Welcome to Hir I first encountered Taylor Mac’s work when I was invited to see judy (Mac’s preferred personal pronoun) in an incredible performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center. For those of you not familiar with that venue, it sits on a high floor at Columbus Circle and the stage is set in front of giant floor-to-ceiling plate glass windows overlooking Central Park and the surrounding alwaysbusy streets. The whole evening was special—great band, Taylor’s beautiful voice and incisive social critique, the humor and the truth—all conspired to turn that plate-glass back drop into a telescope trained on the entire city of New York and American culture at-large.

THAT’S LESS THAN $17 TO SEE ANY PLAY AT ANY TIME. THE ONLY CATCH...YOU HAVE TO BE 29 YEARS OLD OR YOUNGER.
When I read Hir, Mac’s modern contemplation of the new American family, I was immediately sent back to the feelings of that night above my second city, and the sensation of encountering an artist whose view of the world would forever change the shape of my own. In performance, Taylor dives headlong into the politics that surround the topic at hand, whether that is gender, our American identity, or the pop music of a particular decade. These observations are direct, unstinting and totally readable for what they are: a commentary on the at-times hostile contradictions between who we say we are and how we behave. In Hir, Taylor turns that eagle eye on the very structure of American life—the nuclear family—and the traditional roles that we have all been asked to play in a story whose rules just keep changing. In Hir, an oldest son is returning home from the current war, the youngest child is transitioning and a long-suffering housewife is turning the tables on her now-incapacitated historicallyabusive husband. As macabre and dark as that may sound, each character in Hir is immersed in the ever-common familial battle of re-definition: the sometimes futile and always comic attempt we each make to change how we are seen by the people who made us what we are. That Taylor looks at this struggle with as much compassion as critique and as much humor as pathos just makes the play all the more welcoming and vital. That judy wrote the play in response to seeing Steppenwolf’s production of Buried Child makes its home here nothing short of inevitable. Used to be, when you became a parent, there was only one thing you knew for sure: whether your child was a boy or a girl. And when you married, you entered a partnership with your husband or wife based on the idea of a shared wish for the future and your place in it. Now, all bets are off as so many things we took as facts have turned out to be nothing more than ideological constructs that helped perpetuate the status quo. What we do with this new information—this truth—will perhaps be the real measure of who we are as human beings—both in our families and in the world. And in Hir, Taylor Mac turns those plate glass windows into the mirror that helps us to recognize ourselves and start to understand where to begin. Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director

Playwright Taylor Mac on Hir When I first moved to New York I was trying to be an actor and I hadn’t discovered what that meant, what the options of that could be for me. So then I discovered this club world that was so fascinating to me in the sense that there were rules, but they were completely different, and you didn’t
have to ask for permission to be creative, you could just show up and do it.
The catalyst for it was certainly about growing up in Stockton, California, and in a place that I couldn’t wait to get out of, couldn’t wait to escape. I left, all my
And then there was a community too that was there, that was present, that was progressive and radical and interested in ideas. And you would think that the nightlife would just be people drinking and partying and having a good time, and it is that as well, but there was also this

Stockton is statistically one of the worst places to live in America and always has been in my lifetime, so that was the catalyst for the play, what responsibility do we have to something that has been abusive to us.
of the fucking and sucking and drinking and, you know, all of the fun.
So because the form of that world was so liberating, so much not a part of a social dictator or social contract, then the form of my theatre could expand as well, the form of the art that I wanted to make could also kind of blow up. Even the work like Hir which is a four-character kitchen-sink dramedy, or black comedy, or whatever you want to call it (I call it absurd realism), is a piece that is addressing homogeneity and heterogeneity, and the play is trying to be multiple
things in a world that is asking it to be one thing.
the brain when I wrote this play, and I obviously had this company on the brain when I wrote the play. Yeah, it was kind of my, it’s, I don’t want to say it’s my take on Sam Shepard, but it was heavily influenced, I think. So it’s thrilling to me to be at Steppenwolf, it’s totally thrilling, it’s like “Oh my gosh it happened,” you know? I feel like I manifested it.

I started writing this play right after I saw Buried Child, the Steppenwolf production of Buried Child that went to Broadway. And so I had Sam Shepard on

