Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby.

Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help. Lost or Found? On-site?
