“ In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene Only then I am human Only then I am clean” – Hozier

As I began this welcome letter, I felt a wave of emotions go through me. For the last twenty years, this space has been reserved for Martha Lavey, whose thoughts never fail to stimulate intellectual conversation, encouraging our viewing of a play as a bridge to exploring our humanity. I would read these letters right before curtain, marveling at her wit and passion, feeling prepared for the journey I was about to embark on. In a humble attempt to follow Martha’s singular example, I’d like to welcome you to the world of Grand Concourse. It’s a world that consummately reflects its creator, playwright Heidi Schreck. In initial conversations, I found Heidi to be very direct, charmingly open, and possessing of a great collaborative spirit—attributes that mark her clearly as Steppenwolf material. Heidi is also a very good actor, a fact that is apparent in her conflicted and complex characters that compel both actors and audiences. Heidi’s plays are funny, sharp and driven by keenly observed human behavior. Spirituality is a theme that recurs in her plays; her stories often center on characters struggling to live up to their ideals. Finally, Heidi has a knack for finding the humor at the heart of that struggle—she approaches character foibles with empathy, yes, but also with a dry wit. Grand Concourse was inspired by

4 WELCOME

the memory of what Heidi called an act of “reckless generosity.” Her parents lent money to a family friend, who promptly squandered it in Las Vegas. But when that friend asked to borrow more money to get back home, they didn’t punish the friend or leverage a promise for changed behavior. Instead, her parents wired it to him without hesitation. As the young daughter in a financially struggling family, Heidi was first angered by her parents for wasting resources that could go to her approaching college, and then awed by her parents example of forgiveness. Grand Concourse interrogates the nature of this kind of generosity—generosity that ignores the risk of personal damage—and questions whether that generosity is actually beneficial to either the giver or receiver. That inquiry lives primarily in the character of Shelley, a nun who takes a nononsense approach to her work running a soup kitchen on Grand Concourse in the Bronx. After fifteen years of faith and service, Shelley is questioning the efficacy of what she has chosen to do with her life. The very purpose of Shelley’s vocation is giving, but Shelley wonders if she has anything left to give. I think it is this theme of service that first drew Martha to the play. Martha believes deeply in the value of public

service and appreciates the unsentimental approach that Grand Concourse takes to investigating its costs and benefits. When Martha asked me to direct the final slot of the season, she suggested I consider Grand Concourse. “I think it is a great play, but of course you can choose something else you feel passionate about, just please nothing Slavic,” she joked. I read it in one sitting and I was sold. It was indeed a great play for Steppenwolf. I was attracted to the fragility of its four characters and the complexity of their approach to life. They are all good, purpose-driven people, but they are misguided, led astray by their ambitions and their desires. When faced with these challenging contradictions, they take comfort in the lies they have invented for themselves and others—just like my favorite “Slavic” characters from Chekhov. Oscar—one of those flawed characters— is a jocular security guard working his way through community college. Though he is on hand primarily to police high school vandals and rein in unruly patrons, he dreams of securing a better job and building a family with his girlfriend. But, like so many of us, his actions frequently subvert those intentions. We see another kind of fragility in Frog, a former intellectual now living on the streets, who has made himself very comfortably at home in the soup kitchen. Frog presents himself as a radical bohemian, a man who has consciously sacrificed conventional living in pursuit of authentic experience. But in other moments, we see that mask of bravado slip and we glimpse a personal struggle indicating that, perhaps his lifestyle is not entirely voluntary. Shelley, Oscar and Frog struggle with

their circumstances, but rarely make any kind of tangible progress. They might continue in this limbo if not for the arrival of Emma, a college dropout who comes to the soup kitchen looking to make a positive difference. At first, we seem to be witnessing a familiar story: a young person full of innocent energy whose naïve enthusiasm generates a spark of new life for people deadened by routine. But as the relationships in the play develop, something much more challenging emerges. We carry the belief that selflessness is a virtue. And yet, when you give without regard to personal risk, you leave yourself vulnerable and are bound to be hurt. Therefore the partner to reckless generosity must be forgiveness: the conscious choice to release the resentment one holds towards the person who has wronged you. Popular culture is taken with the notion that forgiveness is how we transcend the harm done to us. But is that actually the case? As these four characters collide, Grand Concourse asks if forgiveness is the only path to healing, or are there times when it stands in the way of our moving on? Thank you for being here tonight, I hope you enjoy our play. And Martha, I can’t wait for the day you read these words just before the lights dim. This one is for you.

Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth located in the nation of Oceania, part of a vast empire in a constant, shifting war against other superstates. Dissent is not tolerated (not even in thought), and Winston and his fellow citizens are under perpetual electronic surveillance by their ever-watchful ruler Big Brother. When Winston falls in love with a coworker, their illegal affair pushes them to rebel and face the darkest and most dangerous corners of the regime. On the heels of last year’s gripping Animal Farm, Steppenwolf for Young Adults presents Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece in a multi-media production that is a haunting, shockingly timely look at a future that seems disturbingly present.

The Compass

Devised and directed by Michael Rohd February 24 – March 12, 2016 Do you constantly second guess yourself? Do you always procrastinate? How would you feel if you never had to make a decision again? Meet The Compass, a brand-new app aimed at young people that does the heavy lifting on your daily thinking. The Compass is a groundbreaking, live interactive performance that explores the intersection of technology and decision-making. Join us as we (and you) navigate the question: When someone else, or something else, tells you what to do, what exactly are you responsible for? This is not a play. It is an experience.

SYA hosted a series of free events, titled Project Compass, throughout the 2014/15 Season aimed at engaging theater audiences to dialogue about what goes into making a decision and how we are each guided by our own moral compass. These events which will continue until the show premieres, serve as fodder for the world premiere of The Compass.

Concourse, the largest street in the Bronx, was originally designed to be even grander than Paris’s ChampsÉlysées—yet it runs through what is now our country’s poorest urban county. Why this setting for the play?

with my parents. It was a big part of my childhood, and I thought it would be an interesting place to set a play. I also worked for social justice organizations when I first moved to New York, and I found it fascinating that the people who came to volunteer, including me, were looking for nourishment as much as the people who were coming to receive the services. And they can be kind of crazy, screwed up environments. People have very complicated motives for doing good. And I wanted to explore that.

of grand designs when I named it. I worked at a soup kitchen in the Bronx called POTS (Part Of The Solution), which was started by a group of Catholic nuns and priests but has evolved into a secular community service organization. It’s right near Grand Concourse. I put that on as a temporary name and then I liked it. One definition of “Concourse” is a coming together of people. And then of course it’s a huge avenue, something you can move from one place to another on. But its original meaning is a sort of grand meeting. YASEN PEYANKOV : I love how

deceiving the title is. It has something very large in scope about it. When I first read the play, I didn’t know it was connected to this huge boulevard. It just felt like an intimate play with grand emotions inside. DP : And within this grandness there’s

a soup kitchen. Can you tell us about this setting?

YP : I grew up in a Socialist country, where I never encountered the kind of need I found when I came to the U.S., the richest country in the world. Then for a few years, I had a theater company in residence at 615 West Wellington, United Church of Christ. There was a homeless shelter downstairs where the kitchen was, so it functioned as a soup kitchen as well. There’s something about the soup kitchen being in the “belly” of the church, you know? This manifests in our design: the outline of a church with stunning mural windows and then, in the belly, the lower depths. HS : I love that! DP : The play’s soup kitchen is run

in part by Catholic activist Dorothy Day, who famously said, “The Gospel has taken away our right forever to distinguish between the deserving and the undeserving poor.” For Day, giving is something we just ought to do. Should we choose who deserves help? Or should giving be truly generous? HS : I find it a very profound statement

to say that it’s not our job to decide who is deserving and who is not. Part of Shelley’s struggle is just learning whether what she’s offering, for example, to Emma is actually help or not. That’s a question that’s alive in the play for Shelley, that maybe there are other ways of doing good in the world than the one she’s committed her life to. YP : I was stunned by that quote.

Nobody makes a choice to be poor. But if we’re talking about need, some people have desperate needs and you try to help, but sometimes it makes things worse. So how do you make that call? DP : And how do you balance looking after yourself with the kind of altruism that is at the heart of this play? HS : There is certainly value in

questioning the most effective way to do good for others and for ourselves. There is true generosity, and there is altruism that comes out of avoiding a

reckoning with ourselves. In Day’s book it’s clear that she also struggled with this and was constantly questioning her own motives for devoting her life to others less fortunate than she was. DP : Day also wrote, “We must talk about poverty because people insulated by their own comfort lose sight of it.” This reminds me of something Joel Berg, Executive Director of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger, recently wrote: the 53 wealthiest New Yorkers have as much money as 17 million minimum wage workers. Does this kind of wealth blind people to the needs of others? HS : The wealth gap is the largest it’s

been since the Great Depression. Absolutely that insulation happens. There have been lots of studies about how the more you have, the more protected you are, the greater effort you have to make to experience empathy for other people. It’s in our nature to believe that we have the things we have because we earned them, overlooking a lot of what has been given to us. YP : This brings us back to the social

context of the play, about the haves and have-nots. The line that sticks in my head, after Emma has served her first meal, “So much need,” puts into context the times we are living in.

