Welcome to Between Riverside and Crazy When Stephen Adly Guirgis describes the apartment in which Between Riverside and Crazy takes place, he shares that it has “seen better days since the death of Pops’ beloved wife.” At first glance, it seems that care—the act of looking after, of providing for someone’s needs—is absent from this world. But care has not vanished: it has taken on surprising and unrecognizable forms. Whether it shows itself in the awkward morning ritual of two unlikely roommates or in the seemingly constant bickering of the apartments motley crew of inhabitants, a kind of minding, of love, in fact, is woven through this very particular day-to-day. That’s not to say that the people of Riverside aren’t selfish. They are: often destructively, violently so. But the insight that illuminates Guirgis’ bitingly funny exploration of dignity, power and responsibility is that selfishness and care are inextricably entwined. The characters of Guirgis’ plays—like the people watching them—are capable of holding competing desires simultaneously. Audrey worries about Pops AND wants to see him move on. Oswaldo values his conversations with Pops AND puts his own needs first. Junior loves his father AND wants to escape him. We are complicated, contradictory creatures. Friends behave as enemies. Those looking to take, suddenly give. A gesture of love becomes an act of aggression and selfishness suddenly blossoms into care. The joy of Between Riverside and Crazy is that Guirgis celebrates this messiness. He finds both laughter and beauty in it. As Lulu says “I may look like I look—but that don’t mean I AM how I look!” That declaration, paradoxically both an acknowledgement of contradiction and a demand to be seen as a wholly developed individual, captures the spirit of the entire play. Because self-preservation and our responsibilities to the ones we love are so closely bound together, some of the most surprising developments in the play occur when one turns into the other. And some of the most poignant are the moments when it is impossible to tell them apart. These energetic twists in the story, driven by characters who aren’t afraid to go after what they want—even if it’s the opposite of what they wanted the moment before—are part of what inspired Martha Lavey to select Between Riverside and Crazy to close out the season. Several of our shows this season have been contemplative, deeply moving meditations on the human experience. Riverside is an exploration of being human in the boisterous mode. It is profane, lyrical and shot through with a knowing humor that is derived from understanding the havoc we can wreak when we try to take care of one another and ourselves. Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director

Dignity Through It All:

A conversation about Between Riverside and Crazy with Director Yasen Peyankov and Artistic Producer Aaron Carter

Yasen Peyankov: I have been a fan of

Stephen [Adly Guirgis] for years—I love his work. When I read this play it felt so personal, and it just kind of hit me. I was like, “Wow this is something extraordinary. It’s funny, it’s tragic, it’s about family, it’s about society, about race… I mean there are just so many problems in this play!” It’s a play about a lion who has lost his dignity. And through some circumstances, and some of them quite miraculous actually—even magical—he ends up getting his dignity back. It’s a play about a family trying to hang together after a great deal of tragedy and trauma. The matriarch, Dolores, has recently passed away. She held the family together through thick and thin. It hasn’t been easy—Pops, a black former cop was shot years ago by a white rookie policeman and is embroiled in a lawsuit with the city. His son Junior is an ex-con. While Pops navigates the lawsuit, he is also working to hold onto his spacious rent-

18 Features

YP: Yeah, you see it in a large flat screen TV sitting next to a piece of mid-century furniture. There are so many things… the minute I entered that apartment I was like, “Oh my God I’m in the play, I’m in the play.” Ultimately it was the humanity of the play that attracted me, and that humanity was so apparent when we visited Stephen in his home. Stephen is an extremely generous guy and he surrounds himself with a diverse group of people. Just like in the play, there are always people living at that apartment. And just like in the play, his upstairs neighbors are paying ten times what he pays… because people do stupid sh*t like that especially in New York… Like Pops, Stephen is the king of this last oasis of rent control. And he has an open door policy. The door is unlocked and anybody can come in and go out.

controlled apartment, in part because he is still mourning the loss of his wife and this is his last connection to Dolores. The apartment is the gift he can leave for his son, who definitely needs more than a leg up to get back his life. AC: The apartment itself has a very important place in the story. YP: I had been thinking about why the apartment means so much to this man and I didn’t get that answer until Collette Pollard, the set designer, and I went to visit Stephen in his apartment. Stephen was really gracious with his time. After spending over three hours in his apartment, it confirmed my initial feeling about the play being a personal one. I just didn’t know how personal it was. There are a lot of parallels between Stephen’s life and this play. AC: One of the ideas that you and Collette have talked about, which I think is reflected both in the design and in the script itself, is

AC: One of the things that I like about the play is it asks: What do we do with the past? How do we try to overcome the things we’ve done to ourselves and the things that have happened to us?

Illustrations by Donovan Foote

Aaron Carter: What drew you to this play?

the ad hoc living that’s happening on top of the mother’s touches. Even though time has passed, you can still see the evidence of the care that Dolores provided. And there are some images from your research trip where you can see that, right?

