The

Night Alive The more unusual and strange the things that happen are, the more unexpected the audience will find them, too… So it’s always good that every couple of pages, the audience really doesn’t know what’s happening and why it’s happening… I like a play to be quite messy and even to sort of test the audience’s patience sometimes. —Conor McPherson The Night Alive is the fourth of Conor McPherson’s plays that Steppenwolf has produced. A common thread in the plays is the specter of the supernatural. Whether the ghost stories of The Weir, the dawning realization in The Seafarer that we’re watching the Devil onstage, or ghosts of John’s past in Dublin Carol, we are kept off-balance by the sense that the world of Conor’s plays is surrounded by another dimension that, at some moment, penetrates the quotidian world and produces a transformation. It is through those unguarded moments—often, in his plays, in drink and in dream—that characters confront a truth of self that has hovered like a shadow over their lives. The confrontation can be an entrance into grace, into redemption, or at least self-acceptance. I love that Conor talks about how the magic of theater cooperates in the process of waking the unconscious. What is the stage, after all, but a platform for making the imagination visible? We are, in a sense, dreamers when we come to the theater—we mute the cares of our own life to receive the imaginative world of the stage which is mutable and strange. Like the characters

6 Welcome

in his play, our guard is down and the supernatural has a chance to enter and speak its truth. The situation of the play is fairly simple: Tommy, a middle-aged man estranged from his wife and two teenage children, is living in a run-down rented room in his uncle Maurice’s house, who, with his wife helped to raise Tommy as a boy. Tommy is financially strapped and makes his living selling odd lots—acquired who knows how?—and doing odd jobs with his friend, Doc. The play opens as Tommy helps a young woman, Aimee, into his room. Aimee has been beaten and Tommy has come to her aid on the street. I think Conor McPherson is the master of male grief and regret. The irony of Tommy reaching out to Aimee is that we learn early in the play in a phone conversation with his wife Suzanne that his own daughter is in trouble and that Tommy has been reluctant to contact her. Tommy cannot bring himself to help his daughter—a young woman already in his life for whom he has real responsibility. The troubled history of his relationship with his wife and daughter is infinitely more dangerous than the anonymity of his relationship with Aimee. And so, perhaps, Aimee is the surrogate for the women in his life with whom Tommy cannot connect. As we learn more about Aimee, we understand that McPherson has layered the character with several important aspects of the feminine: she is young, near in age to his daughter; Tommy and she spend a night in the same bed (after his having paid

her for sexual contact); he is awakened when she cries out in a dream and calls her by his wife’s name, Suzanne; and finally there are allusions to a child that Aimee has apparently given up. It’s possible to read the play through an archetypal lens: Aimee is, in this reading, a potent carrier of multiple female identities. McPherson has cannily constructed in Aimee the overdetermined feminine: daughter, whore, wife, mother. For the men in the play, each grieving the loss of a woman in their lives, the entrance of Aimee into their world is catalytic—their relationships, which in some sense have been accommodations to the loss of the feminine, shift and rearrange. Tommy’s gesture to save Aimee is profound: some part of him knows that he is being called to offer shelter to the feminine. Yes, the actual women in his life, but more the feminine aspect of his own nature, the “sweetness” that Maurice saw in him as a child. Tommy is living a lop sided life—the nurturing that his wife or daughter might call up in him is attenuated but alive still, in his desire to save Aimee. Late in the play, Maurice, mourning his wife Maura, confronts Tommy for not attending her memorial mass. He tells him he is disappointed, disgusted by Tommy’s behavior with Aimee and it opens onto a confession. On the day Maura fell on the ice in a blow that eventually killed her, Maurice admits: “She wasn’t talking to me, you see, so I didn’t offer her my hand and anyway I was already down the road before I realized it was icy and I just heard it—smack. And I turned around and there she was. Do you know what she said? She said ‘Maurice’. And I never felt so…” He’s attempting to arouse Tommy to the

