Language is explored in the play both as a means of communication and as a barrier to it. The home of Christopher and Beth is a veritable Tower of Babel. People talk over each other, music obscures conversation, Christopher’s language tapes ride over conversation, Daniel’s speech breaks down into stutter, Ruth sings and is silenced. The language of the family is defined by argument and everyone struggles to be heard. Billy, the youngest of the siblings, is deaf in a family that does not sign, but glories in verbosity. When Billy meets Sylvia, everything changes. Sylvia is Billy’s entrance into Deaf culture. Raised in a deaf family, Sylvia is a hearing person who is slowly going deaf. She lives in both a hearing and a deaf world, proficient in sign and conversant in speech: a member of both tribes. Her presence alerts Billy to the ways he has never been “heard” in his own family. Where then, does his most authentic tribal identity reside? Family is the fundament of tribal identity—but has that identity stifled his voice? Does his family hear him at all? Or has his identity been assigned him? Do any of them truly hear each other? I think the play is a remarkable exploration of family, of what it means to be heard, of identity as defined both by “tribal” ties and of individuality within that

tribe. And of “disability.” What truly does it mean to be “disabled”? Is it Billy’s deafness? Or might the disability reside more in the family’s inability to hear the authentic voice of each other? I think the play speaks to all of us. It doesn’t matter that our family might not include a person who is hard of hearing. The huge struggle in every family, it seems to me, is how to balance the cohesion of our “tribe” and the imperative of individuality. We assume that it is family that knows us best. And there is a great deal of sentimentality around the idea that home is where the heart is. But have you ever felt utterly unheard in your family? Have you ever felt that your family is the last place that you can be known? The terrible irony is that both are true. We are deeply and uniquely known in family. We are also, I would suggest, our own great mystery there. So what presides? Tribes might offer us a clue. There is a capacious language of love that hears and sees all and is, ironically—and perfectly, fittingly— utterly silent. It is communicated more by gesture—by action—than any words could provide. It is born by the signs of our connection. It is incredibly simple. It is the gesture of the heart.

Bios Alana Arenas (Sylvia) joined the Steppenwolf Theatre Company ensemble in 2007 and created the role of Pecola Breedlove for the Steppenwolf for Young Adults’ production of The Bluest Eye, which also played at the New Victory Theater OffBroadway. She recently appeared in Belleville, Head of Passes, Good People, Three Sisters, The March, Man in Love, Middletown, The Hot L Baltimore, The Etiquette of Vigilance, The Brother/Sister Plays (Steppenwolf Theatre Company); Disgraced (American Theater Company); and The Arabian Nights (Lookingglass Theatre Company, Berkeley Repertory Theatre and Kansas City Repertory Theatre). Other theater credits include The Tempest, The Crucible, Spare Change, The Sparrow Project (Steppenwolf Theatre Company); Black Diamond (Lookingglass Theatre Company); Eyes (eta Creative Arts); SOST (MPAACT); WVON (Black Ensemble Theater); and Hecuba (Chicago Shakespeare Theater). Nina also directed her second play, Tiger Country, at Hampstead Theatre. She directed Jumpy at the Royal Court Theatre, later transferring to the West End, and Shades (Critics Circle and Evening Standard Awards for Most Promising Newcomer). Her commission for the Royal Court Theatre, Tribes, directed by Roger Michell, won an Offie award and was also nominated for both Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for best new play. Tribes opened to rave reviews and won the 2012 Drama Desk Award for Best New Play and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Play. Nina recently opened Longing at Hampstead Theatre. Austin Pendleton (Director) has been a Steppenwolf Theatre Company ensemble member since 1987. His acting credits at Steppenwolf include The Crucible, The Sunset Limited, Uncle Vanya, Valparaiso and Educating Rita. His previous directing credits at Steppenwolf include The Birthday Party, Time Stands Still, Detroit, Love Song, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, Harvey, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Three Sisters, Loose Ends and Say Goodnight, Gracie. His play Orson’s Shadow premiered in the Steppenwolf Garage and was seen again in the same production (directed by David Cromer) at the Chicago Center of Performing Arts and the Barrow Street Theatre in New York. His other plays that have also been produced in Chicago include Uncle Bob (Steppenwolf Theatre and recently Mary-Arrchie Theatre) and Booth (Writers’ Theatre). He recently appeared in the Public Theater production of Mother Courage and Her Children and appeared on

Last year, he directed Detroit at the National Theatre of Great Britian and Ivanov (with Ethan Hawke) at Classic Stage Company. Three seasons ago, he played in Rosmersholm at the Pearl Theatre and directed Three Sisters at Classic Stage Company (winning an Obie for his work). He also wrote the book for A Minister’s Wife (a musical based on Shaw’s Candida), conceived by Michael Halberstam, with music by Josh Schmidt and lyrics by Jan Tranen that appeared at Writers’ Theatre in Chicago in 2009 and won the Jeff Award for Best New Musical. In the spring of 2011, it was produced at Lincoln Center in New York. His film credits include Dirty Work, A Beautiful Mind, Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, What’s Up Doc, Catch-22 and Wall Street 2. He acted as emcee for the 100 Years Celebration of the Chicago Chapter of the Illinois Association for the Deaf in 2008. His past theater experience included being an ASL consultant (for both actors and interpreters) for Guys and Dolls (Bell School); Mojada (Victory Gardens Theater); and ASL Director for The Wheel (Steppenwolf Theatre Company). Patti Shore Kaden (Production Interpreter) returns to Steppenwolf Theatre Company where she has been interpreting for three years. David Hawkanson (Executive Director) prior to Steppenwolf Theatre Company was the Managing Director of Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, under the artistic leadership of Joe Dowling. AC: There’s a saying—–variously attributed

of Tribes being performed in English or...

