Rachel universally the Miss NZ beauty queen CLOE WILLETTS Rachel Millns walked into last week’s much-anticipated Miss Universe New Zealand finals knowing it was her last-ever time entering the Aucklandbased event, and came out wearing the winning crown. Crowned Miss Universe New Zealand in front of a live global audience and full house at Auckland’s Sky City Theatre on Thursday evening, the Peka Peka beauty was “thrilled and surprised” by her first-place win. “I look a little stunned in the photos, as I just couldn’t believe it was my name that was announced,” said Millns, 23, who competed in the nationwide event for her second consecutive year,
following regional stints in Miss Nature Coast and Miss Hutt Valley. The soft-natured beauty therapist said her previous onstage experience and placement in last year’s Miss Universe New Zealand top five paid off. “This year, I was lot more confident and focused, which allowed me to be a lot more relaxed. “I went in knowing what areas I personally needed to work on.” Beating Queenstown’s Monique Cooley and Becky Hingston, originally of Dunedin, Millns came out on top, thanks to a combined judges’ vote and nationwide public online and text voting system.
The panel of judges included modelling industry expert Colin Mathura-Jeffree and guest judge Chalita Yaemwannang, winner of Miss Universe Thailand 2013. Travelling to Florida to represent New Zealand at Miss Universe 2015 on January 18, Millns will also be locking in a trip to Bangkok and Waiheke Island as part of her first-place prize. Excited to attend this weekend’s Coastguard Spring Ball, at Southward Car Museum, in her first public appearance as Miss Universe New Zealand, the dedicated model is set for a busy year juggling photo-shoots, public appearances and a full-time job in Wellington, which she returned to yesterday.
Thankful for the close friendships she developed with fellow Miss Universe New Zealand contestants, Millns said one of the best parts of her glamour-filled experience was “having all the girls from this year’s and last year’s competitions run over to congratulate me”. “Being called Miss Universe New Zealand, it is still sinking in, but I’m sure it’ll start to become more normal,” said Millns, who “couldn’t have done it without the support from local community, family and friends”. “I can’t describe how loved and supported I’ve felt through this process. “I have a lot of thank-you letters to post in the next couple of weeks.”

Otaki MP ‘blown away’ by result DAVID HAXTON Otaki MP Nathan Guy now has a vice-like grip on the Otaki electorate after a commanding election victory. He mustered 19,352 votes, compared to Labour’s Rob McCann, who got 12,018 votes, Green Party’s Maddy Drew, with 2095 votes, Conservative’s Anne Lovelock, 857 votes, and Independent’s Amanda Vickers, 179 votes, and Fred MacDonald, 107 votes. Mr Guy, now into his third term as the Otaki MP, had a majority of 7334 votes. In the 2011 election, he had a majority of 5231 votes, in the 2008 election, when he won the seat, it was a 1354 vote majority. He was “blown away” by Saturday night’s result. “I’m humbled with the majority that has almost increased by 50 per cent, and still waiting on 1931 special votes to be counted,” said Mr Guy, who held an election party at Levin Cobb and Co.
‘
It just shows I’ve got a huge amount of support and I believe I’ve worked incredibly hard over the last nine years, two those terms as the local MP, and I’ll be continuing to work hard in the next three years for local constituents.

