Instructor Biographies Abeel, David: For 20 years, David Abeel has been crafting and teaching Windsor furniture in his free time, which provides a great escape from his day job managing and fundraising for various nonprofit causes, most recently Benzie Area Christian Neighbors. David offers classes at the Home Shop of John Wilson Oval Shaker Box Maker in Charlotte, Michigan, as well as chair making classes in Northern Michigan. Abdo, Grainger Lorrie: Lorrie is colorful - at least her artwork is! Whether she is printing monotypes with a Gelli-Plate, creating dimensional handmade paper artwork, or painting with paste for surface design and collage pieces, she is motivated first by color. Texture is a close second. Working with her chosen materials and found objects, she creates compositions with movement, dimension, and excitement. Lorrie is the Administrative Director at the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center and an instructor frequently teaching papermaking, bookbinding, paste painting, surface design, collage, and mixed-media workshops. Lorrie is detailed in her instruction and fun with her delivery. She is a member of the Handmade Paper Guild, Signature Artists Cooperative, and Southwest Michigan Printmakers. Anton-Coburn, Debra: Debra Coburn graduated from Kendall School of Art & Design and went on to open her own award-winning graphic design company, which she ran for ten years. She enjoyed teaching on weekends, which lead to her pursuing teaching certification through Central Michigan University, followed by a Master’s degree. She spent 15 years teaching art at Traverse City Area Public Schools K-12. A new inspiration occurred about 10 years ago when Debra went out to Portland, Oregon, and learned about glass fusing. Eventually, she decided to leave a full-time teaching position to branch out on her own as a glass fusion teacher and artist. Her work as an artist keeps her creative fires lit and empowers Debra to show her work at art galleries and at art festivals, while teaching gives her the opportunity to watch the awe and wonder of students seeking a new medium of expression. Brunger, Steve: Steve has 15 years’ experience making jewelry with Petoskey and beach glass. He works in art shows from March to December and belongs to two farmer market organizations. His state business license is called Point Betsie Creations and he is from East Lansing, Michigan. Bynum, Beth: As a child growing up on a farm in Kingsley, Michigan, Beth wanted to be both an artist and a teacher. After graduating from Kingsley Area Schools, she attended Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City and graduated from Central Michigan University with a BS in Elementary Education. Her first teaching job was with the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Teec Nos Pos, Arizona, on the Navajo Reservation. She returned to Michigan in 1976, and joined Buckley Community Schools, teaching 5th grade, 5/6th grade Science, 3/4/5th grade reading and writing, art, and computers. When not creating art, Beth enjoys reading, gardening, working on her house, teaching, and traveling. Her love of travel has taken her around the world, to Japan, India, Greece, Europe, and recently to Canada, Paris, and cross-country to see the redwoods. David, Douglas: Douglas David has painted his way across the country, capturing the beauty and spirit of the things he loves - tranquil country landscapes, sunrises and sunsets on his favorite beaches, a simple pitcher of spring lilacs or peonies, a lemon, lime or a slice of watermelon on a checked tablecloth. Paintings that reflect comfort, warmth, meaning and simplicity reflect everything important to him - his closeknit family, life-long friendships, creatively fulfilling work, and giving his best. A recipient of numerous regional and national awards and honors, Douglas’ teaching is a way of giving back and sharing some of his journey with those who choose to study with him. Finn, Lauren: Lauren Everett Finn creates colorful acrylic and mixed media paintings depicting a wide variety of subjects, both real and imagined. She’s currently working on a series of 200 bouquet paintings, but likes to work on abstracts as well, for the variety and the challenge. Lauren also enjoys teaching painting classes and workshops. She says, “There’s nothing like seeing painters learn something new. I love the energy of a classroom. All that creativity swirling around is inspiring!” Lauren creates in her home studio on Big Platte Lake in Honor, Michigan, and is represented by Synchronicity in Glen Arbor and Tvedten Gallery in Harbor Springs. Foster, Nancy: Nancy Foster has been involved in the arts since childhood. She has studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and other smaller art centers. She is a graduate of Smith College and has been an instructor at the Oliver Art Center and its predecessor, The Crystal Lake Art Center, since the early 90’s. Foster works in oil, pastel, and watercolor. Foster splits her time between San Francisco, Chicago
and Michigan. She has exhibited in these areas and her work has been collected in public and private collections. Gianola, Ron: Ron was born in Detroit in 1950, drew from an early age, attended Detroit’s premier magnet Cass Technical High School and the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, later known as Center for Creative Studies, studying Industrial Design, Drawing, and Painting. He worked throughout the state of Michigan as an artist and designer. “As a male honor student, excelling in math, who could also draw, I had the drafting/engineering/manufacturing/corporate culture pretty much handed to me, possibly forced on me. Fortunately, I eventually found a way into the rich creative culture of the time and place to explore the creative, personal, humanist side of life and the mind. Rather than depict the specific, I work in a more personal, poetic manner using a harmony of forms from observed, created, and remembered sources in their own beautiful color universe. Hamp, Leslie: Leslie leads immersion workshops that blend the visual journaling and soulful exploration. She is a Master Coach, Journal to the Self-Instructor, and author of Create the Life you Crave and its companion Beautiful Journal. In her free time you will find her immersed in art journaling, audio storytelling, and crafting her own standup paddleboard. Hawley, Peggy: Peggy Hawley holds the Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from The American University in Washington, D.C. She taught art to adults and children in the Washington area before moving to Frankfort. Her oils and oil pastels of landscapes, marine scenes, stilllife, and interiors are in individual and corporate collections and may be seen in local galleries as well as in her home studio. Hunnel, Mike: “I am a retired Engineer living the split life of 6 months in Beulah and 6 months in Fort Myers FL. My career as