Welcome to East of Eden

It is truly an honor to welcome you to the first show of Steppenwolf Theatre’s 40th Season. This year marks enormous change for our company as we embrace new leadership, celebrate past accomplishments and look with hope and excitement to our future—a future already rife with so many possibilities and opportunities that simply enumerating them, ordering them and contemplating them takes up much of our day-to-day. To find ourselves finally in the theater with a long-anticipated project like this one, ensemble member Frank Galati’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, directed by Steppenwolf co-founder Terry Kinney, is a gratifying reminder that we are and will always be a place that returns again and again to the joy and wonder of the stories and the storytellers at the center of the Steppenwolf experience.

MIX RELIGION AND POLITICS AT A DINNER AMONG FRIENDS...AND EXPECT AN EXPLOSION.

As a theatre, an organization—as a family—we have much to be proud of and, like a family, we understand that we are here because of those who came before us. The group of actors that made Steppenwolf Theatre Company forty years ago are some of the most gifted and inventive theatre makers of any generation and the work they did, their commitment to one another and their collective belief that what they wanted to do was worth seeing continues to be at the heart of everything we do. But equally as important as their massive talent was their considerable irreverence—they never denied where they came from or who inspired them, but neither were they ever defined by them—they followed their affections, interrogated their interests and the work they made reflected who they were in that moment. East of Eden marks an important intersection of that storied history and our unlimited future, not just because of its position at the top of our anniversary season, but because of its themes and ideas and the challenges it presents to all who encounter it: questions of honor, of legacy, of loyalty and of change. I am often asked what I think defines Steppenwolf ’s theater—what is it that we actually do? To me, the answer is simple: we find the spectacular in the mundane and turn the everyday into the most-important-day and in it all you see yourself. John Steinbeck’s work is a celebration of the complexity of a simple life, the most base (and basic) hopes writ large across the sky. The scope of his work is as astonishing as it is bold, forcing open the human heart, opening our eyes to the truth of our own existence and doing all of this with such unerring compassion that one is left breathless with gratitude. The twinning of these two expressions, Steppenwolf’s performative one and Steinbeck’s narrative, is as natural as it is explosive, offering opportunities for our artists and our audiences to ask the most of themselves, to join together as we encounter life’s most complex challenges: what it means to be human, what it means to be “good” and how hard it is to do both.

East of Eden in Context:

Steinbeck’s journey from the political to the personal by Assistant Director Aaron Snook

When John Steinbeck’s name comes up in conversation, The Grapes of Wrath is often quick to follow. Of the dozens of books he wrote, this was the novel that permanently etched his name into the public consciousness. It won the National Book Award, the Pulitzer Prize, was quickly made into a film by John Ford and was eventually adapted for the stage by our own Frank Galati here at Steppenwolf. That production went on from Chicago to La Jolla, then to London till finally landing in New York, where it ran for 188 performances on Broadway, bringing home the Tony Award for Best Play in 1990. The Grapes of Wrath (1939) was a part of the California Series, which included In Dubious Battle (1936) and the much beloved Of Mice and Men (1937), focusing on the plight of the Californian farm workers during the Great Depression. These novels, and Grapes in particular, were an attempt at waking America up to the economic disparity in their own backyard. Steinbeck took a journalistic approach, meticulously researching the lives of migrant workers. His empathy with the farming class ran deep, having grown up amongst them in Salinas, California.

