Welcome to The Fundamentals
When I was 14-years-old, I got my first job. It was at an ice cream parlor near our house and I lied about my age. I worked over-long shifts, ate ice cream for dinner and sometimes stole three dollars out of the cash register just to see what it felt like. I got the job not because I needed the money—at 14, I had a small allowance and my dad worked and we lived in a kind-of-big house in southeast Evanston. I got the job because that’s what all my friends did, at least most of them, and we had parents who believed working was important and we wanted to go to the movies and buy record albums as soon as they came out and they certainly wouldn’t (or maybe in my case, couldn’t) pay for that. I have had a job ever since. Literally. I worked my way through college and grad school, at times holding three jobs at a time. I remember one particularly challenging summer before grad school when I would fall asleep on my parents’ bed and dream I was working until the alarm would go off and I would wake up, somehow back in my own bed, and it would be dark and the day would start over again and then weeks would have gone by. I look back on those times with great fondness and sometimes even great longing—when things were simpler and my story unwritten, with nothing but possibility and adventure ahead. And why wouldn’t I? I was never in any danger. Nothing, other than the rate of my own mobility, was ever at stake. In the internal logic peculiar to the privileged, all of those hours at the IHOP and those shifts at Limited Express would lead me here, to the job I have now. To the security, to the voice and even to the power that I have now. Or they wouldn’t. I never really had to worry much either way. But Millie does have to worry. In Erika Sheffer’s insightful and funny new play, The Fundamentals, Millie’s internal logic must always take into account the outside world; one that has proven to her again and again that she is profoundly, inexorably on her own. Through Millie, Sheffer tracks the always complex and often futile challenge of both playing the game and surviving it, the apparent choice between being a good person or a successful one and how the rules can change based on your race, gender or class. Struggling to make a go of it with both a problematic partner and an indifferent boss, Millie has to constantly negotiate the things she wants with everyone else’s idea of how she should go about wanting them. For Millie, there is no net—emotional or financial— and the decisions she makes affect not only her own life but that of her child. That she still cares how she moves through a world that values her and her struggles so little is a testament to her character; that in the end she makes decisions some people may question is proof of the extremity her conditions can create. The Fundamentals Bios Alana Arenas (Millie) joined
the Steppenwolf Theatre Company ensemble in 2007 and created the role of Pecola Breedlove for Steppenwolf for Young Adults’ production of The Bluest Eye, which also played at the New Victory Theater Off-Broadway. She recently appeared in Marie Antoinette, Tribes, Belleville, Head of Passes, Good People, Three Sisters, The March, Man in Love, Middletown, The Hot L Baltimore, The Etiquette of Vigilance, The Brother/Sister Plays, The Tempest, The Crucible, Spare Change, and The Sparrow Project(Steppenwolf Theatre Company); Disgraced (American Theater Company); and The Arabian Nights (Lookingglass Theatre Company, Berkeley Repertory Theatre and Kansas City Repertory Theatre). Other theater credits include Eyes (eta Creative Arts); SOST (MPAACT); WVON (Black Ensemble Theater); and Hecuba (Chicago Shakespeare Theater). Alan Wilder (Abe) has been
an ensemble member since 1976 and has appeared in nearly 70 Steppenwolf productions. If memory served, he would give a full account of his impressive stage and screen credits here but space in this program is probably too limited. Also, all records of Mr. Wilder’s professional biography have been stolen by the Russians.
Erika Sheffer (Playwright) is thrilled to be returning to Steppenwolf Theatre Company for the world premiere of The Fundamentals. Russian Transport was produced at The New Group (Outer Critics Circle nomination) before receiving its regional premiere at Steppenwolf. Erika’s plays have been developed at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, The New Group, The Vineyard and Ars Nova. Original pieces performed at Upright Citizens Brigade and Dixon Place. She is a recipient of The Vineyard’s Paula Vogel Playwriting Award and an alumna of SPACE on Ryder Farm and Ars Nova Playgroup. Her work has been commissioned by Steppenwolf Theatre Company and The Geffen Playhouse. Her play Russian Transport is published by Dramatists Play Service. Erika received her BFA from Syracuse University. “For Andrew and Hazel, always.” Yasen Peyankov (Director)
has been an ensemble member since 2002. Previous Steppenwolf directing credits include Between Riverside and Crazy, Grand Concourse, Russian Transport, Hushabye for First Look and The Glass Menagerie for Steppenwolf for Young Adults. He also translated and directed the Bulgarian premiere of August: Osage County at the National Theatre in Sofia. On stage he has appeared in 18 productions at Steppenwolf, as well as productions at Goodman Theatre, Court Theatre, European Repertory (which he
co-founded), Next Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco and made his Broadway debut in Superior Donuts in 2009. Some of his many film and television appearances include A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, Contagion, Transformers 3, Crime Fiction, The Company, The Mob Doctor, The Beast, Gifted Hands, Karen Sisco, Alias, The Practice, The Unit, Numb3rs and currently he has a recurring role on Madam Secretary. He has also translated and adapted Russian plays by Anton Chekhov, Mikhail Bulgakov, Nikolai Kolyada, Alexander Galin and Vassily Sigarev all of them developed into productions. He is the recipient of a Jeff Award, Fox Fellowship and is the Head of Theatre at the School of Theatre and Music at UIC where he teaches acting and directs plays.

