WELCOME TO FAMILIAR I am so proud to welcome you to Familiar by Danai Gurira, a play of great warmth and breadth by a writer whose voice is changing the landscape of American Theatre. A deeply personal work, Familiar carries with it both the popular trope of an immigrant family’s challenges with their new world and the more rare exploration of a legacy so alive that it threatens to pull them all back home. Here at Steppenwolf, we are well versed in the dysfunctional American family play—one could say we made our bones telling the stories of the disenfranchised, blue collar, middle-American white folks whose stories have lit the imagination of this company for decades. American Realism, which has its roots firmly in the exploration of the failings of a capitalist culture as articulated thru the American family, has always been our métier, our calling and our home. How incredible then to be able to celebrate with this production another kind of American family; one whose own history reaches beyond our borders, both geographic and societal, and whose dynamics are made all the more lush and complicated because of it.

The Chinyaramwira’s past walks alongside each of them in different ways as they struggle, like any family, to hold together their individual ideas of what belonging to something really means. What Danai understands (and shares) so beautifully is how what once kept us alive can so quickly become our prison and that, in a family, one cannot go where the others won’t follow. We have to share the story of our shared past if we are to be able to share the wish for our independent future. Our country is stronger and more vital for the multitude of stories it holds as it embraces and welcomes the narratives of other cultures. Steppenwolf will always be a home for these stories and we are grateful to the artists and audiences that join us, and teach us, on this journey. Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director

Danya: My way into the play is through my relationship to my mom, it definitely reminds me of Nyasha’s relationship to her mother. Part of the reason directing this play thrilled me so much is that to work on it feels like composing a love letter to my mom, and really my whole family. We definitely love and fight in a similar way to the Chinyaramwiras.

Celeste: I connect to this story in many different ways, which is so exciting as an actor because it lays out a nice blueprint to build off of. These are some strong, powerful, and super complex characters much like some of my own family members. For example Donald’s compassion reminds me a lot of my mother, Auntie Maggie’s constant support and hustle reminds me of one of my sisters, Brad’s demeanor reminds me of a few people, and the list goes on. These connections make the play personal and familiar to me. Personally, I feel the strongest connection with Tendi and Nyasha in my real life. Nyasha and I are both the youngest, we share artistic qualities, and the desire to become more in touch with our ancestral backgrounds. I love Nyasha’s bold approach to seeking knowledge about her heritage. Oh and I don’t do feng shui… well not yet, but I am all about bringing good energy to a space. Another thing I love about this play is that it’s a play about sisters. I am extremely close with my older sisters to the point that it breaks my heart when I hear people say they don’t get along with their siblings. Although there is lots of drama in this story, as in any family… there is also a lot of love. This family really loves each other. So the love and the sister dynamics really grab me.

Through the specificity and open vulnerability and humor with which she writes these characters and shares their story, she has captured the essence of what it is to be part of a family. I think that Familiar will also cause some audience members to question who they think they can relate to and why they might feel like they are different from another human being. That there is no need to “other” people because we’re all human, here in a space together.

Celeste: Oh yes... I agree with everything Danya said. This is such a human story. Danai did an excellent job writing three dimensional characters, that I don’t think you can just identify with only one of them. A white middle class audience member might identify more with the middle to upper class Zimbabwean characters Marvelous and Donald, or perhaps their Zimbabwean American kids versus the white lower class characters Brad and Chris. Unlike other plays with a cast like ours, race is not the focus of Danai’s beautiful play. There are so many things an audience member can connect with. For instance, the romantic relationship between Tendi and Chris, which is so strong and real and central to the play. The beauty of a relationship is being with someone who is nothing like you, coming from two different worlds and finding the joy and love in that. They’re encouraging, exposing, and helping each other be the best versions of themselves. It’s true throughout the show, but especially with that couple. Love conquers all. Being exposed to different mindsets is a beautiful thing.

THE STEPPENWOLF ENSEMBLE Steppenwolf Theatre Company is the nation’s premier ensemble theater. Formed by a collective of actors in 1976, the ensemble of 53 members represent a remarkable crosssection of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling and powerful productions from Balm in Gilead to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf produces hundreds of performances and events annually in its three spaces: the 515-seat Downstairs Theatre, the 299-seat Upstairs Theatre and the 80-seat 1700 Theatre. Artistic programing includes a seven-play season; a twoplay Steppenwolf for Young Adults season; Visiting Company engagements; and LookOut, a multi-genre performance series. Education initiatives include the nationally recognized work of Steppenwolf for Young Adults, which engages 15,000 participants annually from Chicago’s diverse communities; the esteemed School at Steppenwolf; and Professional Leadership Programs for arts administration training. While firmly grounded in the Chicago community, nearly 40 original Steppenwolf productions have enjoyed success both nationally and internationally, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, London, Sydney, Galway and Dublin.

Accessibility at Steppenwolf Committed to providing services and programming that enhance the experience of guests with disabilities, Steppenwolf is proud to feature: • Assistive listening devices in our Downstairs, Upstairs and 1700 theaters. • Audio-described performances, artistic conversations and touch tours of the stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. • Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre
If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby.
hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help. Lost or Found? On-site? Please check in with a member of the house staff. Already left? Call the Front of House office at 312-932-2445. Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheatre. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@ steppenwolf.org.
Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance
Need to contact a patron during a performance? If you need to contact a patron during a performance in our Downstairs or Upstairs Theaters, please call our Concierge Desk at 312-932-2476. Hours: one hour prior to curtain until 15 minutes after curtain call.
