BY ELLEN FAIREY DIRECTED BY KIMBERLY SENIOR JUNE 23 – JULY 29, 2018
WELCOME TO THE MINUTES I first read Tracy’s new play, The Minutes, late one night in early December of last year, at a moment when I would have had difficulty remembering the last time I had smiled, let alone laughed. And like a great play can do, it found me not just in a time of need, but made its way to the center of my heart, where the pain resided. It was such a glorious relief. Because the play is political in nature and provocative by choice, I am hesitant to say much more. In our current landscape, even the most historically civil conversations about what’s best for our world have deteriorated into shouting matches over what’s actually real. There are times when I find myself using all of my energy and focus to simply try to understand the motives of people whose words and actions seem so obviously cruel, so mystifyingly short sighted, that I

wonder if I may actually be dreaming. What am I missing, I ask myself. This divide, this wrenching breach, can’t be the whole story. And of course, as Tracy’s play takes on, it’s not. We wake up every day with ideas and beliefs that we assume exist separately from the house in which we reside. We believe ourselves to be independent thinkers who process information free and clear from that information’s actual origin and we are baffled by one another still, over and over again. And that’s because the story—the real one—is bigger than each of us and bigger than all of us. And it always has been. Maybe the answers lie not in each other’s eyes but in the shared ground on which we all stand. And maybe our challenge is not in the structure of our world but in its foundation. Or maybe there is actually nothing wrong and we’re just living in the inevitable world our true story has made. Maybe the joke is on us. And maybe that’s why, reading The Minutes, I laughed until I cried. Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director

A SCENIC DESIGNER’S NOTEBOOK: Tony Award-winning designer David Zinn shares some insight into the development of the scenic design for The Minutes and walks through several versions of scenic models.
grapple with questions of where and how people sit in the space—Formal desks? Informal tables with a permanent Mayor’s desk? All informal seating? What are the other rooms? How do you get to the bathroom? How do
you get into the room from outside? And since there is a transformation of a kind in this play—how do you hide the things you need for the transformation in a room that should look utterly un-transformable?
Edited by Audience Engagement Coordinator Patrick Zakem Since The Minutes calls for—and I think is best supported by—a “realistic” environment onstage, most of my research and early conversations with director Anna D. Shapiro were about very practical questions: What kind of room is this; what’s the scale? What’s the size of the city of Big Cherry? Is it a modern room? Not modern? Repurposed from some other space not intended for meetings? Formal? Not Formal? What does this “public” room look like when the public isn’t there? So, we started by looking at a bunch of City Council meetings of various scales. I knew this wonderful book Meetings by Paul Shambroom, which is a richly detailed collection of photos of City and Town Council meetings and the minutes of those meetings which I sent to Anna as a starting point. I started this process imagining that the space would be kind of small and banal, but in looking at all this research together that world started to feel a little… not right, I guess, for the material. There’s lots of great City Council meeting research on the internet (in fact, most of those meetings are filmed and put on YouTube) so I started Googling cities that were roughly the population we thought Big Cherry was, and started sampling what their city

council meetings were like and where they took place. I tried to find as many places from around the country as I could, to try and get as broad a sense as possible of these rooms. And while we didn’t end up drawing from a lot of these rooms literally, we learned a lot from the “dressing” of them. At some point, author Tracy Letts suggested Peoria as a city that was perhaps a similar size as Big Cherry, so I took a look at their City Council meetings which are held in their beautiful historic City Hall, which has a very different flavor than most of our other research. It’s an early 20th century building that has a Neo-Classical vibe inside—a big arched coffered ceiling, a mural at the back. There’s also a wonderful city hall in Massachusetts I found that had a similar vibe.
Below are four iterations of the scenic model for The Minutes, exploring the questions of where and how characters sit in the space.
The basic model. Note the windows that are shuttered closed with open curtains, as well as the fluorescent lights that hang below the lights ensconced in the ceiling.
This version includes a “built in” array of seating for the Mayor and the City Council. The Mayor’s desk is a bit larger than the others. The question came up: would Carp’s desk still be there? His name tag? Or have they been removed?
In this version, the mayor’s desk is the only “built in” unit. The City Council’s seating would be more flexible, which allowed us to dodge the question of whether or not Carp is ever coming back.
This is the final version, with completely flexible seating highlighting the contrast between the temporary modern furniture and the permanent, formal architecture.
The formality of those spaces—the idealism of it, the suggestion of history, and the potential for the wonderful collision of a “period” room with contemporary furniture: it all felt like the kind of world in which we wanted this play to be set. Once we agreed on that, I made a series of models (see next page) that show how we could fit the scale of the city council room into Steppenwolf’s Downstairs Theatre. We also started to

THE STEPPENWOLF ENSEMBLE Steppenwolf Theatre Company is the nation’s premier ensemble theater. Formed by a collective of actors in 1976, the ensemble of 49 members represent a remarkable crosssection of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling and powerful productions from Balm in Gilead to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf produces hundreds of performances and events annually in its three spaces: the 515-seat Downstairs Theatre, the 299-seat Upstairs Theatre and the 80-seat 1700 Theatre. Artistic programing includes a seven-play season; a twoplay Steppenwolf for Young Adults season; Visiting Company engagements; and LookOut, a multi-genre performances series. Education initiatives include the nationally recognized work of Steppenwolf for Young Adults, which engages 15,000 participants annually from Chicago’s diverse communities; the esteemed School at Steppenwolf; and Professional Leadership Programs for arts administration training. While firmly grounded in the Chicago community, nearly 40 original Steppenwolf productions have enjoyed success both nationally and internationally, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, London, Sydney, Galway and Dublin.

Committed to providing services and programming that enhance the experience of guests with disabilities, Steppenwolf is proud to feature: • Assistive listening devices in our Downstairs, Upstairs and 1700 theaters. • Audio-described performances, artistic conversations and touch tours of the stage for patrons who are blind or have low vision. • Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre
If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Audience Services 312-335-1650 | TTY 312-335-3830 | E-mail access@steppenwolf.org
Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby.