supporters that got behind National, and myself.” National would “continue to provide the strong and stable government going forward that Kiwis want”, he pledged. Mr Guy was back to work on Monday carrying on with his ministerial duties until Prime Minister John Key decided the makeup of the new cabinet in the next week or two. Mr McCann, who held an election party at the Waikanae Hotel, said, “The reality is, people didn’t vote for a left of centre government. “It was a disaster for the centre-left.” Personally, he felt “no stone had been left unturned” in his campaign effort. “The tide was going out. Unfortunately, that’s just the way it was, and sometimes you just can’t fight that. “We’ve set a good platform for 2017. “I’ll still be putting my hand up,” he said. “Yes, we’re disappointed with the result, but
we’re very happy that there’s such a significant block of over 12,000 votes, which is a base to work from.” It was difficult to “turn an incumbent over with all the mechanisms they have at their disposal in half a year”. “We will continue to fight the good fight. “And as my son said to me on Sunday, ‘Daddy, now that you’re not too busy, can we do something together’, so we went from a lesson on how to ride a skateboard and then went for a bike ride.” In the Mana electorate, Labour’s Kris Faafoi romped home with 17,363 votes, compared to Hekia Parata (National) 10,578, Jan Logie (Greens) 2574, Roy Barry (Conservatives) 886, Richard Goode (Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party) 332 and Ron England (Democrats for Social Credit) 87. Mr Faafoi had a 6785 majority, up from his 2230 majority in 2011.
Handmade card receives royal response DAVID HAXTON Residents and staff at Ocean View Residential Care, Otaki Beach, have received an extra-special letter in the post. The letter was from a representative at Kensington Palace on behalf of William and Kate — the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The rest home has taken an interest in the royal family, especially when the pair were married. The interest intensified when Prince George was born, and on his first birthday they created a handmade card offering the rest home’s congratulations. The rest home has received a letter from the palace thanking them for their heartfelt card, and more. “We were very impressed,” says rest home recreation officer June Simpson, whose daughter Lesley Simpson worked for the Queen during her OE. “It was so nice for them to respond.
“They had really taken the time to look at what we had done. “We’re now on the royal mailing list.” The letter, written by a royal staff member, said, “Their Royal Highnesses were pleased to learn of the party you had to celebrate Prince George’s birthday, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are grateful to you for taking the trouble to send them some lovely photographs, to mark the occasion, and of the collage you made. “As a thank you for the splendid card, I have enclosed a picture [a photograph by New Zealander Simon Woolf featuring William, Kate and George] that I hope you will all like. “Their Royal Highnesses have asked me to send you all their best wishes.”

Mystery sprayer on wrong track DAVID HAXTON A phantom sprayer is creating various pathways on public land, including a prime beachfront area. The latest area is an extensive sprayed track, using some type of weedkiller, at the southern end of Marine Parade, Paraparaumu Beach, between the beach and the road. “Someone believes council should be putting in paths in these sorts of areas,” leisure and open space asset manager Lex Bartlett said. “It’s probably about 280m of grass. “There won’t be such a cost to it because the grass will recover again, but it has certainly made the area unsightly.” The sprayed track continues on from a well-used concrete pathway that was created by the Kapiti Coast Rotary Pathways Trust and council.
Mr Bartlett said the concrete pathway hadn’t been continued for various reasons, including cost, there was a nearby footpath and cycleway, and it was close to Tahi Rd, which led to a public walkway at the airport. As well as spraying, other damage has included cutting fences and creating new tracks through scrub. “It happens periodically in different locations and has been ongoing for a number of years. “We have discussed this with police and it is viewed upon as wilful damage.” He said people should contact council if they had thoughts of creating tracks on public land. “We would much rather discuss it and see if we agree and then we can help, or they can help, but just taking things into their own hands isn’t right, and there’s often a number of reasons why we wouldn’t do some of these things.” Meanwhile, someone has
stolen a number of concrete retaining wall bricks in the entrance to the Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve, off Tutere St, Waikanae Beach. “Just past the entrance on the right-hand side was a retaining wall that had been there for five or so years,” Mr Bartlett said. “Someone has stolen the whole lot.” The wall was about 20m to 30m long and three layers high. “It was protecting a bank so people wouldn’t try and get around a judder bar.” He said the area wasn’t locked at night because it was a freedomcamping area. “We’ve had no reports of anyone noticing anything suspicious. “I assume someone has gone in there at night and just loaded it all up.” Mr Bartlett said anyone noticing suspicious activity should contact police.

Sketch to be sold for some good causes CLOE WILLETTS Waikanae portraiture artist Kylie King-Hazel is in the final stages of a striking Sir Peter Jackson-inspired sketch work, which is set to be auctioned off for charity at this weekend’s Coastguard Spring Ball. The pencil, pastel and charcoal piece follows a public nomination initiative created by Mrs King-Hazel earlier this year, which ran in June 4’s edition of Kapiti News and invited readers to nominate their favourite public figure connected to the Kapiti Coast. Readers were advised the selected nominee would have their portrait sketched by the talented artist, before being auctioned off to raise money to help rescue girls trafficked overseas. is the first of its kind for Miss King-Hazel, who has seen both local and international commissions for her work, as well as a placement at Waikanae’s Artel Gallery. “I have always wanted to use my art to help others,” said the 34-year-old, who was recently invited by the Ministry of Youth Justice and Kapiti Youth Support to teach drawing to young locals. The almost-complete artwork, which is “based around Mr Jackson and his imagination”, will be cut down and mounted on board, and left unframed so “the winner can choose a frame that suits their home”. As well as containing a portrait of Mr Jackson, who Miss King-Hazel said was “challenging because I’m use to drawing females”, the artwork incorporates characters Arwen
and Galadriel from Lord of the Rings, and Tauriel from The Hobbit. “I want the right person to win this painting. “Someone who will look at it and enjoy it, and think how glad they are they bought it.” Other auctions up for grabs at this weekend’s event include exquisite jewellery from Fishing for Treasure, a month’s supply of Tuatara beer, a shirt signed by basketball sensation Steve Adams, flight packages courtesy of Air2There, Air Nelson and Ray White Real Estate’s Rachael Steinmetz, Pak’nSave vouchers, a hair-care hamper, thanks to Jomp Hair Design, a city break two-night getaway at the Museum Arts Hotel Wellington, an overnight adventure to Kapiti Island, and 10 tickets to a corporate lounge hospitality evening for the Four Nations Rugby League.

