We welcome playwright David Adjmi to the Steppenwolf stage. David is a playwright fascinated by the superficialities of popular culture which he interrogates in surprising ways. For instance, his play, 3C is a riff on the popular television series, Three’s Company. The play was controversial in its reception—DLT Entertainment, the company that holds the rights to the television series, sued Adjmi for copyright infringement, fearful that the play would be mistaken for an adaptation of the original. In 3C, Adjmi is explores the homophobia and sexism he detects in the original series and lampoons the implicit normative lifestyle assumptions in the television program. His play mimes the characters and discourse of the series and pressurizes them into parody and social critique. Similarly, his Marie Antoinette takes the historical personage of the title character and her reception in popular culture to investigate our assumptions about her. I would suggest that primary among those assumptions is the trope of the “frivolous woman” and its underlying sexism. Robert O’Hara, our director, shares Adjmi’s interest in the hidden narratives in popular culture figures. Robert is also a playwright and a great focus in his work as a writer is the explosion of cultural myth. In particular the narratives of race, of conventional family life and of genderappropriate behavior. Like Adjmi, Robert sees theater as an arena in which to interrogate culturally sanctioned lifestyles and narratives. Robert proposed Marie Antoinette with Alana in the role of the title character, 4 Welcome
intrigued by the image of a black Marie Antoinette. As Robert expressed it, Marie Antoinette was a signature celebrity, presaging our present day, fame-obsessed culture. If that culture turns on image, appearance and persona, how does race complicate that equation? What does the overlay of an alternate race do to the expression of an historical personage known for her preoccupation with appearance? To what extent does our popular reception of Marie Antoinette turn on our willingness to assign frivolity and narcissism to her gender? Adjmi gives us a Marie who fulfills our image of her as petulant, entitled, unconscious of her cruelties. But over the course of the play, he pulls back the curtain on the system that created her. As Marie is informed of a growing fomentation against the monarchy, she confesses to her best friend, Lamballe, “I know there’s something/ else in me that wants to get out.//A little bird beating its wings against/the inside of its cage; it’s funny.” Marie Antoinette, the fifteenth in her family of sixteen children, was married to Louis-Auguste, the Dauphin of France, when she was 15 years old. One imagines that given these circumstances, she had little opportunity to form her own identity. She became the Dauphine of France, a political and socially-constructed role, in adolescence. She was assigned her identity before she had the psychological resources to resist or reshape the contours of that persona. She came into her role in the court, which was laden with codified expectations about her behavior and appearance, and behaved accordingly: spending extravagantly on her clothes, jewelry and wigs. Initially charming
the French public, Marie increasingly became an object of scorn, and Adjmi imagines her awakening to her own captured state in the moment of the populist revolution. It’s not Adjmi’s project to produce a defense of Marie Antoinette; rather, I think his interest is in the creation of her as “celebrity”—an identity more assumed than authored. He gives us a Marie both set in her historical moment with references to the events of her time, but with anachronisms that point to our current cultural moment. The “spoiled rich girl” of which Marie Antoinette is a prototype lives in the current celebrity pantheon. Why does this image seize the collective imagination? Why is it the inevitable that a public figure in this image becomes a figure of scorn? What is it that we, the public, are working out in our initial embrace and eventual expulsion of the pampered and extravagant young woman? And who is it in there? What is the inner life of that young woman? Does she have an inner life? What does it mean to live as a spectacle? That all of this is being negotiated in the cultural space of the theater is just right. Who are we when we are onstage but a spectacle: you see us, but the convention is that we can’t see you. It’s a curious distribution of power. The figure onstage appears to hold sway but it’s the observer who, in the cover of anonymity, assigns meaning to the spectacle. The French philosopher and social theorist Michel Foucault seizes, in his discussion of social power, on Jeremy Bentham’s idea of the Panopticon, an institutional building structured like a prison yard, that allows the observer power over the observed. Foucault applies this form of “obtaining power of mind over mind” that Bentham describes to a variety
of social situations and practices in a way that is illuminating to our consideration of a celebrity culture and, indeed, of the cultural space of the theater. Adjmi doubles down on the celebrity equation by giving us a woman famous both for her appearance (and attention to appearance) and a player in the political arena (“arena” as another fit metaphor for the panoptican). And then he places that overdetermined figure in the dynamic of the theater. Marie is looked at (as a monarch), and looked at (as a figure of fashion), and looked at (as a character in a drama). All of that surveying echoes her experience in the intimate realm: at one point she says to her friend Lamballe, “Do you know when I got to Versailles mother spied on me. She did. Spied on me and punished and exhorted me and never raised me. Sometimes I feel like... I’m not even a... person...” To experience a loss of one’s personhood when made the object of the gaze would seem to be precisely Adjmi’s point. And, I think the play is asking us about our own culture and its celebrity machinery. The rapidity with which we consume and discard public figures is breathtaking. If a loss of personhood is the consequence of being the object of the gaze, what is the consequence for the looker? What happens to our personhood when we agree to live in a surveillance society? Yes, we have the delicious pleasure of accessing celebrity. But what have we given up of our own privacy and personhood?

