THE Qualms w e lc o m e to
Welcome to The Qualms, the eighth play by Bruce Norris that Steppenwolf has produced. Bruce is the newest member of the Steppenwolf ensemble and we are proud and delighted to welcome this old friend to the ensemble. Bruce is the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for his play Clybourne Park and a host of awards for his plays in Chicago, New York, and London. The Qualms is set in a beachside apartment at the home of Gary and Teri on the evening of a gathering of friends who describe themselves in “the life,” meaning that that are members of a polyamorous community. Chris and his wife, Kristy, are initiates, having met Gary and Teri on vacation in Cabo, and they are meeting the group for the first time. As Bruce has said of the The Qualms: for a play centered around sex, virtually no sexual activity is depicted in the play. Instead, there is a great deal of talking and talking, pointedly, about status, power, politics, and gender. That a group of people gathered together to have sex would find themselves talking about power is perhaps not surprising (in a Bruce Norris play) because, as Regine says, “Chris, the most important political decision you make in 4 Welcome
your life is the decision who to sleep with.” A recurrent conversation in the play is the attempt by various characters to parse the difference between the mind and the body (also a central concern of much philosophical discourse). A central tenet of the group in “the life” is that living an honest life means acknowledging and acting on the body’s desire for sex. It’s a desire that exceeds the boundaries of the mind’s—or, as Deb insists, the heart’s—attachment to a partner. While the mind/heart may have fealty to a partner, the body knows no such allegiance. Parallels to the animal kingdom are drawn both to justify polyamorous desire and, by Chris, to defame the expression and practice of this desire. Bruce is honest to say that he was inspired to write the play by the discomfort he felt when watching a documentary about a polyamorous community. The documentary suggested that it was possible for some people not to feel sexual jealousy and Bruce recognized that he would be incapable of participating with any equanimity in partner-swapping. As he says, his mind might recognize that a non-possessive regard for a partner is an evolved stance, but his emotional, instinctive response would be jealousy. Out of this discomfort the play was born. And, Bruce acknowledged, his intention
was to produce a similar discomfort in the audience. I think this is what makes Bruce’s work so compelling: his plays evolve from what discomforts him and he creates a world that provokes the questions at the heart of that discomfort. In every case, Bruce is testing social norms, interrogating the conventional social narrative and problematizing it until we, as the audience, are forced to question our own, often unconscious, beliefs. Chris is our agent in the play: the one who enters an unfamiliar terrain and blurts out all the prejudices and fears that any of us might experience when confronted with a way of life not our own. I love that the play gets so quickly to the question of status and power because status and power are precisely what the dominant social narrative both wields and so successfully conceals. We accept fidelity in marriage or a committed partnership as “natural.” Our social order depends on believing so. But buried in fidelity is a sense of ownership: I have ownership (power) over your sexual life. As your partner, I will legislate your sexual behavior (and, I hope, your fantasies) and, by the way, this is “natural,” this is “mature” and “evolved.” But, Bruce asks, is it? If fidelity is “natural” why is so much energy devoted to corralling the desire of one’s partner?
I find the outcome of the play surprising because it opens onto questions larger than sexual desire or behavior. I think we get to the question of kindness and of what it means to share. Not just to share a partner but what it means to be responsible to a community. What are the real prohibitions in community, what are the rules? Maybe the real rules have to do with respecting the experience of every person in the room and issuing kindness rather than judgment. What if the test for dominance was not battle but kindness, the ability to tolerate difference? I love that Bruce allows all of the messy, inappropriate thoughts and behavior that stirred his discomfort to be expressed and then allows us to envision its aftermath—the moment when we just sit in our experience together. Maybe that is what “the life” really means: the polyamorous community is less about sex than about simple kindness, the ability to sit in our own brokenness and tolerate the same in others.