Attitude change turns life around

DAVID HAXTON When Tawera Nikau was 15 years old, he got on a mate’s motorbike, looked around to make sure there wasn’t any cops around and went for a spin. A patrol car spotted him and, despite an attempt to escape, he was caught and taken back to the Huntly Police Station. When his father arrived to pick him up, he expected to be taken home. But his father, who knew the sergeant at the front desk, said he could spend the night in the cells. “It was probably one of the worst nights I’ve experienced.” His father collected him in the morning and didn’t say anything — he just shook his head. He was dropped off at home and found his mother upset in the lounge. The cocky teenager was confused — he had had a rough night, not her. “I hadn’t seen my mum cry much, but she was in a bad state that day. “She was embarrassed one of her sons had been in trouble with the police and brought shame on the family. “So, from that point on, I thought I could either take one path or another. “I said to myself that day that I really wanted to make a difference and make my parents proud. “Ultimately, we all have a choice about what we do. “You may have done things in the past, but that’s not going to define your future.” He went on to become one of the world’s best professional rugby league players, with his glittering career seeing him represent the Kiwis, as well as a number of clubs such as the Melbourne Storm and the Cronulla Sharks. Nikau addressed about 70 community-based offenders from Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti at

an innovative programme, spearheaded by the Department of Corrections and involving various other organisations, at Southward Car Museum on Tuesday last week, to educate them about road safety. He told them that after he retired from playing rugby league, he came back to Huntly and bought a brand new Harley Davidson. One day he was riding home when he rode over a hill and found a Landrover had cut a corner and was coming directly at him. Fearing a collision, he dropped the bike to the left and tried to accelerate away, but ended up crashing against the side of the vehicle. “The next thing I know I was doing a backward somersault through the air.” When the dust settled, he tried to get up, but his right leg was a mess and felt like someone had “shoved a red hot poker” down it. After weeks in hospital, which
involved 20 major operations under general anesthetic and six blood transfusions, a doctor told him he might have to stay in hospital for a year to 18 months for doctors to try to save his leg, although there wasn’t a guarantee it would work. Or he could have the leg amputated and be out in three days. Nikau thought about his young family who needed him, and also about a statement from motivational company Team One, where he is a director. The statement says: “The quality of life you will ultimately enjoy is not so much determined by what happens to you, but by your attitude towards it and what you decide to do about it.” So he decided to have his leg amputated and is now leading a full and satisfying life. He said it didn’t matter who you were or where you came from, at the end of the day, “it’s about your attitude towards things”.
Young nurse earns award CLOE WILLETTS Waikanae-based Plunket nurse Katrina Coleman has been honoured as the New Zealand Nurses Organisation’s firstever Young Nurse of the Year. She was “blown away” by her win, which was announced at last Wednesday’s awards dinner in Wellington. Young Nurse of the Year is an award specified for a nurse under 30, who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to their patients and profession. As well as highlighting the standout efforts of an individual young nurse in the workplace, the award illustrates New Zealand Nurses Organisation’s commitment to supporting the collective of younger nurses in the industry. “This is hugely prideevoking,” said Coleman. “The award is nice because it makes missing out on family functions and catching up with friends only occasionally all for something.” The concept of Young Nurse
of the Year stemmed from a team established by New Zealand Nurses Organisation and comprised of nurses, aged 30 and under, who were asked to present ways the organisation can support younger nurses in the workplace. “We are so excited to be presenting this award for the first time. Young nurses are our future and deserve the recognition of their peers, colleagues and the public,” group member Madeleine O’Connor said. “Katrina stood out because of the work she has done in her community. “She’s developed a range of projects working across agencies, which have resulted in demonstrable improvements in the health outcomes of community members. “She is well-liked and respected by clients and colleagues, and also volunteers her own time in the Newtown community. “She goes above and beyond her everyday work.”

