WELCOME TO THE ROOMMATE A deeply unfortunate truth in our society is that there is literally a syndrome to describe the moment when women arrive at a “certain age” and begin to disappear from society’s view. “Invisible Women Syndrome” describes the phenomena of women between the ages of 45 and 60 disappearing, not just from TV and film and, yes, the theater, but also from our everyday cognition. With children grown, and having been pushed out of their chosen fields, and not yet willing to quietly retire to the accepted role of grandmother, society is unable to easily classify these women and so chooses, instead, to look past, or worse, through them. Women speak of being, not just left by husbands, but also ignored in stores, at restaurants, getting a drink at the bar, crossing the street—almost as though we have ceased to exist. It can be lonely and terrifying and enraging when we have so much vitality and life still to offer, but fewer and fewer places where it’s welcomed or sought out. What a joyful relief for me, then, to come across Jen Silverman’s slyly subversive comedy that puts, at its center two women “of a certain age,” where the women, and their subsequent, delicately found friendship has nothing to do with their expected societal roles or how they interact within the family structure. Sharon, an Iowan, housewife who has been left by her husband and struggles to communicate with her son, puts an ad in the paper looking for someone to share the space and help pay the bills. Robyn, who has lived a life outside of traditional expectations and broken a lot of rules, arrives in Iowa for a fresh start. They meet from these freshly undefined perspectives and get to start again, building a relationship that is hilarious, touching and wholly original. Silverman’s great gift is to dignify these two women, so frequently overlooked or cast aside, as individuals whose desires and struggles are important and necessary and uniquely their own.

I couldn’t believe my good fortune, then, to have both Ora and Sandra, two of my peers, whose talent and humor are only matched by their sheer, inarguable vitality both onstage and off, available to take on these magnificent roles. It feels almost criminal, the number of times I have seen both uphold a play or a scene in a supporting role, making the heavy lifting look effortless and being gracious in their sharing of spotlight. They are now, right where they should be, centered in the lens of attention in roles that make full use of their vast array of exceptional talents. To have them guided in their work by the incomparable Phylicia Rashad, an artist of such extraordinary talent and grace, whose work I have respected and who I feel remarkably lucky to have in the Steppenwolf orbit—well, I frankly can’t imagine anything better than that. These are three women, three artists, who know something about staying visible—even when they have to insist on it. And I, for one, am glad that they do. Sometimes the greatest kindness we can afford is the full weight of our gaze. For in the act of really truly seeing that other person across from us, we may just reveal a truth about ourselves as well.

SM: And we didn’t really work… OJ: Together. SM: We were in the same play but... we did share a dressing room. OJ: Just like now, on The Doppelgänger. GH: So you’re roommates! SM: We are actual roommates. OJ: Having Sandra attached to the play was a thing because I had been away from Chicago for a while, was going to continue to be away for a while, and I was interested in knowing who I was going to take this journey with. And having someone like Sandra was really inspirational. I have been an ensemble member for a little over ten years and Sandra is relatively new— SM: Two years—

ENSEMBLE MEMBERS ORA JONES AND SANDRA MARQUEZ ON THE ROOMMATE Edited by Greta Honold In the lead up to rehearsals for The Roommate, cast members and Steppenwolf ensemble members Ora Jones and Sandra Marquez sat down with Audience Engagement Coordinator Greta Honold to talk about their interest in the play, their shared history, and more. Greta Honold: Do you remember the first time you read the play and how you responded? What drew you to this story?

the biggest reason for me wanting to do it. Sandra and I had worked together before...

Ora Jones: I’m pretty sure when I first read the play I knew that Sandra was going to do it. That was probably

Sandra Marquez: Decades ago.

12 Features

OJ: Literal decades.

I liked the play very much but the ability to read the play with your voice in it, I could hear that. And I think that probably... any other place at any other time, any other theater, I would have been cast in the other role, and so it’s fun to be cast this way. GH: Yeah I wanted to ask about that. I could see either of you playing either of the roles. OJ: Well one of the things that I first remember was reading was the Playwright’s Note at the beginning of the script, where she asks that theaters avoid having a Black actor play Robyn and a white actor play Sharon. That indicated to me that the playwright wanted to be responsible and make sure the conversation was not about culture or race; it is more about these two women’s particular experiences and what they had to learn from each other. If my partner had not been a woman of color like Sandra, our characters’ relationship could very well be misconstrued in a way that would distract from the play.

IN THE PAST COUPLE YEARS I HAVE REALLY COME TO APPRECIATE THAT YOUR VOICE— NO MATTER WHAT THAT VOICE IS— IS LEGITIMATE

OJ: So the opportunity to develop communication with each other in that manner, as colleagues who for years have respected and admired each other’s work—I’m speaking for you now... (Laughter) SM: No it’s true. OJ: That was appealing.

SM: Similarly, Steppenwolf’s Literary Manager Polly Hubbard sent me the script and said, “what do you think of this play and what do you think if we could talk Ora into doing it?” and I said immediately, “Okay let me read it!” And

SM: Right. Because from my perspective when there is limited representation, and historically there has been very limited representation of people who look like me on this stage, I want to make sure there are a variety of stories told, not just the one little narrow section that audiences may be used to seeing.

Features 13

That’s really important to me. And then when you’re working with someone like Ora, I know she’s not going to lean into a stereotype of some kind. OJ: That is the thing about acting in general that in the past couple years I have really come to appreciate, which is that your voice—no matter what that voice is—is legitimate. SM: Yes. OJ: Half my family is from Texas, the other half is from Massachusetts; half is Baptist, the other half is Catholic; I had great grandmothers who were Mexican, and we think British. And then on my mother’s side were the Cape Verde islands, they came from there. And all of this goes into making me. And all of that is as legitimate as the next person’s story. So in trying to address this particular tale, how I am is fine. I think it’s about how these two women experience each other; I don’t think there’s a need to be anything other than who or what you are. You can be yourself, and let that be the way in, and then find the things that help develop the character.

OJ: That is absolutely true. SM: What’s so lovely about this play and really sweet is that this woman finds herself alone when she never expected to be, right? Life sort of blew up and her insistence that she’s old, that it’s over, that she’s done. I can relate to that. I can identify with that. There are so many times in my life when I hear myself saying, “well that ship has sailed, don’t even think about that anymore.” And then I’m like, “Wow—I’m not even that old!” But I think it’s so steeped in the culture that you sort of become invisible past a certain age. That even if nobody’s consciously telling you that, it’s there. OJ: One of the reasons I want to do this show is I’ve not seen a play like this before. And I had actually written a note to myself... I write these little notes to myself... (pulls out phone) here it is. “Just because you’ve never met anyone like me before, doesn’t mean that I don’t exist. It doesn’t mean I’m not real.” That’s what it is. And that’s how I feel about actors like me and Sandra taking on roles like these...

SM: There’s such a wide variety of human experience regardless of the color of your skin and yet so often the stories that get told are narrowed down to just a few.

GH: What is it like doing a two person show?

GH: In terms of age as well, right? We had a conversation recently with the staff about the play, and a lot of people found it unique and refreshing that this is a play about women of a certain age. We don’t hear those stories. Women in their 50’s seem to be a group of people who, perhaps society just doesn’t think about, and whose complexities don’t get acknowledged.

OJ: You really can’t be messing around.

share from your multiple experiences sharing dressing rooms? OJ: We were roommates in A Christmas Carol at The Goodman and there was a decorating contest— SM: An annual thing— OJ: And we went for it— SM: We had the best room— OJ: We did! SM: We had the best room. We called it “A Santeria Christmas.” And we decorated like crazy, and I put up loteria cards but people thought they were voodoo cards because they’d never seen them before—people were freaked out—Ora had a twig and when people came in she would like wave it around. And there was a booth where we would do readings OJ: We were so proud. GH: And you didn’t win?

SM: We didn’t win. OJ: We came in third. We got like a candy cane with m&m’s. We were mad. We were so angry. SM: Fast-forward twenty years later, we haven’t worked together since. Of course, we’ve seen each other now and then over the years, and we’re sitting in our dressing room for The Doppelgänger, and without missing a beat, Ora says, “do you remember…” I thought I was going to have to remind her! OJ: I’m still mad about it. GH: Who won? OJ: I don’t remember…they put up like some tape and some tinsel. SM: I think it was a Y2K Christmas theme. It was 1999. It was clever… GH: Who were the judges? SM: Losers. (Laughter) OJ: We were robbed. Still mad about it!

SM: Man, your scene partner is right there with you. SM: It can be a disaster if it’s not an actor you trust. You have to know that your scene partner is there for you. OJ: Seriously. We are going to run our lines a lot, take each other out for dinner (laughter). It’s true. Trust is extremely important. GH: Any funny roommate stories to

Accessibility at Steppenwolf

• Sign language-interpreted and open-captioned performances for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Induction hearing loops in the 1700 and Downstairs Theatre

If you use a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a T-Coil, feel free to turn it on for the performance! The 1700 Theatre and both levels of the Downstairs Theatre are equipped with induction loops. Individual portable neck loops are available in our Upstairs Theatre—just ask any member of the house staff if you’d like to use one. Steppenwolf’s induction loop was made possible in part by a generous gift from John Hart and Carol Prins. Would you like to utilize or learn more about these services? Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby.

hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help. Lost or Found? On-site? Please check in with a member of the house staff. Already left? Call the Front of House office at 312-932-2445. Want to provide feedback? Your input is always valuable to us. Have an opinion about the play or artistic content? Stick around for the post-show discussion featured after every performance or join the conversation at facebook.com/steppenwolftheatre. Have a comment about your overall experience at the theater? Please ask us for a customer service form to fill out, or e-mail us at customerservice@ steppenwolf.org.

Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance

Need to contact a patron during a performance? If you need to contact a patron during a performance in our Downstairs or Upstairs Theaters, please call our Concierge Desk at 312-932-2476. Hours: one hour prior to curtain until 15 minutes after curtain call.
