The Unfamiliar Familiar: On Wednesday November 9th, many Americans woke up in a state of shock. How had we so dramatically overlooked the divergent viewpoint of so many of our countrymen? Was our America truly that different than theirs? And why, suddenly, was the fracture so extreme that those of us who had never thought in terms of ‘us’ and ‘them’ were suddenly thrown into a twilight zone of wondering: which, in fact, am I?
DEFIANT REQUIEM:
If there’s a danger in our work as theatre makers, it’s that we can quickly become isolated, a closed loop of communication, simply reflecting back our shared perspective, creating a bubble of sameness that is both comforting and reassuring. This election, in some critical ways, lacerated that bubble and forced a reckoning with our assumptions. Without challenges and questions to our perspective, we run the risk of cutting ourselves off from other points of view that might push us towards a broader understanding of how others navigate our society—a critical vantage point for creators of culture. On its surface, Straight White Men appears to fit right in to a recognizable Steppenwolf narrative: Here is a living room wherein resides a family who, over the course of a holiday weekend, struggles with deep-seated conflict. Familiar territory for us for sure, made all the more familiar by the family’s optics: a white patriarch and his three white sons. What makes Straight White Men unique (and necessary) is the perspective of outsider held by playwright and director Young Jean Lee. As a Korean American, Young Jean approaches the well-known theatrical archetype from a position outside the action, looking in at behavior and motivation that is unknown to her with an almost anthropological sense of inquiry. Often, when an accomplished artist holds a mirror up to our own situation they help us to both recognize and laugh at ourselves and, perhaps, even question why it is that we behave in the way we do. But Young Jean takes it a step further: by creating a frame and an environment surrounding the production that is clearly controlled by the outsider, she first challenges the comfort that comes from a known situation, only to return us to the trope of the familiar—in a sense, waking us up and insisting that we pay attention in a different kind of way. We KNOW these people and, at the same time, through her, are seeing them for the first time. The unfamiliar familiar. It is only through this process, seeing ourselves through the lens of another, that we can truly begin to recognize our motivations and assumptions and, with that recognition, work towards change. At Steppenwolf we are looking hard at ourselves these days. We are reviewing our position in the theatrical community and examining our role in the world. We are in conversation with not just what work it is we produce, but also how we produce it and for whom. We are 41 years away from those days in the church basement, and while our founding principal of great ensemble theater remains our primary goal, we also have to acknowledge that the world around us and how the community we serve has changed. The role of the artist is to make us see our world anew—as though for the first time. Since moving to Chicago, they have been seen as Minnie Fay in The Matchmaker (Goodman Theatre); Octavius in Julius Caesar (Writers Theatre); Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (First Folio Theatre); as well as on stage at Salonathon and the Chicago Fringe Festival. They are represented by Gray Talent.

Though they rarely perform, Elliott has designed lights for a number of New York and Berlin based performing artists such as luciana achugar, niv Acosta, Jess Barbagallo, Lorene Bouboushian, Jen Rosenblit, Anna Sperber, The Builders Association, Mariana Valencia, Enrico Wey and others. Elliott is currently collaborating with Marissa Perel to develop a practice and platform for embodied otherness, specifically for artists of color, trans and gender nonconforming artists and artists with disabilities.
Brian Slaten (Matt) is
honored to be making his Steppenwolf Theatre Company debut. Alan Wilder (Ed), an
ensemble member since the dawn of Steppenwolf, continues to be the actor with the record for most-appearances-onstage in this company’s history. Willy Loman, Stanley Kowalski, Hamlet, The Elephant Man, Sky Masterson, Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Rum-TumTugger in Cats, Will Rogers, Mark Twain, Charles Lindberg, Sir Francis Drake, Winston Churchill, General Patton, Sergeant York, Cap’n Crunch, Alexander the Great, Helen of Troy, Confucius, Sitting Bull. These are some of the character Alan Wilder has yet to portray but is planning to bring to you on a Steppenwolf stage in the near future.