Anna D. Shapiro (Artistic Director) joined the Steppenwolf ensemble in 2005 and was awarded the 2008 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for August: Osage County
(Steppenwolf, Broadway, London). She was nominated in 2011 in the same category for The Motherf**ker with the Hat (Public Theatre, Labyrinth Theater). Other directing credits at Steppenwolf include Visiting Edna, Mary Page Marlowe, Three Sisters, A Parallelogram, Up, The Crucible, The Unmentionables (also at Yale Repertory Theatre), The Pain and the Itch (also in New York), I Never Sang for My Father, Man from Nebraska, Purple Heart (also in Galway, Ireland), The Drawer Boy, Side Man (also in Ireland, Australia and Vail, Colorado), Three Days of Rain, The Infidel and This is Our Youth (which transferred to Broadway). David Schmitz (Executive Director) has worked at Steppenwolf Theatre Company for 11 years, serving in the role of Director of Finance and Administration, General Manager and currently as Executive Director. Prior to working at Steppenwolf, David was the General Manager at Lookingglass Theatre Company, Associate Artistic Director of Stage Left Theatre and Business Manager at the entertainment agency Adair Performance. Currently, he serves as Vice President of the Board for The House Theatre of Chicago as well as on the boards of the League of Chicago Theatres and Arts Alliance Illinois. David is a former board member for the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce and has worked as a strategic planning, business practices, finance and hiring consultant for numerous Chicago organizations, including The House Theatre of Chicago, The Hypocrites and Stage Left Theatre, among others. He holds a BA in theatre from the University of Northern Colorado, an MFA from the Theatre Conservatory at the Chicago College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University and a Certificate in Non Profit Management from Roosevelt University. like Millie. When you are in your thirties, when you have kids, there’s just more to balance. I definitely connect to that feeling of loving your family, but also really desiring professional success.

Ian Barford: And it’s not as if everyone agrees on what makes a successful play. The rules are unspoken, and conflicting. I find it interesting the way in which good playwriting has a kind of musical quality. There are many playwrights, Mamet for one, where he really prefers that his work be shared in a distinct way. He says, “This is how it works best,” and you hear it in a certain way. In your writing do you find that there are approaches you prefer, or do you feel it’s open to interpretation?
Aaron Carter: The Fundamentals takes
place in a boutique hotel, and Erika, I remember you mentioning that you worked for a long time at a similar place. I wonder, apart from drawing on your own experience in the boutique hotel world, if there other ways in which The Fundamentals resonates for you in a personal way?
Erika Sheffer: Definitely. For one thing,
I purposefully made Millie a child of immigrants. There’s something about having to move in a new world, when you don’t grow up with parents who can teach you the rules. Millie’s parents didn’t go to college; she didn’t have a model of how to navigate the educational system or how to

move up in a corporate environment. As a first generation American, I very much relate to that—there are often times in my life where I think, “Oh, I’m not quite a part of this.” Of course I recognize that it could just be my perception, but I do think that when you or your parents are not from this country, there’s often a pause where we have to think, “Wait, what are the customs? What are the rules, here?” You end up having to figure them out on your own. That feeling of otherness is a significant part of Millie’s background. I also connect with Millie as a mother who has to reconcile her ambition with family. I meet so many young playwrights who seem to have come out of the womb and knowing, “I’m a playwright!” But I wasn’t like that. I didn’t start writing until my late 20s, so that makes me a bit of a late bloomer, much
ES: I’ve never met a playwright who felt
that way (laughs). Kidding aside, I feel it’s a mix between walking into the room and relinquishing, but also hopefully, guiding towards your original intent with a line or a character. The thing about a new play is that it’s not Tennessee Williams, it’s not Chekhov. Nobody knows the rules, walking in. Nobody knows what this is supposed to look or sound like. So, with a new play it’s always a discovery between the playwright and the director and the actors of, “Well, what is this thing?” or, “What’s this playwright’s style or voice?” and we all have to figure that out in the room, together.

