Welcome to The Wheel by Martha Lavey

Spoiler Alert: Part of the wonder and mystery of The Wheel is in the unpredictable way the story unfolds. This Welcome Letter is an invitation to consider multiple interpretations of this richly layered play. If you’d like to experience the surprises of the journey through The Wheel, we recommend reading this note after the performance.

The Wheel is a multi-layered work that contains references to essential moments in modern Western conflicts, Christianity, classic myths, ground-breaking theater styles, and even contemporary psychology. You will hear in the play the resonances of Bertolt Brecht: Mother Courage, Caucasian Chalk Circle, The Good Person Of Szechuan. Like those plays, The Wheel asks us to look at our world and examine our ethical and moral character—as a people and as individuals. The world is pulling us toward our own survival. Do we have the courage to commit to survival for another, to a community, to our own higher nature? Is it possible to escape the cycle of conflict through personal agency? One of the great intrigues of The Wheel is its movement across place and time. The play satisfies the definition of magic realism: a genre where magic elements are a natural part in an otherwise mundane, realistic environment. This is most strikingly evident in the character of Beatriz who, characteristic of the genre continues to be alive beyond the normal length of life. The play enters a mythological space as Beatriz moves through space and time and in this movement, we are encouraged to see the circular nature of the human experience. Centered around our recurrent engagement in

war, each conflict resonates with its previous incarnation and the tragic futility of this repetition is manifest. The play resolves where it started: at the wedding of Beatriz’ sister, Rosa. The return home is a common trope in mythology and there are many manifestations in popular culture of the repetition and return. They offer the central character the preternatural perspective of history: if we could see our experience within the large sweep of history, could we gain insight? Can we change our own course or the course of human events? I think one interpretive possibility in The Wheel is to imagine the events of the play as a psychological journey particular to Beatriz. We learn in the play that as a child, Beatriz lost her own father to war and this seems to motivate her commitment to reunite the young girl to her exiled father. At the end of the play, Beatriz’ own father appears and I think this reunion with her father allows for an interpretation that the young girl that Beatriz has shepherded through space and time is her own young self, traumatized by her early separation from her father. It is worth noting that the final leg of Beatriz’ journey is the desert and that she makes the point repeatedly that she has been in the desert for 40 days. The allusion to Christ’s 40 days in the desert is explicit. Wikipedia reminds us that:

The temptation of Christ is detailed in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. According to these texts, after being baptized, Jesus fasted for 40 days and nights in the Judaean Desert. During this time, the devil appeared to Jesus and tempted him. Jesus having refused each temptation, the devil departed and angels came and brought nourishment to Jesus.

In the Biblical story, the presiding temptation of Christ is to use magic to prove his divine nature. In The Wheel, this is a temptation presented to the young girl (who may be, as I’ve suggested, Beatriz herself ). In The Wheel, it is Rossignol who appears after the 40 days in the desert. His name is evocative: the name meant “nightingale” in French. It also refers to a wellknown French family of cryptographers and as early as 1406 the word rossignol has served as the French term for “skeleton key” or for any tool that opens that which is locked. So our Rossignol in The Wheel holds a key to meaning. Interestingly, another symbolic meaning for nightingale is the poet. And indeed, the Rossignol character identifies himself as both a naturalist and a magician. I think we hear the merge of these two identities when Rossignol explains magic to Beatriz:

There is nothing in the world that is properly magic. Only nature. That’s magic alright. A baby growing in its mother’s womb, a brown worm that turns into a butterfly, a barren field that breaks with flowers. You want to see something truly miraculous? Look all around you. Look at the way two people look at each other when they’re in love. The rest is just a show, it’s a trick. The Wheel is an incredibly evocative text. We are asked to hear the play through its mythological evocations and its psychological suggestions. At the heart of the play is the question about history repeating itself and the role of individual consciousness and agency in the larger sweep of human experience. Does The Wheel suggest an escape from this cycle? And is that the question? If our actions cannot change the course of human history does that relieve us from the responsibility for moral action? Is the presiding myth of The Wheel (and, indeed, of human experience) the myth of Sisyphus? As Camus says in his essay about Sisyphus: “The struggle itself [...] is enough to fill a man’s heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.”