Young Jean Lee (Playwright,
Director) has written and directed ten shows in New York with Young Jean Lee’s Theater Company and has toured her work to over thirty cities around the world. Her first short film, Here Come the Girls, was presented at The Locarno International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival and BAMcinemaFest. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, two OBIE Awards, a Prize in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a PEN Literary Award, a United States Artists Fellowship, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award and a Doris Duke Artist Residency.
Jessica L. Fisch (Associate Director) Jessica is so pleased to be back at Steppenwolf where she was the assistant director on The Motherf**ker with the Hat. Jessica was a resident director at Ensemble Studio Theater, the Playwrights Horizons Directing Resident, a member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab and the founding Artistic Director of Down Payment Productions. She is now based in Chicago where she is a director and educator. Jessica received her MFA from Northwestern University. David Evans Morris (Scenic Design) makes
original performance work and scenographic environments for the theater. Previous work with Ms. Lee includes Untitled Feminist Show,
regularly with Target Margin Theater, Taylor Mac, Clubbed Thumb (Affiliated Artist), Les Freres Corbusier (Associate Artist) and HERE, where he has twice been a Resident Artist. David has received a Princess Grace Fellowship, a Hewes Design Award nomination, and had his designs included in the Prague Quadrennial. He holds degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle and Williams College, where he is currently an Associate Professor of Theatre.
Enver Chakartash (Costume Design) is a
costume designer for theater, dance and film. With Young Jean Lee his credits include A Meaning Full Life, the original production of Straight White Men and additional costumes for We’re Gonna Die with David Byrne. Other credits include Citizen (Reggie Wilson/Fist & Heel Performance Group); Ghost Rings, Ancient Lives, House of Dance, Seagull (Thinking of You) (Tina Satter/Half Straddle); Boner Killer, A Ride On The Irish Cream (Erin Markey); B-Side, The Town Hall Affair, The Room, Early Shaker Spirituals and Early Plays (The Wooster Group). Film credits include Tony Oursler’s Imponderable, which recently screened at MoMA, New York.
Sarah Hughey (Lighting Design) returns
to Steppenwolf Theatre Company where she designed The Wild, Saturday Night/Sunday Morning and reWilding Genius (Garage Rep 2014). In Chicago, she has designed at Writers Theatre, Lookingglass Theatre Company , Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens Theater, Court Theatre, About Face Theatre, Steep Theatre, Silk Road Rising (Resident Designer 2012-14), American Blues Theater (Artistic Affiliate) and many others. She won a Jeff Award for Scorched (Silk Road Rising), was the 2013 recipient of the Maggio Emerging Designer Award and holds an MFA from Northwestern University, where she also teaches.
Jamie McElhinney (Sound Design) is a
New York-based sound designer. Selected works include Taylor Mac’s A 24 Decade History of Popular Music (St. Ann’s Warehouse); Young Jean Lee’s We’re Gonna Die (Lincoln Center and Bios 13

Chris Giarmo (Original Music & Remixes)
has previously sound designed Young Jean Lee’s Untitled Feminist Show (Walker Arts Center, Baryshnikov Arts Center). He is the resident composer of NY-based theater company Half Straddle, where his credits include Ghost Rings (New York Live Arts) and Ancient Lives (The Kitchen). He’s performed with, composed music for and music directed pieces with Big Dance Theater since 2005: Alan Smithee Directed This Play, Supernatural Wife (Brooklyn Academy of Music), Man in a Case (Hartford Stage). He has also scored the upcoming documentary Front Door/Blue Sky and is the creator of Kimberly Clark, a drag queen beauty blogger on YouTube.
Mike Farry (Dramaturg) began working with Young Jean Lee sixteen years ago and has served as dramaturge for all of her productions. Faye Driscoll (Choreographer) is a Bessie Award-winning choreographer hailed as a “startlingly original talent” by the New York Times. She is a recipient of a 2016 Doris Duke Award and a United States Artist Fellowship. Her most recent project, Thank You For Coming: Play, premiered at the Wexner Center for the Arts and BAM in fall 2016. Laura D. Glenn (Stage Manager) is proud

Christine D. Freeburg (Assistant Stage Manager) returns to Steppenwolf Theatre Company where her credits include Visiting Edna, Constellations, The Flick, John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, The Herd, Airline Highway, Tribes, The Motherf**ker with the Hat, Good People, The March, Sex With Strangers, American Buffalo (also at McCarter Theatre), The Tempest, The Seafarer, The Diary of Anne Frank, after the quake and Cherry Orchard. Other Chicago credits include Stones in His Pockets (Northlight Theatre); The Vanishing Twin, In The Eye of The Beholder, Arabian Nights (Lookingglass Theatre Company); Hamlet, Fraulein Else, Scapin (Court Theatre); Once on This Island, Madame Butterfly, Old Wicked Songs, Violet and many more (Apple Tree Theater). Christine is an adjunct faculty member at The Theatre School at DePaul University and spent nine summers stage managing at Weston Playhouse. She is happily married to Thom Cox and the proud mother of Joan Marie.