Many more will come in November when the Black Sticks men play hockey tests in Paraparaumu against Japan, with council backing. Now, we have an opportunity for progress in a different area. There has been huge interest in what facilities we can put in place at the Otaihanga Reserve, the 60 hectares council bought south of the Waikanae River. Buying that land was one of the best decisions of the previous council. This council will now work with the community to put that land to best-possible use. There is so much to look forward to.

some of the toughest issues facing Kapiti and, in each case, solutions have or are being found. As this council approaches its first year in office, it is a testament to how much has been put in place to give us a base for better decision making. Now it’s time to put all that work to bed. We need to be forward-looking, not backward-looking. The focus has to be on the huge amount of progress being made in Kapiti. Over the last few months, we have seen not just a major economic injection through the expressway work, but also smaller, impressive successes. Managing fear behind success
With the worst of winter now hopefully behind us and the promise of spring and summer just ahead, it’s time to start planning the last part of the year. For those living in the community with an age related illness or those caring for someone with such an illness, it is vital to take care of yourself. Current Government Policy and funding reflects this; with those who are in such circumstances being able to access ‘respite’ funding to provide a break for both parties. It’s interesting to reflect on the rationale behind this. Central Government has a Policy in place for aged-care, based around ‘Aging in Place’. This works on the premise that it is far more desirable for people as they age to remain in their own homes. As well as providing for cares needed in the home, the Policy also acknowledges that it is important for those caring for a family member (often a spouse), to have regular breaks so that they can recharge energy levels and continue with the caring.
A bizarre election campaign. An unpredicted result. I start my rationalisation with a quote from Henry Louise Mencken. The journalist and critic of American life and culture said: “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed — and hence clamorous to be led to safety — by menacing it with an endless series of goblins, all of them imaginary”. The management of fear is a fundamental political tool. It accumulates in the crucible of the non-rational mid-brain. The subliminal psychology of our mainstream citizenship, like that of our nearest neighbour Australia, is linked to the United Kingdom. Did the threat of Scotland’s referendum on independence and the politics of fear and uncertainty, unleashed by those opposed, also reverberate fear here, in the South Pacific? What about the fear, uncertainty and discomfort caused by our own citizenry’s sudden discovery, through Nicky Hager’s Dirty Politics, that the Kiwi brand of Realpolitik we trusted was actually a cesspool of cynicism and nastiness? Then, we have the controversial Kim Dotcom phenomenon. He is German. That’s fine except the media, not long ago, exposed him as a collector of Nazi memorabilia. It was a media beat up but it becomes part of the Dotcom branding. We are a nation that has fought two world wars against the Germans. Hundred-year commemorations of WW1 are being held across the country. Join the dots. Financing the Internet Party is one thing but being in the forefront of its campaign was imprudent. A target for the xenophobic sights of Winston Peters and others. Then the Moment of Truth event in Auckland. Dotcom failed to deliver his smoking gun. But it opened up serious questions on massive intelligence snooping on ordinary Kiwis through New Zealand’s links with the Five Eyes operations. It was
As such, people who fit within this category may be assessed for up to 28 days per year of funded care. The challenge then becomes finding a suitable place for such care to be delivered. Recognising the need for this, four years ago Kapiti Retirement Trust became the first residential aged care facility in the country to develop a dedicated unit providing blocks of respite care to the community. The uniqueness of this service is that the blocks of care can be booked up to six months in advance. This enables the carer to plan for trips away or to be part of special occasions such as family weddings or anniversaries; knowing that the unwell family member is being looked after in an appropriate manner. The Matai Wing, located within the Trust’s aged care hospital at Sevenoaks, focuses on providing quality care in a ‘fit for purpose’ setting. With registered staff on duty 24/7 the often complex, medical needs of clients can be met within an environment which is conducive to personalised care. The rooms are individually furnished and while providing the necessary specialist equipment, also provide for a comfortable stay. All rooms have flat screen TVs, WIFI access and with most having individual fridges and room access to garden areas they do not represent common perceptions of aged care facilities.
Candidate claims discrimination CLOE WILLETTS
Assessment for respite care is carried out by the Care Co-ordination Centre who are contracted by Capital and Coast DHB to do this. You can refer yourself or be referred by your GP. Anyone wanting to know more about the Matai Wing or block respite care can contact Beverley Kirbell, the Trust’s clinical administrator by phoning 04 2970116 or emailing respite@retirekapiti.co.nz In addition to block respite care, the Trust also operates the Nikau Club for those wanting regular, day respite. Again the thinking is, by giving the carer a regular opportunity to do other things - be it meeting with friends, attending clubs or appointments or just having a quiet time at home, it again provides the chance to re-energise and keep caring. The Nikau Club, within the Sevenoaks village provides a purpose designed, small and intimate environment with a home cooked lunch and a daily programme tailored to individual needs. To find out more, contact Beverley on 042970116.

