THE DOPPELGÄNGER (an international farce)

WELCOME TO THE DOPPELGÄNGER (an international farce) When I started as Artistic Director in 2015, one of the first discussions I had with the team was about irreverence. Often, and for good reason, art makers in general and theatre makers in particular feel the need to defend the value of their work in relationship to other activities or uses of time. Why see a play when I can order a movie on my phone? Why be stuck in a theater when I could use that time to add steps on my FitBit? Why even leave the house when I can… well, not even leave the house? And so, sometimes, our work can look (and feel) like a petulant grad student insisting that you don’t actually understand the world you live in and forcing you to sit down (like, for a really long time) and take your medicine until you are enlightened. Yes. We know.

COVER

So it was very, very important for all of us that we look for work that also embraces not just what is important but also what is wonderful. Some of my most surprising and memorable nights in the theatre have been those that have generously shown me the humor and humanity of our follies, sending me out into the night exhausted from laughing and grateful to be able to just breathe. When I first read Matthew-Lee Erlbach’s play, The Doppelgänger (an international farce), I knew that it had the potential to deliver both that rare delight as well as much food for thought— a combination almost too extraordinary to hope for.

We were so happy to welcome both Matthew and his director, ensemble member Tina Landau, for a developmental workshop of the play last year. These two artists, and the amazing team of actors that joined them, worked tirelessly to bring this massive production into focus. With Tina at the helm, we were able to marry Matthew’s vision and the Steppenwolf ethos to create a truly original new American comedy that speaks to our time—not just with profundity but with a great big dose of that irreverence we all need. Not to mention the fact that shit does, actually, hit the fan. The Doppelgänger (an international farce) is both astute and sharp, investigating as it does our worst fears about international politics and the innocent victims left behind in its devastating wake, while also using the exacting, perfect science of farce to unmask the fallible and impossibly simple people behind it all. And at this moment, when chaos seems to be the order of the day, I can think of few better ways to combat our collective unease than with the opportunity to laugh good and hard at the absurdity of it all.

PLAYWRIGHT MATTHEW-LEE ERLBACH ON THE DOPPELGÄNGER (an international farce) Edited by Patrick Zakem

Early in the rehearsal process for The Doppelgänger (an international farce), Steppenwolf’s Artistic and Marketing teams had the chance to ask playwright Matthew-Lee Erlbach some questions about the play. Where did this play came from? What made you want to write this story? Desperation. Rage. Hope. Fear. That our species cannot save itself from itself. That we can no longer coalesce around an agreed-upon Common Good—and enact it successfully within ourselves and for each other. If society is an expression of our values… then what does the current world say about what and who we value? We made this. This is not beyond our control. As I was reading about the religious conflict in the Central African Republic (CAR) and conflict minerals all over the world, I saw photos: faces of women and children, turned. By rape. More rape. Torture. Dead children. Husbands massacred. Over ideology. Over shiny dirt. I was compelled to tell everyone I could that this was the world we were living in. But not everybody wants to hear about these things all the time (yeah, I’m that asshole at the party)—so, this is my way of telling you. With chickens. When you follow the trail of blood from the lithium ion battery in your

16 Features

phone and laptop, you will find lithium mines teeming with men, women, and children, working in deadly conditions, often alongside troops, armed militias, and/or cartels. This is the human cost of innovation. This is the true price of most gold, coal, diamonds, and copper all over the world, including the United States. We are building yet another century on the backs of brown skin. And the women, men, and children fighting for justice, fighting for stabilization, fighting for their lives, hiding their children in cupboards—these people are heroes. Nobody should have to live like this. I needed to give their story a platform. Full stop. I view the world through the lens of economic justice. Unions. Where working people are not treated as obstacles to profit but as allies in the creation of that profit. Don’t you find it jaw-dropping that we can have a computer in our pocket and travel the oceans of space while we still tribalize each other to the point of bloodshed over resources? Aren’t we supposed to be better than this? Dear God, how do we permit such

a world to exist? Why have we given this permission for such horror to continue? What does that say about who we really are? Is this human species… Good? The other question I’m trying to answer is what is a viable path to economic and human justice both in the CAR and in our world as a whole? The cumulative consequences of inaction, inequity, and organized injustice are the same, whether it’s CAR or USA: political corruption, unrest, violence, and the loss of civil society. This is about the project of human civilization at the most fundamental levels and the kind of world we are maintaining. We did not build this world that we have inherited and likewise, we do not have to be custodians to those social, political, and economic structures that pit us against each other as a species. This, to me, is a question of liberty: those who are advancing it and those who are repealing it. So then, why farce? Did you have an existing interest in it? Yeah, I mean, the form revealed itself to me in its natural state: what is happening is a tragic farce, and therefore, it must be told truthfully, as is. I grew up on sitcoms that have a very similar structure (albeit miniaturized), to farce, so I’m sure that played some role—and a ton of stand-up and sketch: where the truth is radical. I also have a weird background having studied opera (I was gonna be an opera singer once upon a time), writing for WWE (TV wrestling), and, of course, doing a lot of comedy. Both opera and wrestling (athletic soap opera) are forms epic in size but which require such incredible

