Instructor Biographies Abeel, David: For 20 years, David Abeel has been crafting and teaching Windsor furniture in his free time, which provides a great escape from his day job managing and fundraising for various nonprofit causes, most recently Benzie Area Christian Neighbors. David offers classes at the Home Shop of John Wilson Oval Shaker Box Maker in Charlotte, Michigan, as well as chair making classes in Northern Michigan. Anton-Coburn, Debra: Debra Coburn graduated from Kendall School of Art & Design and went on to open her own awardwinning graphic design company, which she ran for ten years. During that time, she enjoyed teaching on weekends, which lead to her pursuing teaching certification through Central Michigan University, followed by a Master’s degree. A new inspiration occurred about 10 years ago when Debra went out to Portland, Oregon, and learned about glass fusing. She pro ceeded to attend workshops North Carolina, Upstate New York, and Florida to fine tune her glass fusing skills. Eventually, she decided to leave a full-time teaching position to branch out on her own as a glass fusion teacher and artist. Her work as an artist keeps her creative fires lit and empowers Debra to show her work at art galleries and at art festivals, while teach ing gives her the opportunity to watch the awe and wonder of students seeking a new medium of expression. Brunger, Steve: Steve has 15 years’ experience making jewelry with Petoskey and beach glass. He works in art shows from March to December and belongs to two farmer market organi zations. His state business license is called Point Betsie Crea tions and he is from East Lansing, Michigan. Bynum, Beth: After graduating from Kingsley Area Schools, she attended Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City and graduated from Central Michigan University with a B.S. in Elementary Education. Her first teaching job was with the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Teec Nos Pos, Arizona, on the Nava jo Reservation. She returned to Michigan in 1976, and joined Buckley Community Schools, teaching 5th grade, 5/6th grade Science, 3/4/5th grade reading and writing, art, and comput ers. When not creating art, Beth enjoys reading, gardening, working on her house, teaching, and traveling. Her love of travel has taken her around the world, to Japan, India, Greece, Europe, and recently to Canada, Paris, and cross-country to see the redwoods. David, Douglas: Douglas David has painted his way across the country, capturing the beauty and spirit of the things he loves-tranquil country landscapes; sunrises and sunsets on his fa vorite beaches; a simple pitcher of spring lilacs or peonies; a lemon, lime, or a slice of watermelon on a checked tablecloth. Paintings that reflect comfort, warmth, meaning, and simplici ty reflect everything important to him--his close-knit family, life-long friendships, creatively fulfilling work, and giving his best. A recipient of numerous regional and national awards and honors, Douglas’ teaching is a way of giving back and sharing some of his journey with those who choose to study with him. Finn, Lauren: Lauren Everett Finn creates colorful acrylic and mixed media paintings depicting a wide variety of subjects, both real and imagined. She’s currently working on a series of 200 bouquet paintings, but likes to work on abstracts as well, for the variety and the challenge. Lauren also enjoys teaching painting classes and workshops. She says, “There’s nothing like seeing painters learn something new. I love the energy of a classroom. All that creativity swirling around is inspiring!” Lauren creates in her home studio on Big Platte Lake in Honor, Michigan, and is represented by Synchronicity in Glen Arbor and Tvedten Gallery in Harbor Springs. Gianola, Ron: Ron was born in Detroit in 1950, drew from an early age, attended Detroit’s premier magnet Cass Technical High School and the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, later known as Center for Creative Studies, study

ing Industrial Design, Drawing, and Painting, and worked throughout the state as an artist and designer. “I grew up in the working-class manufacturing cyclone of 1950's De troit. Painting called me as a mythic vocation embodying the essential mystery and spiritual beauty of nature and the hu man psyche. My paintings are the result of my over fifty-year long experience with the Art Spirit, pursuing the possibilities of a personal transformative vision, engaging emotion, expres sion, and the poetry of visual music. Rather than depict the specific, I work in a more personal, poetic manner using a harmony of forms from observed, created, and remembered sources in their own beautiful color universe. I paint with enough content that the mind and imagination are pleased and with enough literal image that the eye is also satisfied. Hamp, Leslie: Leslie leads immersion workshops that blend the visual journaling and soulful exploration. She is a Master Coach, Journal to the Self Instructor and author of Create the Life you Crave and its companion Beautiful Journal. In her free time, you will find her immersed in art journaling, audio story telling, and crafting her own standup paddleboard. Hawley, Peggy: Peggy