When I was much younger, growing up in Evanston, I remember thinking there was absolutely no way I would ever live in such a place once my life was my own. It wasn’t that I was unhappy, because I wasn’t, or that Evanston is even remotely horrible, because it’s not. My wanderlust, and the engine of its conviction, was fueled solely and deeply by my youth and the fearlessness that knows nothing of time and its powerful toll. It took me far longer to leave than I imagined and ironically, almost no time to return as I am now raising the family I never knew I’d have in the house I never knew I wanted a mere five blocks from the house in which I grew up. I left believing what I sought was independence, but the comfort of connection drew me back home. If what they say is true, and nostalgia is simply a longing for a past we know we can survive, Annie Baker’s beautiful, hysterical and impossibly touching play, The Flick, puts perfectly and permanently to bed the belief that true longing is reserved only for the old. In a run-down movie theater in Massachusetts, three young people struggle to find meaning and friendship in a world moving too fast for even them, lamenting the so-called progress that understands nothing of their stories nor the way they want them to be told. Over the tedium of their mindless and eternal clean-up shifts, Rose, Sam and Avery forge a tentative and improbable connection. With a shared affection for old movies and being misunderstood, they create a world of belonging and gentleness, honor and honesty and, for a moment, together, stop the merciless march of time. The Flick is a play of great structural skill and verbal acuity, certainly: Ms. Baker is a master of character and tone whose understanding of rate and rhythm is unrivaled, but it is also a play of astonishing humanity and compassion. The simple story my generation tells about contemporary American life is that it is the young that push us forward (and essentially drive us down) with their technology and their devices and their endless search for the new; that it is they that are careless, unaware that the march they are on may lead them nowhere, or more to the point, back to where they started and why won’t they just slow down and listen to, well, us? The Flick, with all its considerable humor and pathos, wonders aloud if maybe the grown-ups aren’t really listening and that maybe, just maybe, all that running is not about wanting to leave, but about the fear of being left behind. 5 Things You Need to Know About Film

American cinema 200 to 300 prints of a film would be created and distributed to movie houses, mainly in urban areas, and there were many small production facilities working all across the country. According to Antos, the late 1970’s marked a major turning point. The film industry boomed and Kodak became the primary film manufacturer, cranking out tons of film each day and destroying smaller production facilities in the process. This made it increasingly difficult to create small batches of film, and initiated the widening gulf between mainstream and what we’d now call “independent” film. It also showed the strong effect economic interests can have on the film industry, arguably foreshadowing the shift from film to digital.

3. In 2016, digital rules.

Written by Greta Honold Photography by Joel Moorman

Daniel Knox, Julian Antos and Rebecca Lyons

During the much publicized run of Quentin Tarantino’s new 70mm film The Hateful Eight, Steppenwolf staff members Greta Honold and Joel Moorman popped into The Music Box’s projection booth to chat with three of their projectionists, Julian Antos, Daniel Knox and Rebecca Lyon, about the mechanics, history and beauty of film, and the contentious transition to digital. Here are the 5 things you need to know about film:

1. 35mm (was) the standard.

For most of the 20th century, 35mm, the kind of film shown at the movie theater featured in The Flick, was the most common film size for projection in movie houses because it offered the best quality in the most economical fashion. Film is developed through a photochemical process, a series of still images printed onto film stock that then moves through a 16 Features

Over the last decade the film industry has seen a sudden and sweeping transition from film to digital projection, largely driven

by economics. With digital projection, everything is operated by computers, not people. And there’s no need to maintain and staff facilities that create the physical film. The way the transition occurred was, in Lyon’s words, “a bit sinister.” The transition was prompted and largely dictated by the studios, and supported by the major exhibitors and digital projector manufacturers, all of whom benefited economically from the switch. No filmmakers were consulted. An argument can be made that the quality of film is better than digital in terms of resolution. According to Knox, you can see the difference clearly in dissolves, and when the camera moves quickly. Yet Antos, Knox and Lyon don’t see digital projection itself as the problem. The quality is still, overall, high. The problem is that we have all been forced to choose between digital and film. Lyon asks, “Can’t we have both?”

projector. Most theaters now screen what is called a DCP or “digital cinema package,” which is basically just a container for a series of files, delivered on a small hard drive, downloaded onto a server, and then projected.

2. Film is over 100 years old.

The film industry was born at the end of the 19th century. In the early decades of

4. Film is beautiful.

When asked why we should care about preserving film, Antos, Knox and Lyon acknowledged that it’s a qualitative argument. “It’s just beautiful,” says Antos. Its physical object is beautiful, the very human skill of projecting film is beautiful, and the experience of watching film is, to them, an irreplaceable experience. Lyon says, “There are contrast differences and color differences. You can define these things numerically… but I know that I am happy when I am sitting in a theater watching a beautiful 35mm film being projected.”