Ma r t h a L a v e y : Do you want to tell
our cues about what is natural from the animal kingdom?
B r u ce N o r r i s : I saw a documentary called The Lifestyle about a polyamorous community, and it was upsetting to me because I had a complicated response to it. I admired the people who were able to participate in that culture, but I realized that I had no ability to do it myself. I thought, if you could let go of your sense of possessiveness in a relationship and exist like an ape in the wild, you could make an evolutionary leap—either backwards or forwards—into something that was less complicated than the experience that most of us have. And then I started thinking about the relationship between sexual possessiveness and possessiveness overall.
B N : I think when we developed our pre-frontal cortex, which allowed us to have language, it also alienated us from ourselves in way that is distinct from other animals. We are not only our bodies, but we are also our concept about our bodies. Whereas animals might simply have sexual behavior, we also have thoughts about our sexual behavior, and those thoughts really complicate what is inherently an instinctive process. The elaborate social routine that we have to go through in order to do what is our natural and instinctive behavior is just so Byzantine.
us about the origin of The Qualms?
Sex , Status
&
Creating
Discomfort A conversation between playwright Bruce Norris and Artistic Director Martha Lavey
M L : We had a reading of the play for our staff, and someone commented in the discussion afterwards that for a play that is ostensibly about sex, there’s very little sex in the play. B N : Virtually none. I wanted to write a play that would make it just impossible to go home afterwards and have sex. I think the play is as much about status and competition as it is about sexuality— they’re all wedded together. We live in a culture that values status—what you own, the food you consume, how you dress, the movies you watch—as much as we value people’s character. M L : Some of the themes of The Qualms clearly are of presiding interest for you as a playwright because you keep exploring them. For instance, this question of how much should we as humans take
18 FEATURES
M L : It’s interesting, Bruce, that you talk about consciousness being a function of language. When you think about the evolution of language—reading produces a kind of interiority that wasn’t around before we sat around and read novels. With technology and the web, I wonder if that produces a different kind of consciousness. B N : Right. When we talk about the oral traditions of history and the accumulation of culture, I want to wipe the blackboard clean and ask, “What is the purpose of language?” Language exists as a tool for flirtation. We say, “What is your opinion of Moby Dick and blah blah blah,” but all we are doing in that conversation is positioning ourselves for status. It’s like the peacock’s tail or the toucan’s bill—it’s a sexual display. M L : Well, Bruce, let me ask you this: how would you describe this play?
Features 19
B N : Well, I guess I would say it’s funny and dirty? There’s a lot of filthy language in it, and it has adult themes that don’t get a lot of airplay onstage… It’s funny, in talking to someone who read the play, I thought it was odd that her response was, “It’s just so filthy!” I think it’s odd that in novels and T.V. and film, there’s a level of frankness that doesn’t find its way into the theater. I would love to have an experience in the theater with live people sitting in discomfort, having a frank conversation about sexuality. Not just philosophical ideas about it, but how it feels when one part of your body goes into that other part. M L : You generally like to produce discomfort, right? Clybourne Park did it big time with race, and in The Pain and the Itch, it was marriage and the sanctity of childhood. B N : Well, I don’t think I set out to find out what topic I can upset people about this time. I just think that what is dramatic is what is uncomfortable. M L : The ability to be unpossessive of
one’s beloved—do you think of that as a more evolved position? B N : In a sense, yes. We imagine ourselves to be citizens of a democracy, who are interested in human rights and the rights of individuals to be free from oppression. The more culturally evolved position would be to say “My partner is not my property. They are an autonomous individual separate from me. Their sexuality is something I cannot contain.” But that’s not who we are! We’re just a bunch of monkeys without any hair with this elaborate