DP : The play deals in an unusual, but provocative and exciting way, with the question of what it means to forgive.

interested in how hard it is to even figure out how to live an ethical life and then how complicated it is to enact.

HS : That’s the biggest question of the

DP : Yasen, how does this play resonate with your interests?

play for me. I’m an agnostic now, but I grew up in a Presbyterian household with loving, generous parents who taught me forgiveness as a default setting. It was only when I got older that I realized I didn’t know, when I was forgiving people or attempting to forgive myself, if I was actually doing it. I understood that I was supposed to, but I realized I didn’t understand exactly what it meant.

YP : There’s always one defining factor when I decide to do a play. It’s the humanity of the piece. And this one’s oozing with humanity. And it’s the first play I’ve read that has almost no punctuation. It has such a freedom about it; you start to create your own music. And it has conflict and secrets and betrayals and a really unexpected turn at the end. So what’s not to like?

YP : That’s what really fascinated me about the play. It’s about the boundaries of forgiveness, and how flexible and stretchable those boundaries are. HS : I think there’s something to

acknowledging that it’s a much harder, thornier process than it might seem. Forgiveness is a process. And it’s actually a very rigorous, difficult, painful one. DP : How do the questions this play raises connect with larger things you’re asking as an artist? HS : I’m interested, here and in my other

plays, in the gulf between the desire to live a “good life” and the practicality of what that actually means, in that space between intention and action. I’m

In First Person, a member of the Steppenwolf community explores a personal connection to the play and invites you to do the same.

In the Name of the Father By Director of New Play Development Aaron Carter

The theater evokes personal connections in multiple ways. There is, of course, the direct subject connection: an action faced by a character in a play mirrors something we have done. There is also an associative connection: glancing references that resonate, stirring inchoate feelings and fragmented memories. When I witnessed Shelley praying about her father in Grand Concourse, both the direct and associative are triggered, and I was moved to call my father. I connect prayer with my father because he is the most faith-driven person I know. His faith has fundamentally shaped both the course of his life and mine. I fired up Skype, dialed his number, and decided to see where this association would take us. My initial question to my dad, Ken Carter, was inspired by a moment in Grand Concourse. Shelley tells Emma, the new volunteer at the soup kitchen, about learning to pray. “When I first started learning to pray,” says Shelley. “I was taught to imagine a real person who loved me. Unconditionally. So I would just talk to my Grandma.” Many branches of the Christian tradition emphasize a personal relationship with God. I asked my dad what he taught my siblings and me about prayer.

24 FEATURES

KEN CARTER : Well, I felt that it was only fair that I teach you not

just about the God who created you, but also about communicating with him. Prayer is simply communicating with God. I wanted you to understand that God loves you. And it was kind of hard for you children to understand that because of the divorce situation in the family between your mother and me. I didn’t want you to lose hope. There was one point you said “Dad, I'm praying that Mom and you will come back together but it’s not happening.”

But prayer is not just asking God for something. Prayer can also be a rigorous practice of affirming your devotion: something you adhere to whether you feel like it or not. Shelley is attempting to maintain her discipline of prayer by timing her prayers on the microwave. While it surprises Emma that a nun might have trouble praying, using an external prompt is a time-honored practice in prayer. The microwave timer is not much different than using beads to keep your place when praying the Rosary. Even in the evangelical tradition in which I grew up, we had our prayer objects—though my Dad’s style could be unconventional. I remember my father telling me a story about literally standing on the Bible in an attempt to demonstrate the sincerity of his plea. KC: It might have been at the time when your Mom and I had decided

to go our separate ways, but I didn't want that to happen. And I had sought counsel with the church elders, and people were praying and I was at home. And I put the Bible on the floor, and I said “I'm standing on the Word of God and this is my wife and my family and I refuse to allow anything but God's purpose to be accomplished.” But that particular prayer wasn’t answered. I asked my dad why prayer doesn’t always work. KC : All prayer—when directed to God according to the Holy

Scripture—is answered. But it may not be answered according to how we want it to be. God is able to see beyond the future. What we ask in our prayers may not necessarily be his desire for us, because he knows a greater outcome.