an ensemble member since 1976, was last seen in Russian Transport (Steppenwolf Theatre Company) and is delighted to be returning to the stage as a sheep. The veteran of over 60 Steppenwolf productions has been praised as an actor of great versatility, exemplified in part by his brilliant animal portrayals. He has been called a chameleon. This is mostly because he literally played a chameleon in the avant-garde film directed by surrealist Luis Buñuel’s grandson, Antonio de las Incontinencias Buñuel. Another noteworthy reptilian role was his portrayal of the title character in the bold adaptation of The Night of the Iguana by the Abstractionist Workshop Lab Consortium and Theatre Ensemble of Long-Winded Absurdists. One critic deemed Alan’s performance in this piece, “moving and endearing, especially in his fly-catching scenes.” As a son of both the American and French Revolutions honoring a great family tradition, Alan Wilder would like to dedicate 14 bios
his performance in this show to his seven times great grandfather, Arnold Benedict Derrière Wilder, who, in 1783, had the honor of being the actor chosen to play the back end of George Washington’s horse. A a r o n C a r t e r : Let’s begin with a little background about your career. Did you start as a playwright or a director first?
A Glorious Train Wreck Director Robert O’Hara chats with Director of New Play Development Aaron Carter about Marie Antoinette
20 FEATURES
R o b e r t O ’ Ha r a : I trained as a director. My MFA is in directing from Columbia University. But I was always a playwright. I actually started off as both, because the thing that launched my career was my thesis in Directing, which I also wrote. It was sort of a calculated move because I knew that if I didn’t get work as a director I might be able to get work as a writer. So I was trying to put myself out there as a person who could do two things at once. A C : How did you first get interested in Marie Antoinette? Have you worked with David before? RO : I have never worked with David, but I’ve been a fan of his work for some time. I’m the Mellon Playwright in Residence at Woolly Mammoth, so I sit on the senior staff and administrate season planning. And we selected Marie Antoinette to open their season. I was the engine interested in it as both a fellow writer but also as a director, but ultimately I didn’t direct the production at Woolly Mammoth. A C : So what made you suggest it as a project for Steppenwolf, and particularly for Alana? RO : Well we knew we wanted to have a very interesting and exciting female lead because Alana is both those things. And in the play, the central character has to have a sense of humor, but she also goes to a really dark place. I actually didn’t think of the fact that she was African
American until later. I just wanted to do the play because it’s period and funny and big and outrageous. And political! It has a sort of dirtiness to it, in that it plays fast and loose with how we think royalty is supposed to act. To see Alana—who is a very well put together individual—to see her go through all of this madness I thought would be quite exciting. A C : So, even though it wasn’t part of your initial impulse, do you think the fact that Alana is an African American actress will play into the meaning that is created by this piece? RO : I do. First of all, we don’t see black royalty. And when we do it’s because they’ve created an R&B song, or a hip hop song. We see it in the entertainment industry, but we don’t see it by birth. The choice of nontraditional casting is so immediate in this play, because it’s not like you could even pretend Marie Antoinette was remotely African American—it feels a little bit off. But Marie was a little bit off. She was a woman out of her own land, having to pretend to be something she was not: a French queen. That could actually be really exciting to parallel in terms of Alana being an African American playing a French queen. It’s like an Austrian playing a French Queen. A C : That’s such a great perspective, because the play itself is a very contemporary riff on historical events. How do you balance the play’s contemporary feel with historical accuracy? RO : Well I think that what David has written is a critique of historical
Features 21
accuracy. I don’t really know what that means, “historical accuracy,” because we’ve already debunked the idea that she said “Let them eat cake” and that was the big thing that everyone believed she said. And then somehow used that to justify her execution. I don’t want people to come into a theater and think they’re in 18th century France, that’s not interesting to me. I would like them to think they are watching something that is speaking to them right now. A C : Why do you think Marie Antoinette as a figure continues to have such a hold on popular culture? RO : I think we’re in love with train wrecks. And she was a glorious train wreck. It’s like the Titanic, or the Great Chicago Fire, or the earthquake in San Francisco—we’re fascinated with tragedy. Watching someone who we put up on a pedestal fall down is thrilling. It says something about our own humanity actually. So I want people to walk in to this world of royalty and make it a sort of high-end event. It will be beautiful— we’re going to wreck it, but you’re going to enjoy it. It’ll be like all the people who dressed up to go aboard the Titanic. You’re going to crash into an iceberg, but you’re going to have fun before that. A C : Do you think we’re fascinated by
train wrecks because it’s comforting to know that we’re watching from safety? Is it just a vicarious thrill? RO : I think it’s actually a subconscious feeling that we are a train wreck ourselves. We all know in some way that the train we are on right now is going to crash. There is going to be another
9/11, the environment is going to be destroyed, a bridge is going to fall down. You know it’s all going to blow up. And I live in New York City, I get on the train— it’s like, this suspension of disbelief. Like we’re just going to get through this moment. I think it is American anxiety, but also moral anxiety that attracts us to watching someone else in trauma. A C : Do you have a sense of how rehearsals are going to unfold or is your directing process something you discover as you go with each text? RO : I don’t know what the process is going to be, but I do know that I like rehearsals to be a creative environment where anything can happen—and then we all light upon something that speaks to all of us. There’s something about it being done at Steppenwolf, there’s something about it being done by a black woman, there’s something about all the women in the play are black, there’s something about, you know, a French queen. I’d like to see what it is that those things stir up. I like to challenge what is on the page, and what we’re going to interpret from it being on the page, and why is that necessary, why it is done that way. A C : Well that was my favorite thing and simultaneously the most frustrating thing about working with you as a director on my play The Gospel of Franklin. You wouldn’t let anything rest; you’d either improve it or cut it.