5. And many people agree.

Antos, Knox and Lyon are not alone in their love for film and sadness about its inevitable demise. And it does feel inevitable. “We are losing,” says Lyon. But from their perch at The Music Box they see a lot of young people in particular seeking out the film experience. And as The Hateful Eight flickered and rolled in the background of our conversation, they spoke excitedly about the efforts being made by highprofile filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino,

18 Features

Paul Thomas Anderson, and particularly Christopher Nolan, to push back on the studios to keep film alive. There seems to be general agreement that at this point the shift to digital can never be reversed. And no one here was arguing for that. But these projectionists, and audience members and filmmakers across the country, seem to feel that this alternative movie watching experience which has defined much of film’s history, needs to be kept alive. Leading up to The Flick rehearsals, we asked playwright Annie Baker and director Dexter Bullard to interview each other about… whatever they wanted. The result? A conversation about childhood secrets, day jobs and of course, their love of film.

Dexter Bullard: Annie, was there an image, an aha, a long unanswered question that inspired your writing The Flick?

this way to me, were trying to imitate movies either in their pace or stylistic flourishes or plot.

Annie Baker: I think The Flick came from

DB: Which came first: the setting, the

20 Features

characters, the story or the themes? What arose in the creation that surprised you?

AB: The setting came to me first. That

stand-off between a fictional film-going audience and the real theater audience, with the movie screen as the fourth wall. Also the idea of the entire theater audience gazing right into the all-seeing eye of the projector, and what film, I mean 35-millimeter film, looks like from that vantage point.

DB: You often write in solitude or on retreat.

What does that time “away” give you and your process? Where was The Flick written and about how long did it take to realize?

AB: You know, I do love being alone and

going on writing retreats, but that’s not always where I get the actual writing done. Before I write a play, though, I do around two years of research, and often a lot of that reading and thinking takes place when I’m lonely and by myself out in the middle of nowhere and I can see a lot of stars.

AB: When and how did you first fall in love

AB: Hmm. Well as a kid, I was home alone

DB: Playing the child in Brecht’s Caucasian

a lot. And the video store, the wonderful but now-closed Video To Go in Amherst, Massachusetts, was halfway between my school and my house. So as a middleschooler I would rent two movies on my walk home after school, secretly watch them before my mother got home from work, and then return them on my way to school the next day. Also there wasn’t a lot of great live theater in Amherst, so movies and novels were my access to fictional narratives. And even though I kind of fell out of love with movies in my 20s, I’m kind of back in love with them in my 30s. I think The Flick helped with that.

Chalk Circle in a college production when I was 10 years old. I didn’t think much about theater or acting any more than I did about drawing or music. But the first performance before an audience something happened. I was sitting, as I was blocked to do, on the floor waiting for my “mother” Grusha and snow began to fall. The snow was tiny balls of Styrofoam pouring from a can in the grid above, that I had seen the designer shave off a board earlier. And I was transfixed. The tiny “flakes” eddying down around me felt more snow-like than snow. And an hour or so later, as my birth mother and the mother who had rescued me pulled me from two sides, it was impossible for tears to not stream down my face.

Annie Baker: Dexter, what is your favorite

movie? Why?

a lot of questions I was grappling with about both theater and movie-going. I was a real movie buff as a kid and then in my 20s movies became less interesting to me. This was also around the time when theaters were transitioning from film to digital projection and not being able to see movies on 35-mill anymore was also a huge loss. So I would go to movies and then sit through the end of the credits feeling numb and then watch the lights go on and the two ushers come in with their brooms and shit-talk each other while they did their cleaning dance. And it felt like a little piece of live theater following the movie; the performed past dissolving into the performed present. I was also just starting out as a playwright when I first conceived of The Flick, and I was interested in how threatened theater people were by movies and how theater non-profits constantly were defending theater’s right to exist and its cultural importance, while at the same time so many plays, or at least it seemed

working in movies. The glamour! The paycheck! The power! But I really have only brushed against opportunities. In reality, I am so busy and happy making art in theater, solving the problems, and I am just getting good at it. Why add something else? But, I’m open.

was your best day job?

DB: Worst was stamping the words “red

The Steppenwolf Ensemble first began performing in the mid-1970s in the basement of

a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 40 years and Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 44 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf’s artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theater, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for groundbreaking, innovative work. That work is represented in production photos displayed throughout the theater.

Mary Page Marlowe

By ensemble member Tracy Letts Directed by ensemble member Anna D. Shapiro

March 31 – May 29, 2016

Mary Page Marlowe is an accountant from Ohio. She’s led an ordinary life, making the difficult decisions we all face as we try to figure out who we really are and what we really want. As Tracy Letts brings us moments—both pivotal and mundane—from Mary’s life, a portrait of a surprisingly complicated woman emerges. Intimate and moving, Mary Page Marlowe shows us how circumstance, impulse and time can combine to make us mysteries… even to ourselves.

Get up close: see the actors and experience the drama in the most intimate way possible. Our newly added Pit Seats will bring you as close as you can get to the stage—at only $30 a seat! The winner of the 2015 Pulitzer is a rowdy, unpredictable and entertaining black comedy

Between Riverside and Crazy

By Stephen Adly Guirgis Directed by ensemble member Yasen Peyankov

June 23 – August 21, 2016

Ex-cop “Pops” Washington and his ex-con son Junior are barely holding on to one of the last great rent stabilized apartments in Manhattan. Pops has his hands (not to mention his apartment) full as he navigates a steady stream of sketchy houseguests and sweats out the impending verdict on his law suit against the police department. A celebration of the glorious contradictions that make up human nature, this rowdy dark comedy looks at the slippery nature of justice, and the grit it takes to finally move on.41 steppenwolf
