WELCOME TO FAMILIAR I am so proud to welcome you to Familiar by Danai Gurira, a play of great warmth and breadth by a writer whose voice is changing the landscape of American Theatre. A deeply personal work, Familiar carries with it both the popular trope of an immigrant family’s challenges with their new world and the more rare exploration of a legacy so alive that it threatens to pull them all back home. Here at Steppenwolf, we are well versed in the dysfunctional American family play—one could say we made our bones telling the stories of the disenfranchised, blue collar, middle-American white folks whose stories have lit the imagination of this company for decades. American Realism, which has its roots firmly in the exploration of the failings of a capitalist culture as articulated thru the American family, has always been our métier, our calling and our home. How incredible then to be able to celebrate with this production another kind of American family; one whose own history reaches beyond our borders, both geographic and societal, and whose dynamics are made all the more lush and complicated because of it.

The Chinyaramwira’s past walks alongside each of them in different ways as they struggle, like any family, to hold together their individual ideas of what belonging to something really means. What Danai understands (and shares) so beautifully is how what once kept us alive can so quickly become our prison and that, in a family, one cannot go where the others won’t follow. We have to share the story of our shared past if we are to be able to share the wish for our independent future. Our country is stronger and more vital for the multitude of stories it holds as it embraces and welcomes the narratives of other cultures. Celeste M. Cooper (Nyasha) is one of Steppenwolf’s newest ensemble members and performed in Steppenwolf’s world premiere productions of BLKS and The Doppelgänger (an international farce). Other theatre credits include: Barbecue (Strawdog Theatre); Blues for an Alabama Sky (Court Theatre), Measure for Measure (Goodman Theatre); Stick Fly (Windy City Playhouse); Never the Sinner (Victory Gardens Theater); The Mecca Tales (Chicago Dramatists); Our Lady of 121st Street, Ruined (Eclipse Theatre Company); and her original one woman shows Fight 4 Your Life, and later The Incredible Cece (MPAACT and Stage 773). Danai Gurira (Playwright) is an award-winning playwright and actress. As a playwright, her works include In the Continuum (OBIE Award, Outer Critics Award, Helen Hayes Award), Eclipsed (Tony Award Nomination: Best Play; NAACP Award; Helen Hayes Award: Best New Play; Connecticut Critics Circle Award: Outstanding Production of a Play), and The Convert (six Ovation Awards, Los Angeles Outer Critics Award). Her newest play, Familiar, received its world premiere at Yale Rep in 2015, and premiered in New York at Playwrights Horizons in February of 2016. She is a recipient of the Sam Norkin Award at the 2016 Drama Desk Awards, a Whiting Award, a Hodder Fellow, and has been commissioned by Yale Rep, Center Theatre Group, Playwrights Horizons, and the Royal Court. As an actor, Gurira was most recently seen in Marvel’s blockbuster phenomenon Black Panther as “General Okoye” and reprised the role in another blockbuster sensation Avengers: Infinity War in April 2018. Gurira currently stars as “Michonne” on AMC’s The Walking Dead (NAACP Image Award nomination). Other select acting credits include the films All Eyez on Me (NAACP Image Award nomination), The Visitor, Mother of George and the NYS&F’s Measure for Measure (Equity Callaway Award.) Gurira is currently adapting Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s book Americanah into a miniseries. Justin Ellington (Sound Design and Musical Direction) is elated to make his Steppenwolf Theatre Company debut with Familiar. She is known for her wide-ranging vocal technique, her original blend of modern jazz with African musics, and the innate poetry of her songwriting that often gives voice to issues of social justice, transnationalism, womanhood and global constructions of Blackness. Her latest recording, Petite Afrique (Sony/ OKeh), marks her sixth release. Recently winning a 2018 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album, it is a timely song cycle about the dignity of immigrants and the gentrification of Harlem’s vibrant West African quarter. Her guest collaborators on her albums include Common, Angelique Kidjo, Hugh Masekela and Aloe Blacc. Somi is a TED Senior Fellow, a 2018 Doris Duke USA Fellow, an inaugural Association of Performing Arts Presenters Fellow and former Artistin-Residence at Park Avenue Armory, Baryshnikov Arts Center and UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance. Currently, Somi is touring internationally with her band while developing a modern jazz play about the legendary singer-activist Miriam Makeba that will premiere in Fall 2018. David Schmitz (Executive Director) has worked at Steppenwolf Theatre Company for 12 years, serving in the roles of Director of Finance and Administration, General Manager and currently as Executive

Director. Prior to working at Steppenwolf, David was the General Manager at Lookingglass Theatre Company, Associate Artistic Director of Stage Left Theatre and Business Manager at the entertainment agency Adair Performance. Currently, he serves as Vice President of the Board for The House Theatre of Chicago as well as on the boards of the League of Chicago Theatres and Arts Alliance Illinois. David is a former board member for the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce and has worked as a strategic planning, business practices, finance and hiring consultant for numerous Chicago organizations, including The House Theatre of Chicago, The Hypocrites and Stage Left Theatre, among others. He holds a BA in theatre from the University of Northern Colorado, an MFA from the Theatre Conservatory at the Chicago College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University and a Certificate in Non Profit Management from Roosevelt University.

Danya: My way into the play is through my relationship to my mom, it definitely reminds me of Nyasha’s relationship to her mother. Part of the reason directing this play thrilled me so much is that to work on it feels like composing a love letter to my mom, and really my whole family. We definitely love and fight in a similar way to the Chinyaramwiras.

Celeste: I connect to this story in many different ways, which is so exciting as an actor because it lays out a nice blueprint to build off of. These are some strong, powerful, and super complex characters much like some of my own family members. For example Donald’s compassion reminds me a lot of my mother, Auntie Maggie’s constant support and hustle reminds me of one of my sisters, Brad’s demeanor reminds me of a few people, and the list goes on. These connections make the play personal and familiar to me. Personally, I feel the strongest connection with Tendi and Nyasha in my real life. Both Tendi and I are spiritual versus religious, we don’t curse in our day to

day life, we’re mindful about romantic relationships, and we’re focused and responsible individuals. Nyasha and I are both the youngest, we share artistic qualities, and the desire to become more in touch with our ancestral backgrounds. I love Nyasha’s bold approach to seeking knowledge about her heritage. Oh and I don’t do feng shui… well not yet, but I am all about bringing good energy to a space. Another thing I love about this play is that it’s a play about sisters. I am extremely close with my older sisters to the point that it breaks my heart when I hear people say they don’t get along with their siblings. Although there is lots of drama in this story, as in any family… there is also a lot of love. This family really loves each other. So the love and the sister dynamics really grab me.

Greta: Can you talk a bit about how you personally connect to the characters and the story?

Celeste: Oh yes... I agree with everything Danya said. This is such a human story. Danai did an excellent job writing three dimensional characters, that I don’t think you can just identify with only one of them. A white middle class audience member might identify more with the middle to upper class Zimbabwean characters Marvelous and Donald, or perhaps their Zimbabwean American kids versus the white lower class characters Brad and Chris. Unlike other plays with a cast like ours, race is not the focus of Danai’s beautiful play. There are so many things an audience member can connect with. For instance, the romantic relationship between Tendi and Chris, which is so strong and real and central to the play. The beauty of a relationship is being with someone who is nothing like you, coming from two different worlds and finding the joy and love in that. They’re encouraging, exposing, and helping each other be the best versions of themselves. It’s true throughout the show, but especially with that couple. Love conquers all. Being exposed to different mindsets is a beautiful thing.
