PATTI LuPONE Bruce Norris has been writing plays for Steppenwolf Theatre Company since 1995, when he was asked to be a part of the first New Plays Lab, our commissioning program for early-career playwrights. Since then, he has gone on to write some of Steppenwolf’s most memorable plays, including The Infidel, Purple Heart, The Pain and the Itch, A Parallelogram and the Pulitzer Prizewinning Clybourne Park. Norris’s reputation as a satirist/provocateur has grown exponentially and he continues to be commissioned by theater companies both in the United States and the U.K. Domesticated marks his 9th production here and his first as a director.

It has been my distinct pleasure to partner with Bruce many times, nine actually, both here at Steppenwolf and in New York and our work together, for me, has been some of the most rewarding of my professional life. Our long-standing partnership has necessitated many instances of my both speaking for him and about him. This discussion, not unlike Bruce’s own when he writes, is never not complex: as enjoyable as it is dangerous and as dynamic as it is exacting. Bruce’s work, always a volatile cocktail of the political and the personal, engages both its makers and its watchers in the essential arguments of our own contradictory (usually) modern existence. We are asked to be truthful in the face of our own collusion in not just the often-times miserable conditions in which we find ourselves but also in the state of the world in which we, and others not like us, live. In Domesticated, Bruce casts this same unerring eye on the politics of marriage and the biology of attachment. Beginning with the now-iconic image of a fallen politician making his public mea culpa alongside his long-suffering wife, the play exposes how the societal contracts we make, when not reconciled with the truth of who we are, will inevitably collide with that given nature and force us time and again into battle with one another and ourselves. Perhaps not surprisingly, Bruce’s reputation as a literary troublemaker and a macabre social scientist suits this gender-study perfectly, although for me, the play beautifully exposes him as less taken with what separates us and more interested in what we actually share—even if all that is how misunderstood we feel.

Bruce Norris (Playwright, Director) has been a Steppenwolf Theatre Company ensemble member since 2014. He is the author of Domesticated, which was commissioned by Lincoln Center and premiered there in November 2013. Earlier in 2013 the Royal Court premiered The Low Road in London. His play, Clybourne Park, won the Tony Award for Best Play in 2012, the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards (London) for Best Play, 2011 and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, 2011. Other plays include The Infidel (2000), Purple Heart (2002), We All Went Down to Amsterdam (2003), The Pain and the Itch (2004), The Unmentionables (2006) and A Parallelogram (2010), all of which had their premieres at Steppenwolf Theatre Company. His work has also been seen at Playwrights Horizons (New York), Royal Court Theatre (London), Mark Taper Forum (Los Angeles), Woolly Mammoth Theatre (Washington, D.C.), Staatstheater Mainz (Germany) and the Galway Festival (Ireland), among others. He is the recipient of the Steinberg Playwright Award (2009) and The Whiting Foundation Prize for Drama (2006) as well as two Joseph Jefferson Awards (Chicago) for Best New Work. Anna D. Shapiro (Artistic Director) began
working with Steppenwolf in 1995 as the original director of the New Plays Lab and joined the ensemble in 2005. She has directed dozens of notable Steppenwolf productions, including the world-renowned production of Tracy Letts’s August: Osage County, for which she received 2008 Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. In 2011 she was nominated for a Tony Award for Stephen Adly Guirgis’s The Motherf**ker with the Hat, which she also directed at Steppenwolf to critical acclaim. Additional Steppenwolf directing credits include A Parallelogram, Up, The Unmentionables, The Pain and the Itch (also at Playwrights Horizons), Man from Nebraska, (named by TIME as one of the Year’s Top Ten in 2003), The Drawer Boy and Three Days of Rain, among others. Broadway credits include the sold-out run of Larry David’s Fish in the Dark, the revival of Steppenwolf’s This Is Our Youth and the revival of Of Mice and Men, which National Theatre Live selected as the first American production to be broadcast to over 700 cinemas. Anna is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama and Columbia College and the recipient of a 1996 Princess Grace Award, as well as the 2010 Princess Grace Statue Award. She is a professor in Northwestern’s Department of Theatre and served as the Director of the Graduate MFA Directing Program from 2002 – 2014.
David Schmitz (Managing Director) has worked at Steppenwolf Theatre Company for 10 years, serving in the role of Director of Finance and Administration, General Manager and currently as Managing Director. Prior to working at Steppenwolf, David was the General Manager at Lookingglass Theatre Company, Associate Artistic Director of Stage Left Theatre and Business Manager at the entertainment agency Adair Performance. Currently, he serves as Vice President of the Board for The House Theatre of Chicago and is a former board member for the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce. David has worked as a strategic planning, business practices, finance and hiring consultant for numerous Chicago organizations, including The House Theatre of Chicago, The Hypocrites and Stage Left Theatre, among others. He holds a BA in theatre from the University of Northern Colorado, an MFA from the Theatre Conservatory at the Chicago College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University and a Certificate in Non Profit Management from Roosevelt University.