Hawley holds the Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from The American University in Washing ton, D.C. She taught art to adults and children in the Washing ton area before moving to Frankfort. Her oils and oil pastels of landscapes, marine scenes, still-life, and interiors are in indi vidual and corporate collections and may be seen in local galleries as well as in her home studio. Hayes, Eleonora: “I have been painting and drawing since childhood. In Europe I learned how to draw and paint like the old masters. In USA I was introduced to the contemporary methods and theory. Thus, earning my MFA in painting and drawing. My works have been shown in museums, colleges, universities, and galleries. In my works I am juxtaposing the realistic and the dreamlike, integrating contrasting criteria: objective and subjective expression. Living in Northern Michi gan for about 12 years drew me into the beauty and serenity of the surroundings. I am mostly painting special places where I find peace. I am showing this through the materials and tech niques of art what I feel and how important nature is to me.I also have been teaching art classes for kids and adults for 20 years in various organizations. Some of them include CMU, MMCC, Midland center for art, Crooked Tree Art Center and College for Kids, TCAPS.” Kindy, Cedar: Janet ”Cedar” Kindy has been painting for over 30 years. She is passionate about watercolor and changing its bad rap about being a difficult medium. Using her teaching format, anyone can paint a successful watercolor. A graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago, she has studied with master watercolorists Irving Shapiro, Nita Engles, Alvaro Castagnet, and painted with Gorden MacKenzie. Her watercol or, “Jersey Dunes”, was a finalist in the Artists’ Magazine 2015 Annual Competition. Kovan, Jessica: Jessica is a mixed media artist and educator. Her art is characterized as thoughtful, conceptual, and layered. Working in acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, and collage, she creates layers, colors, patterns and texture that help convey emotions and personal stories. Jessica believes art is an indi vidual journey and creativity should be personal, playful, and insightful. Her overall teaching philosophy is to help students enjoy the process. With a PhD in adult education, and as an Artist Educator for Golden Acrylics and as a Silver Brush Educa tor, Jessica combines her love for painting with her love for teaching. Her work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the U.S. and can be found in numerous publications including “Incite 3 & 4: The best of Mixed Media”, “Art Journal Kickstart er”, and “Begin Again: Creative Responses to Poetry” among others.

Lim, L.C.: Award-winning artist Lesa Chittenden ‘L.C.’ Lim uses her creative spirit to compose images that reflect the pro found beauty of nature and our earth. She brings sensitivity and insight to her paintings which bridges abstraction and representation. Lim’s work is intensely poetic – a few spare trees, a moon or sun, snow , perhaps a small slash of brilliant color or water -- Like an author uses words sparingly in a poem to create a mood or metaphor - not detailing every thought or action, Lim doesn’t paint every leaf or twig, but rather lets the viewer bring to the work their own vision to fill in the gaps. There is a softness, a quiet beauty about her oeuvre that calms the mind and strengthens one’s tie to the natural world. Lingg, Susan: Susan Lingg was born and raised in Michigan, spending vacation time on the big waters of Lake Michigan and small lakes and studying art along the way. She is a selftaught, intuitive painter. Her first art show was a clothesline exhibit at the age of eight. Susan has been exhibiting her work at art fairs, festivals, libraries, universities, government buildings, and galleries since 1982. She teaches watercolor and handmade paper through various institutions and pri vately. Susan is artist/owner of Watercolors and Oils by Susan studio snuggled in the foothills of the Smoky Moun tains, as well as the Country Framer, a custom picture frame shop and gallery in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Manke, Sally: Since childhood, Sally has harbored an affinity for creativity and fabric, creating her first pattern on newspa per and sewing her first garment on a Singer Featherweight around the age of 8. One undergraduate degree in home economics, a master’s degree in art, and a 25-year career teaching art and life skills later, Sally’s perfect day is still one spent in her home studio with fabric spread far and wide, where ideas and possibilities to create abound. Sally enjoys crafting traditional quilts, coiled rope baskets and all forms of fiber art, but her passion is art quilts. She particularly enjoys confetti quilts that unite color and texture using precise quilting skills and artistic creativity. Thousands and thou sands of bits of batik fabric are “painted” on quilt batting and backing before quilting to stabilize and add fine details. Sal ly’s work has been featured at juried quilt shows throughout the U.S including the American Quilter’s Society shows and International Quilt Festival. Her innumerable