Early on in the play, we learn that Shelly is asking for forgiveness. Not only is she seeking forgiveness for her own sins, she's asking God for guidance in finding a way to forgive her father. For what, exactly, she does not say. My dad shared his thoughts about the relationship between prayer and forgiveness.

FEATURES 25

GROUPS KC : Prayer is actually very important in the situation of

forgiveness. And I think that the first thing any person has to learn to understand is that forgiveness is not necessarily for the perpetrator. Forgiveness is mainly for yourself. Because when you forgive the one who has damaged you, you free yourself to continue to be open to God and to live and to understand why the person has done what they have done to you.

THIS COULD BE YOUR GROUP!

Even with the assistance of God, my father acknowledged that forgiveness could take years. KC : There was a situation when I was a child... when my father

beat my mother. And I said to him as an 8 year old child if you ever hit my mother again, when I become an adult I will kill you myself. And when I actually became an adult and encountered the living god through his son Jesus Christ I had to learn to forgive my father for the horrendous things he had done to our family. And it was extremely difficult. It was so difficult that in my nights of prayer I would say, “Dear God, if there is any other way I can be united with you please let it be so, because if my father is in heaven with you, I don't want to go.”

After a dutiful conversation about a visit in October, I ended the call. I couldn't remember the last time we talked about my parents’ divorce. And that was the most detailed conversation we had ever had about my dad’s relationship with his own father. It struck me that inside of a tradition that emphasizes a personal relationship with God, you can't talk honestly about prayer without touching on your most personal details. With that in mind, I began to see Shelley's prayers as the window through which an audience might glimpse the events outside the immediate world of the play that have most profoundly shaped her. As you piece together hints of what Shelly is facing, particularly in her relationship with her father, you gain a richer understanding of how those off-stage events put pressure on the choices we witness Shelley make. Listen closely to her prayers: in her petition to God for guidance about where she should be going, there are clues to where she has been. And perhaps as your understanding grows, you will form an opinion about how, exactly, her prayers should be answered.

T H E S T E P P E N W O L F E N S E M B L E first began performing in the mid-1970s in the basement of a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 39 years and Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 44 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf’s artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theater, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for groundbreaking, innovative work. That work is represented in production photos displayed throughout the theater.

Directed by

2015/16 season

Forty years of unforgettable moments… and we’re just getting started.

John Steinbeck’s

1 East of Eden

Adapted by ensemble member Frank Galati Directed by ensemble member and co-founder Terry

Kinney Featuring ensemble members Kate Arrington, Tim Hopper, Francis Guinan and Alan Wilder September 17 – November 15, 2015

From the author of The Aliens and Circle Mirror Transformation Three underpaid employees sweep up stale popcorn in a run-down movie house called The Flick, one of the last theaters in Massachusetts still projecting 35mm films. For Avery, this isn’t a deadend job. It’s a way to get closer to the art form he loves. Passionate debates about cinema lead to a friendship of sorts with co-workers Sam and Rose. But will their tentative bond survive as they reveal what they actually need from each other? The Flick is a heartfelt cry for the kind of authentic connection we all want, even if we’re a little afraid of it.

4 Mary Page Marlowe By ensemble member Tracy

Letts

Directed by ensemble member Anna

D. Shapiro

March 31 – May 29, 2016

From the adaptor of As I Lay Dying, The March and The Grapes of Wrath

From the author of Killer Joe, Superior Donuts and August: Osage County

Escaping a turbulent past, Adam Trask is determined to make a new start in California’s Salinas Valley. Adam and his wife Cathy settle on a beautiful farm, and soon Cathy gives birth to twins Caleb and Aron. But family history, sibling rivalry and the impending danger of World War One will threaten their little piece of paradise. East of Eden is a sprawling and unflinching story that asks if it is possible to escape the mistakes of previous generations and choose your own course.

Mary Page Marlowe is an accountant from Ohio. She’s led an ordinary life, making the difficult decisions we all face as we try to figure out who we really are and what we really want. As Tracy Letts brings us moments—both pivotal and mundane—from Mary’s life, a portrait of a surprisingly complicated woman emerges. Intimate and moving, Mary Page Marlowe shows us how circumstance, impulse and time can combine to make us mysteries… even to ourselves.

2 Domesticated

Written and directed by ensemble member Bruce

Norris Featuring ensemble members Alana Arenas, Tom Irwin, Martha Lavey and Mariann Mayberry December 3, 2015 – February 7, 2016 From the author of The Pain and the Itch, The Qualms and Clybourne Park Politician Bill Pulver faces the cameras to stumble his way through a carefully crafted apology as his wife Judy stands stoically behind him… but what is she REALLY thinking? We are about to find out in Bruce Norris’s wickedly funny, unpredictable play about a marriage burst apart by a sex scandal. This scathing, wildly entertaining play investigates gender politics, modern marriage and the sexual mysteries of the animal kingdom.