David Schmitz (Executive Director) has worked at Steppenwolf Theatre Company for 11 years, serving in the role of Director of Finance and Administration, General Manager and currently as Executive Director. Prior to working at Steppenwolf, David was the General Manager at Lookingglass Theatre
Company, Associate Artistic Director of Stage Left Theatre and Business Manager at the entertainment agency Adair Performance. Currently, he serves as Vice President of the Board for The House Theatre of Chicago as well as on the boards of the League of Chicago Theatres and Arts Alliance Illinois. David is a former board member for the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce and has worked as a strategic planning, business practices, finance and hiring consultant for numerous Chicago organizations, including The House Theatre of Chicago, The Hypocrites and Stage Left Theatre, among others. He holds a BA in theatre from the University of Northern Colorado, an MFA from the Theatre Conservatory at the Chicago College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University and a Certificate in Non Profit Management from Roosevelt University.

the Steppenwolf ensemble in 2005 and was awarded the 2008 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for August: Osage County (Steppenwolf, Broadway, London). She was nominated in 2011 in the same category for The Motherf**ker with the Hat (Public Theatre, Labyrinth Theater). Straight White Men isn’t “about” privilege or attempting to reveal anything new about it or solve it. I was more curious about the question, “If I woke up tomorrow and I was a straight white man, what would I do?” That’s where the existential crisis came up for me, because it would be one thing if I woke up as a straight white man who never thought about his identity and enjoyed his privilege unthinkingly—that might feel kind of good. But if I were to wake up with my own brain in a straight white male body, it would be completely problematic. So it was less that I was trying to create sympathy for straight white male identity, than I was trying to inhabit that identity as a woman of color. Straight White Men is designed to make audiences notice their own responses and think about their relationships to their own privilege.

Greta Honold: Was there something specific that inspired your writing of the play? A long unanswered question, an aha moment, an image? Young Jean Lee: When starting a play, I ask myself, “What’s the last show in the world I would ever want to make?” Then I force myself to make it. I do this because going out of my comfort zone compels me to

challenge my assumptions and find value in unexpected places. I feel a lot of resistance towards the idea of identity-politics art, which is why I make so much of it. For Straight White Men, I asked myself, “What’s the last identity I would ever want to make an identity-politics show about?” Lucas Hnath: I’ve heard you say this before about writing the last show in the world you would ever want to make. I love that as a frame for finding the play that you most need to write. This always made me want to ask you though: what’s the first show in the world you would ever want to make? If you were to just stay in the center of your comfort zone, what would that play be? YJL: The center of my comfort zone would be trying to imitate someone else’s play that I love. Unfortunately that never works, so it’s not an option for me.
LH: And so what have been the responses from audience members? Any interesting trends in how they think about their relationship to their privilege after watching the play? Maybe that question is way too broad, because I imagine there’s a great deal of variation within any given audience population.

Playwrights Lucas Hnath and Young Jean Lee have busy schedules, full of writing, rewriting, workshopping, teaching, traveling, rewriting some more. So Audience Engagement Creative Producer Greta Honold caught them on email and over several weeks the three developed an impressive email thread! Here is an excerpt from their conversation, focused on Young Jean Lee and Straight White Men.
YJL: It’s not a play with a clear message, so what I’ve seen the most is people feeling bothered or upset afterwards, and not always knowing why. Anger is a common response. People always stay for the talkbacks because they want to figure out what just happened to them and why they’re feeling this way. One person said, “Why did the playwright do this to us?” It always strikes me that an audience can spend 3/4 of a play laughing their heads off
and having a great time, and then be so bothered at the end. People have told me the play has prompted lots of conversation and introspection. LH: How many different cities have you been in with Straight White Men? I’m curious if you’ve noticed interesting variances in audience response and if the play needed to recalibrate with respect to the reception. YJL: I think nine different cities. People laugh a lot more in the U.S. than in Europe, and get more angry about the ending. They really don’t like it that there’s not a happy resolution, and that no secrets are revealed that explain everything. European audiences are much less attached to conventional theater structures and tend to like the ending more. It’s a pretty American play, so they don’t always get all the jokes. The only adjustment I’ve had to make is making sure the actors enunciate a little better in Europe so that people can follow what they’re saying better. GH: Did the creation of this piece come about in a manner typical to you and your writing process, or was the development of the play unique in any way? YJL: With all my shows, I cast the show first, and then write it in collaboration with the performers, my artistic team, and workshop audiences. Normally when I have conversations about identity with female, queer, or minority cast members, we end up with an avalanche of intense political material to dig into. But the conversations with straight white male actors didn’t

generate the same kind of material, because they had spent so much less time thinking about straight white male identity. So starting very early on, we opened up the conversation to other collaborators of diverse identities and backgrounds. The character of Matt came out of a workshop that I was doing at a university. The students, who were very diverse, were extremely hard on straight white men. So I asked them to make a list of all the things they wished straight white men would do, which included things like keeping quiet and staying out of the way. Then I took that list and created Matt. Interestingly, they all hated him, because they felt he was a loser for not behaving the way a “normal” straight white male should. And that’s what made me realize that, in spite of all these social-justice values, in our peer group, being a loser is worse than being a jerk. It kind of revealed our continuing investment in the patriarchy. LH: Oh that’s a great story. So in the course of working on the play, you discover this really intriguing idea. Does that idea find its way back into the play? And if so, how did you incorporate it into the play in such a way that might allow the audience to encounter the same discovery you encountered. YJL: Yes, it’s in the play, and it’s there for the audience to find, but not everyone sees it. LH: You’ve sort of created a 21st century Joint Stock approach to build plays that even goes so far as to use Facebook to do a kind of crowdsourced research. That work of crowd-sourcing some of your research

