GUARDS AT THE TAJ

WELCOME TO GUARDS AT THE TAJ Every once in a while, we do a show here at Steppenwolf that allows us to reconnect with artists we love. It has taken us years to bring back the two actors in this show, Omar Metwally and Arian Moayed, and I can hardly remember a more joyous reunion. The last time Omar and Arian were with us was in Tony Kushner’s epic, Homebody/Kabul, and friendships made then have only grown deeper as these two incredible artists have gone on to wonderful careers. The roles in this play were written specifically for them and the original production, at The Atlantic Theatre in NYC, was directed by Steppenwolf ensemble member Amy Morton, their fellow Homebody castmate. We all knew we wanted to make a home for Guards at the Taj here at Steppenwolf, because in so many ways the relationships that made it possible were born in this very building. It has been no small feat to coordinate this event and we are thrilled that the day has finally come, for our audiences, for our artists and for this magnificent play.

In Rajiv Joseph’s work, there is always an effortless and enchanting layering of our contemporary world and all of the histories that have come before. There is perhaps no other playwright working today who asks us, so consistently, to understand American life through the lens of not just other times but other cultures as well, all of which weave themselves in and out of the consciousness of his stories and the people who inhabit them. That his plays also do this with such humor and originality is both Rajiv’s special gift and his audience’s great good fortune. When we first read Guards at the Taj, each one of us in the artistic office described it as “one of the most beautiful plays” we had ever read. And I guarantee you that each of us have a very different idea of what “beautiful” means. It is because of Rajiv’s specificity – his understanding and his ability to communicate that understanding – of specific experience, that allows his work to find the universal and so, find us all. We chose to share the play with you because it felt important to engage, head on, with the shocking images of violence that so often permeate our day-to-day lives. That in the play this violence is framed by (and committed in defense of) one of the most astonishing man-made structures in history, is the painful irony that Rajiv asks us to embrace: in a world filled with man’s seemingly limitless capacity for cruelty, how do we find our way back, over and over, to the wonder of life and the beauty of each day?

PLAYWRIGHT RAJIV JOSEPH AND DIRECTOR AMY MORTON ON GUARDS AT THE TAJ Edited by Greta Honold

Leading up to rehearsals for Guards at the Taj, Steppenwolf’s Artistic and Marketing teams had the chance to ask playwright Rajiv Joseph and director Amy Morton some questions about the play. Rajiv, where did this play come from? Rajiv Joseph: My father is from India and I went there a number of times as a child and young adult. When I was ten years old I went to the Taj Mahal and my aunt told me these extraordinary legends about Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor who commissioned the building of the Taj Mahal. As a young kid these legends around the building of the Taj made a huge impression on me and kind of lodged in my brain. In addition, my relatives in India would send me these comic books made in India that highlight the ancient history of India in comic book format so I had all these comic books about the Mughal conquerors: Babur, Humayun, Akbar… and they sat in my comic book box alongside The Incredible Hulk and Batman and Spiderman. They were like superheroes to me as well. And so all these things combined, these comical, bloody and fascinating tales, stayed with me as I became a playwright and created this story of

12 Features

the Taj. I started writing another play about the Taj Mahal about ten years before I started to write Guards at the Taj, and it was a much larger, sweeping and more boring version — I threw it away— and realized later when I still couldn’t get the Taj out of my head that the only two interesting characters in that initial iteration were the two smallest ones, the two guards that just stood there, so I compressed it and took everyone out of it except for them, and wrote Guards at the Taj. This play had its premiere almost exactly three years ago at The Atlantic Theatre, and this production reunites you, Amy, with the original cast. Rajiv and Amy, can you speak a bit about what it means to revisit this play now, with the original group of artists? Collectively you have a deep history together, starting with the fact that the play was written for Arian and Omar. RJ: Not only did I write it for them but they, in many ways, helped me write it. Through many readings and discussions

their thoughts and opinions on the story and characters really guided my process, and so in many ways I feel like we wrote it together. The three of us had the opportunity to go to India together, six months before we started rehearsal at The Atlantic. They had never been there or seen the Taj so we went and saw it and that was a formative and awesome experience for us.

RJ: I forgot about Arian breaking his ribs.