also fascinating to see this aspect of Auckland as a Supercity where whistleblower, American Edward Snowden, holding up in Russia, is beamed in to share giant screens with Australian Julian Assange, himself a refugee in an Ecuadorian Embassy in London. Truly a bizarre global experience. Post elections, Dotcom admitted his personal brand was poison to the Mana Party. Some will go further and say it was poison to the whole election. Many, including John Key, have noted that the Moment of Truth proved a circuit breaker for a National Party under siege. The failure of Dotcom to produce a smoking gun is a factor. The bigger factor was the crescendo that was built up about John Key being directly connected to this massive snooping into the personal lives of Kiwis to benefit foreign intelligence gathering. In Tai Chi and Judo there is a particular move where the full force of the opponent is skilfully redirected back on the opponent. I believe this moment came when, immediately after the Moment of Truth, and just before polling day, Australian intelligence activated their anti-terrorist squads. Kiwis were told that there was a plot, by terrorists connect to the Syrian ISIS, to publicly behead Australian victims and broadcast the gruesome event. The cynics could argue that the Five Eyes look after each other’s interest. Indeed the timing and impact of the Australian intelligence crackdown could not have been more perfect. The negative attack on John Key and the question of mass surveillance suddenly became a positive boost justifying the need to take measures to keep us safe. Are not Australia and New Zealand the South Pacific twins connected to the umbilical cord of the UK? There are other reasons for National’s victory like the fact that with no credible threat from the likes of ACT, National’s policies have moved more to the centre and eaten into Labour’s traditional appeal. They have also kept the economy afloat through a global recession. But the unpredictable result cannot be explained and I find in Mr Mencken’s quote an insight worth exploring.

This year’s general election process did not adhere to “the spirit of democracy”, according to Independent candidate Amanda Vickers, who stood for the Otaki electorate. Vickers, a Waikanae veterinarian with a stance on modernising monetary policy, said the treatment of independent candidates and smaller parties was “disappointing”. “I was specifically told I wasn’t allowed to speak at one event, and at another event the less-known candidates were given less speaking time.” Vickers said the “discrimination”, which included exclusion from candidate question/answer pieces in media publications, stemmed from “not being attached to an established party” and her policies “being based on one fundamental platform — standing against corporatisation”. “Although New Zealand is a democracy, it’s individual people organising the publicity and events, and they’re not bound by any government regulation about democracy,” she said. Fred Macdonald, also an Independent candidate in the Otaki electorate, said he too experienced “failures” during the electoral process. He said the electoral commission did not provide candidate information in a timely manner, which “resulted in both candidates and electors not having full information”. While the advanced voting facility

began on September 3, Macdonald said he only received his personal My Easy Vote card, Otaki electorate candidate nominees, and party lists on September 11. “The information on who had put themselves forward as an electorate candidate, party lists, and Easy Vote cards should have been immediately supplied to all registered voters by mail, once the nominations had closed on August 26,” he said. “Opportunity for advanced voting shouldn’t have commenced until this supply of information process was completed.” He said not all information was made public in time for events such as Meet the Candidates, which resulted in him not being “contacted by any organisers of the meetings to appear and present my political position”. “The present system directly benefits larger parties such as National and Labour, and not the smaller parties and independent candidates.”

