CITY CONNECTIONS What is City Connections? City Connections is Steppenwolf Education's community engagement model rooted in building authentic and mutually beneficial long-term partnerships. We take no-cost, barrier-free, artistic and educational programming into communities, with the hope that youth feel inspired to come to Steppenwolf and experiment here as artists and arts appreciators. How do we find new partners? City Connections seeks to bring our work outside of Steppenwolf and into neighborhoods by making connections with peer organizations that use the arts to empower youth in geographic and social communities we don't currently serve. Where do we serve? This year we are working in the West Austin, Roseland and Englewood communities as well as three juvenile justice facilities throughout Illinois through a partnership with Storycatchers Theatre.

This first year partnering with Steppenwolf has been really impactful. I can see the change in the youth. This partnership is beautiful because these kids need creativity. Steppenwolf sharing their workshops and knowledge of the arts to our kids is more profound than I think most of us realize. - Max Cerda

WELCOME TO THE 2018/19 STEPPENWOLF SEASON! It’s hard to believe that the opening of Downstate, a world premiere by ensemble member Bruce Norris, marks the beginning of my fourth season as artistic director of Steppenwolf Theatre. The last few years have been filled with so many changes—some tragic, some beautiful and some just simply disorienting—that it feels apt to begin this one in the arms (and the mind!) of one of the most important American playwrights of our time. Bruce’s work has always been provocative, always modern and always vital. That his plays have consistently challenged all of us to look at our behaviors and our beliefs in ways that sometimes make us uncomfortable is why his work is necessary. That he creates that work with deft humor and true compassion is why he will always have a home on the Steppenwolf stage. When we began work on Downstate, a number of complicated questions came up for the artists and staff involved. Inhabited as it is by sex offenders and their victims, it traffics in a conversation many people don’t even believe should be happening. Why give any voice to these monsters? Why dredge up images and crimes that are considered by some to be the worst imaginable? It is understandable that people are triggered by any conversation regarding children and their safety. Bruce and I both experienced that directly when we produced The Pain and the Itch over a decade ago. So incendiary was the topic of a child and sexuality that written opinions about the play referenced in detail (and with fury) an event in the play that never even took place. This is how powerful and suggestive these conversations can be: they can make us believe we are seeing something that isn’t even there. And I think it’s safe to say that regardless of what side of the aisle you may find yourself on, our times continue to shock and confuse. This makes each of us even more likely to feel vulnerable to evils both real and imagined—that’s what unstable times do. They make us feel fragile. And they make us afraid. That is why it is important for every art form, not just theatre, to respond to this moment not by reinforcing the idea of our fragility but by reminding us of our essential bravery. Theatre audiences are not faint-hearted. Theatre audiences are adventurers—embracers of experience, both literal and emotional. And theatre audiences understand that plays are not about what happens in them. Plays are about what what happens means. Downstate walks directly into the path of the storm of this moment and is asking us to recognize that societies are not remembered for how they treat their most honored—they are judged by how they treat their most loathed. And Bruce, for all of his satirical darkness, understands that how we answer this question has a ripple effect of its own: on our culture, on our own hearts and, ironically, on the world we leave our children. The National Theatre makes world-class theatre that is entertaining, challenging and inspiring. And we make it for everyone. We stage up to 30 productions at our South Bank home each year, ranging from reimagined classics—such as Greek tragedy and Shakespeare—to modern masterpieces and new work by contemporary writers and theatre-makers. The work we make strives to be as open, as diverse, as collaborative and as national as possible. Much of that new work is researched and developed at the New Work department: we are committed to nurturing innovative work from new writers, directors, creative artists and performers. Equally, we are committed to education, with a wide-ranging Learning programme for all ages in our Clore Learning Centre and in schools and communities across the UK. The National’s work is also seen on tour throughout the UK and internationally, and in collaborations and co-productions with regional theatres. Popular shows transfer to the West End and occasionally to Broadway. Through National Theatre Live, we broadcast live performances to cinemas around the world. National Theatre: On Demand. In Schools makes acclaimed, curriculum-linked productions free to stream on demand in every primary and secondary school in the UK. Online, the NT offers a rich variety of innovative digital content on every aspect of theatre. We do all we can to keep ticket prices affordable and to reach a wide audience, and use our public funding to maintain artistic risk-taking, accessibility and diversity.