preciousness of his family: “You don’t know how lucky you are. You have two beautiful children and what do you do? You piss on them! Fuck-arsing around with young ones…” The problem is intimacy. The great terror of loving and failing haunts both men. In a kind of delightful surprise, it’s Maurice, whom we meet as a crabby and cantankerous presence, who offers Tommy wisdom and, through it, great compassion. He recollects the “sweetness” he knew in Tommy as a boy, calling him to a manhood that asks him to cherish his fragile and complicated bonds to his own children. It would be unfair to reveal the end—it’s much too pleasurable to experience the mysteries that Conor McPherson calls into play. But I encourage you, in watching the play, to allow yourself an expansive mind. As Conor says, unusual and strange things happen in the play and if we allow ourselves, we begin to follow a logic that is more closely aligned to dreaming. A logic of the unconscious processes which are intuitive, emotional, archetypal. There is a great deal in play in The Night Alive (and just think of that—what is dreaming but the night alive?). I recommend the great pleasure of allowing yourself, as the playwright says, “not to know what is happening for a couple of pages” in order to sink into great and meaningful depths that Conor navigates.

Aaron Carter, Director of New Play Development, spoke with playwright Conor McPherson and director Henry Wishcamper about their approach to The Night Alive. Following is an edited portion of their conversation.

20 FEATURES

A a r o n C a r t e r : The two of you

have worked on several projects together. What sustains that repeated collaboration? C o n o r Mc P h e r s o n : It’s always

been very enjoyable and Henry to my mind is great with new plays and great with actors.

A C : Henry, what is it about your approach

that makes you good with new plays?

HW : I love the challenge of new plays. Conor is a writer who, when he sees something that an actor is doing, his initial response is “Oh I love what you did,” and he will write something just out of inspiration from that. I feel like my directorial approach is similar in that it’s about responding to what I’m seeing and adding to it, rather than having some idea of what something ought to be and putting that onto the actors. A C : Henry, on your recent trip to Dublin

you and Conor visited Phoenix Park. Did visiting the play’s location reveal anything to you? Conor, why set the play there? C M : Well, I never really know where a

play’s setting comes from. That’s usually subconscious really. James Joyce used that particular area where the city meets the park quite a lot. It’s an in-between kind of place that is very evocative. At the same time I think a lot of the scenes in the play take place at in-between kinds of times of day: you know, at dusk and evening. It’s that kind of feeling where just everything seems a little bit hazy and unreal. So I guess that’s what that area seemed to offer to me.

HW : I guess I had this fantasy that I would go there and sort of see the people of the play living in that neighborhood. And that wasn’t really the case. In the area around the park there are these really beautiful old houses that have clearly fallen into some level of—not quite disrepair. They were once quite glorious houses and now they have been split into flats. Conor was talking about how in many of them whole families live in these small flats. You could see the number of doorbells that were attached to these small houses. That part of the play gained a much more tangible reality for me in terms of seeing how people were using those houses in that neighborhood. A C : Conor, can you tell me about the title

of the play?

C M : I was trying to come up with

something that represented something to do with the dusk. There’s a bit in James Joyce’s book in Finnegan’s Wake where he uses this Sanskrit word sandhya, which means a holy time of prayers at dusk. But it seemed very pretentious to use a Sanskrit word as the title, if not wholly uncommercial. It was actually my wife Fionnuala Ni Chiosain who suggested the title The Night Alive which she saw in a lyric, I think, in a Leonard Cohen song. She had a book of his lyrics all printed out like poetry and she just showed it to me. And it seemed to fit it. A C : Is The Night Alive about grace? C M : It’s a very important feeling in the

play. I always regard grace as essentially

Features 21

A C : In experiencing The Night Alive

something happens to me I can’t quite articulate: emotion is just drawn out of me. It’s as if instead of focusing character motivation and choices, you’ve created this kind of shape that audience emotion can flow into. How does one direct for that? C M : A big influence on this play for me

had been doing an adaptation of a play by Strindberg, The Dance of Death— which Henry directed. Strindberg said that he didn’t believe there was any such thing as character. That the only way a character is interesting on stage is if whatever they’re doing, two pages later, they have to do be doing or saying the opposite of what they just did. That’s what I wanted to do with The Night Alive. Because the audience are not stupid. It’s actually very difficult to stay ahead of an audience because they are so smart. This was sort of my attempt to stay ahead of them as much as possible. The tone of the play would keep shifting. What was happening in the play would keep shifting. If we could do that then hopefully we’d all go on a ride together. How do you direct

that? I don’t know is the answer. You just do your best. A C : Is that your plan, Henry? Just do

your best?

