Welcome to The Christians Sometimes it seems there are almost as many ways for a play to get programmed at Steppenwolf as there are scripts in the world. In the case of Lucas Hnath’s The Christians, there was a wonderful intersection of interests that spanned several years, two different artistic directors, many staff members and more than a few of our ensemble. The road that led us to tonight is perhaps the best example of how a theater like ours, one that governs itself based on shared interests and encourages each individual to think in terms of what’s best for the whole, goes about choosing what work to share with our primary partner: you.

RED. = 6 TICKETS FOR $100

THAT’S LESS THAN $17 TO SEE ANY PLAY AT ANY TIME. THE ONLY CATCH...YOU HAVE TO BE 29 YEARS OLD OR YOUNGER.

Several years ago, our former Artistic Director, Martha Lavey, brought the play to the artistic staff. It was a play about which she felt strongly and she wanted to check our response. I remember reading it and being immediately struck by its form. The Christians is truly original in that it changes the dynamic of the event/audience relationship from performer/passive observer to one of leader/follower and so instantly increases the tension of the exchange. Not only is the literal theater environment transformed, the function of public sharing changes. In this play, rhetorical thematic ideas are bravely replaced with direct questions about and challenges to some of the most essential mysteries of human existence. I was also deeply moved that Hnath posed these questions so humanely, gently bursting forth from characters whose intent was so immediately evident; questions of faith, of belief and perhaps most compelling, questions about what motivates us in our public declaration of either. Many of us in the company and on staff advocated on behalf of the play, but in the end, we simply could not match it with a director. This is a very important part of any programming decision: even if the artistic director chooses the play and the ensemble stands behind it, the project needs a director whose connection to the work is deep enough and personal enough to guide it through to a meaningful production. In the case of The Christians, this seemed almost perversely necessary: a play about the complexities of faith and its public testimony needed not just a translator of the idea but a believer in the endeavor. Miraculously, almost a year after our last conversation about the play, ensemble member K. Todd Freeman found himself workshopping another of Hnath’s plays just as artistic producer Aaron Carter sent him The Christians in hopes that it would pique his directorial interest. Primed by his experience with Hnath in the workshop, K. Todd read it and responded that he passionately wanted to direct it. He felt a personal connection not just to the ideas of the play but the characters struggling with them—and as an actor’s theatre, this connection is our North Star. The play, and its life at Steppenwolf, seemed predestined. In a way, the programming of the play and the way it came about is, in itself, an articulation of our entire organization’s shared search for stories that look for the meaning and brotherhood in this world. And at a time of such national fracturing, it feels healing to us to embark on the journey that is The Christians, where the human experience and all its un-knowableness is reflected with dignity, compassion and in the end, faith. the Pamela Brown, a great big wide stage. It’s a challenging space because you really have to fill it, and most of my plays are very intimate and intense. So I thought I’d like to do a play that uses microphones so I can fill the space and also maintain the intimacy. That got me to thinking about my 12-year old idea to write a play about a very big church that’s getting torn apart by a doctrinal controversy. And this seemed like an especially interesting idea for the Humana Festival because I’d come to learn that the festival has two very different audiences: the local Louisville audience and the theatre industry that comes in from out of town. And I had learned from my time at the theatre, getting to know subscribers, that a relatively high percentage of local attendees identified as Christian, while a comparatively high number of out-of-town attendees identified as ‘not’. I got interested in writing a play about religion that could speak simultaneously to both audiences.

Crossing Paths

A conversation between playwrights Lucas Hnath (The Christians) and Young Jean Lee (Straight White Men)

Greta Honold: Lucas, was there something specific that inspired your writing of The Christians? Lucas Hnath: I never have one specific starting place for a play. There are always many. I remember back in 2000 watching a reading of Edward II and thinking that something about that play reminded me of behind-the-scenes battles in big churches.

18 Features

I can’t even remember specifically what it was about the play or that particular performance that got my brain thinking on that track. But ever since then I’d been thinking of writing this play, about a doctrinal controversy within the church.

YJL: Did you notice a difference in their reactions?

Young Jean Lee: Had you had personal experiences with this in the past? What experience have you had with religion? LH: I grew up in a so-called “mega-church” in Orlando, Florida. Additionally, my mother went to seminary when I was 12 or 13, so I actually often attended classes with her. She’s currently ordained and works as a Hospice chaplain. So I’ve been immersed in several different facets of that world. 12 years after I first thought of writing this play, Actors Theatre of Louisville commissioned me for the 2014 Humana Festival. I knew what theatre we’d be in,

Playwrights Lucas Hnath and Young Jean Lee have busy schedules, full of writing, rewriting, workshopping, teaching, traveling, rewriting some more. So Audience Engagement Creative Producer Greta Honold caught them on email and over several weeks the three developed an impressive email thread! Here is an excerpt from their conversation, focused on Lucas Hnath and The Christians.

LH: More remarkable, I think, was how similar the reactions were. More or less, it seemed both ends of the audience in Louisville were on the same page. However, there was a difference in how the audiences responded in NYC versus Louisville. In NYC, the audience was very eager to hear the play as a satire. Most nights there were big laughs from the very start of the play. Andrew Garman, who played Pastor Paul, had to do a lot of subtle moves—little adjustments in his tone of voice, his volume, his rhythm, where and how long he pauses—to gently move the audience away from that response. Most nights it took roughly the first 15 minutes of

the play to show the audience what kind of play they’re watching. GH: Did the creation of this piece come about in a manner typical to you and your writing process, or was the development of the play unique in any way? LH: I often begin writing with a workshop. I write some pages of scene fragments, scraps of language, and as soon as possible I get into a room with actors and begin experimenting. I had my initial workshop at New Dramatists. I asked for five actors and three microphones. I showed the actors many videos of preachers preaching. I asked the actors to take notes and write anything the preachers said or did that matched their expectation and anything that subverted expectations, and then I asked the actors to write down anything that the preachers said or did that made them feel suspicious of or not trust the preacher. This work is collecting received notions about preachers and Christianity while also identifying anything that was a turn-off or made people stop listening. My goal was to, by the end of week, take all of this information and use it to write a sermon that a non-Christian could listen to and start to think, “well, maybe the preacher’s got a point.” To be clear, I wasn’t trying to convert anyone. It was just to get a decent number of audience members past certain assumptions about Christianity and hear what the character is really trying to communicate. The play and its aesthetic came out of this work. It affected everything from the narrative to its design. GH: You’ve both created very unique and intentional theatrical frames for these

Ensemble Spotlight: stories. Can you speak a bit about what you’re doing with this framing, and its intended effect on the audience? LH: I always knew that the play would be in the form of a church service. Church is a form of theatre, therefore it made sense to just embrace it. That meant the play needed to start with a sermon. And then we’d watch the immediate response to the sermon, and then the play would go on to consider the less-immediate response to the sermon, but by that point it seemed like it would be weird to break the form of a church service. The church service feels so theatrical and present-tense. For example, the microphones train us to listen to the play in a particular way, and so to suddenly stop using microphones seemed like it would result in a sudden drop in energy. And so while the play tells the story of what happens during the weeks that follow the sermon, the play is still performed using all of the conventions of a church service. But also, even though half the scenes of the play don’t take place in a church, all the scenes are essentially debates, and the play’s theatrical frame tell us to watch the play as a kind of public forum. This play isn’t trying to show us a slice-of-story about a church. I’m attempting to stage a suspenseful, dialectically-taut battle of ideas. YJL: How did you make it feel theatrical, as opposed to just a debate? I’m really asking about how you figured out how to keep the audience’s attention in this format. LH: Making the conversation of ideas dramatic helps some with theatricality. Generally speaking, it seems that debate becomes dramatic when one character has

something personally at stake in trying to convince another person to believe what they believe. The microphones help a great deal in terms of theatricality though. This is a play where, at times, the most dramatic thing a person does is to decide whether or not speak. By giving everyone handheld microphones you can actually see the decision happen. There are moments where a person might lean into a microphone, then pause, then lean back, deciding to hold back a comment. The handling of the mic itself makes visible some of the characters’ thinking. And then lastly, the choir is an important part of the theatrical equation. The bones of the play are Greek. And so you have scenes of intense argument, broken up by a church choir singing. Alternating between the logo-centric mode of the play and something more euphoric like choral singing significantly helps to theatricalize the event. GH: Thanks Lucas. Okay, Young Jean… you’re up next!

What brought you to Steppenwolf?

I went to college in Wisconsin and had heard about Steppenwolf—this was back when the theatre had only been around for a few years. There were a lot of things going on in Chicago and I decided to come here after I graduated. Like a lot of other aspiring theatre artists, I had my eye on Steppenwolf. I saw productions here, got to know the ensemble and worked hard to get auditions, even though my goal had always been to be a director, not an actor. I wanted to direct great actors, and Steppenwolf gave me that opportunity.

Which role, at Steppenwolf or elsewhere, gave you the most joy?

My favorite production was a play I directed and wrote called Fake. It was about the most personal piece of theater I ever worked on. I got to work with Fran Guinan and Kate Arrington and Al Wilder, among others, and they were terrific. I couldn’t have asked for a better production.

Which role do you wish you could do again, or do you have a dream role?

Hamlet. I haven’t acted in over 20 years, and probably never will again, but I would like to play the melancholy Dane, thank-you.

When you come back to your artistic home at Steppenwolf, what are some of your favorite spots to visit in Chicago? Lincoln Park. Wrigley Field. Twin Anchors Restaurant.

What’s next for you?

I will be writing for the Amazon series, The Man in the High Castle. 20 Features

The Steppenwolf Ensemble first began performing in the mid-1970s in the basement

of a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 41 years and Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 46 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf’s artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theater, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for groundbreaking, innovative work. That work is represented in production photos displayed throughout the theater.

Committed to providing services and programming that enhance the experience of guests with disabilities, Steppenwolf is proud to feature: • Assistive listening devices in our Downstairs, Upstairs and 1700 theaters. • Audio-described performances, artistic conversations and touch tours of the stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. • Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops, installed with the help and expertise of Assistive Hearing Systems Ltd. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Audience Services 312-335-1650 | TTY 312-335-3830 | E-mail access@steppenwolf.org

Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.

Lost or Found? On-site? Please check in with a member of the house staff. Already left? Call the Front of House office at 312-932-2445. Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance, fill out the survey inserted in this program or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheatre. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater ? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@steppenwolf.org. Need to contact a patron during a performance? If you need to contact a patron during a performance in our Downstairs or Upstairs Theaters, please call our Concierge Desk at 312-932-2476. Hours: one hour prior to curtain until 15 minutes after curtain call.

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. The theater reserves the right to limit admission of children younger than the age of six. The taking of photographs and the use of any type of recording device is not allowed in the theater during performances and is a violation of state and federal copyright laws. Digital media will be deleted, and tape or film will be confiscated.