Leading up to the first days of rehearsal for Downstate, playwright and Steppenwolf Ensemble Member Bruce Norris sat down with Steppenwolf’s Artistic and Marketing teams to talk about the play. Here are some highlights from the conversation. Edited by Patrick Zakem Patrick Zakem: Can you talk a little bit about the genesis of this play? Bruce Norris: Well, I know a lot of people (myself included) who, over the course of their lives, have been in sexual situations of questionable wisdom. Some have been the “victims” in these situations and others “perpetrators.” And a few years ago, I started doing a lot of reading about the things paroled sex offenders increasingly face—registries, residency restrictions, neighborhood watches, self-appointed

vigilante groups, etc. These are postincarceration punishments, that don’t exist for any other category of criminal. And I also started thinking about how having a common enemy—a universally despised class of criminal (namely the pedophile)—helps the rest of us feel more virtuous about ourselves. And because social media inflames every group response, we can now all anonymously call for their violent deaths, or endorse some gruesome form of retributive justice, often wildly

BRUCE NORRIS ON DOWNSTATE

incommensurate to the crime that’s been committed. I think we’re living through an era of “payback.” The entire 2016 election was apparently one massive act of collective psychological revenge by one group against another, elevating a man pathologically obsessed with avenging himself against his perceived enemies. And—I want to be careful how I say this—even positive social movements like #MeToo run the risk of tipping over into vengeance as those of us on the left attempt to purge ourselves of any stain of ideological impurity. And I fear that what gets left out of the current national conversation is any mention of… forgiveness. We’d prefer to luxuriate in our righteous hatred for each other right now, in a way that feels cruel and grotesque and tribal. So, with all of that, the thought occurred to me—how do we tamp down our retaliatory, visceral responses to these people we so easily despise? After all, pedophiles have to go on with their lives somehow, somewhere, right? And, I thought, to simply observe them going about their lives, living with the consequences of what they’ve done… that would require a pretty radical amount of compassion on the part of an audience. PZ: How do you contextualize this play alongside the rest of your work? BN: I have a brother who lives in New York and when he sees the plays I write he often asks me, “how come you never write about cool people?” I always say “because it wouldn’t be interesting.” But it did get me thinking about, you know, how I often tend to satirize a particular

class of people—the privileged—that I often find despicable. And I thought, “well, who do I extend my sympathy to?” And I thought, “well I extend it to anyone to whom the world would deny sympathy.” I’m not just trying to be contrary or perverse. Because if we’re going to conclude that there’s one group or class people that is wholly disposable, then I think someone ought to be speaking up, a tiny bit, on their behalf. I guess I feel that way because, for some reason, I instinctively dislike consensus. Consensus makes me uncomfortable because it feels like a civilized form of bullying, since it’s never perfect and always manages to marginalize some dissenting voice. In the case of this play, the voices are those of exconvicts who’ve done terrible things about which they have various levels of regret or defiance. And I want to extend compassion to them as well. PZ: What should audiences expect when they enter the theatre? BN: I guess they should expect that the play is going to ask who you’re willing to extend yourself to, or—I don’t want to sound too preachy, but like, give compassion to? Or tolerate? Liberalism—I’ve always thought—is supposed to be about tolerance. Are we able to tolerate the existence of these people? Many among us would prefer that pedophiles be killed. That would be the simple answer—to say these people are sick. They’re monsters. Let’s get rid of them. But we can’t do that. So what if we said instead, these people are human beings, and they’re living in a bad situation of their own making. Now what do we do?

Accessibility at Steppenwolf Committed to providing services and programming that enhance the experience of guests with disabilities, Steppenwolf is proud to feature: • Assistive listening devices in our Downstairs, Upstairs and 1700 theaters. • Audio-described performances, artistic conversations and touch tours of the stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. • Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre

If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby.

hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help. Lost or Found? On-site? Please check in with a member of the house staff. Already left? Call the Front of House office at 312-932-2445. Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheatre. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@ steppenwolf.org.

Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance
