THE CHILDREN
WELCOME TO THE CHILDREN Usually, when writing this letter to our audiences, I ask myself how best to help people understand why we have chosen the play they are about to see. This letter is used to create a shared space between us, hopefully creating a door (which we build with our reasons) for you to walk through and to offer a shared language in order to engage the ideas that lay inside. Oddly, in this case, to share either now might reveal a bit too much about not just what you are about to see, but how differently each of us on the artistic staff feel about the ideas that lie beyond that door. And it is in this very challenge—what to say and what not to say about what we all can see—lies the essence of Lucy Kirkwood’s brilliant and timeless piece, The Children. As divisive as this current moment may be—both here in the US and around the world—most of us can agree that there actually is a world. Meaning, earth is a planet and it is round and revolves around the sun with the other planets. And how ever you may believe people got here, we can all pretty much agree we haven’t been here very long, that there are way more of us than there used to be and that, even if we can’t agree on that, we know that we and pretty much everything else, are all going to die. It’s how we talk about these givens, or more to the point how we don’t, that shapes a culture. And because we haven’t been around very long, it’s hard to know what the result of this inadvertent decision will be. Humans always seem to believe that the moment of change—of choice—is something that happens to others, at other seemingly more notable times. It’s simply not possible for us to conceive of the possibility that it is in fact our moment that will be written into history and us for whom the reckoning has come. In The Children, Kirkwood looks at the fallout of the delayed conversation with humor, depth and honesty. She knows that in the end, it is not systems that fall but people who shape change. And she puts into the air the questions that are easy to see, hard to understand and even more painful to answer knowing that it is the heroes among us that will finally listen. Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director

PLAYWRIGHT LUCY KIRKWOOD ON THE CHILDREN Edited by Greta Honold Leading up to the first day of rehearsal, Artistic Producer Greta Honold reached out to Playwright Lucy Kirkwood. Lucy, from her home in the East Anglia region of England, generously shared some thoughts on her play The Children. I understand that this play came about, at least in part, because you were interested in trying to figure out how to write about climate change. Can you tell us a bit about that impulse, and the origins of this play? I had wanted to write about climate change for a very long time but simply couldn’t work out the form or even quite get at what exactly was worth saying about it in a theatre. The theatre isn’t a successful information delivery system—we go there for drama, for emotion, not data. And besides, by this point in history, we already know the information, don’t we? So what I slowly realised is this is what was what was meaningful to me—how we can all know that we are living though a climate emergency, and yet continually fail to change our behaviour. How can we go on pretending it’s not happening? Well, one answer to that is that what we are talking about is a death. Both literal—the idea of a dying planet that will become increasingly uninhabitable and riven with famine and water shortages. And in a more metaphorical sense—to meaningfully deal with climate change means a rejection of the basic
18 Features
principles of Capitalism, under which in the West we’ve all had a really lovely and comfortable time of it over the past century. Action demands we give up things that we have been conditioned to think are our rights, things we feel our lives would be impoverished without— plane travel, bottomless carbon, Italian tomatoes in winter. So you have a literal and a metaphorical death at the centre of this problem, squatting on our world stage. And who finds it easy to talk about death? Noone. We know that from the number of people who die without a will, the way we avoid these conversations in our lives—I certainly do, at least. Our death is a terrifying, sublime thing, of course we are paralysed in the face of it. So the ambition became to be generous and kind and forensic about how and why we fail to act in the face of that death. But tell a story that insists that now is the time to do so. Perhaps related, I heard you in an interview talking about some ideas being “just too huge to hold in your head.” In that context, I’m interested specifically in how you went about creating these characters?
I heard the story about the retired workforce going back to work at Fukushima so that the younger members of staff involved in the clean up could leave the site, and they sprang to life quite organically. I always feel like a cheat when I get this question, because the work of creating characters happens for me when I don’t feel like I am creating them, but they start talking and I just have to type quick enough. This play puts all three characters in the same room, and the action takes place sequentially, in a set amount of time. Your plays do not always take this form—others jump in time and space. What is it about the themes of this play that necessitated this particular form? In terms of major plots beats you could argue not a lot happens in the play (though I think it is structured around a thousand tiny battles, that starts with two women who both think it’s their kitchen). But actually we witness at least one, possibly two people to make the most enormous decision you can possibly make. And I felt strongly that this would be far more arresting and moving and harder to detach ourselves from as audience members, if we were there for every stage of that decision making process. We go with Robin and Hazel through various stages of grief, anger, resignation—difficult, uncomfortable things—and my hope is we are gripped and moved at the same time. But we also aren’t allowed to escape.
After the wildly successful premiere productions in London and New York (congratulations by the way!) this play is now enjoying productions all over the world. I’m curious if you’ve observed or heard about any surprising, perhaps culturally specific responses to the play? Nothing that striking I’m afraid. From a writer’s point of view I’m always fascinated by the small details that translate easily and the ones that don’t: when we took the play to New York we had a long conversation in the rehearsal room about the Scotch Egg (a quintessentially British snack) that Douglas eats, and what it could be exchanged for, because it’s unfamiliar to an American ear. So when you hear a falafel mentioned in the play, know that it was originally a hardboiled egg wrapped in sausage meat then coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried— honestly, they’re delicious. But not so heart healthy. The other thing is that in countries where nuclear power is prevalent there is often a tendency to read the play more literally, which is tricky because to me it isn’t at all about nuclear power but I absolutely see why people think it is. Finally, can you tell us a bit about what you may be currently thinking about or working on? I have been adapting a play of mine from 2013 called Chimerica into a 4 part mini series for TV. The original play was set over the 2012 US elections and the temptation to update it to the 2016 election got too strong for me.

THE STEPPENWOLF ENSEMBLE Steppenwolf Theatre Company is the nation’s premier ensemble theater. Formed by a collective of actors in 1976, the ensemble members represents a remarkable cross-section of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling and powerful productions from Balm in Gilead and August: Osage County to Pass Over and Downstate—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf produces hundreds of performances and events annually in its three spaces: the 515-seat Downstairs Theatre, the 299-seat Upstairs Theatre and the 80-seat 1700 Theatre. Artistic programing includes a seven-play season; a two-play Steppenwolf for Young Adults season; Visiting Company engagements; and LookOut, a multi-genre performances series. Education initiatives include the nationally recognized work of Steppenwolf for Young Adults, which engages 15,000 participants annually from Chicago’s diverse communities; the esteemed School at Steppenwolf; and Professional Leadership Programs for arts administration training. While firmly grounded in the Chicago community, nearly 40 original Steppenwolf productions have enjoyed success both nationally and internationally, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, London, Sydney, Galway and Dublin. Anna D. Shapiro is the Artistic Director and David Schmitz is the Executive Director. Eric Lefkofsky is Chair of Steppenwolf’s Board of Trustees.

Accessibility at Steppenwolf Committed to providing services and programming that enhance the experience of guests with disabilities, Steppenwolf is proud to feature: • Assistive listening devices in our Downstairs, Upstairs and 1700 theaters. • Audio-described performances, artistic conversations and touch tours of the stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. • Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre
If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Audience Services 312-335-1650 | TTY 312-335-3830 | E-mail access@steppenwolf.org
Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show.
