LA RUTA

WELCOME TO LA RUTA “(There is a) particular combination of multiple factors that make (Ciudad Juárez) unique for sexual assassination. These include the following: (a) industrialization without safe streets, (b) a criminal justice system with a history of impunity that fuels machista rape murder, (c) a drug war that increased the human trafficking of women by certain organized crime-related elements, and (d) a special geography which includes multiple empty lots without adequate public or private security. Taken together, these complex, multiple, interrelated factors combine to explain why sexual assassination has been a receptive crime in Ciudad Juárez.” Sara Schatz, “Sexual Homicide of Women on the US/Mexican Border” “If you want to rape and murder a girl, there is no better place than Ciudad Juárez.” Anonymous Source Femicide, which is defined as the deliberate killing of women because they are women, is a global phenomenon with startling and alarming worldwide statistics. Isaac Gomez’s powerful and important play, La Ruta, is the story of the women of Mexico’s Ciudad Juárez, an area particularly hard hit by these cases and their aftermath. As unflinching and raw as it is beautiful and embracing, La Ruta gives voice to the women lost as well as those left behind to mourn them and fight, against all odds When I first read Isaac’s play, I was immediately struck by two things: first, Isaac’s deep understanding of how historically engrained environmental threat creates different channels in human relationships and secondly, how those altered relationships can forge structures for survival that can change a society. Because Ciudad Juárez has not only the objective conditions that allow wide-spread femicide but the economic imperative to deny its existence (the government refers to the reports of the disappeared as the Dark Legend), the women of this community have had no choice but to turn the historic oppression that has made these crimes possible on 2 La Ruta

its head. Many have turned to activism, which has given them agency and created a social movement that keeps the voices of the missing in the world. The women of Ciudad Juárez have become warriors where once they were mothers, soldiers where once they were sisters. So, then, have the women of La Ruta and Isaac is their champion. It is painful to feel the necessity to say this, but when the president himself refers to Mexican people as “rapists and murderers”, one feels compelled to state the obvious: femicide is not a Mexican problem. It is a sensibility that permeates every culture, every religion, every class, every race. When the biggest threat to a woman’s life is not a disease but the person with whom she lives, I think that speaks volumes about where we are as a human race. And yet, in the midst of institutionalized powerlessness, carrying the tragedy of inexplicable loss, the women of La Ruta fight on as they raise their voices to all of us, demanding that we listen. This, they are singing, is a song we must hear. Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director

THE MUSIC OF LA RUTA

PLAYWRIGHT ISAAC GOMEZ ON THE VARIOUS SOURCES, HISTORIES AND CONTEXTS OF LA RUTA’S SONGS Edited by Patrick Zakem, Original Translations by Itzel Blancas La Bruja (The Witch) The witch takes hold of me, She takes me to her house … …Oh tell me? Tell me? Oh why don’t you tell me? How many little ones have you sucked dry? In some rural areas of Mexico, there are legends of ghosts and witches. La Bruja (one of Mexico’s oldest traditional songs) warns children to behave—or else the witch will take them and suck out their soul. In La Ruta, it challenges the notion that women in Juárez magically disappear when they are actually being kidnapped. The perpetuators of this violence are real; they aren’t magical creatures (though the government treats them as if they are unable to be held accountable). Son Del Obrero (Worker’s Song) by Gabino Palomares (1975) …You are a worker and I am one too, If we remain separated there will never be a revolution… …I’m in search of a new world without borders and no boss… An example of the Nueva Canción movement (a musical genre characterized by folk styles and socially-charged lyrics), this song and others like it played a profound role in social upheavals in Latin America during the 1970s and 1980s. In the context of maquila (factory) workers, the song is re-contextualized around the 255,000 people (mostly women) who work in Juárez’s 330 maquiladoras under some of the most challenging conditions globally – all for U.S. export.

Cielito Lindo (Lovely Sweet One) by Quirino Mendoza y Cortés (1882) …Sing and don’t cry, Because singing brightens, Lovely sky, the hearts. That beauty mark you have, Lovely sky, next to your lips, Don’t give it to anyone, Lovely sky, because it is mine… This popular song, a Mexican staple, is often played by Mariachi bands and sung by men. The title, a term of endearment comparable to sweetheart, has evolved from a symbol of centuries-old male possessiveness to an emblem of resilience amidst grief and loss. In La Ruta, the “sweet one” refers to missing daughters and the mothers who yearn for them. Siete Soles (Seven Suns) by Rafael Mendoza (2008) …The desert only dried my tears The darkness only killed my dreams I was only following the lure of a mirage Beneath the seven suns I fell into the abyss… Written for the film 7 Soles, this song describing the hardships of desert life is performed in canto cardenche – Mexico’s most haunting musical style. Cardenche refers to a desert cactus with painful, prickly thorns—just as the musical style focuses on pain: emotional and physical. Death is an ever-present theme in cardenche, which rings true in the context of the missing and murdered women of Juárez.

