Welcome to Linda Vista When playwright Young Jean Lee was in residence with us last month for Straight White Men, she spoke at a few of our events about why she wrote her play and what ideas and feelings she was hoping to engage in doing so. She said so many interesting things but one that I can’t shake was that she chose to take on the topic of the naming of a certain group of people that had never suffered naming before. Meaning, while many of us are used to a certain kind of heading (or caption) that describes us–I feel like “woman” is a qualifier that I’m pretty used to–straight white men, at least in this country, have been for a long time the “default human”, as she put it. And she was keenly aware that we are in a moment in time where a shift is taking place and that, for all of us, this naming of something that has historically defied that kind of categorization, was probably going to have some kind of rippling social outcome. Her other point, and perhaps her most salient, was that nobody likes being defined by objectifying characteristics and that a society that continues to insist upon a fractionalizing naming of its citizens is, well, probably in trouble.

Stacy Keach AS Ernest Hemingway IN

Tracy Letts’s Linda Vista is about a straight white man in Young Jean Lee’s moment. That these two radically different dramatists should accidentally end up next to one another on Steppenwolf’s current season is nothing short of a miracle. Because although both writers may be circling the same target, unlike Young Jean, whose project is perhaps more sociological, for Tracy the exercise is deeply personal. And the investigation, although easily as humorous and biting, is for Tracy also a dangerous one, as he crafts a portrait of the unaccountable young man he himself once was, still living in the body of the now 50-year-old man he knows he almost became. Charming, maddening, infantile, enchanting, Wheeler is waking up in a world he both helped create and too long ignored–asked for so little for so long that he has no idea how to stop the freefall that his life has become. More and more, I find myself looking for our shared space in this world–how seemingly not-justdisparate but downright-oppositional experiences can be mined for the common, the communal, the mutual. There are times when my need for that collective is more acute than others and certainly, recently, it has been more of a global concern than a personal one. But as a theatre person, if I’m to be honest, for me it all starts there. At the personal. What makes us cruel or blind to cruelty, what makes us tender and whole-hearted, I believe these checks get written pretty early. And what we don’t know about how we have formed in reaction to early events–or the names we have been given–can make us dangerous not just to ourselves, but to others. And when we are not asked–because it is not expected–that we answer for the events in our lives, well, we–and the people who love us–are probably in trouble. I have loved Wheelers and I have been hurt by them. That they may not feel, at first, the sometimes cataclysmic effects of their actions because they have never felt especially effective themselves is not an excuse. But when the world around them has named them unlikely to do better, and gives them no incentive to try, and yet–finally–they choose to change, well, that feels familiar. And I am okay with reaching out my also-named hand to help them up. Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director

Pamplona BY JIM McGRATH DIRECTED BY ROBERT FALLS

AFTER THE PRIZE COMES THE PRESSURE. Basking in the glory of Pulitzer and Nobel Prize wins, Ernest Hemingway insists his best work is yet to come. Holed up in a hotel with a looming deadline, he struggles to knock out a story about the rivalrous matadors of Pamplona. But his real battles lie outside the bullfighting arena, as he is consumed by the end of his fourth marriage and tormented by the specter of past glories.

population and Vietnamese population. There are almost no white people in Linda Vista, certainly not in the neighborhood or in the apartment complex we’re talking about. It’s not lost on me that the last category of people who should be bitching about anything in this country are white men, especially white men of a certain age, or above a certain economic status. Some of the things Wheeler is in contemplation of reflect his privileged position—for me understanding that is part of the maturation process.