Self-Domesticated
to me that Bill and Hillary Clinton have some kind of “agreement” to overlook each other’s indiscretions—but if you think of couples you know… that can’t really be accurate, can it? So we make compromises, civilized agreements— reasonably, I think—that say we can’t behave the way some of our animal cousins do. Would Bill and Hillary be happier if they’d split up? It’s an unanswerable question.
Before rehearsals began, Bruce Norris discussed Domesticated with Aaron Carter, Artistic Producer. An edited transcript of their conversation follows.
AC: I think that relates to the title of the play. Domesticated also invites me to think about its opposite: wild and untamed. Is that the kind of tension that you want to conjure?
Bruce Norris: Ever since childhood I’ve been obsessed with strange animal facts—for example, did you know flamingos are the only animal that can drink water near the boiling point? Apparently they sometimes nest near thermal vents where water is extremely hot and have adapted to drinking it. And one of the things you notice when you’re zoologically fixated is strange reproductive behavior. So, when I knew I wanted to write a play about a relationship falling apart, I put it in the context of the animal kingdom. I thought since my interest in animals began in my childhood, it made sense for that to be our window, too. AC: By juxtaposing Bill’s behavior with animal facts, are you suggesting that we’re too precious between the distinction we try to draw between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom? BN: The fact that we try to draw any distinction at all strikes me as ridiculous. It’s a weirdly arrogant position to take that we are a special animal that doesn’t have habitual behaviors. Dogs lick themselves, pigs roll in the mud. We make war, we lie to each other, cheat, and

have other really predictable behaviors. But people find it insulting and pessimistic to say humans have identifiable animal tendencies. It feels too deterministic to say we can’t improve ourselves—we certainly can technologically, but I don’t think there is such a thing as a better society handed down through generations. That’s assuming the next generation won’t be terrible, when it’s entirely possible they will be.
AC: What kind of price do you think we pay? BN: Frustration. That we can’t live up to the ideals we’ve set for ourselves. That we have agreements and we keep failing at them. Possibly our expectations are too high.
AC: So you don’t see an inevitable upward progression of human culture?
AC: There’s a tension we’re constantly under— on the one hand, there’s pressure of biology and hormones but on the other hand there is the pressure of this social agreement you mention.
BN: I think we are—as far as I can tell—the only species aware of its own mortality, and I think “progress” is one of the nice stories we make up to help us cope with that awareness. To really change human culture we’d need to become different species—maybe selective breeding— or does saying that make me a eugenicist? AC: You’ve talked about how this play is more about a relationship than political machinations. Bill and Judy aren’t getting everything they need from their marriage. Do you think that’s a problem built in to the institution of marriage itself ? BN: There are marriages that work and marriages that don’t. But they tend to be more alike than not. A lot of people have speculated
BN: Yeah, always. We can’t live as chimps. Most of us, that is. So we control those behaviors. But the pull from those instinctive behaviors is always going to tug against our ability to control and restrict ourselves. AC: Do you think Bill was wrong to follow his instincts? Aaron Carter: Domesticated is framed by Cassidy’s school presentation on Animal Sexual Dimorphism. Can you talk about how you arrived at that approach?
BN: I feel like it should be called “SelfDomesticated.” It’s not like anyone else did this to us. We arrived at a set of agreements to restrict and domesticate ourselves so that we can live together. I think that’s for the best, but it does come with a price.
BN: Well, sure. He lied because he wanted two incompatible things. He wanted sexual attention from other women and he wanted to sustain his wife’s illusion that he wasn’t pursuing it. That’s not a good deal to strike. He knows his marriage will be over if he tells
his wife he wants to sleep with prostitutes. So he values the safety of his marriage more than he values honesty. AC: Do you think that directing your own play will allow you to explore an aspect or approach that you didn’t get to in the previous production? BN: I was extremely happy with the production Anna Shapiro directed in New York so I’m basically copying everything she did. But because I’m not her, it’ll change without my even being aware of it. People like to say, “Don’t you think collaboration always makes art better?”—a lovely, democratic idea—but I’ve worked with some great collaborators and some boneheads. And unless you’re doing monologues in the subway, every theatrical act you undertake is collaborative. Every new person that joins in impacts the product in an important way. AC: I enjoyed auditions for Domesticated. I appreciate how well you put people at ease and how much care you put into the people that were coming through. Did that come from your own experience as an actor? BN: I had to stop acting because I despise auditioning so much. It’s demoralizing and servile and it makes you neurotic. Being evaluated based on your looks or talent or charisma is utterly demeaning. So I feel some responsibility to try to mitigate the worst aspects of the audition process. AC: You are our newest ensemble member. BN: I would point out that I’m not the youngest. AC: Do you feel like joining the ensemble has shifted anything about how you interact with the theater itself or your fellow ensemble members? BN: I see them regularly so I have to be nicer to them. I guess you could say it’s domesticated me.

New! Induction loop in the Downstairs Theatre If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! With the help and expertise of Assistive Hearing Systems Ltd., we completed installation of an induction loop on both the main and balcony levels of our Downstairs Theatre in April. If you use the loop, we would love to hear about your experience—we’re still fine-tuning the system, and all feedback is helpful. Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.