Cook and eat healthy real deal Just eat real food! This is something I’ve be preaching forever. I’m a big fan of everyone making good choices when it comes to nutrition, because with good nutrition comes good health. If you eat processed food on a regular basis that is lacking in nutrients, is high in salt, sugar and saturated fats your health will suffer. Good food is fuel that keeps your body running on all cylinders. If you look at your body as a finely tuned Mercedes Benz there is no use putting coca cola in the petrol tank because it will not run as it was intend to. Instead it will cough,
splutter, back fire and probably stop sooner rather than later. So regularly eating pot noodles, sausage rolls, pies, cakes, muffins, hamburgers, fries and just general crap you are sending yourself to an early grave . . . harsh but fair. If you treat your body with a lack of respect it will not be able to survive the riggers of daily life. I love to cook every night
because I’m an active relaxer and I find being in the kitchen very therapeutic. I also know that when I do the cooking and prepare meals for my family I know exactly what goes in my food. If you regularly buy takeaways and processed food you have know idea how much salt, sugar and additives are in the food to make it taste that way. Buy eating normal food I can choose seasonal fruit and vegetables that not only taste great but give me energy and make me feel healthy. My advice is simple:
- 95% of the time eat clean. - If you can’t cook then learn how to cook. - Eat real food. - Cook and prepare your own meals. - Choose water over fizzy drinks and juice. - Eat seasonal fruit and vegetables. - Go to Paper Plus and treat yourself to a new recipe book. - Make soup, sauces and spreads from scratch. - Grow your own vegetables. Remember food is fuel and if you eat clean and natural food your body will maintain energy for longer allowing you to get more out of life.
LEARN TO COOK : treat yourself to a new recipe book.

The Keep New Zealand Beautiful Annual Awards were announced recently in Wellington, and Dunedin successfully secured two awards for the city, including the prestigious Beautiful Towns and Cities Award. The Beautiful Towns and Cities Award recognises and celebrates positive actions taken by communities in local and urban areas to protect and enhance their local environments. They encompass initiatives as diverse as litter prevention, recycling, protection of the environment, preserving heritage, community action and leadership and environmental sustainability programmes. We, as a community, can all do our bit.

We need to regroup as a community and get behind our local Keep New Zealand Beautiful team now to ensure we have any chance of securing this esteemed award again next year.