PLAYWRIGHT ISAAC GOMEZ ON LA RUTA Edited by Greta Honold I was born and raised along the border. El Paso, Texas / Ciudad Juárez, to be more precise, which is where La Ruta takes place. Although my upbringing was in El Paso, if you live in a border city, both sister cities are your home. Growing up, we would visit extended family in Juárez almost weekly, and I remember little things that didn’t have significance to me at the time. As a young man, I had the ability to do whatever I wanted, wherever I wanted, without any trouble or guidance or mediation. But any time any of the young women in my family wanted to or needed to do anything, like throw away the trash or go to the corner store down the street, the men would have to accompany them – myself included. At the time, I thought this was something everyone did everywhere; I never knew the reasons why this was happening to my cousins in Juárez. Flash forward to many years later while I was at the University of Texas at Austin, a friend was taking a Chicana Feminism class where she learned about the missing and murdered woman of Ciudad Juárez. She confronted me one day: “Isaac, what the hell? You’re from this city and you never told me this was happening. I don’t understand.” I was shocked and was like, “this isn’t happening in my hometown.” And she said, “Yes, it is. It’s been happening for forever.” I was like, “I don’t think so, no.” So then as any young Mexican would

18 Features

do in moments of distress, I called my mom and told her, “Mom, I just heard about this weird thing today.” She said, “Oh yeah, everyone knows about Las Desaparecidas.” They’re also often referred to as Las Muertas de Juárez – translating to the Missing Girls or the Dead Women of Juárez, respectively. I remember feeling embarrassed more than anything. Everyone knew about it but me. It was the first time that I had to confront, even as a queer Mexican from the border, my ability (as a man) to not have to worry about this thing that every single woman in my life, especially in my hometown, knew about, and were warned about. So then I became obsessed and I needed to go back to Juárez to see it for myself. I called a friend up who was still living in Juárez and went to visit her. The first place we went was a memorial site called Campo Algodonero (which translates to ‘cotton field.’) And it was in this field where two boys playing kickball found eight women who had been mutilated and left buried there in the early 2000s. Since then, it has become an informal memorial site amidst a lack of action from the Mexican Government, created by women whose daughters are still missing, whose sisters are gone, fathers too. At first there were three, then eight, then hundreds of them. Pink crosses, everywhere.

We then went and spent time with this woman whom our central character, Yolanda, is based on. Yolanda sat there and told me the story of her daughter, Brenda, who went missing in 2008. Brenda and I are the same age. She was seventeen when she went missing. She hasn’t come back yet, and Yolanda became the focal point for me both in the telling of the story and in the charge for its message. The impetus for the play is not divorced from the place I come from nor is it divorced from the person who charged me to do this.

commonly referred to in Mexico and other parts of Latin America. Amidst that pain, Marisela became an activist. Everything in the play is real. The names might differ to protect identities, and this play is absolutely not a docu-drama or bioplay by any means. It’s a creative reimagining. But there’s no fiction in any of the major dramatic events of the play or the essence of who these characters are. It’s in how they exchange with one another that is fiction. The reality is, first and foremost, most people don’t know this is happening. For many reasons because of its lack of presence in media and in entertainment and in news. But even to this day it’s still happening. There are about 1,400 known, found women, with maybe one third of them listed as unidentified because they can’t be recognized based on how they were found, with thousands more still missing. How do that many women just go away, and you don’t even notice? How many women have to disappear for you know that they’re gone? How many Mexican women? How many Black girls from the south side of Chicago? The play is speaking to a larger issue that women are facing all over the world. It’s happening in Chicago. It’s happening in New York. It’s happening in Austin. It’s happening everywhere. Once you know, you can’t un-know. You’re going to know forever. You’ll think about it even when you don’t want to. That’s what the women of Juárez, the women I interviewed, want. Don’t forget them. Ever.

you know, “youOnce can’t un-know.

I went on to interview bus drivers who watched women get kidnapped as they were running towards the bus, an ex-convict who was formally convicted of murdering the eight women found in Campo Algodonero (and then acquitted of those charges), women whose sisters are still missing and who are raising young girls in this environment right now, the Editor and Chief of a newspaper there called El Diario that used to prominently report about the missing and murdered women and then randomly one day denounced it completely all together.

You’re going to know forever.

Marisela is also based on a real woman. Marisela Escobedo Ortiz’s daughter, Rubí, was murdered by her boyfriend when she was 16. She went missing, he confessed at trial, told the authorities where to find her - which was dismembered in a trash bag in a nearby dumpster - and after his confession, he was acquitted of all charges, because that’s what happens in a culture of toxic masculinity, or machista cultura as it’s

THE STEPPENWOLF ENSEMBLE Steppenwolf Theatre Company is the nation’s premier ensemble theater. Formed by a collective of actors in 1976, the ensemble of 50 members represent a remarkable crosssection of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling and powerful productions from Balm in Gilead to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf produces hundreds of performances and events annually in its three spaces: the 515-seat Downstairs Theatre, the 299-seat Upstairs Theatre and the 80-seat 1700 Theatre. Artistic programing includes a seven-play season; a twoplay Steppenwolf for Young Adults season; Visiting Company engagements; and LookOut, a multi-genre performance series. Education initiatives include the nationally recognized work of Steppenwolf for Young Adults, which engages 15,000 participants annually from Chicago’s diverse communities; the esteemed School at Steppenwolf; and Professional Leadership Programs for arts administration training. While firmly grounded in the Chicago community, nearly 40 original Steppenwolf productions have enjoyed success both nationally and internationally, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, London, Sydney, Galway and Dublin.

Accessibility at Steppenwolf Committed to providing services and programming that enhance the experience of guests with disabilities, Steppenwolf is proud to feature: • Assistive listening devices in our Downstairs, Upstairs and 1700 theaters. • Audio-described performances, artistic conversations and touch tours of the stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. • Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre

If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Audience Services 312-335-1650 | TTY 312-335-3830 | E-mail access@steppenwolf.org

Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby.

hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help. Lost or Found? On-site? Please check in with a member of the house staff. Already left? Call the Front of House office at 312-932-2445. Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheatre. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@ steppenwolf.org.

Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance

Need to contact a patron during a performance? If you need to contact a patron during a performance in our Downstairs or Upstairs Theaters, please call our Concierge Desk at 312-932-2476. Hours: one hour prior to curtain until 15 minutes after curtain call.