Bios Joan Allen (Beatriz)

has been an ensemble member at Steppenwolf Theatre Company since 1977, where she has performed in more than 25 productions. A few include Reckless, Cloud 9, Three Sisters, A Lesson from Aloes, Balm in Gilead and her personal favorite, … And a Nightingale Sang. Her Broadway credits include: Burn This (Tony Award for Best Actress), The Heidi Chronicles (Tony nomination for Best Actress) and Impressionism. She has appeared in more than 20 feature films including Compromising Positions, Peggy Sue Got Married, Tucker: The Man and His Dream, Manhunter, Nixon (Academy Award nomination, Best Supporting Actress), The Ice Storm, The Crucible (Academy Award nomination, Best Supporting Actress), The Contender (Academy Award nomination, Best Actress), Pleasantville, Face Off, Yes, The Upside of Anger, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, and she makes a cameo appearance in The Bourne Legacy. Joan was last seen in the HBO series Luck and just completed a film version of Stephen King’s novella A Good Marriage, which should be released in 2014.

David Hawkanson (Executive Director)

prior to Steppenwolf Theatre Company was the Managing Director of Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, under the artistic leadership of Joe Dowling. Before the Guthrie, he served for eight years as the Managing Director of Hartford Stage in Connecticut with Artistic Director Mark Lamos. Earlier in his career, he was Managing Director of Arizona Theatre Company. He was a former senior staff member at the National Endowment for the Arts and subsequently chairman of its Theater Program. He has also had an active career as an arts management consultant and trustee for many national organizations and foundations. He currently serves as a trustee of the League of Chicago Theatres and of the Arts Alliance Illinois. He is a graduate of Lawrence University.

As is our practice, the artistic and marketing departments gather to hear artists speak about their vision for each upcoming show. The following is an edited excerpt of the discussion for The Wheel. To get the group started, Director of Marketing and Communications John Zinn asked how the project came to Steppenwolf. Martha Lavey: I read the play for the

first time—I was one of the judicators for the Susan Smith Blackburn Award a couple of years ago. When I read The Wheel I thought: this is such a Tina Landau play. What it provides is this open landscape... One of the things I think Tina does with such brilliance is to respond to a text that has a huge invitation to the director in terms of the soundscape, in terms of the mise en scène of the play.

We were also looking for a project for Tina and Joan Allen to work together, and they both landed on the play. We’re excited to see Joan explore the character of Beatriz.

Tina Landau: One of the reasons I was

so interested in working with Joan was I saw her do a reading recently and I thought: she is on acting fire.

ML: She is ready to roll. One thinks of Joan

as having a certain calm reserve, but she’s in a different phase. It’s a lot more visceral.

TL: Which is what this play is too. Raw, and

open. As Joan and I discussed the play, we talked about how its language works. When you read The Wheel, you find language that’s blunt, extremely economical. You don’t necessarily hear how it will sound or how it will resonate. It has very little to do with American naturalism. But rather than the bluntness being where the language begins and ends, it invites a whole spectrum of emotion, nuance and psychology that can be filled in. It’s a wonderfully open text, waiting for human voice and passion to animate it even further.

ML: The other thing I thought was going

on with the language—and Chuck Mee sometimes does this as well—is that you lose the national flavor and it takes on this mythic or universal feeling.

TL: Yes. And the key with that is: one needs

to approach it with tremendous specificity. That specificity, however, can take surprising forms. During auditions, when people came in and read with accents it grounded the performances in a literalness that the play resists. But when people sang songs in other languages, something magical occurred in the room. There’s going to be a ton of music in the show. We’ve cast actors who play instruments, some specific to the location of particular scenes in the play.

ML: Given the structural complexity and the technical demands of this play, one might say this play is impossible.

TL: It’s really impossible. I feel utterly

challenged in every regard. I’m so glad I get to do it.

At one point, Joan asked me “Would you say basically this is an anti-war play?” And I said “No.” I mean, yes—on the first level. But there are so many levels on which this play operates. I’m also interested in what’s beneath and around that first level. The Wheel is also a woman’s journey as she deals with an old psychic wound. It’s also a hard, honest look at how we treat and shape the children in our lives. It’s also a magic realist epic. The list goes on—it depends if you want to read on, between or beyond the lines.