Waikanae won a Keep New Zealand Beautiful award in 2008. This is a significant achievement for a small community. Securing an award of this nature reflects a lot of hard work and dedication from our local Keep Zealand Beautiful Team and the whole community. This was a job well done. However, it’s time we dusted the shelf off and put Waikanae back on the map again. The town centre project provides a perfect environment to rekindle some of our lost passion. We need to regroup as a community and get behind our local Keep New Zealand Beautiful team now to ensure we have any chance of securing this esteemed award again next year. We can all do our bit. Remember, it is not just the big projects that count — every little one makes a difference. If we want to attract people to Waikanae, we need to showcase our community to the country. Let’s make Waikanae a better place.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
‘Kiwi spirit’ fades away
I am disabled, living on the Super and in a retirement village. On September 11, my barbecue was stolen. This was a premeditated act as it required more than one person to lift it out of my patio, which has a onemeter-high retaining wall around it. I cannot afford to replace this and it is less than the excess on my contents insurance. One reason for having a barbecue is so that it can be used in an emergency, as an alternative means of cooking. As the lowlife that stole it did not get the gas bottle, it will not be of much use to them, unless they steal that as well — and then they will need to fill it. Where has the real Kiwi spirit gone? I have now been burgled three times in 10 years on the Kapiti Coast. MARLENE FROST Waikanae
Handouts don’t make life better
I’m what you’d consider the average Kiwi. While I admire our wonderful democratic society that allows nine-year-old Lara Zampese to write to your paper (Kapiti News, September 17), one does wonder who, at the age of nineyears-old, feeds her this rubbish (at nine, I was building forts up the bush and trapping possums, not caring about politics). So, here’s my story. My mum died when I was eight, leaving four sons — aged four, eight (me), 12 and 15.
Our father was an alcoholic in an age where there was no Ministry of Social Development or Child, Youth and Family. So, us four boys decided we didn’t want a life that our father introduced us into and, without ‘social services’ propping us up, we’d have to stop the cycle and make the best of what was dished up to us. I’m happy to say that at 55, me and my brothers have all done pretty well and we’re welladjusted — and sort of successful — human beings, contributing positively to society without any Government handouts or counselling at all. Our ethos is that no one owes you anything, and if you rely on someone else to make your life “right”, then life is not worth living. I read all this rubbish about our kids living in “poverty”. Well, our Government doesn’t have an obligation to make parents suitable to be parents in a safe environment, whereas we, as parents, have an obligation to ensure our kids grow up in a safe environment. So, no matter how much money we throw at ensuring our kids don’t grow up in poverty, perhaps we should throw some money at parents, who do have an obligation to their kids that they grow up in a healthy and safe environment. So, my message to Lara is, I’d love to catch up with you to say ‘hey, life is a bitch, but if you make that decision that handouts ain’t going to make life any better (but your attitude to life will), then get on with it and, regardless, you’ll succeed in the path of life’. TONY HUNT Otaihanga
Let children be children
Geese push people away from reserve I entirely concur with councillor K Gurunanthan’s comments in your September 17 paper, except that there are four retention lakes in the Awatea/Waterstone reserve. I am one of the many people who use this reserve regularly and who are effected by this worsening problem. I have to say that the council keeps this reserve area in a beautiful condition, where people of all ages should be able to enjoy walking, cycling, and boating. It is just a great pity that the area is spoilt by the massive quantity of geese droppings all over the grass and footpaths. I spoke to a woman recently who said she had stopped walking her dog in the area because it enjoyed rolling in the grass and got covered in geese faeces. Geese only need two things to settle — water to drink and swim in and nicely mown, short grass nearby to feed on. I understand that there are a number of ways to reduce the numbers of geese in this area without shooting them, but, as the councillor says, this is a regional problem, and perhaps even a national one. One thing is certain — given the right conditions, they will continue to multiply. Their lifespan is 20 to 25 years with few or no predators, so this does not bode well for the environment. ANTHONY MYERS Paraparaumu
I was appalled to see a letter in your September 17 paper supposedly from a child of nine years old exhorting people not to vote National. It was obviously written by parents who are Labour or Greens supporters. Parents should let their children be children for as many years as possible — I know many nine-year-olds who do not even know there is an election and are more interested in playing sport and having fun, which is the role of children. I was a little surprised that you, too, choose to publish it. MARGARET BROWN Paraparaumu
Mallard’s history from imagination
Malcolm Thorpe has been surfing the internet for information on our critically endangered parera, or New Zealand grey duck. He would be wise to be more credulous about what he finds there. ‘Talking to your laptop’ is a derisory term used to describe such armchair punditry and it was a major factor in the way the NZ Transport Agency’s scientists assembled their conservation knowledge of Kapiti to present to the Board of Inquiry. To their credit, however, they accepted the video evidence that parera were here in Kapiti when it was put in front of them. Mr Thorpe continues in denial. He has also penned an imaginary history of the introduction of the mallard into New Zealand. English mallards were first
introduced in pioneer times, then banned when it was realised they were interbreeding with parera. Following intensive lobbying by the Colonial Ammunition Company from the end of the 1930s, 30,000 mallard eggs were eventually imported from the United States. This was managed by the Acclimatisation Societies, the forerunners of today’s Fish and Game. What they didn’t realise was that parera migrated to Australia and through the Pacific, so that what was a local conservation disaster has now become a regional one. Mr Thorpe will also be surprised to learn that parera can interbreed with grey teal and the very rare pateke, or brown teal. Such interspecies bed-hopping renders any simple explanation of what is going on in our increasingly endangered wetlands, foolhardy. DEREK SCHULZ Raumati Beach

October the month to quit ciggies DAVID HAXTON A cool 31-day quit-smoking challenge gets under way on October 1. People who sign up for Stoptober get free daily texts, emails and more to help them get through the challenge and hopefully quit smoking for good. To help drum up support for the challenge, a large inflatable red ball has been pushed in various towns throughout the country. Some children and adults pushed the ball along Otaki’s Main St on Thursday. “The reason for Stoptober is that evidence tells us that if someone stops for 31 days their chances of staying stopped is greater,” Mid Central District Health Board smoking cessation collective team leader Fay SelbyLaw said. “It’s another one of the tools we are using to reach Smoke Free Aotearoa 2025.” Fay said smoking was still a big issue in New Zealand. “It has a massive health effect. “Fifty per cent of people who use this product will die from it,”

SPCA visit inspires Brownies to help As a component of their animal world badge, the 63rd Brownie unit from Wainui District, who meet at Raumati Beach, enjoyed a visit from Jennifer Rizzi, an educational officer at Wellington SPCA. She showed a video and talked to the girls about what the SPCA does on a daily basis, shared stories of animals they have helped and emphasised the responsibility of owners to keep their pets happy and healthy. With a region that stretches as far as Otaki and up to the top of the Hutt Valley, dealing with around 6000 animals a year relies heavily on public donations, volunteers, foster homes and re-homing

programmes to keep the organisation running smoothly. The Brownies created a collage poster out of beach materials encouraging support of the SPCA, with each girl donating either petfood, old blankets and towels. The girls loved the interaction with the two dogs and mice Jennifer brought with her, and many said it was the highlight of the visit. “The Brownies would like to encourage the community to support this very worthy cause,” leader Lisa Luoni said. “Tinned or packets of petfood can be dropped into collection bins at many of our local supermarkets.”