The plot of the play is, it’s a fairly simple plot, prodigal son comes home from the war and everything that he knew of home to be is now different. His sister is no longer his sister but his transgender / genderqueer sibling. And so everything is different and the house is a total disaster. The father made everything be orderly and now nothing is orderly. They’ve decided to basically deconstruct their home. And then this transgender character, Max, is kind of stuck in the middle a little bit. In a lot of ways it’s my way of saying, what if America
(we always think of the prodigal son as the metaphor for America), what if the metaphor for America was the transgender kid instead? What does that do to our understanding of the United States?
What’s Your Gender Pronoun? My name is Greta Honold and I use the gender pronouns she/her. In the play Hir the character of Max uses the pronouns ze/hir. Here is an excerpt from the script, in which Paige explains Max’s choice of gender pronouns to Isaac:
Q: What is a pronoun?
uses for themself. For example: If Alex’s pronouns are she, her, and hers, you could say “Alex ate her food because she was hungry.”
they were hungry.) This is a pretty common gender-neutral pronoun and it can be used in the singular. In fact, “they” was voted as the Word of the Year in 2015. Ze, hir (Tyler ate hir food because ze was hungry.) Ze is pronounced like “zee” can also be spelled zie or xe, and replaces she/he/they. Hir is pronounced like “here” and replaces her/hers/him/his/they/theirs. Just my name please! (Ash ate Ash’s food because Ash was hungry) Some people prefer not to use pronouns at all, using their name as a pronoun instead. Never refer to a person as “it” or “he-she”. These are offensive slurs used against trans and gender non-conforming individuals.
Q: Why is it important to respect people’s pronouns?
Q: How do I ask someone what pronouns they use?
A: A pronoun is a word that refers to either
the people talking (like I or you) or someone or something that is being talked about (like she, it, them, and this). Gender pronouns (like he and hers) specifically refer to people that you are talking about.
Q: What are gender pronouns? A: A gender pronoun is the pronoun that a person PAIGE: Isaac, stay with me. What you think you know, you do not know. There are no longer two genders. No longer simply a Y and X chromosome but an alphabet of genders. They call it the LGBTTSQQIAAP community. Or what I call the gender of Lugabuttsqueehah. In these new genders exists new pronouns. Max is no longer a “she” or a “he.” So you call Max “ze.” You must use “ze” instead of the pronouns “he” or “she” and you must use the pronoun (Pronounced “here.” ) “hir,” H-I-R, in place of the pronouns “her” or “him.” Max gets very upset if you refer to hir as a she, he,
her, or him. Ze wants you to refer to hir as a hir or ze. Ze also gets upset when you emphasize the ze as if commenting on the pronoun Hir when speaking to hir. For example if you were to say, “What is ZE doing today?,” ze will not like that. Ze, understandably, is not to be treated as a side-show oddity. Ze wants you to say ze or hir as if this had been part of your regular speaking vocabulary your entire life. Any breach in decorum will cause hir to write in hir blog about how awful hir troglodyte fascist hetero-normative mother is. It’s fantastic.
ISAAC: I’m confused.
There’s some humor infused into that exchange, but pronouns are serious business. Respecting other people’s gender identities has become a core value at Steppenwolf, where we have included our gender pronouns on our email signatures, and as a company we make it a practice to share our gender pronouns when we introduced ourselves to new colleagues and collaborators. For some of us, it was a learning experience. For others, it was old news and a welcome relief. With a play onstage that takes its title from a gender pronoun, it seems like a great opportunity to share one of our favorite resources about gender pronouns with you! A: You can’t always know what someone’s PGP
(personal gender pronoun) is by looking at them. Asking and correctly using someone’s personal pronoun is one of the most basic ways to show your respect for their gender identity. When someone is referred to with the wrong pronoun, it can make them feel disrespected, invalidated, dismissed, alienated, or dysphoric (or, often, all of the above.) It is a privilege to not have to worry about which pronoun someone is going to use for you based on how they perceive your gender. If you have this privilege, yet fail to respect someone else’s gender identity, it is not only disrespectful and hurtful, but also oppressive.
Q: What are some commonly used pronouns? A: She, her, hers and he, him, his are a few
commonly used pronouns. Some people call these “female/feminine” and “male/masculine” pronouns, but many avoid these labels because not everyone who uses he feels like a “male” or “masculine.” There are also lots of gender-neutral pronouns in use. Here are a few you might hear: They, them, theirs (Shea ate their food because
A: Try asking: “What pronouns do you use?” or “Can you remind me what pronouns you use?” It can feel awkward at first, but it is not half as awkward as making a hurtful assumption. If you are asking as part of an introduction exercise and you want to quickly explain what a PGP is, you can try something like this: “Tell us your name, where you come from, and your personal pronoun. That means the pronoun that you use in reference to yourself. For example, I’m Xena, I’m from Amazon Island, and I like to be referred to with she, her, and hers pronouns. So you could say, ‘she went to her car’ if you were talking about me.” Q: What if I make a mistake? A: It’s okay! Everyone slips up from time to time.
The best thing to do if you use the wrong pronoun for someone is to say something right away, like “Sorry, I meant she.” If you realize your mistake after the fact, apologize in private and move on. A lot of the time it can be tempting to go on and on about how bad you feel that you messed up or how hard it is for you to get it right. Please don’t! It is inappropriate and makes the person who was misgendered feel awkward and responsible for comforting you, which is absolutely not their job.

Martha Lavey, ensemble member and former Steppenwolf Artistic Director, passed away on Tuesday April 25 due to complications from a stroke she suffered the previous week. This stroke was in addition to the debilitating stroke she suffered in May of 2015, and from which she had been struggling to recover. She spent her last days as she lived, in the company and comfort of family, ensemble members and people who love her deeply. As faithful friends, audience members, donors, staff, artists, mentees and members of the Steppenwolf community, we were all indelibly impacted by Martha’s passion, commitment, vision and unmatched intellect. Martha cared deeply for each and every one of us—no matter our relationship to her or the theatre. She will be dearly missed.

The Steppenwolf Ensemble first began performing in the mid-1970s in the basement
of a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 41 years and Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 49 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf’s artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theater, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for groundbreaking, innovative work. That work is represented in production photos displayed throughout the theater.

Committed to providing services and programming that enhance the experience of guests with disabilities, Steppenwolf is proud to feature: • Audio-described performances, artistic conversations and touch tours of the stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. • Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops, installed with the help and expertise of Assistive Hearing Systems Ltd. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.
Lost or Found? On-site? Please check in with a member of the house staff. Already left? Call the Front of House office at 312-932-2445. Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance, fill out the survey inserted in this program or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheatre. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater ? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@steppenwolf.org. Need to contact a patron during a performance? If you need to contact a patron during a performance in our Downstairs or Upstairs Theaters, please call our Concierge Desk at 312-932-2476. Hours: one hour prior to curtain until 15 minutes after curtain call.
Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. The theater reserves the right to limit admission of children younger than the age of six. The taking of photographs and the use of any type of recording device is not allowed in the theater during performances and is a violation of state and federal copyright laws. Digital media will be deleted, and tape or film will be confiscated.