to George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde and Winston Churchill‑–that Great Britain and the United States are divided by a common language. Are you struck by any notable differences between the English language productions in London and New York?

Nina Raine: No, they’re performing in Croatian.

AC: Do you speak any other languages? NR: I speak a little bit of Italian, French and German——just enough to not feel freaked out when you’re in that country. I’ve seen Tribes in other languages before, like in Budapest, and you sort of realize how many swear words there are when you hear it in another language—— like: “oh God, there’s that weird-sounding word again!” There are some fascinating difficulties they ran into when translating Tribes into Croatian. There’s a moment at the end of the play in which the projected surtitle is simultaneously about two different events. But that kind of ambiguous reference is not possible in Croatian, so they had to cut it.

AC: And so much of Tribes is about the very nature of language——it’s interesting to think about how different translations might affect the way the play is received.

NR: Well, even sign language is different in

They touched base just before Nina headed off to Zagreb, Croatia to see a production of the play. edited by Jenni Page-White

different countries. American sign is quite different than British sign, even though we share the same language. The bit in the play where Sylvia signs the poem—–I was really enamored by the way they did it in London, which was quite poetic, but when I saw it in New York, it wasn’t quite the same. And the woman who was doing the sign said, “Oh, we don’t have to do it this way——that was just my interpretation.” And so, you can say a thought in several different ways in sign just like you can in spoken word. And the other thing that happens with translation: sometimes a joke won’t work in a different language. You realize that it’s not funny without the sound of the words being funny.

NR: Something that is really exhilarating for an English person is that American actors are more willing to go further emotionally. English actors can get there as well—–I’m really generalizing—–but the production in New York was a bit snottier and scream-ier than the one in London. They really hit the emotional peaks. Comparing David Cromer’s production in New York and Roger Michell’s in London—– David went very naturalistic, he immersed the audience in the clutter of that family. And Roger took away everything except for a table and chairs and a chestnut tree in the garden that reminds you of the family tree—–it was all very clean and symbolic. David’s was a bit more chaotic, more emotionally high-octane. But I don’t think that either way was like, the one way to do it. They were just extremely different.

AC: It’s tempting to imagine parallels between your family and the family featured in Tribes because your father is poet Craig Raine and your brother Moses is also a playwright. Was the play inspired by your family in any way?

NR: Well, the initial nugget came from a documentary I saw about a deaf couple that came from really different families. The man had never learned sign and he was tremendously relieved to find the Deaf community; she was well-ensconced in the Deaf community and all her family signed. And she was pregnant and they wanted the child to be born deaf. And I thought that was really interesting, because there’s a small selfish part of us that wants to pass on our genes and our special qualities to our children. You want the child to be part of your tribe. For them, that meant their child

being deaf. So that got me thinking. And then I met lots of deaf people, and I would scribble down things that they said, and I met someone who was going deaf, and I scribbled more, and slowly these characters started to take shape. And I do have a very noisy, combative and sort of funny family myself, so they were you know, the place where I put these deaf characters.

AC: What can you tell me about what you’re working on now?

NR: Not much really, because it’s not very formed. You sort of write what you know, so all the characters are in their 30s and having babies. I haven’t had any children yet, but it’s what all my friends are doing so it’s all around me. It’s about that and also the legal system… that’s as far as I’ve got, really!

AC: Yeah, my friends and I are in the “kids are about to start kindergarten” phase. So in a certain way, I feel like I belong to a tribe of young parents. Do you feel like you belong to any particular tribes?

NR: A tribe of writers, I suppose? Actually, you know, these sort of intense friendships that I had when I was younger are now finding their way back into my life. And even though we haven’t spoken in years, our lives have sort of turned out similarly, which is really interesting to me. I wonder, maybe there was something we saw in each other when we were young, and we’re still like that—–we’re still that same person? I wonder if that’s a sort of tribe. For instance, I spent a year out in Munich when I was 18, and I met this girl and we got on really well and were pen pals for a bit afterwards. She wrote me a letter about a month or so ago, and I hadn’t heard from her in 17 years. So I asked her, “do you have any children?” And she said no, and I thought that’s so interesting! Because the majority of people I’m surrounded by now do have children, but not my old, old friends. It’s curious.

AC: There’s a play in there somewhere! In the play, Sylvia describes the Deaf community as a kind of protective tribe. What has the reaction been from the Deaf community to the play?