Readers of this program feature are by now familiar with the premise: the author shares his or her personal connection to the play in the hopes of encouraging similar reflection from our audience members. With that in mind, I’d like to tell you about the time I was the Queen of France. Alright, I’ll admit it. I’ve never been the Queen of France. Nor do I have any experience with celebrity, the American version of royalty. Like most of you, being the focus of the public’s gaze is a completely foreign concept, limited to daydreams about getting four chairs to turn around on the singing competition The Voice. But I think all of us have experienced the particular discomfort of having someone attempt to make us into something. We’ve been the subject of an action more focused, more purposeful than being influenced by a mentor or a parent. Somewhere along the line, someone has set out to remake us to match an image in his or her head. “Hey son, c’mere.” Every interaction with my father that begins with that sentence ends in awkwardness. There was the time that he pulled me aside to let me know that he had noticed my interest in Asian women and predicted that I would marry someone from that background. I was 10. A predilection
and a prediction that never actually materialized, by the way. There was the time he was frustrated that I didn’t know my underwear size while we were shopping for school clothes. So he called me into arm’s reach, and roughly grabbed the back of my pants and checked the size as we stood in the store aisle. And then there was the time he decided to straighten my hair. “Hey son, c’mere.” And I dutifully followed him into the bathroom where a tub a white cream sat on the sink. He scooped up a glop and plopped it on my head. “Tell me when it starts to burn.” And he started to comb it in. I remember looking into the mirror, flushed and embarrassed. Uncomfortable with the intimacy of the act, and having absolutely no idea what was going on. “You got that good hair,” he said. “This is going to look nice.” I don’t have the space for a full declension on African American hair, so suffice it to say I do have “good hair:” loose curls that with a little product relax into thick waves. My hair was a frequent source of friction with my dad. Mostly because I had the grooming habits of a typical teenage boy— that is, none. And I was a swimmer, which fried the hell out of it. I had a head full of split ends turning rust red. And to add insult to injury,

Antoinette, Marie observes “And I wasn’t raised I was built: I was built to be this thing; and now they’re killing me for it…” This line reflects Marie’s growing understanding that her status as Queen has served a larger purpose—one that she was unaware of or chose to ignore. While most of us aren’t facing death for what we’ve been made into, I think we can all connect with that dawning realization that we might not want to inhabit the role we’ve been assigned. A little later in the play, Marie’s self-awareness reaches a critical level of focus. “Has my life been a diversion?” she asks. I believe it is the act of asking that question that allows Marie to face her fate with some degree of control. Yes, she is now swept up in events set in motion long ago, events that she is powerless to stop. But she faces the oncoming sweep of history knowing who she is, and having the independence to imagine she could have made other choices. She will lose her life, but she is not a victim. Celebrity culture, that urge we have to rubber neck as we pass a wreck, tearing down those we have built up: all these notions are explored in Marie Antoinette. I also think the play is asking us—even those of us not in the limelight— in the moment you realize that someone else has shaped you, what will you choose to become?