YP: Exactly… and how do we retain our dignity through it all? That’s something everyone can relate to but in this play the conversation about dignity is also very much about race. I was driving the other day and listening to the radio and they were talking about the Chicago Police Department and how many

African Americans are saying they feel disrespected by the police. Dignity is a very personal thing, that’s the most vulnerable side in all of us. I mean we all have dignity and any time someone tries to take it away, or even chip a little bit away at it, it just hurts so much. Think about all the times you’ve been really offended. It had something to do with somebody putting you down. In Pops’s case his struggle to get his dignity back is not just about one traumatic racially charged incident, but a lifetime of societal disrespect. AC: And apart from Pops’s struggle to get his dignity back, there is also Junior working to maintain dignity in his father’s eyes. YP: It’s the most important thing for Junior: to get that “I love you” from his father. That validation. Because he loves his dad, and he knows his dad is not perfect right? Their relationship is so real… and fraught and full of love. AC: Yes but also so sad. Pops is “pops” to everybody in that play, so many people think of him and refer to him as a father figure. And it’s so easy for Pops to be generous with so many people and so hard for him to be generous to his son. YP: Because Pops is disappointed. I think what happened was ever since Junior was a little kid Pops would repeat “don’t f*cking disappoint me.” And kids, especially at a young age, they’re rebellious so Junior did exactly what Pops told him not to do. It’s sad, yes, but so normal. Again… so human. But now in adulthood those two are trying to mend wounds, find forgiveness for each other and learn how to be a family again.

Collette Pollard’s Design Notebook

Inspiration for the Between Riverside and Crazy Scenic Design Last fall, Between Riverside and Crazy director Yasen Peyankov and I flew to New York City to visit playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis in his home. We knew Stephen lived in an apartment on Riverside Drive and we thought it would be helpful to not only get some face time with the playwright, but also to see an example of the type of apartment in which the play might be set. The trip was invaluable; we had not anticipated just how informative it would be and Stephen’s apartment quickly became the singular inspiration for my design. Here are some of the highlights of our trip.

Stained Glass

Reading the script, I dreamt of stained glass windows in the apartment for the Church Lady’s entrance. Never expecting to see such a feature, it was a true surprise to be greeted by these windows and the window bench in the hallway. This style of windows, in which there is an air shaft that looks out to a brick wall, are very common in New York City. Though they never receive sunlight, these decorative windows were installed to create interest and beauty where there wasn’t a view. They allow the Steppenwolf design team to add magic to a moment and heighten the scene.

Flooring

Here is a picture of the apartment’s flooring, French doors and chandeliers, with Stephen in the background. The parquet floor you see runs throughout the entire apartment. It was helpful to see the flooring in person for scale, color and wear, so we could later recreate it. Moreover, because the same floor runs through the entire unit, we were able to treat the whole stage deck with these tiles, allowing for a more fluid and flexible staging; scenes could take place in the kitchen, dining room or bedroom without having to delineate the space with different flooring treatments. Since this original floor can’t be purchased, each tile was CNC cut from plywood, routed, individually painted and hand laid. In this picture you can also see the original chandeliers that were throughout the apartment.

Whole Apartment View

Typical of Riverside Drive apartments, Stephen’s home had a great open layout, beautiful moldings and big windows letting in gorgeous light. Everything in the apartment, outside of the wallpaper and years of paint, is original to the building.

Wallpaper

Here’s a picture of Yasen in front of this amazing period wallpaper. In order to keep focus on the actors in the play, we didn’t end up using green paper in the actual set. Still, we were inspired by the pattern and that inspiration found its way into the final vision.

This picture shows the original stained glass transoms that were found throughout the home, as well as the panel doors that lead to all the bedrooms and bathrooms.

The Steppenwolf Ensemble first began performing in the mid-1970s in the basement

of a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 40 years and Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 46 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf’s artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theater, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for groundbreaking, innovative work. That work is represented in production photos displayed throughout the theater.

Accessibility at Steppenwolf Committed to providing services and programming that enhance the experience of guests with disabilities, Steppenwolf is proud to feature: • Assistive listening devices in our Downstairs and Upstairs theaters. • Audio-described performances, artistic conversations and touch tours of the stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. • Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels fo the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops, installed with the help and expertise of Assistive Hearing Systems Ltd. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.

Lost or Found? On-site? Please check in with a member of the house staff. Already left? Call the Front of House office at 312-932-2445. Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance, fill out the survey inserted in this program or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheatre. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater ? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@steppenwolf.org. Need to contact a patron during a performance? If you need to contact a patron during a performance in our Downstairs or Upstairs Theaters, please call our Concierge Desk at 312-932-2476. Hours: one hour prior to curtain until 15 minutes after curtain call.

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. The theater reserves the right to limit admission of children younger than the age of six. The taking of photographs and the use of any type of recording device is not allowed in the theater during performances and is a violation of state and federal copyright laws. Digital media will be deleted, and tape or film will be confiscated.