HW : (laughs) Yeah. Things that were

useful about working with the cast of actors on Dance of Death I think will also be useful in working with the cast of actors on this show. I really feel like it’s their journey to plot. And that it’s really my intention to follow and to respond to them as they explore it. We’re so used to creating arcs. Creating gentle arcs through shows. And I think that this play wants to take those soft edges and make them much much sharper. As a director I can be encouraging the actors to just be bold and to play something right up against its opposite. A C : Conor, in other interviews you’ve

shared your feeling that we live in a giant mystery. Is that part of The Night Alive? Is living in mystery frightening, or can it be comforting? C M : There’s a feeling of compassion around the play, where we watch these people sort of wrestling their desires to the ground. In a way perhaps it’s like a little picture of the world. The darkness of the theater and the audience is sort of God really, looking on with a kind of benevolent love towards what’s happening and with forgiveness. The darkness is the unknown. And the unknown is God. It’s the all-powerful thing you can’t know. I find something very comforting in that. But I don’t think belief is ever really based on arguments or reasons. It almost can’t be articulated really: that’s why you have to do a play.

the unbidden gift of being without pain. You don’t realize how much you live with grace until something goes wrong in your life, and you’re living with pain. Either psychic pain or physical pain or spiritual pain or just grief or loss. And you think “Oh God, if only I could get back what I had when I took it all for granted.” When that feeling ever does descend again it’s such a relief that it seems to come from somewhere else. Only some other power could have possibly given this back.

The little red friend request notification blinked at me from my computer. Oh god. I don’t know if I can do this again. It’s not like a Facebook friend request is a marriage proposal. I barely even know some of the people who are my Facebook “friends”—it’s the absolute lowest level of commitment to human connection. But as I sat there staring at that little red circle, I actually started to panic. I could hear that red dot buzzing in my ears. I felt myself physically recoiling from the screen. This is just the beginning. Remember all the emotional investment? Where did that get either of you last time? Eventually, after avoiding Facebook altogether for days, I took a deep breath and clicked on “ignore friend request.” But for good measure, I also wrote a terse little note: Michael, I wish nothing but the best for you, but I think I should close the door on that part of my life. Hope you understand. Our entry into the world of The Night Alive is not the gesture of a door closing, but one of a door opening. When we first meet Tommy, he has come to the rescue of a battered and bloodied Aimee, whom he has just met. He is gentle and tender with her, and though she is a perfect stranger, he offers her his own bed. His small act of kindness is genuinely touching despite the evidence that he is in no position to offer her a legitimate lifeline.

Tommy’s own life is clearly in shambles. He lives in a filthy pigsty of a flat and is much too dependent on the generosity of his uncle for daily necessities like electricity and food; he barely ekes out a living with odd jobs and is estranged from his wife and daughter. The idea that he could possibly save Aimee is laughable. Maybe laughable is unfair. Let’s call it…optimistic. I’m inclined to be more generous in my judgment of Tommy considering that his desire to save Aimee is so familiar to me: it’s the same desire I felt when I met Michael—the sender of that anxiety-inducing Facebook message—back when I was seventeen. Michael was the first boy I had ever loved. We talked about our deepest fears, we pondered over the existence of a benevolent god, and we allowed ourselves to be vulnerable. It was the first time I felt Deeply Understood. But Michael was also a manic depressive who couldn’t get his shit together. I just didn’t recognize it at the beginning of our relationship. About a month before my high school graduation, I received an angry phone call from Michael’s stepfather, demanding I tell him everything I knew about what had happened the previous night. Presumably registering the confusion in my voice, he changed his tone and explained: Michael had been arrested and was being held in the county jail for