routine of talking about sex and depicting it and looking at pornography. We spend half of our day fantasizing about it. That’s the enduring difficulty of monogamy. The frenzied coupling generally happens early on in the relationship, and then you have the rest of your life to ponder why you’re still in the same nest with that person. M L : I wonder if the fact that people live longer is making the value of that coupling more difficult to justify. I think there’s something that happens in midlife that makes it really obvious why you would want to have a partner. We think, “I need someone to help me in my decrepitude.” B N : Right. But now there’s a Grand Canyon between having your kids and death. It’s a great yawning chasm of time that is very difficult to fill. Especially if you’re like me and you’ve elected not to have kids and not to acquire property, then the project of living becomes very abstract. And the project of living together is like a Beckett landscape of, “What the hell are we doing together?”
You know, I knew a woman once who was really interested in getting married and having kids—though not to me—and when I questioned why it was important to her, she said, “It’s obvious—so I can have someone to watch me die!” That’s pretty grim. …Put that in the publicity materials. Ticket sales through the roof! M L : Yes, it’s what everybody loves to see: Sex and death—and hopefully in that order.

Are You Team Monogamy By Kathryn Zukaitis
I’m a junkie for intentional communities. Also chocolate and Dante and the German language, but mostly intentional communities. If a group’s tagline sounds both idealistic and inward-focused, sign me up STAT. (Bear with me here. I promise that I’ll start talking about sex… I mean, The Qualms, eventually.) Given my idealism, an extended flirtation with religion figured heavily into
my high school experience, and eventually led me to a divinity school degree. But religion isn’t the only system that offers companionship on the path to personal transformation. I chose a college with a comprehensive student-administered honor code, in which hundreds of students showed up to voluntary six-hour debates on the wording and structure of the Code. In grad school, I lived in
an intentional community house that made shared mealtime the basis of our relationships. And yes, it can get a little corny. But at the end of the day, I find incredible beauty and optimism in the idea that intentional structures, by forcing us to interrogate convention, allow our better selves to emerge. Which leads me to monogamy— or, rather, to people who challenge the conventions of monogamy and chose to deny the equation of love with possession. Because what is more emblematic of our better selves than the ability to love without possessiveness? In The Qualms, Bruce Norris imagines a group of people who raise questions about our sex-partnerchoosing behaviors and whether we are as enlightened as we imagine ourselves to be. The people in my life who have challenged themselves to find a relationship structure that resists jealousy and possessiveness gravitate towards polyamory. Though The Qualms doesn’t investigate the distinction between specific categories of non-monogamous relationships, many of the issues confronting these characters resonate with my friends in polyamorous relationships. Polyamory, as my friends describe it, can involve sex, but tends to put the emphasis on the emotional connections formed in multiple romantic relationships conducted with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved. One of the mixed blessings of polyamory—both a problem and an opportunity—is the lack of readily available cultural models for the relationship. My friends Thomas and Kit, who announced their engagement
