THE FATE OF THE WORLD DEPENDS ON CHEMISTRY.
WELCOME TO YOU GOT OLDER There is a scene in Clare Barron’s touching and beautiful play, You Got Older, where a group of siblings sit together in the hospital room of their father and engage in the casual but loaded banter that only people with significant and meaningful history can enjoy. The seemingly simple scene—its rhythms and tones as familiar to me as the sound of my own voice—is so authentic and real that it created in me the kind of “howdid-she-do-that” wonder usually reserved for high-wire acts and magic tricks. At Steppenwolf, we are at our best when we are able to marry our commitment to truth in performance with writing that understands not just its themes and ideas but its heart and its humanness. Clare’s work is steeped in just this kind of deft chemistry: she is, to me, a Steppenwolf writer. I read You Got Older at the request of Jonathan Berry, one of our Artistic Producers here at the theatre and a longtime colleague of mine. I met Jon when I was first on staff at Steppenwolf and he was an intern in the artistic office. I’m not sure what it was about him—frankly, I barely knew what I was doing at the time so my focus was usually solidly on my own reflection and whatever current mess I had found myself in—but somehow I noticed him, thankfully, and thankfully, he received me and we became fast friends. Since that time, we have spent a lot of time sitting next to each other, in rehearsal rooms, classrooms and meetings and I have watched him grow into a wonderful and gifted theatre maker as well as an invaluable partner here at Steppenwolf. Oddly, neither our long history nor the true depth of my affection for him makes me easier on him or his suggestions and I pushed him hard to defend the play, because although the skill and profundity of it is inarguable, its subject matter is decidedly generational in nature and I questioned its relevance to, well, me. It is not lost on me that the moment I was in when I met Jon was probably not unlike the moment in which Mae finds herself in You Got Older. This is that moment in life when you are just successful enough for no one to worry about you but just lost enough for people to feel sorry for you—a moment not unfamiliar to anyone whose temperament leans toward the melancholic or self-dramatizing. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that it wasn’t that I was past the phase of life so achingly brought to life in this play, but that it was still alive enough in me to be easily and painfully recalled when drawn by a writer as skillful as Barron.

Good plays look at the hard moments in our lives and they do so unflinchingly. Great plays look at those same moments with equal bravery but also with compassion—not just for the characters but also for those of us bearing witness. Kind of like how lifelong friends help us look at ourselves and the blind spots we construct to get from day to day. I am grateful to Jonathan for his patience and his passion and all of us in the audience tonight will be better for his conviction. But mostly I am grateful for the friendship of a person much younger than myself, with whom I share significant and meaningful history, for helping me remember. Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director

wait until you’ve made it through to the other side and have some perspective. For me, I was writing to survive, I was writing as a form of therapy, and I think it really ended up influencing the DNA of the play. No one in the play understands what’s happening to them. They don’t know if it’s the beginning or the end of it; they don’t know if it’s going to get better or worse. And they don’t have the words to talk about it yet. It really is a snapshot of how confused my brain was at the time, and yet I hope there’s something valuable in its rawness. The play depicts the beautiful push/ pull of being in your early 30’s and still desiring to be taken care of, while recognizing that there is the pressingin of very adult requirements.
PLAYWRIGHT CLARE BARRON ON YOU GOT OLDER
I wrote this play when I was 27, imagining 31. Now that I’m actually here I can very much relate to that feeling of being at the end of “the free-spirit runway.” That point in your life where you suddenly realize that financial stability and retirement savings aren’t just phrases your dad says for fun. It starts to get harder to live your life alone and not have a partner to help you. Friend circles get smaller, etc. It can be kind of lonely.
Edited by Greta Honold
This play has an embarrassingly autobiographical origin story: my dad got diagnosed with stage four cancer and my boyfriend of five years dumped me a couple weeks later, and he was also my boss so he fired me, and I ended up going back home to spend time with my family for part of my dad’s treatment. I was still relatively new to playwriting at the time, and I had just received my very first commission to write a play about a woman scientist who had discovered a

prehistoric fish. Everyone in the fish play kept getting sick with cancer, and so I was like, “Okay, maybe I need to write about something else.” I had to write another play for this writers group, and I told them: “I think the only thing I can write about right now is my break-up and my dad’s cancer.” And thankfully, they said: “Okay.” It was a really weird, delirious writing process for me. You know, I feel like normally when people talk about writing while they’re going through hard times they sort of advise you to