IB: Actors have a varying degree of selfawareness and bring different things into the room. I think that, for some actors, finding the truth is all they should be worried about. With other actors, by way of their natural
approach to it, they don’t really have to worry about finding the truth because it comes to them organically. There’s an actor in the ensemble, who will remain unnamed, who is just a brilliant actor and he does not have to be concerned about finding the truth. He’s always in the truth, it’s there, it’s present and in the moment. But I’ve worked with him many, many times and I know what he does is, during the process of rehearsing and even during the performances, he’s listening for the musicality of the language. Sometimes it is simply a matter of making sense of the words. Being present, being clear, and delivering the language in such a way that the audience is taking in the story in a fluid way. Does writing fluid language come effortlessly to you? ES: No, not at all. It takes me awhile to click
into who the characters are and what their voices are. Most often, I will write a lot of material, which I then throw away. For example, on The Fundamentals, there was a full draft that I just had to toss because I realized I wasn’t finding the right thing— so I went back to page 1.
IB: Heartbreak. ES: It’s rough. It’s hard to say, “This is not
going to be a play.” I have to think of that work as something that brought me closer to the play.
IB: Are there times when an actor finds something in your text that surprises you? Do you ever think “Oh wow, I didn’t hear that when I wrote it… I didn’t hear that way of reading it.”

Ora Jones ES: My favorite moments in a rehearsal
room are when an actor takes what you write and surprises you with how they elevate the work. I especially love it when an actor gets a laugh on a line that I didn’t know was a laugh—what a joy! It’s the best when you can sit in the room and watch actors do their magic.
IB: I’m very excited to see your show. I
said to Yasen, “I’ve both been in and seen many many many plays with Al Wilder over the years and I’ve enjoyed his work very much.” I really appreciated him in Russian Transport—I just thought he was so dropped in and I was able to see him in a more brutal way. He was relaxed and he was a man and he was strong and he was himself—still touching, not pushing for anything—just beautifully present. It was a wonderful performance. Everybody was great in that, actually. ES: Yes, Al is fantastic, really strong, but also
brings this vulnerability to it. I am so glad to have him on board for The Fundamentals. And Alana Arenas and Caroline Neff bring so much to the table, as well. In our workshop process over the summer they were so nuanced, and again, vulnerable, without sacrificing their toughness. I feel lucky to be working with this director and this cast— they make my work better.
JB: But as a playwright, so much of the magic is built into the text and simply lives on the page. ES: Totally. Actually, I just recently re-read
A Streetcar Named Desire.
IB: Oh my God what a play. ES: It’s amazing. IB: The language in that play is unfettered, but so grounded. The resonance of that play is just astounding. ES: It’s the words, absolutely, but I think
the thing that people tend to overlook is its craft. The structure of the story builds and builds and builds and there’s that moment of hope—and then the hope is dashed! That takes enormous skill.
IB: That’s true mastery. Williams’ work is such a full experience. His playwriting is poetry. It’s primal and scary and dynamic and sexy and dangerous and Greek and internal—I’m astonished at the breadth of his expression—it’s so full! I don’t know how anybody could want anything more in a play. ES: He’s it for me. AC: And guys, I’m going to have to say this is it for us! Thank you both for sharing your time and thoughts with us. I, for one, have to go home and re-visit Streetcar tonight!

What brought you to Steppenwolf?
The first show I did at Steppenwolf was Morning Star, directed by Frank Galati. I was fortunate enough to be cast in other shows there that had a great impact on my life and career, like The Violet Hour and The Unmentionables. Then in December 2006, Martha Lavey invited me to join the ensemble.
Which role, at Steppenwolf or elsewhere, gave you the most joy?
This is always an impossible question for me to answer. Each project has its own significance, and lessons, and each project brings its own definition of joy or happiness. You cannot name, at the outset, what the end result will be, but it often seems that the correct project shows up at the correct time.
Which role do you wish you could do again, or do you have a dream role?
There is always something, a scene, a moment. Sometimes you want to work on it again, and sometimes you just want to revisit it for a while, to remember the joy. Some new thought or distant memory, an event that seemed insignificant at the time, all of these can suddenly become relevant. As for a dream role, I can’t really name one. There is so much out there to know and experience. I have a feeling that if I’d gotten everything I said I wanted, at the time I said I wanted it, I would not have gotten even half the opportunities I have been fortunate enough to receive.
When you come back to your artistic home at Steppenwolf, what is one of your favorite spots to visit in Chicago?
The lake, the lake always the lake. It clears my mind, it wipes away stress and confusion. I just feel better, even when I’m simply seeing it from a bus on the Drive. Chicago is a very lucky town, to have something that beautiful, so close.
What’s next for you?
Right now I am working on Lés Liaisons Dangereuses, for the Booth Theater in New York, with Josie Rourke directing. I first worked with Josie in a production of Twelfth Night for Chicago Shakespeare Theater. I’m a huge fan of hers, and it’s an amazing opportunity. Very, very grateful. 16 Features

Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels fo the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops, installed with the help and expertise of Assistive Hearing Systems Ltd. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. The theater reserves the right to limit admission of children younger than the age of six. The taking of photographs and the use of any type of recording device is not allowed in the theater during performances and is a violation of state and federal copyright laws. Digital media will be deleted, and tape or film will be confiscated.