via Facebook--I’ve always wondered, on a really practical level, how do you take in all of that information? And have you discovered surprising pros and cons to working that way? YJL: There are no cons to it for me. I’ve gotten so used to picking out all the useful ideas and ignoring the rest that it’s like being really experienced in panning for gold or something. Maybe my background in academic research has helped. I can go through 70 pages of notes relatively quickly and pick out what I need. GH: Both of your plays have now received multiple productions. What is it like revisiting your plays in the context of current events? Do meanings change as time passes? YJL: When the play premiered, I think people had a hard time understanding it. I think the idea of straight white maleness as an identity seemed irrelevant or baffling to most people. Audiences would tend to focus on the family dynamics and tune out any political content. Now, post Trump’s election, suddenly a bunch of people really get the play. I think audiences will listen more closely now than before. The play is an attempt to hone in on a particular problem within cultural politics that has now come glaringly to the fore, with disastrous consequences. LH: Yes, similar to what Young Jean observed, there’s been a shift in frame of reference. Since the election, I’m being asked to speak about the play in context of one
political side’s inability to see the points of view of the opposing political side. I think that means that people are moving away from seeing the play as being exclusively about religion and more about communication or about the trouble that occurs when you’re not able to sufficiently account for why you believe what you believe. GH: Young Jean, you’ve created a very unique and intentional theatrical frame for Straight White Men. Can you speak a bit about what you’re doing with this framing, and its intended effect on the audience? YJL: I had never written a straight linear play before and had no interest in doing so, but I saw the traditional three-act structure as the “straight white male” of theatrical forms, or the form that has historically been used to present straight white male narratives as universal. And I thought it would be interesting to explore the limits of that form at the same time as its content— to bring the two together into one big nightmare. I also built a non-traditional framework around this naturalistic piece. I tried to create a pre-show environment with music that would make someone like me feel comfortable and at home (loud hiphop with raunchy lyrics by female artists). And I think it worked. Wherever we’ve done the show, some audience members— definitely not all, but a lot of them—have gotten very upset, because they didn’t feel comfortable in that environment. They felt that the music was aggressive toward them, and when they tried to make it stop and no one would comply with their requests, they
got extremely angry. It really highlighted the privilege of our audiences. And I added a gender nonconforming non-straightwhite-male character to be the announcer at the beginning of the show and to do the transitions (which are lit) to show that a nonstraight-white-male was running the show. LH: What did you identify as being the hallmarks or essential elements of the “traditional three-act structure”? And what are the limits of that form? And do you depart from the form/tradition in places other than the pre-show or scene transitions? And if so, were you consciously doing so? YJL: For me, the biggest thing was that the characters had to stay within the believable human bounds of consistency. And there had to be some kind of linearity to it storywise. The limits of the form is that you can’t have the characters suddenly come out and confront the audience directly and say things they want the audience to hear. Everything has to happen through identification with fictional characters. I feel like I departed from tradition at the end, since nobody got shot or killed themselves or revealed a dark secret or solved all their problems.

What’s next for you?
Next up is the film LadyBird, written and directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Saoirse Ronan. I got to act with Tracy Letts for the first time in all these years! I’ll also be appearing on Broadway this April through July at the Golden Theater in New York in A Doll’s House Part 2 written by Lucas Hnath, directed by Sam Gold and co-starring Chris Cooper.

I can’t say there’s been any one role that’s brought me the most joy. They all present different challenges and rewards, although it’s a real rush when you have a great guaranteed laugh line coming up in a scene like a 16” softball and you swing and connect and get the laugh from the audience— instant gratification!
Which role do you wish you could do again?
I’ve repeated a role on stage twice in my career—All My Sons and The Other Place. It’s interesting to re-explore a part after a few years. You have a history with it, having spent hundreds of hours studying it (even in performance), but you’ve also had new life experiences since that time and those can influence your perspective. And, you’re performing with a different cast and that automatically changes your own performance.

Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops, installed with the help and expertise of Assistive Hearing Systems Ltd. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.

The taking of photographs and the use of any type of recording device is not allowed in the theater during performances and is a violation of state and federal copyright laws. Digital media will be deleted, and tape or film will be confiscated.
