THE

GREAT LEAP

WELCOME TO THE GREAT LEAP China has had basketball almost as long as the United States. Brought to the mainland only a year after its creation in 1890, today almost 300 million Chinese citizens play basketball—just slightly less than the entire population of the United States. The NBA is the most popular sports league in China with millions of viewers annually and it is this backdrop of devotion that sets the stage for Lauren Yee’s electrifying play, The Great Leap, the first of our seven complex, maddening, and beautiful stories to launch our 2019/2020 season. At Steppenwolf, we are always fascinated by plays that explore cultural collisions and unexpected intersections. While a basketball game in 1989 Beijing is at the center of The Great Leap, what happens on the court is less important than the impact and revelations of one set of ideas meeting another. As the internet streams the world into our own homes and a 24-hour news cycle helps us feel informed, our sense of other cultures is actually shrinking, shaped more and more as they are in response to American perceptions of right and wrong. America has always been a culture of immigrants but more and more our story becomes one written by the children and grandchildren of immigrants, young people who are as American as they are anything else and yet can be kept from knowing enough about either. Manford travels to China to learn not only about his heritage but also what it means to be a Chinese-American. It’s a journey that not only changes his future, it rewrites our past. The experiences of these young people and how they create synergy out of these oft-dissenting narratives—whether it is in the story of their own lives or the ones they choose to share with the world—will shape this America. This is Steppenwolf’s first play by an AsianAmerican woman focusing specifically on the Asian-American experience (and the first of two female Asian playwrights this season). Lauren’s already prolific career is full of these important stories, several already championed by our sister theaters in Chicago as all of us strive to create the dynamic, layered and inclusive theatre community this great city deserves. LAUREN YEE ON

THE GREAT LEAP Edited by Patrick Zakem

In advance of the first rehearsals for The Great Leap, playwright Lauren Yee found time to answer some questions about her inspirations for the play and the process of writing it. Here are some highlights from the conversation. Patrick Zakem: Can you talk about the genesis of this play? Where did the idea come from? Lauren Yee: While this play is not my father’s story, it’s a story like it. Growing up, my father, Larry Yee, played basketball—every day, all night, on the asphalt courts and rec center floors of San Francisco, Chinatown. It was the only thing he was good at.

16 Features

He was never good enough that he was going to play for the NBA or even at the college level, but for a 6’1” Chinatown kid from the projects, he was good. Really good. I know this because even today, people still stop him on the street and try to explain to me what a legend he was. They tell me his nickname (Spider), his position (center), and his signature

move (the reverse jump shot). Then they will tell me about China. My dad’s first trip to China was in the 80s playing a series of exhibition games against China’s top teams. At their first game, my dad and his American teammates faced off against a Beijing team of 300-pound seven-footers who demolished my dad’s team. It was the first of many slaughters. PZ: Does your father still play basketball?

PZ: This play marries the political with the personal. Can you talk about the choice to pair basketball with Chinese politics of the 1980s?

LY: Using basketball as a means to explore China-America relations turned out to be an incredibly apt metaphor. China has played basketball almost as long as America has; it’s the most popular sport in China, the “BASKETBALL IS HUGE IN only western sport never AMERICAN IDENTITY— banned by IT’S AN URBAN GAME the Chinese THAT IS ACCESSIBLE government.

Accessibility at Steppenwolf Committed to providing services and programming that enhance the experience of guests with disabilities, Steppenwolf is proud to feature: • Assistive listening devices in our Downstairs, Upstairs and 1700 theaters. • Audio-described performances, artistic conversations and touch tours of the stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. • Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre

If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby.

Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheatre. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@steppenwolf.org.