Features 25

armed robbery of a gas station. Our friendship fumbled along for ten years or so while Michael was in and out of prison. Michael would find himself in a huge mess of his own making, and then I would try to pull him back from the ledge. At his best, he was gentle, warm, and sincere; at his worst, he was cynical and manipulative. Though it had been years since we were romantically involved, when I told him I was engaged to my now-husband, he sent me an email that described in mind-numbing detail how he had let his car drift into oncoming traffic while he hoped someone would hit him. Our relationship was marked by moments of symbiotic thinking and penetrating insight, but those moments were equally matched by desperate letters, tearful visits, and an overwhelming feeling of powerlessness. It was utterly draining. And when that Facebook request popped up after a couple years of silence, I chose to walk away. Tommy chooses not to walk away. Part of me believes he consciously chooses generosity and compassion rather than retreat. But given the details of his history that we glean as the play goes on, I am suspicious that Tommy’s desire to save Aimee is a manifestation of some misguided deeper need to see himself as some sort of savior. Even as I make that judgment, I see it reflecting back to me. If I argue that Tommy’s ego is at the root of his efforts

to rescue Aimee from her troubles, does that imply that my decade-long campaign to save Michael could also be motivated by some selfish need to see myself as a pillar of strength? The story I tell myself about why I remained engaged in that relationship for so long is that I believed that my empathy could somehow make things better for Michael. But when I chose to extricate myself from our relationship, did I grieve because I believed things weren’t going to get better for him, or did I grieve because I realized that I was not the person who would activate that change? I’m ultimately not sure why I felt the need to save Michael. Perhaps I wanted to be a hero. Perhaps I just wanted to believe my empathy could have an impact in the world, that my compassion alone could be a force for good. By the end of my relationship with Michael, time, distance, and self-preservation outweighed both my altruistic impulse and my more selfish need to be a savior. As we watch Tommy begin his relationship with Aimee, I wonder which of his simultaneous motivations will ultimately define that relationship. Or perhaps, the notion of a single “true” motivation is a holdover from naïve seventeen-year-old thinking. Perhaps when it comes to reaching out, the most honest thing we can do is ask: is it possible to save people? What do we get in return? How dangerous does it have to get before we walk away?

T h e S t eppen w o l f E n s e m ble first began performing in the mid-1970s in the basement of a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 39 years and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 44 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf’s artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theater, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for groundbreaking, innovative work. That work is represented in production photos displayed throughout the theater.

“Whenever we attend Steppenwolf we know we will see top-tier acting and have a chance to see some of our favorite ensemble members. The unique nature of this theatre— focusing on this outstanding group of actors (and directors and playwrights)—is a stand out, even in Chicago, with its abundance of great art. We feel it is imperative to contribute to this great Chicago artistic endeavor.” – Ilene Patty and Thomas Terpstra, Steppenwolf supporters since 1998

Andrea Romain and Cleo V. Orthel Andrea Romain and her mother, Cleo V. Orthel, were passionate subscribers and supporters of Steppenwolf for 20 years. At times when they were unable to attend the theater they donated their tickets to provide an opportunity for young people to experience Steppenwolf. Andrea created a lasting legacy in honor of her mother by including Steppenwolf in her estate plan. Her gift will support an endowment for Steppenwolf for Young Adults, which has created world-class programming for teens from across the Chicago community since 1983. Steppenwolf for Young Adults uses the power of theater to encourage young people to a lifelong appreciation of the

arts. We create two full-scale professional productions each year performed during the week for students and opened up to the public during weekend matinees. In partnership with the Chicago Public Schools we build enrichment activities that deeply engage students through the lens of civic activism, giving youth a leading voice in conversations about important issues that affect the community and their visions for the future. The legacy gift from Andrea Romain and Cleo Orthel will make a difference to the next generation of Steppenwolf theater-goers for many years to come. As part of the in-school residency program, students from Multicultural Academy of Scholarship embody what an epic win looks like, during a workshop on Steppenwolf for Young Adults’ production of Leveling Up.

Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.

Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance, fill out the 60-Second Survey inserted in this program or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheater. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater ? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@steppenwolf.org. Need to contact a patron during a performance? If you need to contact a patron during a performance in our Downstairs or Upstairs Theaters, please call our Concierge Desk at 312-932-2476. Hours: one hour prior to curtain until 15 minutes after curtain call.