A conversation with ensemble member Tracy Letts

Aaron Carter, Artistic Producer: Tell us a bit about the origins of the piece. Where did it come from? Tracy Letts: I’m never any good at this discussion about where a play comes from— because they come from—I don’t know where they come from, they come from a lot of places, and they come from nowhere. Sometimes I sit down to write a play and I start with a couple of guys, in a room, and they start talking to each other. And then I see if that turns into a play. It never does. (group laughs) It never does! It did with this one. And sometimes, when you’re writing a play, you feel the car start to skid off the road, and you fight to get the car back on the road. But sometimes, you go in the direction of the

skid, you say “well, I’ll just see where this takes me.” And that was the case with this play. So a lot of it was very intuitive. But what it began to evolve into for me was a coming of age story about a 50-year-old man. As the play started to take shape, as Wheeler started to find his voice… the play started to dictate its own form, which is a contemporary comedy. I call this play a comedy. I know it has serious elements and there are serious issues at stake, but for me it’s a comedy. If you ask me to define what a comedy is, I’ll do it poorly. I know there are a lot of jokes, I hope people laugh, and nobody dies and we leave the theatre feeling happy. It’s a contemporary comedy set in a modern city. John Zinn, Director of Marketing and Communications: Why did you choose the setting that you did? Why set the play in California? In San Diego? Tracy Letts: The play takes place in a neighborhood in San Diego that is split demographically between the Latinx

Leading up to the first day of Linda Vista rehearsals, ensemble member and playwright Tracy Letts sat down with Steppenwolf’s Artistic and Marketing teams to talk about the play. Here is an excerpt from the conversation.

Another thing is, Wheeler is from Chicago and he’s displaced. He gave up his home 15 years ago, and I don’t think he ever in the course of the play recognizes that giving up your home is literally a disorienting thing to do. He feels like a guy that has much more of a Chicago vibe than a California vibe. Some of that culture-clash comedy comes from his Chicago-ness versus Minnie, who is a millennial Californian; she’s got such a different set of concerns and values than Wheeler does. And I guess I thought, too, from a purely cosmetic standpoint, if you’ve ever been to San Diego—it doesn’t have the gloss of Los Angeles, it doesn’t feel moneyed and cultured in the way San Francisco does— like any beach community it has a crappy cheeseburger-in-paradise feel. But it also has more days of sunlight than any other city in the US. There’s terrific beauty there. John Zinn: You’ve talked about the Gen X / Millennial gap between Wheeler and Minnie, but we also see Wheeler in conversation with his generational contemporaries and those scenes are very revealing and realistic to a specific moment in one’s life and in one’s relationships. Tracy Letts: One of the points made in the play is you should be able to trade in

old friends for new friends—what’s more valuable to you, old friends or new friends? If you’re not going to change with your old friends or they’re not going to change with you, then what is this relationship you’re stuck in? Are you stuck in a relationship from 30 years ago? Wheeler is stuck; there’s a point that he hasn’t been able to move beyond. I’ve tried to represent him in his most reprehensible moments. We see him creating a lot of havoc but I don’t think he’s a malicious person, I think he’s doing the things he does because he’s lost, not because he’s bad. It’s one of the reasons I love Ian Barford in the part. Ian is sitting very powerfully in his 50s right now. For those of you who aren’t there yet, let me tell you that 50s—there’s a weight to it. On the one hand, it’s very comfortable, I love being in my 50s now, it’s a very comfortable feeling. But on the other hand, it’s an accumulation of a lot of years, and if you’re a person who hasn’t progressed, if you’re stuck… I have a lot of compassion for those guys, and for Wheeler, even though he’s going to challenge us to like him. Casey VanWormer, Audience Services Director: Is there anything else people should be asking themselves while watching or after watching the play? Tracy Letts: I find myself as a white man… deaf to certain things. There’s a point in the play where Anita, who works with Wheeler in the camera shop, says to him “I’m going to go back to school, I think I need to move on,” and he says, “No, good, you should!” I wrote it, meaning it to be an encouraging thing. Wheeler is saying to his friend, “That’s a good move for you, I applaud that.” But then I heard it and out of the mouth of a white man it sounds like, “I give you permission to do that—I sanction your decision.” It is absolutely a moment we’re at in this country,

Features 19

Tracy Letts: That’s a good question, I’ve never really had any kind of plan about the work. It’s not intentional, but when I look back at the work, I always tend to alternate male and female protagonists. I go from a show about a man, to a show about a

Patrick Zakem, Audience Engagement Coordinator: Do you think about how you would situate this play among the body of your work? How it relates to what you’ve been working on recently?