Amy Morton: And I had worked with Omar and Arian in Homebody/Kabul at Steppenwolf in 2003 and we had such a great time that summer so I was really familiar with those guys. Then I read the script and fell in love with it immediately, so I went to New York to meet Rajiv and that meeting went well and I got the job at The Atlantic and I was so bloody excited because this play means a lot to me, and the fact that I got to do it with Omar and Arian was so incredible.

AM: In all the conversations I’ve been having with Steppenwolf staff and designers, I keep thinking, “Oh my God, I get to do this play again, it’s so exciting!” It’s bringing back a lot of memories and I’m very excited to tackle it again. And I hope those guys are too… they better be.

You know, I have a feeling this may be one of the most collaborative plays I’ve ever worked on and part of it was those guys, all three, writer and two actors, being so intimately close to the material for so long. There was so much “figuring this out” together because it was just the two of them up there. Through it all it is an incredibly hard play to do for those actors both physically and emotionally. But you know, this is the work, being in service to the work, and so this was such a personal play to be in service to that all the headache, hard work - and you know Arian literally broke his ribs during The Atlantic production! It was actually all worth it because it was so deeply meaningful and personal to all of us.

AM: Remember that? That was in rehearsal, so he went through the entire process with broken ribs. He ended up sleeping in a BarcaLounger RJ: Which I gave him; I had my recliner delivered to his apartment so he could sleep because he couldn’t sleep on a bed.

Rajiv, you’ve now had three years of audience response and the America we’re in right now feels very different than the America we were in three years ago. Have you noticed or charted a shift in the response to the play? I haven’t yet. But I was in Moscow about two months before our presidential election in a time when we thought the election of Trump was a long-shot if that, and before we totally understood the depth of Russia’s interference in our election. I was over there with the Lark Play Development Center and they were doing a kind of staged reading of Guards at the Taj in Russian and it was awesome, it ended up feeling like a production the way they did it; they were kind of off-book and it was dramatically lit and there was an audience of about 400 people. There was a moment in the play that had never garnered any kind of response in any production that I had seen in the

Features 13

U.S., which is when Humayun says to Babur, “If the king decrees that beauty is dead then beauty is dead.” And Babur says, “Well then fuck the king, beauty shall live.” When the actor did that in Moscow the audience erupted into applause and the hair on the back of my neck stood up and I was like, “Fuck we’re all going to get arrested!” But I was really struck by that moment because this audience was experiencing and receiving this play in a much more heightened state than most American audiences were. And I’m interested to see if the American audience’s reception is going to be dramatically heightened by living in the world we live in now. What do you hope our audiences are wrestling with as they walk away? AM: Well, I guess… for me the play is about how without art, life isn’t worth living. Imagine it not in your life. Literally imagine three hours of your day where you don’t encounter any art. What would the world look like and what would your thought process be throughout the day? All of a sudden when I think of that question all I can see is a grey world. So I guess my invitation to audiences is to think about how you would interact with a piece of art in whatever form during your day. And imagine life without it. And an addendum: can we please put it back in the fucking schools? That’s just me personally. It feels like when shit is hitting the fan, when things aren’t going well the first thing to get punished is art. The first thing to be eliminated, the

14 Features

first thing to be considered subversive and dangerous is art. And that’s really fascinating… why is it so fucking threatening? RJ: The thing I always talk about with this play is what me and the actors spoke a lot about when we were in India seeing the Taj and other Mughal and ancient architecture and art that exists in northern India. Like so much ancient architecture found across the world, when you see it you’re struck by the fact that it was made so long ago, before the benefits of modern technology, and it’s astounding to imagine how these structures were put together in such an archaic age. And the answer that we always fall back on is human misery. It was kind of socially accepted that scores of people would lose their lives or damage their bodies in the service of this creation. We think that that is the difference between today and yesteryear, that we now live in a world where that’s not acceptable. And one might ask, are the things that we make now less beautiful because we are observing human misery a little more closely? I think the answer is both yes and no because my contention is that nowadays the Taj Mahal is in our pocket as our phone. And these are the great creations now being made, but still at great human cost. I think extraordinary constructions are still being made at the expense of humans, but there’s been a shift from grand monuments to tiny monuments that are more and more disposable.

The world’s changing, bro.