It was in Salinas that he had begun his writing and it was to Salinas where his writing always seemed to return. In 1933, as a young writer, his novella The Red Pony was published, telling tales of adolescence set on a Salinas ranch. Those stories would show up again in 1938 with The Long Valley, a collection of short stories all set back home. Then, after a decade of great success, he would return home to Salinas in February of 1948 on a lengthy research trip for a new novel. While hard at work, he wrote his wife, Gwyn: I miss you very much. But more and more I see that this book is the book and it has to be done by me. It may be my swan song but it certainly will be the largest and most important work I have or maybe will do. The journalistic approach he had taken to the outside world in his previous work had now been turned inward in an intense examination of the self. Sadly, his drive toward his Salinas novel would suffer two heartbreaking blows. In May of the same year, his closest friend, Ed Ricketts, died tragically from injuries suffered in a car accident. That fall, after many years of a troubled marriage, his wife and the mother of their two boys, would file for divorce. These two events would prove too much and sent Steinbeck into a deep and unproductive depression. However, in 1950, the cloud lifted as he met, courted and married Elaine Scott who would remain his wife until his death. In December of that year, one month before sitting down to begin, he wrote a friend: Of course I want the new book to be good. I have wanted all of them to be good. But with the others—all of them—I had a personal out. I could say—it is just really practice for “the book.” If I can’t do this one, the practice was not worth it. So you see I feel at once stimulated and scared. Finally, on January 29, 1951, John Steinbeck sat down to write what would become East of Eden. His daily process began by writing a journal entry to his friend and editor, Pascal Covici, in the left side of the ledger as a warm up. He did this every working day until November 1st of the same year when the first draft was completed. In his first entry, he explains his purpose:

Features 21

Throughout his career, Steinbeck carried a torch of social activism, providing for those suffering a glimmer of redemptive hope. However, as he grew older, experiencing the loss of love and friendship and a haunting depression, his writing became both more personal and more complex. As he had fought for the farmers, he decided now to fight for his sons and attempt to give the younger generation an epic story on the struggle between the life we inherit and the life we choose. I am choosing to write this book to my sons. They are little boys now and they will never know what they came from through me, unless I tell them. It is not written for them to read now but when they are grown and the pains and joys have tousled them a little. And if the book is addressed to them, it is for a good reason. I want them to know how it was, I want to tell them directly, and perhaps by speaking directly to them I shall speak directly to other people… [My boys] have no background in the world of literature, they don’t know the great stories of the world as we do. And so I will tell them one of the greatest, perhaps the greatest story of all—the story of good and evil, of strength and weakness, of love and hate, of beauty and ugliness. I shall try to demonstrate to them how these doubles are inseparable—how neither can exist without the other and how out of their groupings creativeness is born. I shall tell them this story against the background of the county I grew up in and along the river I know and do not love very much… I think perhaps it is the only book I have ever written.

The Things We Carry:

Two Steppenwolf directors discuss what we inherit, what we pass on, and the ghosts that come along for the ride

Ensemble members Anna D. Shapiro and Terry Kinney often commiserate with one another about the plays they are working on but they both hate talking on the phone. The only thing they hate more than the phone is a staged interview. So we asked them to do what they would usually do if they want to communicate with one another about anything: put it in an email. The following is a series of emails that, like most of their correspondence, covers a bit more than their intended topic and heads off into unexpected directions. Anna D. Shapiro: So, I’m sitting here at the East of Eden reading for the staff (the script sounds great!) and I’m struck by the line, “Don’t use your ancestry as an excuse.” I mean, I think I do that all the time. I guess I feel like it’s a legitimate defense for some of my considerable shortcomings. Do you do that? Terry Kinney: Yeah, of course I do. I attribute my reactions, behavior, moods, to my Irishness or my Catholic upbringing, or my parents’ closed-mindedness, or their fears blah blah blah. It’s a handy way not to change ourselves. Not that DNA doesn’t play on us. My favorite thinker, James Hillman, talks about the “blueprint” that puts us into our destinies, on or off of our “paths.” Breaking imprinted and inherited traits is hard work, but it’s sure worth doing. We have a choice, yeah, but our instincts don’t always want us to, you know?

AS: That makes me think of the heart of the play. In the story, two of the young characters—brothers—are deeply affected by the relationship that their own father had with his brother even though they weren’t even born yet—they never saw it and [in this production] neither do we— and yet it’s the engine that drives them and much of what we do see. Sometimes I wonder if it’s just inevitable that we get recruited into the wars of our parents but then other times I think it’s not that mysterious and that there’s actual messaging throughout our lives that tells us who we are supposed to be or side with, essentially if we want to survive. Do you think it passes down magically? TK: Well, the father [Adam] carries the brutal memories of that relationship, and never really releases himself from the guilt he felt being loved by the father that