awards include a blue ribbon at QuiltWeek in Paducah, Kentucky - ostensibly the Red Carpet of quilt guild shows - and a Red Hot Best nod as Northern Michigan’s Best Visual Artist in 2016. She enjoys sharing her expertise through trunk shows, classes, and workshops at quilt shops and guilds. Mehaffey, Mark: Internationally recognized artist Mark E Mehaffey is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society; Dolphin Fellow, the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor USA Honor Society, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America; Signature Life Member - and Distin guished Master, Watercolor West, the Rocky Mountain Watermedia Society, the Louisiana Watercolor Society; Sig nature Life Member, the International Society of Experi mental Artists, Signature Life Member and the International Society of Acrylic Painters. He has won major awards in juried exhibitions internationally including the Silver Medal of Honor (twice) and the Arches Paper Co Award from the American Watercolor Society, the Beverly Green Memorial Purchase Award from the National Watercolor Society, M. He wrote “Creative Watercolor Workshop”, published in 2005. Mark’s latest book, ‘En Plein Air Acrylic’, Walter Foster Publisher was re leased in 2019. . His work is included in the permanent collections at the Neville Public Museum, Green Bay, Wiscon

sin, the Muskegon Museum of Art, , the National Watercolor Museum of Mexico City, Mexico, Quanhua Watercolor Art Gallery, Zhoujiajiao, China and the Dachong Art Gallery, Zhongshan, China. Richmond, Joan: Joan Richmond, a graduate of the Art Acade my of Cincinnati and holding an MFA from the University of Notre Dame, taught painting for 10 years at Northwestern Michigan College and continues to instruct drawing and painting workshops. Richmond works both in open air-Michigan, Ireland, Canada, Italy—and her studio in Traverse City. She exhibits regionally, is represented in Midwest cor porate collections, and has served at several residencies including visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome the winter of 2015, 2016, and 2020. Ryan, Janet: Janet creates unique jewelry pieces using Ster ling Silver, mixed metals, beach stones, authentic beach glass, and other natural stones. She started collecting stones and beach glass along the Lake Michigan shoreline as a child and began creating and selling jewelry in 2005. In addition to designing and creating jewelry, Janet teaches Metalsmithing and jewelry workshops in art centers in and around Leelanau County. She co-teaches the Silversmithing class for the Grand Traverse Rock and Mineral Club and was invited by the Inter national Society of Experimental Artists to teach at their Summer 2021 Annual Symposium on Mackinac Island. Thompson, Susan: Susan is an artist and painter living in the serene woods of northern Michigan where she maintains a studio and full-time art practice. Susan gravitated to abstract art during her teen years in the early 70s, just outside of D.C. where she enjoyed lots of opportunities to view art at major museums and galleries. She began developing her expres sive, abstract style as she completed a BFA in painting at VCU in Richmond, VA in 1977. She received an M.A. in Art Therapy at The University of Illinois Chicago, 1985. She pursued a career in mental health counseling and a private psychother apy practice while continuing to paint and exhibit in the Chicago area. Since moving to Michigan her work has been exhibited in Chicago, Illinois, Muskegon, Ann Arbor, Glen Arbor, Frankfort, and Petoskey. Her abstract oil paintings and multi media work invite the viewer into a wordless experi ence of a “half-remembered” life where special ambiguity, sensuality, and transience are at once beautiful and melan choly. VanHouten, Adam: Adam VanHouten has worked with a wide variety of art media, currently focusing on watercolor, acrylic and oil Painting. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and Art Education from Western Michigan University and a master’s in education from Michigan State University. He currently is a full-time visual art instructor for Traverse City Area Public Schools, adjunct painting instructor at NMC, and teaches a variety of workshops and classes for adults. Born and raised in Traverse City, he is an artist with a commitment to both sharing his learning through teaching and advocating for the expansion and growth of the visual arts in Northern Michigan. Veatch, Steven: A native of Denver, Colorado, and resident of the Pikes Peak area, Steven is a well-known author whose publishing credits include chapters to three different nonfic tion books, numerous essays, newspaper and magazine articles, and poems. Veatch received an MS in Earth Science. Wernet, Wendy: Starting out as a photographer, Wendy began taking art classes and found encaustic art completely by accident. She immediately became intrigued with the medium. There were so many endless techniques, that to this day, she is still discovering new possibilities. Her crea tions typically involve either abstract or landscape themes. Wendy has been in several juried exhibitions across Michi gan, had a solo show in April 2017, and teaches begin ning classes.