“ War can teach you so much about evil, and so much about good.” —Zainab Salbi It’s very tied in for me with three Brecht plays: Mother Courage, Caucasian Chalk Circle and Good Woman of Szechuan. Mother Courage is a portrait of a woman trying to survive in wartime with children. Chalk Circle is a portrait of a woman learning about motherhood as she travels with an abandoned baby. And Good Woman is a portrait of a woman struggling to remain good in a world at odds with goodness.

violence? How can we care for our children? Where does beauty live in a landscape of horror?

ML: Can you share your thoughts about the

I don’t want to sentimentalize the play, I don’t want to soft sell it. But I want to bring out as much light as we can find in it. And it’s there. Look at the butterflies, the bird, the way two people touch or laugh together. The lower the play dives the more it also needs to soar.

TL: —I love her—

TL: I’ve always seen her to be a real,

ML: She grumbles and yet, she cannot

complex child who is abandoned, scared, perhaps traumatized by her situation. As she goes on, she doesn’t become a demon, but is demonized. That is, she becomes a projection surface for those around her so that at various times she is seen as a prophet or a miracle worker, and at other times she’s seen as a satanic presence. But she is neither. She’s a kid. People see in her what they want to see—and yes, perhaps she learns how to take advantage of that.

ML: Tina, will you speak to how you hope to

make this play available to an audience, so that they will take away something that is a nourishment for them, and not just a portrayal of the difficulty of life?

TL: We don’t live in a culture where war has

touched our shores in the direct way we see in The Wheel. So I’ve been thinking about what it means for us to do this play that is different than it might be for someone in Europe or the Middle East, for example. Or what might be the same. This has led me to some of the play’s most core questions, I think: how can we remain human in a dehumanizing world, how can we protect and nurture our capacity for compassion— for tenderness—in a world gone crazy with

leave those children behind. I don’t think it’s an imposition on the play to say that there is something about the human spirit that is championed and is truly what we have to fight for.

TL: Yes! I want to read something from the

author and activist Zainab Salbi: “Everything can be taken from you in a second, but the human spirit is so strong. War can teach you so much about evil, and so much about good.” On the course of her journey, amidst all the terrible things that happen, there’s a beautiful bond that develops between Beatriz and the girl. I hope the experience in the theater is visceral and immediate, more than conceptual or intellectual. That we can experience the events in a direct and immersive way through the eyes of Beatriz. The whole design is about diminishing the fourth wall and continuing the architecture from the theater and thrusting it on stage. I hope that the experience of being in this play trumps everything else. Trumps the idea of it. Yes, I want people to have discussions about its themes, but I hope that more than anything it feels like something to be in this world.

My uncle tells the story of his first memory like this: He is four years old. He is alive and awake in a field of long grass. Not too far from him his mother hangs up laundry. His youngest sister, my mother, is inside with her dolls. It is a typical day. There is nothing strange, no warning in the air or buzz of guns in the distance. He sees his father running up towards the house from the road and thinks they are playing a game. He joins his father in the run, unaware of the urgency in his father’s gait, the panicked way he is yelling something to his mother, that his mother has become a wailing body, pulling the laundry from the wire, collapsing to her knees. Before he knows it, he is holding my mother’s hand and a satchel packed with toys and clothes, following his family as they walk down the road. He remembers his mom saying that they had to find a forest to lose themselves in. On their way, they passed a field full of brown Muslim bodies, the air thick with flies, the ground a pool of blood. The Wheel is a fascinating play that explores the disorienting world of war and violence. The play employs tactics of magical realism, creating a world that bends time, space and place to talk about fundamental issues of war, innocence and humanity. In using the fantastical elements of magical realism, it is able to more accurately depict the cyclical nature of war and violence on people than standard realism. Much like the world created in The Wheel, time and war has become a monolith for my family, an ever-present backdrop. Reading this play felt like peeling back old family albums, seeing the continuity of violence that has been a constant drumbeat to the stories I grew up hearing. My extended family lived through so many wars that they don’t even differentiate them by years or place anymore. They can only tell them apart by how the sounds of the bombs marked changing technology. Or by what bodies looked like when they were extracted from collapsing houses, by

