WELCOME TO THE REMBRANDT When I first read Jessie Dickey’s beautiful play, The Rembrandt, I was moved by its deft and enchanting contemplation of art and eternity, love and loss. Often a great play exists so inarguably in the world that its truth is undeniable and so, in a way, any encounter with the work is comforting and its message confirming. At that moment in my life, and frankly in the life of this theatre company, that gesture—one of gentle hopefulness—felt right and important and so we scheduled the play to open our season. As a programmer of an arts institution in this particular moment, almost two years later, I am often asked to speak about the difference between a play’s meaning for us (and our audience) pre- and post-election. It seems to be the inescapable new frame for every conversation we have: do you look at this play/idea/person/moment in a new way since November 2016? I wouldn’t argue that this isn’t an important interrogation, nor would I argue I don’t engage the question often myself. But as we begin our 2017/18 season, Steppenwolf as a family is reeling from a series of losses that have sent many of us into a conversation that is, at least for the moment, more personal and more internal. In the span of less than four months, we lost three ensemble members: Martha Lavey, Glenne Headley and Mariann Mayberry. These women were responsible for and a part of some of the most memorable work this company has ever done and will ever do. To lose even one of them is devastating. To be robbed of them all, so quickly and so close together is unspeakable. And I realized as I sat down to write about The Rembrandt that these losses have quite literally redrawn the landscape of my world. How does a story whose meaning was at one time abstract change when it becomes, suddenly and unbidden, simply your life? In Jessie’s play, a series of people both connected and unconnected, famous and not, find themselves translating the challenges of life through their shared experience of art. Whether they are makers or observers doesn’t matter as they each understand in the other the need to engage questions in a language beyond the reach of their day-to-day life. I was lucky enough to be in exactly that dialogue with Martha, Glenne and Mariann many times over the years and I will treasure those memories for the rest of my life. To make theater with a person is to fall fully into the arms of their imagination and to be welcomed for all that you are. And though the productions themselves may disappear into memory, what that play brought you into contact with—whether that be a person or an idea—lives on forever in the memory of your mind, your body and your soul. Every time that you choose to walk through our doors and witness us in this endeavor— every time you, like the characters in this play, choose the common language of a shared story, you join us in the circle that creates these eternal moments. And in this time of mourning, filled as they always are with both gratitude and regret, I want to say for all of us here at Steppenwolf, thank you. Thank you for joining us in this new season and for every season before. Thank you for seeing us. PLAYWRIGHT JESSICA DICKEY ON THE REMBRANDT Edited by Patrick Zakem Leading up to the first days of rehearsal for The Rembrandt, playwright Jessica Dickey sat down with Steppenwolf’s Artistic and Marketing teams to talk about the play. Here are some highlights from the conversation. On the genesis of the play: This play was originally commissioned by Ford’s Theatre, which is the Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C. where Lincoln was shot. Ford’s is an interesting animal; they’re this hybrid of a national landmark and a producing theater that has started to curate and commission new work. The more time I spent with their mission, the concept of legacy stood out to me. Ford’s is sort of this living model of what we choose to protect and why. Who are the people who are in charge of protecting these cultural institutions, and who are tasked with protecting what we hold dear as a larger culture? Whether that is a place where something monumental happened, in the case of Ford’s, or something like a work of art. So with that question in my mind, I went on a trip to Europe. I was in the National Gallery in London and I think I was in a particular moment of my life, looking at a painting, and maybe I was kind of crying; I know my hands were on my heart. I was having this very personal encounter, deep in my own thoughts about my life, while looking at

this painting and then I looked beside me and within three feet of me was this little museum guard. This little man with thinning strawberry hair, and little spectacles, and this adorable cockney accent. And then, because I’m a particular kind of person, I immediately asked him what that was like. I was just so struck that this was his job: to spend all day in close proximity with these works of art. The museum was closing within minutes, so I asked him a few quick questions not really knowing that I was going to write a play about this. “Have you been sitting here all day? Are other people crying? How long have you done this? Do you rotate? What’s that like? Where have you been today?” He had this very particular mannerism and way of being that was kind of butler-ish. And I found that really intriguing; he was kind of like an elf, like this museum guard elf. I asked him before we parted what his favorite room in the museum was, and he said [British accent] “Oh, oh I quite like the Dutch Interiors.” And I didn’t know what a Dutch interior was but I was like, “Where is that?” Since it was closing, I zoomed to this

back corner of the museum. It’s sort of carpeted, the ceilings are very low and the paintings are all of intimate life in the Netherlands in the 1650s. I was really struck by why this would be his favorite room. Before I ran off I asked him that, and he said “people don’t just sort of wander through on their way to the Mona Lisa or the Monet; you really have to try to find the Dutch Interiors.” A very particular kind of person tends to be in that room, so it’s peaceful and the paintings invite a closer gaze because there’s so much detail and they’re quite small.