technical proficiency. And they draw from archetype, stereotype, commedia, melodrama, slapstick, sex, and have very high, desperate stakes. So I think all that certainly plays into this in terms of ingredients. Theatre to me is townhall, campfire, and church. Where we go to make the invisible visible, get our news about the human condition (maybe even sometimes real news), have our spiritual check-in, and bear witness. I love farce because it provokes the audience to lean forward, asking us not only to bear witness but also participate as another instrument in the symphony. We are now one in the unfolding events. We are now complicit. I also love farce because it is so close to tragedy—there is a very thin line between the two. The farce of the 18th century was about social upheaval, albeit love and romance. These big, acrobatic comedies had to be loud enough to be heard over the markets where they were performed. Similarly, I am hoping our farce can be heard over the marketplace terrordependent capitalism. Can you talk about the challenges of writing a traditional farce in the 21st century where, you know, no one wants to offend or be offended? I once read somewhere that the old Steppenwolf rallying cry was something like “Find the asshole. Rip it open. And stick your head in it.” So, I’m putting my swim cap on and penetrating. I believe that’s called “cranal.” We are provoked by reality, offended by the radical truths that shape our world: I am taking that farce and putting it on stage. I am writing the world as it has been recycled back to me, igniting

those inherited devices, throwing them back at those oppressive power structures, and blowing them up on stage. Unchecked power is exploiting the human species, other species, and the planet as a whole. I will use all rhetorical devices available to me in order to expose and disable those who are dangerous to our society. Satire is about survival on a civic level, sure, but it’s also about emotional survival. Also, we gotta be able laugh at ourselves. If we lose the ability to find ourselves ridiculous, and see the humor in those things that are painful, sensitive, nuanced, dear, we will become constipated, humorless, and depleted of objectivity. I don’t think anyone wants to be so precious that we can’t unpack ourselves (these inventions) and find humor in who we are—otherwise, that’s a very dangerous place to be as artists and as citizens and just as people. I appreciate that we’re all on high alert right now because we’ve been so grossly underrepresented and misrepresented for decades and really all of American (and world) history. But in the case of this play, my job isn’t to protect anyone’s feelings—it’s to reflect back to us the nightmare fuck circus that my generation inherited and is in the process of dismantling and rewriting for the common good of all people, regardless of color, class, gender, orientation, ethnicity, background, experience, or marijuana strain preference (Sativa). May we all wrap our lips around the udders of our sacred cows and suck. Mmmmm… that shit’s tasty.

What can you tell us about the title of the play The Doppelgänger beyond the obvious doppelgängeriness? This whole idea of the doppelgänger is multifold: on the one hand, it’s the surface-level “hey, that person looks like me”—and this is our main story vehicle. There’s also the duality of the public and private faces of our representative and our nations—who we say we are to the world and our operating practices behind the scenes. And when we get to the Jekyll/Hyde aspect of our nature (Man and Monster), I am interested in the investigation of our own primal instincts. Rosie and Jimmy, in many ways, are two sides of my own psyche: there’s the one side that is fiercely fighting for my community and my nation, and then the other side that feels powerless, witless and feckless about it—totally in over my head. Am I doing enough? Am I doing it right? I wrestle with this duality: feeling both like native and constant outsider in my own life, in my own country. And the farce is taking that struggle and sprinkling cocaine all over it—what does this internal battle look like at the height of the ridiculous. And, as this Doppelgänger parable goes, the two things cannot coexist since they both take up competing space. If they cannot unify and come to common ground, then one must give way to the other. And, as Vonnegut would say, “so it goes.” Ultimately, what do you want people to walk away with? We must lift as we climb. We must lift as we climb. We must lift as we climb.

THE STEPPENWOLF ENSEMBLE Steppenwolf Theatre Company is the nation’s premier ensemble theater. Formed by a collective of actors in 1976, the ensemble of 51 members represent a remarkable crosssection of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling and powerful productions from Balm in Gilead to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf produces hundreds of performances and events annually in its three spaces: the 515-seat Downstairs Theatre, the 299-seat Upstairs Theatre and the 80-seat 1700 Theatre. Artistic programing includes a seven-play season; a twoplay Steppenwolf for Young Adults season; Visiting Company engagements; and LookOut, a multi-genre performance series. Education initiatives include the nationally recognized work of Steppenwolf for Young Adults, which engages 15,000 participants annually from Chicago’s diverse communities; the esteemed School at Steppenwolf; and Professional Leadership Programs for arts administration training. While firmly grounded in the Chicago community, nearly 40 original Steppenwolf productions have enjoyed success both nationally and internationally, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, London, Sydney, Galway and Dublin.