the circumference that a mortar blast left on the sidewalk. To tell the story of my family without telling the stories of war or the lasting effects of violence is impossible. In The Wheel it becomes more and more evident how much war affects Beatriz and the children the longer they stay in it. In dealing with so much violence, part of them hardens. On their journey, the young girl surprises strangers with her tough skin and the way that she does not cry. Operating in a ‘survival’ mode, there is no time for weakness or emotion. The weak don’t survive. The strong are the ones who move forward no matter what, even if it means hollowing themselves out. My family behaves similarly. I’ve never seen an older member of my family cry or show an emotion other than anger. Not even when they had to prepare a funeral for a loved one or when there was a fight or disagreement. They never spent time dabbling in memories or being nostalgic. It was always about getting to the next thing. We rarely looked at photo albums or watched home movies, though oddly enough my uncle always had a camera. When he would show us what he recorded, it would be hours of squirrels at a bird feeder in my aunt’s backyard, not a single shot of our family at the barbeque. It was a mindset I learned early on: move forward, show no emotion. In moving forward, Beatriz clings on to her mission with such stubbornness that she doesn’t see how much the journey is affecting them until it is too late. Growing up with my own family’s trauma around war and violence, this is something that I instantly recognized. Like Beatriz, my uncle also stubbornly remains on his path, letting it build until he is completely surrounded

by it, afraid to let it go. Like Beatriz, he is willing to run in the forest for so long that he ends up losing himself. I know part of this comes from constantly being on the move, shifting from location to location. He won’t get rid of material goods because the fear of not having enough is engrained in him. Throughout my childhood, I watched his friends bring him their junk cars, too rusted and beaten down to even work. He made my sister drive one of these cars—an old white Cadillac that could barely run—ignoring her warnings that something was wrong with it until the axel gave out while she was driving the car. And still, he was reluctant to give it up to the junk shop. All the cars would take up parking lots on the street, a disgrace for the neighbors to look at. But it brought him an odd joy to walk past this barricade he had made from scrap metal, almost as though each accumulation of material good made him believe more strongly that he was here, alive, and would not be moved. I’m very blessed that the closest I personally have come to war has been through stories. But because of my family’s complicated history, my whole life has felt like a quest to try to understand war, or at least some small sliver of it. When I was 21, I decided to move to Bosnia and Herzegovina for a year to research the way that war shapes art. Every day I lived there I was reminded of the way violence stays in each of our bodies and our communities, how the trauma shows up uninvited in our conversations, how it stares us down in our day to day lives long after the shelling has stopped. Once there is a moment of violence in your life, it becomes a consistent threat. You feel it everywhere. It corrupts the light of the world; it lurks behind every corner, ready to take you.

The Steppenwolf ensemble first began performing in the mid-1970s in the basement of a Highland Park church, the ambitious brainchild of three high school and college friends: Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Gary Sinise. Fast forward 36 years and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theater—redefining the landscape of acting and performance. The ensemble has grown to 43 members who represent a remarkable generation of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf’s annual Women in the Arts Luncheon honors women for their distinguished careers in theater, television and film. The afternoon features an engaging conversation with a renowned guest artist and Steppenwolf Artistic Director Martha Lavey, highlighted by memorable film clips and photos from her accomplished career. Now in its fifth year, the luncheon has grown into a sold-out afternoon with 300 leaders from Chicago’s civic, business and arts communities. Proceeds from the luncheon support the next generation of young leaders in the arts. Steppenwolf empowers future artists and audiences by producing productions for teens, providing in-class and after-school workshops, and offering hands-on training for actors and young arts administrators. Rather than arriving to discover that our garage has reached capacity (which can happen during busy performances), please enter the Steppenwolf Parking Hotline (312-335-1774) into your cell phone and call us when you’re a few minutes away from the theater—we’ll tell you if there’s still space available in our facility, or suggest the most convenient alternative. Spending your intermission in line at the bar? Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? This is typically an easy affair—Halsted is a busy street and sees a fair amount of taxi traffic. If you’d like assistance hailing a cab or calling a company, though, just ask a member of the house staff; we’re happy to help.
