MS. BLAKK

FOR PRESIDENT

WELCOME TO MS. BLAKK FOR PRESIDENT “There is magic happening in that room.” This was the email I received from Leelai Demoz, our new associate artistic director, after the first day of rehearsal for Ms. Blakk For President, the new play written by ensemble members Tina Landau and Tarell Alvin McCraney. I was not surprised to hear it. Tina and Tarell have always been artists whose work strives to make our hearts and minds bigger. But I was certainly grateful. Grateful to both of them for being brave enough to embark on a new adventure together here at Steppenwolf and grateful that the impulses behind the work—to celebrate queerness and the people who have championed the lives of queer people for decades—had found its way even into this project’s first breath. Originally scheduled to do a remount of their very successful production of Tarell’s Wig Out, both Tina and Tarell came to me last year and asked if they could do something different, engage a new story with a new structure and a new goal. A Chicago story, a queer story, an AIDS story—one whose time had come and whose time was now. They had no script, no outline, no cast size. All they knew was that they had to tell it and they had to tell it together and they had to tell it here. There are a lot of complicated things about Steppenwolf Theatre Company. We are a family of over fifty artists, spanning three (maybe even four!) generations and we have a staff of over 100 people, all working tirelessly to produce and present work that speaks to an ever changing and evolving community here in Chicago and beyond. It can be paralyzing, trying to figure out how best to use the resources we have—how best to speak to the most important ideas and issues of the day while also offering work whose hallmark is acting excellence. Which way to go? What chance to take? But we do—at the end of the day—have a True North. Steppenwolf is the place where what we need to do, as artists, gets done. And where what we need to say, as citizens, gets said. So of course, we said yes. And then we all met Joan Jett Blakk—who at the 1992 Democratic convention stood among the delegates, wearing a dress made out of the American flag and declared her campaign for President of these United States. When most people in America wanted to look the other way, after ignoring the AIDS crisis and the rights of the queer community, Ms. Blakk insisted that attention must be paid. And the doors to our theatre blew open. Wide open. And we were changed by the magic. And so tonight, we welcome you into this journey of celebration, exaltation and memoriam. When individuals’ rights to their authentic identity are being questioned in the courts and in our politics, we invite you to look back to our past as we see our way to the future. We invite you to be re-energized by the bold and brave individuals who fiercely and unequivocally declared their rights to be who they are, to love who they love, to insist, above all else, on being seen. You are in the hands of great artists, in a theater that is always risking, for a city that was the birthplace of this very story. Thank you for joining us. Welcome. Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director

AN INTERVIEW WITH ENSEMBLE MEMBERS

TINA LANDAU AND TARELL ALVIN McCRANEY

Edited by Greta Honold Illustrations by Donovan Foote

Greta Honold: The story of how this project came to be begins with your, Tina and Tarell’s, desire to work together again, and with Tarell on stage. Can you speak a bit about your artistic relationship, and what it’s like to be collaborating again? Tina Landau: I first worked with Tarell in 2004 when he was in the cast of a piece I did at Steppenwolf called Theatrical Essays. I met him and got to know him, first, as a performer. At the end of the project, he told me he was going to Yale

16 Features

to study playwriting—and three years later, as he was graduating, I got a call asking if I’d be interested in directing a play of his. So we began working together as director and playwright, but I never forgot Tarell’s special magic as a performer and I’ve been trying for 15 years to get him back on stage! So, “collaborating again” feels like a normal part of my on-going artistic life, as we’ve worked together so many times—it’s like family—but collaborating with Tarell on stage too this time is a special joy.

Tarell Alvin McCraney: From my point of view it’s always easy to work with Tina even when we’re working on something that is difficult. This is difficult in the sense that, during the writing process, we were both working on different things at the same time, so we would have to baton the work between us and sometimes I would, out of exhaustion and dyslexia, write back to Tina in a secret language I would later have to decode. Tina was and is patient and would say, hey I don’t understand this, how do we make this clearer and then we would. And that’s what it’s like working with Tina. TL: Because we know each other so well, and have developed a kind of “single voice” as our aesthetic in the works we’ve already made, all the writing kind of came out that way too. It never felt like two different voices trying to match up. Just “our” voice, which we already know and trust and don’t need to talk about or define. I never would have attempted this kind of co-writing with someone without the history and trust Tarell and I already have. GH: Why this story? When did each of you first become aware of Joan Jett Black? TM: The true question is why is this so late? We are in the middle of historic elections that are leaning into identity politics. Here is a story of how these very narratives, activists, have been around and almost forgotten by many. I never knew about this incredible activist/ performer Joan Jett Black until Tina