never loved his brother. So he also believes he deserved the hatred and violence his brother hurled at him. What the father carries, his sons absorb. It’s in their blood and in the air. They sponge his grief, and sadly the very thing Adam resented most in his own father—being the sole recipient of his love, is also passed along to his own sons, one of whom he can’t bring himself to love. Is this karmic, in some way, connected to a collective unconscious that messages our fates? Or are we born with this story imprinted in our bloodline? Our wars get passed along no matter the dark places we try to hide them, yeah. AS: Another huge thing the play is dealing with is the idea of good and evil, or, more accurately, good vs. evil. I must admit, this has been an obsession of mine for most of my life: not only do I constantly ask myself if I’m being “good,” I think I take comfort in the idea that life is that manageable, that it can be reduced to a simple binary equation. Is that idea present for you in your own life? TK: The mythos of good and, evil of course, follows all of us, and the pressures we carry from nature and nurture and whatever both guide and restrict our lives, I think. I like the Jungian idea of the white knight, the black knight and the red knight. The white knight has a very clear if narrow view of his path, based on the need to be purely “good”. He’s the knight running around saving everyone. The black knight is, well, Darth Vader comes to mind. He is all shadow and no light. The red knight is simply the white knight after swallowing his own shadow. That, to me, is human. Struggling, flawed, but conscious. I mostly struggle to be my real self, and carry that forward for better and for worse.

AS: I also wonder, bearing that all in mind, if you as a founder of the theater find it more complicated to return here to work. I’ve been thinking a lot about this idea of legacy as it relates to the play and quite frankly how it relates to us as company. I mean, we throw around the word “family” a lot—weirdly, I think people somehow think of it as a catch-all for all complicated relationships between people that to the outside world may seem untenable. I don’t feel like that about being a part of this company—maybe because I choose to be here so I feel like anything not-so-great that happens to me here is pretty much my responsibility. I’m less likely to be that mature when it comes to Sunday brunch at my mom’s. Do you feel freer here? More encumbered? Are there ghosts? TK: Oh. Ha ha there are ghosts for sure. Letting go of being an arbiter of the immediate destiny of this place left me looking for places to have that kind of input and influence. I sort of shifted myself. I never wanted to police the changes, the sizable changes at the core of the company. And I was never cut out in our company to simply follow. We started it to form it, develop it, grow it. I still have those strong impulses, so there was a letting go. It’s a child of mine, however grown up. But I think time has allowed me to look at it for what it is—what it has become, which is an entirely different place, one that I truly admire, am in awe of now. So that allows me to feel free in the rehearsal room as a trusted artist and a fellow traveler. I don’t know if I answered the question… AS: No, you did! And can I say how glad I am that you’re back? Ghosts and all.

The Steppenwolf Ensemble first began performing in the mid-1970s in the basement of

a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 40 years and Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 44 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf’s artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theater, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for groundbreaking, innovative work. That work is represented in production photos displayed throughout the theater.

3 The Flick By Annie Baker

Directed by Dexter Bullard

Forty years of unforgettable moments… and we’re just getting started.

John Steinbeck’s

1 East of Eden

Adapted by ensemble member Frank Galati

February 4 – May 8, 2016 From the author of The Aliens and Circle Mirror Transformation

Three underpaid employees sweep up stale popcorn in a run-down movie house called The Flick, one of the last theaters in Massachusetts still projecting 35mm films. For Avery, this isn’t a dead-end job. It’s a way to get closer to the art form he loves. Passionate debates about cinema lead to a friendship of sorts with co-workers Sam and Rose. But will their tentative bond survive as they reveal what they actually need from each other? The Flick is a heartfelt cry for the kind of authentic connection we all want, even if we’re a little afraid of it.