NR: By and large, the deaf people I’ve met have been thrilled that someone was interested in telling a bit of their story. But of course, the play is quite critical of the Deaf community at some moments. Some of the people who have been critical of the Deaf community to me, they’ve said “no, no, I can’t go on the record as having said that.” It’s tricky. But, so: positive memory! We did two press nights for the London production—–one for the Deaf press and one for the hearing press. And I was so nervous on the night of the Deaf press. I sat in the back row and watched, and in the intermission, they were all just talking away in sign. And at the end of the play, they all clapped in the deaf way—–which is to wave your hands—–and Jacob Casselden, who played Billy, looked out and saw them all and waved his hands back at them and it was really moving. Because that was his tribe, and they were applauding him.

How Can You Perform So Well? by Regina Daniels

First Person This season, we’re expanding First Person to include stories from the Steppenwolf community. Performer Regina Daniels has collaborated with Steppenwolf as Theatrical Sign Director, working closely with our American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter teams to ensure that they deliver the most effective interpretation of the artists’ intentions to the deaf audience. She describes herself as hard of hearing, with her hearing loss in the moderately severe range. Regina is originally from New Orleans. She received her Bachelors’ degree from University of Maryland in Dance, and earned a Master of Performance Arts Management degree at Columbia College here in Chicago. For Tribes, I thought it appropriate to share with you the experience of someone with hearing loss. —Aaron Carter Director of New Play Development

I grew up in a deaf family where my mother was raised in oral communication and my sister was born deaf but learned sign language. I was raised to learn how to sign, and I learned how to speak English after taking speech therapy. My mother used to be a dancer and she adores listening to music with vibration. Her decibel range of hearing loss has been in a severe range. She does not wear a hearing aid. She feels that a hearing aid will not benefit her because she communicates with her deaf children. I learned how to dance through my mother and one day, I did a dance performance in elementary school. They played a song that I knew the dance movement. It was Michael Jackson’s “Bad.” My mother and sister would watch his videos and I would stand up and learn his moves. One of the professors, Ms. Smith, recognized my dance skills and she sought to speak to my mother about placing me into a dance studio with her daughter. It was during the summer of 1998, while I was in New York City, that I experienced my first real taste of struggle about my hearing loss. From that point, my drive and determination to succeed as a professional “Deaf” dancer was made firm. Let me back up a bit and explain the situation which I just mentioned. I walked into the dance studio preparing to go through a variety of dance moves as set by the professor leading the audition. A jury at one dance company who would be evaluating the dancers on skill and overall presentation was observing this audition. Before beginning, the professors had notified the jury that I was deaf, so they would know to face me when speaking to allow me a chance to read

We moved as quickly as we could to capture all the movements. But, I was unable to capture all the moves because the professor had forgotten about the need to face me. I was unable to read the instructor’s lips and as a result fell behind and could not keep up no matter how hard I tried. At that moment, I just stopped as the feelings of frustration over came me. I realized that I just needed to try my best to observe the dance movement and feeling the vibration from the dance floor. Despite my efforts, I was not accepted into the dance company. It was that rejection that was my first taste of struggle and my struggle fueled my desire to a new level of excellence. While I continued to elevate my skills as a dance professional I realized that the company I had auditioned for continued to seem disinterested in making the necessary accommodations to incorporate a professional deaf dancer into their company. Their closed door attitude helped me to develop my open door attitude. In the future, I would hope to develop a company that would allow deaf and hard of hearing dancers to become a part of a dance company at any level. My new focus became developing greater skills. As part of developing my skills I knew that college would be vital. I applied to Gallaudet University, which is the only Deaf university. While there, I found that they had a dance company in which deaf and hard of hearing students studied and performed. I took advantage of this opportunity and went to an audition. I was accepted into the dance company and was immediately immersed

in developing how to improve my abilities. Having no communication barriers, my skills and confidence level went through the roof and it gave me hope that I could go on more auditions for the large professional dance companies around the US. On one occasion, while I was a student at Gallaudet University (University for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing) I was in a dance performance there. After the performance we were invited to a reception, people were talking and I was just standing there and looking around. A person walked up to me and began speaking to me. I couldn’t understand a word because I wasn’t wearing a hearing aid. When the person tapped me on the shoulder and started talking quickly, I had to stop and notify the person, that I am hard of hearing. They were shocked. “How can you be hard of hearing, when you perform so well?”

For the run of Tribes (December 5 through February 9), we have worked with Assistive Hearing Systems, Ltd. to install a temporary induction loop on the main floor of the Downstairs Theatre. This is part of a trial to determine the viability of a future permanent installation. If you use a personal device that has T-coil functionality and would like to participate in the trial, please feel free to activate your T-coil for the performance. If you do so, we would love to know about your experience——all feedback is helpful. Before or after your performance, please ask any member of our customer service staff for a survey to complete, or email access@steppenwolf.org. Since this is only a trial, we are unable to guarantee the sound quality afforded by the induction hearing loop. If you typically utilize a service such as an Assistive Listening Device, ASL interpretation or Open Captioning, we suggest that that you still employ that service. You may end up not needing it, but in case the induction loop doesn’t work for you, the play will still be accessible.

Steppenwolf Customer Service Tips Driving to the theater? Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—– Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.