5 Between Riverside and Crazy By Stephen

Adly Guirgis

Directed by ensemble member Yasen

Peyankov Featuring ensemble members Tim Hopper and James Vincent Meredith June 23 – August 21, 2016 From the author of Our Lady of 121st Street and The Motherf**ker with the Hat Ex-cop “Pops” Washington and his ex-con son Junior are barely holding on to one of the last great rent stabilized apartments in Manhattan. Pops has his hands (not to mention his apartment) full as he navigates a steady stream of sketchy houseguests and sweats out the impending verdict on his lawsuit against the police department. A celebration of the glorious contradictions that make up human nature, this rowdy dark comedy looks at the slippery nature of justice, and the grit it takes to finally move on.

OUR FUTURE RELIES UPON THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF SEASON SPONSORS WHO PROVIDE INVALUABLE RESOURCES FOR THE WORK OF OUR ACTORS, DIRECTORS AND PLAYWRIGHTS. WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMITMENT TO THE VISION OF OUR ENSEMBLE.

We are deeply grateful for BMO Harris Bank’s ongoing partnership with Steppenwolf, including their sustained lead sponsorship of Steppenwolf’s annual Women in the Arts Luncheon and BMO Private Bank’s sponsorship of Steppenwolf’s 2015 Gala Benefit. With their sponsorship of these important Chicago cultural events, BMO Harris Bank recognizes the role that the arts play in enhancing the quality of life for all people in our community. BMO Harris Bank takes pride in providing financial support to organizations like Steppenwolf, whose missions align with the needs of the local community.

Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s 2014/15 season is generously sponsored by: Grand Benefactors

The Crown Family The Crown Family’s support of Steppenwolf for Young Adults stems from the goal to improve access to quality arts learning for Chicago students, while fostering an appreciation for the arts. Steppenwolf is proud to partner with the Crown Family in advancing our plays to a diverse audience in Chicago, along with accompanying post-show discussions, in-school residencies and professional development for teachers.

Benefactors The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s support for more than 300 arts and cultural organizations in Chicago and the region is an expression of its civic commitment to the community where the Foundation is headquartered. The Foundation’s multiyear commitment of unrestricted operating funds provides sustaining support for leading Chicago cultural institutions like Steppenwolf, ensuring this city’s world-class reputation as a vibrant place to live, work and visit.

An exceptional curator of traditional Italian cuisine in a warm, rustic interior, Vinci is a perfect fit for Steppenwolf guests to enjoy before or after a performance. The inviting sense of family that permeates the walls of Vinci is in keeping with the ensemble-driven nature of the work at Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Steppenwolf is honored to continue to partner with our neighbors at Vinci.

STEPPENWOLF 59

Hosted by our renowned ensemble and Board of Trustees, Steppenwolf’s Gala Benefit on May 9, 2015 was a remarkable celebration, raising $1.2 million in vital support for Steppenwolf’s artistic, educational and community programming. Leaders of Chicago’s civic and business communities joined Steppenwolf’s artists for a showcase from our production of The Herd, cocktails, seated dinner, an extraordinary live auction and dancing to Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band.

Accessibility at Steppenwolf Committed to providing services and programming that enhance the experience of guests with disabilities, Steppenwolf is proud to feature: • Assistive listening devices in our Downstairs and Upstairs theaters. • Audio-described performances, artistic conversations and touch tours of the stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. • Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.

New! Induction loop in the Downstairs Theatre If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! With the help and expertise of Assistive Hearing Systems Ltd., we recently completed installation of an induction loop on both the main and balcony levels of our Downstairs Theatre. If you use the loop, we would love to hear about your experience – we’re still fine-tuning the system, and all feedback is helpful. Please ask any member of our customer service staff for a survey to complete, or email access@steppenwolf.org. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby.

Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.

Lost or Found? On-site? Please check in with a member of the house staff. Already left? Call the Front of House office at 312-932-2445. Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance, fill out the 60-Second Survey inserted in this program or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheatre. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater ? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@steppenwolf.org. Need to contact a patron during a performance? If you need to contact a patron during a performance in our Downstairs or Upstairs Theaters, please call our Concierge Desk at 312-932-2476. Hours: one hour prior to curtain until 15 minutes after curtain call.

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. The theater reserves the right to limit admission of children younger than the age of six.