woman… I’m not sure what that’s about. I think the male protagonists of Superior Donuts, Man from Nebraska, and Linda Vista, there’s a commonality there about guys who are stuck, or don’t recognize the pattern they’re in, or guys who don’t have certain emotional access to something they need to move onto the next thing. That’s not a conscious pattern, it’s just because I’m the guy who wrote the plays—it’s in all of them, and it’s probably something I’m working out myself through the work. I don’t know, you try to write different stuff, but probably when you die, they look at it and say, “Oh, it’s the same thing; he just said the same thing over and over again.” It’s probably the same fucking play with words rearranged.

PICTURED: MARK L. MONTGOMERY, DEANNNA MYERS. PHOTO BY SAVERIO TRUGLIA.

right? The light got shone on everything differently after the election; the light got shone on this play a little differently, too. “Wow, that white guy privilege is everywhere.” Everywhere.

Ensemble Spotlight:

Jim True-Frost Member since 1989 Hometown: Greenwich, Connecticut Past Performances

A Summer Remembered Curse Of The Starving Class David Copperfield Ghost in the Machine – Director I Just Stopped By To See The Man Killers Symphony Space’s Selected Shorts The Common Pursuit The Geography of Luck The Grapes Of Wrath The Homecoming The Mesmerist – Director The Pillowman The Playboy Of The Western World

What brought you to Steppenwolf?

In December 1987, I was a junior at Northwestern. I had done three professional productions, and had a fired up ambition and some pretty poor grades to show for it. Rondi Reed cast me as Peter in The Common Pursuit. A few more Steppenwolf roles followed quickly, and I soon joined the ensemble. Thirteen years later I graduated from college.

Which role, at Steppenwolf or elsewhere, gave you the most joy?

It’s impossible to pick a favorite! But I was over the moon with excitement about my second part, in Killers. It was a gritty and wild play in the old Steppenwolf style at the old small theatre with Laurie Metcalf and Bob Breuer. We had a blast. A more recent favorite was The Pillowman. Deep, dark, fulfilling work with good ensemble friends Yasen, Tracy, and Amy Morton directing.

Which role do you wish you could do again, or do you have a dream role?

*

I’ve played Brutus in Julius Caesar at a different theatre and I’d try it again in a heartbeat in a Steppenwolf production.

When you come back to your artistic home at Steppenwolf, what is one of your favorite spots to visit in Chicago? My mom’s house in Evanston, and my sisters’ in Rogers Park and Old Irving Park.

What’s next for you?

It’s been mostly TV work lately. Theatre commitments are difficult since I have two kids and I live In Syracuse, New York. I’ll appear as F. Scott Fitzgerald's editor in a new Amazon series about Zelda Fitzgerald, Z: The Beginning of Everything. I have a good part in a new web series called COLD viewable on go90, a free app.

of a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 41 years and Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 48 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf’s artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theater, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for groundbreaking, innovative work. That work is represented in production photos displayed throughout the theater.

Committed to providing services and programming that enhance the experience of guests with disabilities, Steppenwolf is proud to feature: • Audio-described performances, artistic conversations and touch tours of the stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. • Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops, installed with the help and expertise of Assistive Hearing Systems Ltd. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Audience Services 312-335-1650 | TTY 312-335-3830 | E-mail access@steppenwolf.org

Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.

Lost or Found? On-site? Please check in with a member of the house staff. Already left? Call the Front of House office at 312-932-2445. Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance, fill out the survey inserted in this program or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheatre. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater ? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@steppenwolf.org. Need to contact a patron during a performance? If you need to contact a patron during a performance in our Downstairs or Upstairs Theaters, please call our Concierge Desk at 312-932-2476. Hours: one hour prior to curtain until 15 minutes after curtain call.

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. The theater reserves the right to limit admission of children younger than the age of six. The taking of photographs and the use of any type of recording device is not allowed in the theater during performances and is a violation of state and federal copyright laws. Digital media will be deleted, and tape or film will be confiscated.