Where did this story come from?
Also, your parents start getting sick. When my dad got sick, two of my best friends’ dads were diagnosed with stage four cancer at the same time. It felt like an epidemic—all the Dads in all the world had cancer. My dad amazingly survived, but my friends’ dads horribly didn’t. The experience of going through treatment, making decisions, and taking care of our parents became a sort of rite of passage. For me, it was
the moment where I feel like I became an adult. I had delayed marriage and children and all the traditional markers of adulthood, but this was something I couldn’t push back. I feel like our parents’ mortality is such a terrifying, unspeakable thing. Some people have to face it much sooner than others. But it’s coming for all of us and when it comes, it changes you. Can you talk a bit about the depictions of sex and sexuality in the play? I always love to write about the body. The body is always really important to me onstage and in theater. And I’m always really invested in writing about female sexuality, female desire and the ambiguity of female sexual experiences. I think in our culture and also in our hearts, we have very few representations of female libido and female-led desire, like really what women want and what turns us on and how we function. I remember reading Hemingway and these great male writers… someone gave me Henry Miller’s novel Quiet Days in Clichy when I was 15 years old, and that book, if you don’t know it, is basically just dick dick dick dick dick dick dick. It’s about young male artists having sex with a ton of women and I remember at that time I was really virginal and conservative in a lot of ways and I didn’t really know how sex worked and I still remember the description of this guy shoving his half limp penis into a prostitute from behind. And so, that’s the kind of thing I was getting as a young girl, that this is high art. Like these explorations, these depictions, this is great art. But it felt conversely that when women tried to do the same exploration it was considered

“too much,” like they were taking up too much space or being raunchy. I remember at some young age, maybe in college, my teacher was making fun of an artist who had put her period blood into her art. To him, it was like the stupidest thing that someone could do, and I remember being like, “why is that so stupid?” And since then I have tried to put period blood into almost every one of my plays. You’re an actor as well. Can you talk about how that informs your work as a writer? I think a lot about what the body can do onstage and what can only be done in a theater, and I think that comes from my years spent acting. I also write parts that I would want to play! Which is maybe a very narcissistic thing to do!!! Female characters doing things that I would want to do onstage. Also, I’m drawn to work that is a bit of a feat of endurance. The role of Mae in this play is a very exhausting role, [emotionally and physically]. You’re in every single scene. In many ways, the play is sort of like Mae’s fever dream. It’s expressionistic. Time and space are fluid, and we’re really following Mae’s emotional experience more than any sort of “plot.” With Dad, we’re cut-off from his private thoughts and fears. We only get to see what he chooses to share with his daughter. We get the external picture. With Mae, we get everything. Her emotion propels us through the play and changes its landscape. But also, the play works on her in a sort of relentless way. It’s a physical dance she does that’s exhausting. You maintain a playful tone throughout,

in part because of the unexpected proximity of moments of heartbreak and despair right next to really hilarious moments and tender moments. Is that intentional, or is that something that just sort of happened? I think it’s related to how I work. I write super impulsively—whatever is coming out of me at that point in time is what’s going in the play. With You Got Older, I was writing all these father-daughter scenes, and I was also writing a bunch of weird Cowboy fantasies. I kept saying to people, “I don’t quite know how, but I think these are part of the same play.” So I put them together and played with the juxtaposition of the two things, until it started to make sense. I also love assignments and formal constraints. The first father-daughter scene where they talk about the peppers came out of an assignment to write the most boring scene I possibly could. The hospital scene came out of a desire to have a big group scene in the middle of the play. So, it’s a bunch of randomness, weird ideas, dreams that come to me, and then some formal shaping that create a kind of patchwork quilt that is the play. In terms of emotional tone, I think despair and hilarity live right next to each other. I’ll never forget my mom telling me a story about an older friend who passed away. She had prosthetic legs, and her prosthetics got stuck in the trunk of her husband’s car, and try as they might, they couldn’t get them out. They were both laughing to tears. Death and grief can be strange and funny. Moments of tenderness come immediately after moments of cruelty. We’re never feeling exactly what we “should be” in any given moment.

Thrilling and powerful productions from Balm in Gilead to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf produces hundreds of performances and events annually in its three spaces: the 515-seat Downstairs Theatre, the 299-seat Upstairs Theatre and the 80-seat 1700 Theatre. Artistic programing includes a seven-play season; a twoplay Steppenwolf for Young Adults season; Visiting Company engagements; and LookOut, a multi-genre performance series. Education initiatives include the nationally recognized work of Steppenwolf for Young Adults, which engages 15,000 participants annually from Chicago’s diverse communities; the esteemed School at Steppenwolf; and Professional Leadership Programs for arts administration training. While firmly grounded in the Chicago community, nearly 40 original Steppenwolf productions have enjoyed success both nationally and internationally, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, London, Sydney, Galway and Dublin.

Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre
If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby.