an engineer has always been my job but cooking is my passion and strangely there is a connection between the two. They both are creative and both require a good deal of planning to get the optimum results. Growing up, my mother, who was a fine southern cook, took notice of my apparent interest in how the evening meals were put together. Over time she soon had me helping her and I began to learn many of the basics of cooking. Another cooking eye opener was the love for travel, seeing and experiencing different parts of the world opens your eyes to sights, sounds and in my case ‘tastes’. At times the opportunity arose to take a cooking class while abroad, what a treat. It was at this time I began to get more serious about cooking and how I could learn more. Although not a formal Chef, I probably by now have 100 hours of Culinary class time behind me with many classes taken from fine chefs at schools such as Northern Michigan College and Schoolcraft College.” Joppich, Edee: Edee received her BFA degree from Marygrove College in Detroit, followed by graduate studies at Wayne State University. Her paintings have been accepted in more than 200 national and international exhibitions, receiving many awards. Twelve art books include her works. Among her many honors are a fellowship from the International Society of Experimental Artists and a signature membership in the National Collage Society. For 40 years, Edee has shared her knowledge and techniques with students in Michigan and other states, returning annually to the Oliver Art Center since 1990. Keranen, Karen: Growing up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Karen gained an appreciation for nature. Her family lived in the Porcupine Mountain Park while her father was the manager there. She graduated from Ontonagon High School and attended Northern Michigan University for a degree in Elementary Education and Michigan State University for an MA and Early Childhood Specialist degree. She received a Fulbright Scholarship as an exchange teacher in Cornwall, U.K. After 39 years of teaching in the public schools of Michigan, she retired and pursued art in several mediums, taking classes at the Oliver Art Center in pastels, watercolor, fiber art, glass, and acrylics. Kindy, Cedar: Janet ”Cedar” Kindy has been painting for over 30 years. She is passionate about watercolor and changing its bad rap about being a difficult medium. Using her teaching format, anyone can paint a successful watercolor. A graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago, she has studied with master watercolorists Irving Shapiro, Nita Engles, Alvaro Castagnet, and painted with Gorden MacKenzie. Her watercolor, “Jersey Dunes,” was a finalist in the Artists’ Magazine 2015 Annual Competition. Lingg, Susan: Susan Lingg was born and raised in Michigan, spending vacation time on the big waters of Lake Michigan and small lakes and studying art along the way. She is a self-taught, intuitive painter. Her first art show was a clothesline exhibit at the age of eight. Susan has been exhibiting her work at art fairs, festivals, libraries, universities,
government buildings, and galleries since 1982. She teaches watercolor and handmade paper through various institutions and privately. Susan is artist/owner of Watercolors and Oils by Susan, a studio snuggled in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, as well as the Country Framer, a custom picture frame shop and gallery in Cullowhee, NC. Marshall, Carol: Having never sewn before and continuing to grow her art from mural painting, Carol began to create scenes with fabric transforming her visions into art quilts. Using scraps of fabric samples from a local upholsterer and a $50 sewing machine, she began to create with cloth as she did with paint, blending and layering to fashion landscapes, abstracts, and city scenes. Her work encourages one to reach out and touch the work and become part of it. May, Sarah: Sarah Tule is a watercolor artist from northern Michigan. She began painting in high school and afterward decided to pursue it as a career. She has been painting professionally for over ten years and has since been finding joy in sharing what she has learned with others. Sarah and her husband live in Indian River near Burt Lake. McLain, Lauren: Lauren, a Registered Yoga Teacher, pursued her certification from Core Power Yoga in Chicago, subsequent to receiving her Master of Science in Human Resources from Loyola University Chicago. As a home chef, she cooks and teaches from a repertoire learned through a tradition of celebration in family shared meals, using her knowledge in yogic wellness to enhance the energy and nutrition in the making and enjoyment of each dish. Rosemary is an accomplished textile designer, seamstress, and food enthusiast. She spent every summer as a child and teenager with her French grandmother, learning the art of simple delicious cooking. Sunday’s roasted chicken was always prepared and presented as an act of love to a deeply appreciative family. Over the years she has provided excellent food to many businesses and individuals through Parsley, Sage and Rosemary, her catering business. She specializes in creating savory and sweet appetizers. Preparation tips, cleaning as you cook, and a strong emphasis on ‘mise en place’ have been her success strategies. Paone, Don: “The process of creativity is a release and a comforting of the soul while it enjoys a respite from the day-to-day distraction that is life. My passion is to re-create beautiful paintings that bring vibrant color and free-flowing brush strokes that help people find peace and enjoyment in viewing my work. The therapeutic value of enmeshing one’s self into an image, a free mind, is priceless to me. I have experience in training and teaching the culinary arts and operations. I have been training and teaching for 38 years in the foodservice industry. I believe in experiential learning makes this a great workshop opportunity.” Powers, Chick: Chick Powers started his art career as a junior at Central Michigan University where he earned his BA in 1967, MA in Art in 1972 and MA + 15 in 1994. I learned a great deal from my middle and high school art students in the twenty-five years I spent with them. One of the most important things they taught me was how to play; to leave fear behind and approach art with an open mind and spirit. However, I have always been enthralled with jewelry makers. The first things I looked for at art shows and fairs were the jewelry booths where I stood in awe at the incredible shapes and designs created with metals and stones. Stones are another love of mine. As a child I walked the shores of Lake Michigan and other smaller lakes where I lived looking for tumbled stones. The variety of shapes, colors, and striations in them are nothing short of works of art. “ Yee, Pam: Pam Yee is a mixed media artist and book maker (altered, artist, hand bound) who enjoys cooking.