last weekend, have spent the last two and one-half years negotiating and then refining the rules of their relationship. “There’s a traditional cultural script for monogamous relationships,” says Thomas. “1, 2, 3, 4, bam—and it’s pretty easy to follow without that much communication.” For many couples in poly relationships, constant, intense communication isn’t a choice—it’s an absolute necessity. “We’ve workshopped our relationship over and over,” says Kit, “and we have continual checkins that you wouldn’t think to have in monogamous relationships.” The question of labels or identification is also complicated. When they started dating, one of Thomas’ first questions to Kit was, “Are you team monogamy or team non-monogamy?” Kit wasn’t sure. She tried identifying as poly for a while, but found that it didn’t quite fit. She now describes herself as monogamish, a term coined by sex columnist Dan Savage in 2011. “When I was in college,” Kit says, “I had a very romanticized idea of monogamy, but I had no idea what I actually wanted out of a relationship. Now I have a much more significant sense of self, of what I’m able to give, and what I’m not able to give.” With the benefits of polyamory come a number of very real challenges. One, of course, is the general public resistance to the idea. All of the names in this article are aliases, since the friends I interviewed have not shared the details of their relationships with some family members and colleagues. The biggest obstacle to functional polyamory, though, might be something we all share: jealousy. In a 2009 Newsweek article on
Features 23
polyamory, biological anthropologist Helen Fisher stated that poly couples are “fighting Mother Nature” when they try to overcome the hard-wired human instinct of jealousy. But my poly friends are less concerned with eradicating (or ignoring) jealousy than they are with finding ways to channel it. My friends Sabina and Ned, who gradually transitioned into a poly relationship after getting married two years ago, have a unique take on jealousy. “Jealousy is what happens when I wish I was there with Ned,” says Sabina. “But to me, possessiveness is where it crosses the line into something unhealthy, the idea that that is MY person and that something is happening without MY permission. And that’s where it gets a little gross to me.” Each couple has found their own ways to combat—or redirect— jealousy. For example, Kit is fine with Thomas dating in theory, but there’s only so much that she’s willing to talk about it. Thomas never hides the fact that he goes on dates—everything, and I mean everything, goes on his calendar—but he lets Kit bring up the topic if and when she wants to. At first Ned and Sabina had a similar approach. “Ned thought he would save my feelings by not telling me enough about why he liked one of the people he was seeing,” says Sabina. “It felt really terrible. I wondered whether he was just trying to take advantage of the structure of the relationship.” After much discussion, Sabina found that if she has a clearer picture of why Ned’s excited about someone, she’s able to find joy in his joy, whatever the source. “Now it’s like: Are you going on a date?!?!” I love that sentiment—the idea that
it’s possible to take the raw material of human nature and find ways to bring out joy rather than jealousy. At my most optimistic, I imagine polyamory to be a pathway to the kind of relationship exhorted by 1 Corinthians 13, that seemingly ubiquitous staple of Christian wedding liturgies: “Love is patient, love is kind... love is not jealous.” But if I’m being honest, I’m also skeptical about the possibility of significantly changing one’s nature, rather than just one’s habits. I worry that relationships or communities that ask you to become a certain kind of person don’t actually offer transformation, only censorship, and that we bury rather than transmute our less desirable instincts when we try to change. In The Qualms, the immutability of human instinct comes under interrogation when newcomers question the claim that their hosts are leading a more enlightened life. Are these newcomers a disruptive presence because they’re not following the rules that allow for a more evolved approach to human relationships? Or does their arrival merely reveal the tensions already hidden behind elevated rhetoric and wishful thinking? I’m not sure—and I’m even less sure whether I would be willing put the question to the test myself. Part of me is curious; and part of me is scared that all the intentionality and self-interrogation in the world couldn’t uproot my feelings of possessiveness. Despite my appetite for aspirational rhetoric, shared meals and endless debates, I must admit that there are some conventions that I will likely remain cocooned in. Unless, of course, the right tagline catches my eye.