4 Mary Page Marlowe By ensemble member Tracy Letts

Directed by ensemble member and co-founder Terry Kinney

Directed by ensemble member Anna D. Shapiro

September 17 – November 15, 2015

March 31 – May 29, 2016

Featuring ensemble members Kate Arrington, Tim Hopper, Francis Guinan and Alan Wilder

Featuring ensemble member Alan Wilder

From the adaptor of As I Lay Dying, The March and The Grapes of Wrath

From the author of Killer Joe, Superior Donuts and August: Osage County

Escaping a turbulent past, Adam Trask is determined to make a new start in California’s Salinas Valley. Adam and his wife Cathy settle on a beautiful farm, and soon Cathy gives birth to twins Caleb and Aron. But family history, sibling rivalry and the impending danger of World War One will threaten their little piece of paradise. East of Eden is a sprawling and unflinching story that asks if it is possible to escape the mistakes of previous generations and choose your own course.

Mary Page Marlowe is an accountant from Ohio. She’s led an ordinary life, making the difficult decisions we all face as we try to figure out who we really are and what we really want. As Tracy Letts brings us moments—both pivotal and mundane—from Mary’s life, a portrait of a surprisingly complicated woman emerges. Intimate and moving, Mary Page Marlowe shows us how circumstance, impulse and time can combine to make us mysteries… even to ourselves.

2 Domesticated

Written and directed by ensemble member Bruce Norris Featuring ensemble member Tom Irwin

December 3, 2015 – February 7, 2016

5 Between Riverside and Crazy By Stephen Adly Guirgis

Directed by ensemble member Yasen Peyankov

Featuring ensemble members Tim Hopper and James Vincent Meredith

June 23 – August 21, 2016

From the author of The Pain and the Itch, The Qualms and Clybourne Park

From the author of Our Lady of 121st Street and The Motherf**ker with the Hat

Politician Bill Pulver faces the cameras to stumble his way through a carefully crafted apology as his wife Judy stands stoically behind him… but what is she REALLY thinking? We are about to find out in Bruce Norris’s wickedly funny, unpredictable play about a marriage burst apart by a sex scandal. This scathing, wildly entertaining play investigates gender politics, modern marriage and the sexual mysteries of the animal kingdom.

Ex-cop “Pops” Washington and his ex-con son Junior are barely holding on to one of the last great rent stabilized apartments in Manhattan. Pops has his hands (not to mention his apartment) full as he navigates a steady stream of sketchy houseguests and sweats out the impending verdict on his lawsuit against the police department. A celebration of the glorious contradictions that make up human nature, this rowdy dark comedy looks at the slippery nature of justice, and the grit it takes to finally move on.

The Foundation’s longstanding support for Steppenwolf for Young Adults provides broad access to artistically engaging and meaningful theater for thousands of Chicago youth and families each season. In 2015/16, Steppenwolf for Young Adults leads an important discussion about how art contributes to larger social concerns within our community, through thought-provoking productions of George Orwell’s 1984 and The Compass. We are proud to partner with the Alphawood Foundation in our shared commitment to the success of Chicago youth and their families.

Accessibility at Steppenwolf Committed to providing services and programming that enhance the experience of guests with disabilities, Steppenwolf is proud to feature: • Assistive listening devices in our Downstairs and Upstairs theaters. • Audio-described performances, artistic conversations and touch tours of the stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. • Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.

New! Induction loop in the Downstairs Theatre If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! With the help and expertise of Assistive Hearing Systems Ltd., we completed installation of an induction loop on both the main and balcony levels of our Downstairs Theatre in April. If you use the loop, we would love to hear about your experience—we’re still fine-tuning the system, and all feedback is helpful. Please ask any member of our customer service staff for a survey to complete, or email access@steppenwolf.org. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.

Lost or Found? On-site? Please check in with a member of the house staff. Already left? Call the Front of House office at 312-932-2445. Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance, fill out the 60-Second Survey inserted in this program or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheatre. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater ? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@steppenwolf.org. Need to contact a patron during a performance? If you need to contact a patron during a performance in our Downstairs or Upstairs Theaters, please call our Concierge Desk at 312-932-2476. Hours: one hour prior to curtain until 15 minutes after curtain call.

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. The theater reserves the right to limit admission of children younger than the age of six. The taking of photographs and the use of any type of recording device is not allowed in the theater during performances and is a violation of state and federal copyright laws. Digital media will be deleted, and tape or film will be confiscated.