I wasn’t taking care of hair that some people might envy. I stood there, goo burning my head, trying to calculate how much discomfort was enough to say “stop.” I also felt a tightness in my throat that now I would call shame. Look, I didn’t have the framework for it then. Discussions of blackness and beauty were never had in my home. All I knew was that my father thought something was wrong with me that needing fixing. I was being remade to match an image I did not understand. I was being fed into a very particular slot in the terrifying machine that is black identity in America. I remember feeling that something huge and knowable loomed in the air over us, and it was coming for me. Then he stuck my head under the sink, rinsed the product out. And he was right. It did look good. It is probably too simple to draw a straight line between that moment, and what came next: the years of wearing my hair in the biggest Afro I could manage hanging at the Black Student Union at our local university, and joining their talent show in which I read Claude McKay’s “If We Must Die” and experienced my first step routine; sewing my own dashiki. But there is a connection—and somewhere between and among those events there was decision: I was going to build my own image. At one point in Marie

T h e S t e pp e nw o l f En s e m bl e first began performing in the mid-1970s in the basement of a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 39 years and Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 44 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf’s artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theater, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for groundbreaking, innovative work. That work is represented in production photos displayed throughout the theater.

A Tribute to
Steven LaVoie 1959 – 2014
Together
we make great theater. Steppenwolf recently lost a dear friend and generous supporter: Steve LaVoie, who was a devoted husband to Jody and father to Katie, Sarah and Caroline and an accomplished business leader. Steve attended Steppenwolf with Jody for many years, and his kindness, enthusiasm and curiosity will be much missed at donor events for the Directors Circle. He loved learning about the backstage tricks that made our productions possible as well as meeting actors, directors, and writers. He channeled his excitement about our work as a member of the Behind the Curtain event planning committee in 2009 and 2010. We Lavoie on the set of EndGame are honored to call him a friend.
As a not-for-profit organization, our work is only possible because of donors like you. If you are already a donor, thank you! If you are not, please consider joining our family of supporters.

Steppenwolf’s reputation derives from our willingness to take on challenging, ambitious projects. Our future relies upon the generous support of season sponsors who provide invaluable resources for the work of our actors, directors and playwrights. We thank you for your commitment to the vision of our ensemble.
Steppenwolf is excited to continue our partnership with JPMorgan Chase & Co. as the major corporate supporter of Steppenwolf’s career readiness and professional leadership program. JPMorgan Chase seeks to provide opportunities for individuals and companies to better compete in the global economy and to help youth commit to their futures. Their support of Steppenwolf’s career readiness programs, including Steppenwolf for Young Adults and the Professional Leadership Program, helps teens and young adults acquire new skills and prepare for future arts careers.

It is an honor for Steppenwolf to welcome Ameriprise Financial as a new supporter of our theater. For 120 years, Ameriprise has initiated positive change in the communities where they live and work. Ameriprise believes their community involvement enables them to actively live their values of being client focused, upholding integrity, executing with excellence, and respecting individuals and the communities in which they live and work. Steppenwolf is honored to continue our longstanding partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The Endowment supports the creation of art that meets the highest standards of artistic excellence. “Art Works” refers to three things: the works of art themselves, the ways art works on audiences, and the fact that art is work for the artists and arts professionals who make up the field.
Prince Charitable Trusts The Prince Charitable Trusts have been proud to support Steppenwolf’s productions and programming for 20 years. A leading champion of artistic excellence in Chicago, PCT salutes Steppenwolf’s commitment to thought-provoking theater and community engagement. The Trusts support the core mission of arts organizations through grants for general operations and projects that strengthen management or lead directly to the commissioning and performance of new work.
For more information on how you can support Steppenwolf’s artistic intiatives as a sponsor or corporate partner, please contact Megan McGuane at 312-654-5697 or msmith@steppenwolf.org. 38 Marie Antoinette

Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.
Lost or Found? On-site? Please check in with a member of the house staff. Already left? Call the Front of House office at 312-932-2445. Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance, fill out the 60-Second Survey inserted in this program or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheatre. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater ? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@steppenwolf.org. Need to contact a patron during a performance? If you need to contact a patron during a performance in our Downstairs or Upstairs Theaters, please call our Concierge Desk at 312-932-2476.