T h e S t eppe n w o l f E n s e m ble first began performing in the mid-1970s in the basement of a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 36 years and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 44 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf’s artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theater, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for groundbreaking, innovative work. That work is represented in production photos displayed throughout the theater.

Airline Highway By Lisa D’amou r Directed by Joe Mantello
February 5 – May 10, 2015 In David Adjmi’s contemporary take on the young queen of France, Marie is a confection created by a society that values extravagance and artifice. But France’s love affair with the royals sours as revolution brews, and for Marie, the political suddenly becomes very personal. From the light and breezy banter at the palace to the surging chants of “Liberte! Egalite! Fraternite!” in the streets, Marie Antoinette holds a mirror up to our contemporary society that might just be entertaining itself to death.

April 2 – June 7, 2015 It’s Andy’s 21st birthday and preparations for the party are under way. But Andy and his caregiver are running late. As his family gathers, two unexpected guests appear, straining the delicate family dynamic. With a deft comic touch, The Herd introduces us to a suburban English family who have had to re-organize themselves around the extraordinary needs of one of their own, bringing to light the challenges of reconciliation, the power of shared memories and the irresistible pull of family.

Tommy is getting by—kind of: he is crashing in his uncle’s ramshackle house in Dublin, dodging his estranged family, and plotting a parade of get-richquick schemes with his buddy Doc. Then one day he defends a destitute woman against a violent attack, and a fragile glimmer of hope appears as Tommy tends to her in his run-down room. From the author of The Weir, Shining City and The Seafarer comes this compelling new drama—by turns funny and frightening, but always deeply human.
In the parking lot of The Hummingbird, a onceglamorous motel on New Orlean’s infamous Airline Highway, a group of friends gather. A rag-tag collection of strippers, hustlers and philosophers have come together to celebrate the life of Miss Ruby, an iconic burlesque performer who has requested a funeral before she dies. The party rages through the night as old friends resurface to pay their respects. A world premiere from the author of Detroit, Airline Highway is a boisterous and moving ode to the outcasts that make life a little more interesting.
Having dedicated her life to religious service, Shelley runs a Bronx soup kitchen with unsentimental efficiency. Her brisk nature masks an unsettling fear that her efforts are meaningless. When Emma—a rainbow-haired college dropout—arrives to volunteer, her volatile mix of generosity and self-involvement pushes Shelley over the edge. With both humor and heart, Grand Concourse asks big questions about the value of compassion and the limits of forgiveness.

The Shubert Foundation
Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s 2013/14 season is generously sponsored by: Grand Benefactors
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
Benefactors
Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust
The Shubert Foundation is a leading advocate for American theater and dance organizations nationwide. For nearly 30 years, the Foundation has partnered with Steppenwolf giving unrestricted operating support that is vital to our educational and artistic work. With the Shubert Foundation’s commitment, we are able to introduce major new plays by award-winning playwrights like Bruce Norris’ The Qualms to Chicago audiences.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is a national benefactor to leading arts organizations including Steppenwolf. The Mellon Foundation’s generosity has been instrumental in our efforts to build one of the most effective commissioning and new play development programs in the country. With their support, we nurture vital relationships between promising playwrights and our ensemble that generate exciting new work and promote new voices for the American theater. Steppenwolf is honored by The Mellon Foundation’s investment in our theater and ensemble.
Steppenwolf is grateful for its longstanding partnership with the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust. The Steinberg’s leading investment over the years has allowed us to forge repeatable creative relationships with artists such as Steinberg Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Bruce Norris. This season we are again honored to recognize the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust as the foundation sponsor of the pioneering First Look Repertory of New Work, advancing some of the most compelling new voices in the American theater today.
Firmly committed to arts vitality in the State of Illinois, The Illinois Arts Council continues to contribute to Steppenwolf and enhance the diverse culture of Chicago. The Council’s annual grant of unrestricted operating support is essential to fulfilling Steppenwolf’s mission to bring new exciting works like The Qualms to audiences in Chicago and to the forefront of American theater.
An exceptional curator of traditional Italian cuisine in a warm, rustic interior, Vinci is a perfect fit for Steppenwolf guests to enjoy before or after a performance. The inviting sense of family that permeates the walls of Vinci is in keeping with the ensemble driven nature of the work at Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Steppenwolf is honored to continue to partner with our neighbors at Vinci. For more information on how you can support Steppenwolf’s artistic intiatives as a sponsor or corporate partner, please contact Megan A. Smith at 312-654-5697 or msmith@steppenwolf.org. 38 The Qualms

Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.
Lost or Found? On-site? Please check in with a member of the house staff. Already left? Call the Front of House office at 312-932-2445. Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance, fill out the 60-Second Survey inserted in this program or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheater. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater ? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@steppenwolf.org. Need to contact a patron during a performance? If you need to contact a patron during a performance in our Downstairs or Upstairs Theaters, please call our Concierge Desk at 312-932-2476. Hours: one hour prior to curtain until 15 minutes after curtain call.
Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. The theater reserves the right to limit admission of children younger than the age of six. The taking of photographs and the use of any type of recording device is not allowed in the theater during performances and is a violation of state and federal copyright laws. Digital media will be deleted, and tape or film will be confiscated. Photo/Video Disclaimer: During your visit, you or members of your family may be filmed, videotaped, and/ or photographed by a Steppenwolf employee, contract photographer or the media.