brought them to my attention. TL: I was flipping through a book called Out and Proud In Chicago, edited by the amazing Tracy Baim—and I came across the entry on Joan Jett Blakk. And I was alone in my office but I stood up and started screaming, “That’s it! That’s it!” I knew immediately that this was a story to be shared now. It’s a Chicago story, it’s a true story, it’s an untold story. It’s a queer story—it asks what is a man? What is a woman? What is gender? It’s a political story—it asks what is a President? And is our government, are our elections, truly for and open to all? Also, as someone who was alive and full grown at the height of the AIDS epidemic, I wanted to do this piece both to honor Terence and the “army of lovers” at ACT UP and QUEER NATION as well as in memory of some dear friends I lost at the time. It’s for them. GH: Can you tell us about how Terence Smith, AKA Joan Jett Blakk, has been involved in the creation of the play? TL: I didn’t want to start in on the piece at all until I had contacted Terence and had his blessing and support. Once we made contact and I knew he was open to discussing the idea, I flew to San Francisco where he lives and we spent some incredible time together. We connected and felt comfortable immediately. He told me his story, in his words, through his own experience, over hours and hours, and that formed the basis for our starting in on the piece. After that we stayed in touch, mostly because we adored each other and

had tidbits to share. But we didn’t talk about anything show related again until we sent him the rehearsal draft of the script. He was blown away, and I was like “Phew.” I love that man. I also want to give a shout out to Steve Mounce who made the connection with Terence possible in the first place, and Joe Jeffreys, who shared his apartment with Terence during the days of the DNC, and kept a detailed diary which he’s shared with us—Joe has been our research consultant and has been invaluable. GH: Tina, I’ve heard you talk about the piece as part play, part party, part political convention. Why did you decide to tell this story using this particular, experiential, theatrical mode? TL: I never really “decided” it, it was just the natural way it was born and breathes—which I can best describe as Queer. Queer to me is more than about sexuality or gender—it’s also a mode of existence, a philosophy, an aesthetic, a way of life, a political statement. That which is Queer resists categorization—it can be fluid, slippery, contradictory. Its form is not a binary This-Or-That, but a non-binary This-AND-That (-andMaybe-Everything-Else-Too). So, just as a person might identify as Queer, so might a show. It’s not just a play—it’s also a party, a rally, a remembrance, a song. If I might read you a quote from Jordan Schildcrout?: that which is queer “celebrates transgression, categorical slippage, intersectionality, and the inability to follow a single ‘straight and narrow’ path.” Also, I’m interested in theater that wakes us up rather than puts

us to sleep, creating a space in which the audience and the performance are together rather than separate, where the audience is invited to experience rather than look at the performance. GH: This run overlaps with Pride month, and the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall riots. Chicago has just had a landmark election. What does it mean to be doing this play now, in Chicago? TL: It’s all part of the celebration. We must continue to celebrate—especially in the face of so much continued elitism, bigotry, and corruption, especially in our government. Gabriel Gomez, who made the film LICK BUSH IN ’92, captured it beautifully when he said, “In the shadow of AIDS, being Joyous was how we were going to survive.” Let’s keep the Joy—and celebrate Pride and Stonewall and Chicago’s election and how much has changed even as we know it’s not enough. TM: Chicago is the American city. This story happened in Chicago. Activists living in Chicago did this. They got involved. They spoke out. Two years ago, writers and artists in this company took to the streets of Chicago in protest. Students from the School at Steppenwolf have started art activist movements all over the city. And sitting mayors and alderpersons come to our theatre to engage. Our audience is a patchwork of the political life of Chicago and if we do nothing else we have to make sure that the TheyStory, History of They or Queer or Other, stays a part of that fabric that makes up this great city.

THE STEPPENWOLF ENSEMBLE Steppenwolf Theatre Company is the nation’s premier ensemble theater. Formed by a collective of actors in 1976, the ensemble members represents a remarkable cross-section of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling and powerful productions from Balm in Gilead and August: Osage County to Pass Over and Downstate—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf produces hundreds of performances and events annually in its three spaces: the 515-seat Downstairs Theatre, the 299-seat Upstairs Theatre and the 80-seat 1700 Theatre. Artistic programing includes a seven-play season; a two-play Steppenwolf for Young Adults season; Visiting Company engagements; and LookOut, a multi-genre performances series. Education initiatives include the nationally recognized work of Steppenwolf for Young Adults, which engages 15,000 participants annually from Chicago’s diverse communities; the esteemed School at Steppenwolf; and Professional Leadership Programs for arts administration training. While firmly grounded in the Chicago community, nearly 40 original Steppenwolf productions have enjoyed success both nationally and internationally, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, London, Sydney, Galway and Dublin. Anna D. Shapiro is the Artistic Director and David Schmitz is the Executive Director. Eric Lefkofsky is Chair of Steppenwolf’s Board of Trustees.

Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre

If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services?
