Your Kitchen Practice I-VI Series

Instructor: Lauren McLain Fridays, May - October 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm $55 (Members $45) for each class Join Lauren for an evening of enjoyment in the preparation and process of creating a meal. Learn about how to cook in a way that is good for the body and soul: the preparation, planning and choreography for the chef that is you, including thoughtful consideration of the flavor and energy that you create with ingredients your body craves. 2021 Class Policy - including COVID-19 Restrictions Cancellations: Courses and workshops are cancelled if minimum enrollment is not met. If a course is cancelled, the center makes every attempt to inform students and offers a full refund or credit towards another course. If a student must withdraw from a class, a refund less a $10 processing fee will be issued if cancellation is received at least one week prior to the first day of class*. Withdrawals in less than one week or “no shows” will not be eligible for a refund*. Payment is due in full at the time of registration. *this does not apply to cancellations caused by COVID-19 Materials/Supplies: Some courses require a materials fee and/or supplies. Material fees, if any, are due at time of registration. Supply lists will be sent upon request and are available on the website. Participants are responsible for their own lunch and/or snacks. Day-long classes include a lunch break. Use of Oliver Art Center’s kitchen is allowed, but limited to use of refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker.

COVID-19: masks are required from every visitor to the art center (regardless of vaccination status); social distancing will be observed. You are asked NOT to attend class if you are experiencing any symptoms related to COVID or if you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. 14

The Studio

The Oliver Art Center ceramic studio is a light-filled room that looks out on Lake Michigan with large garage doors that are often open during the summer. The studio is equipped with eight ceramic wheels, slab roller, two large worktables, pug mill, and two electric kilns, a separate glaze area and additional outdoor work space for the summer months.

Year-Round Open Studio

Instructor: Steve Kline Every Thursday, 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm $115 (Members $90) + $10 lab fee for a sixblock total of 18 contact hours This open studio format is designed to give the community broad access to the ceramic facility. Each session is three hours on Thursdays for six weeks. All skill levels are welcome. Explore making vessels, tiles, sculpture with slabs, or work on the wheel. Open Studio is loosely organized to allow personal growth and discovery. Assistance in problem solving for a success is offered in any direction you might be interested in. Adults may share the experience with a child under 18 but must always be

present if child is under 12. Price includes 25 lbs. of clay, glazes, and firings.

Introduction to Clay I

Instructor: Steve Kline $115 (Members $90) + $10 lab fee This class is an introduction to the ceramic wheel and hand building with clay. The challenge of simple forms, cups, and bowls will lead to more complex forms with more parts (i.e. teapots with spout, lid and handle, or lidded jars with feet). Participants may work at their own pace and explore the wheel as a tool to create shapes or work on hand-built forms or follow a personal direction. Price includes 25 lbs. of clay, glazes, and firings. Additional clay available for purchase. Introduction to Clay II

Instructor: Steve Kline $115 (Members $90) + $10 lab fee This class is an introduction to the ceramic wheel for beginners and a continuation for more advanced level students to strive for more complex shapes. We will discuss the success and challenges of forms created on the wheel, planning in advance, what to strive for, timing various applications, and alteration of wheel-thrown shapes. Hand-built forms, like simple box shapes for beginners and additional surface relief, carving, layers, and appendages Steve Kline

Instructor: Steve Kline $115 (Members $90) + $10 lab fee This class follows Clay II in format and will have special goals for the participants. Check www.oliverart.org for more details. Introduction to Clay IV

Instructors: Steve, Trish, and Louise have been involved with OAC for many years. Their knowledge and assistance has been invaluable to the ceramics program. Steve Kline made a name for himself as an artist in Louisiana, making monumental sculptures for public and commercial spaces. His works can be found at Armstrong Park in New Orleans, Tulane University, a public playground in New Orleans, and other locations. He and his family recently returned to Northern Michigan and have completed renovation work on their studio. Trish Early is a lifelong arts educator and ceramicist with a special interest in murals, mosaics, and tiles. She enjoys guiding students of all ages, including families, in practical and fun workshops. Louise Cameron spends her summers volunteering at OAC. Also a volunteer at the St. Louis Art Museum, Louise lends her knowledge and experience to assist students in the studio.

Classes are open to all skill levels Join at any time and no experience is required!