I also interviewed some security guards from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, but they had to kind of be on the down-low, because the Met was not so keen to disclose their secrets. That process led me to the particular painting in this play, which is in the Met.

Why this Rembrandt painting?: I was really struck by the fact that Rembrandt often only painted with I went back to the four colors. Bust of Homer, above) is that there’s a relationship in the painting. A lot of his paintings, and I think what he’s most famous for, are portraits of a single subject. But this painting is a scene; it’s a duet. It’s Aristotle contemplating a bust of Homer. And there’s this wonderful anachronistic quality to the painting in that Aristotle is not dressed as an ancient Greek. He’s dressed as a contemporary of Rembrandt, as one might dress in 1653. I loved that the idea of “historical accuracy” is a really modern notion. It’s not actually something that was necessarily a thing back then. That really touched me and interested me as a dramatist who often looks to great figures of the past. The play is looking to touch on each of the figures that culminate in this painting. Rembrandt painted the painting, and Homer is the subject of the painting, and then coming back to this very simple human story of a husband trying to make a different choice with his partner on the verge of death. On protecting the past: While the play looks to jump back, it also tries to bring the past to us and to line up Rembrandt and Homer and their concerns, their longings, their grief and their humor to be very similar to our own. Because if we can invest ourselves in protecting the works of Homer, or protecting a painting by Rembrandt, if somehow we can invest in that idea and the idea that those people are a lot like us, then perhaps we are a little nearer to the idea of protecting each other. And I don’t know if there’s a better thing a play can do, ultimately.

I will say, for what it’s worth, that the chief at the National Gallery in DC said that people attack the art. That it happens often enough that it’s a thing, and that it happens rarely enough that it’s a thing. In one of the cases, a museum guard slashed a painting he had been guarding for a long time. It was a contemporary piece, and it was priced at somewhere between $1 million and $2 million. When asked later “why did you attack the painting out of nowhere” he cited that. That enraged him on some level. On writing about the past: When you are writing a play that takes on a subject trafficking in the legacy of the past, there is this inevitable sense of longing and curiosity and seduction of trying to look to the past and connect yourself to it, and feeling the past pull you to look back and see yourself in it. If I’m honest it’s what makes me write plays. And I think I’m really touched by things that are old. It’s like when I go to an old place, or am near an old thing, I’m trying to remember being there or seeing it for the first time or being alive then. I find it incredibly comforting and mysterious that something has been in existence for so long. And that something like a work of art, of which there is only one of in the world, will last if we do our protection jobs. But there’s only one of me and one of you and we’re gonna pass; we’re gonna go. I find the immensity of that overwhelming and very moving. Being in a room together and seeing a 90 minute theatrical event feels like the right forum to sit with these things.

DEVELOPING THE REMBRANDT IMAGE By Donovan Foote

You might have noticed Steppenwolf looking different these days, in more ways than one. We’ve undergone a rebranding and refreshing of our visual identity to reflect the expansion and diversification of programming and the new initiatives in place as a result of those. The Design and Marketing teams thought it would be interesting to give you a look at one part of the process: that of developing a show image in our new illustration-based system. After reading the script we meet as a small internal team to begin brainstorming ideas. If a show has been performed previously we’ll look at those images and reflect on how to differentiate our image. In the first meeting for The Rembrandt we felt that the act of touching the painting was key and that the use of light would play an important role in the final image.

1b During this first brainstorm we rough sketch several ideas, but try to come away with at least two solid ideas to sketch out in a more refined way. Image 1b is the second idea in which we flipped the act of touching so that the painting was reaching towards the guard.

process began. By working digitally we were able to play around with compostion. You can see some small adjustments made to the frame between images 4 and 5 along with the addition of the stanchions (which helped place it in a museum). In image 5 you see a nearly completed image. To reach the final image the color palette was refined to be more in line with the new brand colors, the guard figure was adjusted so that his right hand was easier to see and the beam of light was simplified for text overlay.

2c The second round of sketches were produced after meeting with playwright Jessica Dickey and director Hallie Gordon. Ideas of bringing the past forward, quietude and ethereal magic were tossed around and the image you see in 2c captured our imaginations. It wasn’t quite right, but it set us on our path.

This final image (and variations of it) is what audiences will see on posters, programs, various marketing assets and more. This, of course, is what the whole process leads up to. As we continue to roll out our new visual identity at Steppenwolf we’re excited to share the new look with you, and for you to get to know Steppenwolf in a whole new way.

We thought the image was too quiet and needed a little more action to it. As you can see in image 3, adding a handful of objects and more movement turned the image into some kind of sci-fi action movie. That wasn’t right either, but we were happy with breaking out of the museum into the expanse of space and shifting the light source from a spotlight to a distant star. With several rounds of sketches under our belts, it was now time to create a final composition rendering (image 4). From here the pencil drawing was scanned and the digital illustration