Post-disaster preparedness CLOE WILLETTS Kapiti Lions has organised a Lions Long Walk Home event for November aimed at highlighting the need for commuters to become familiar with the potential 50km walk home from Wellington following a major disaster. With 45-plus kilometres from Wellington to the Kapiti Coast, project manager and Kapiti Lions member Andrew Laing said in the event of a disaster such as an earthquake, “recovery will be slow and people must be prepared to take care of themselves for several days or longer”. “Thousands would be marooned in the city, and the nightmare of no way home other than on foot must be at the back of the minds of many,” Laing said. “Some may already have heeded warnings and put their grab bags under desks with shoes, warm clothes, nibbles and water, but they must also wonder if they would be capable of completing such a long trek home.” The Lions Long Walk Home, set
for November 1 and 2, has been in the works for months, and will see 150 people endure the physical challenge and “highlight the issue of preparedness to a much wider audience”. “The walkers, who will need to pre-register, will be briefed at Wellington Railway Station before following SH1 via Ngauranga Gorge and ending day one at Ngatitoa Domain in Paremata,” he said. “The following morning will see them re-assemble at the domain and walk to Raumati South, via SH1 to Paekakariki, then through Queen Elizabeth Park or the beach to finish at the car park on the seaward side of the Marine Gardens, where there will be a welcome home barbecue.” Laing stressed the project is not a race, and is aimed primarily at Kapiti commuters, although Kapiti Lions will be accepting registrations for people in Johnsonville through to Plimmerton for Day One. “Those with recreational walking fitness levels would cover

each day in about five hours, but others may take as long as seven hours. “Local Lions clubs will be providing drink stations and other support in their areas.” Kapiti Lions has organised for each participant to receive a high visibility bib, “as a lot of the walk is beside SH 1 and there are one or two ‘tricky’ sections”. “Safety is paramount, and participants will be required to certify they have read the safety briefings and will adhere to them.” Each participant will also
receive a basic first aid kit, courtesy of ACC, and emergency services will be close by to assist if necessary. Entry forms provide full information regarding the route, controls, toilets and drink stations for the event, as well as personal safety and entrant requirements. Laing said he and two other Kapiti Lions members, each gold card holders and one with a double hip-replacement, have walked the total distance and identified the precise route, and the sections requiring extra care and
supervision, signage and road cones. “A dozen or so people have already registered, including Wellington mayor Celia WadeBrown,” Laing said. “We are organising the Lions Long Walk Home to generate the need for every commuter to think about their planning, test themselves, and be prepared.” Registration is $30, with any excess money going to the Wellington Free Ambulance. Registrations can be made online at www.kapitispoy.org.nz.

CONGRATULATIONS: Kapanui School did well at a Tournament of the Minds competition. PHOTO: KAP190914SPLSCHOOL
“ Thanks for all your support. I wil l keep working hard for you.”
A team from Kapanui School won a section of the Tournament of the Minds competition this month. Kapanui School had three seven-member teams in the tournament and one of their teams, Kapanui 2, featuring Kasia O’Meara, Kiera WeberSparrow, Connor Trupp, Kane Curnow, Jackson Kelly, Jack Everett-Brown and Nadja FigurAmbler, won their division in the applied technology section. They now get to compete in Melbourne against the winners from the Australian tournaments in the Australasian Pacific final on October 16. “This was a huge achievement as it was Kapanui’s first year entering the competition,” teacher Rochelle McKenzie said. “We were absolutely rapt with the result and were very proud of all of the Kapanui teams who worked really hard for the last six weeks on their long term challenges.” The students in the applied technology section were asked to come up with a useful wearable
device and students had to make an advertisement about the device and an oral presentation to perform for judges on the competition day. Kapanui 2 came up with a shopping band, a wearable device to make shopping easier. It can be worn on the wrist, it automatically scans items in the supermarket when they are picked up, removing the need for supermarket queues and it syncs with your fridge so that you are notified by the device when a product is running low. This year there were over 80 teams entered in the tournament held at Hutt Intermediate and the day was a hive of excitement and creative minds. Teams are required to solve demanding, open-ended challenges from one of the following disciplines: applied technology, language literature, maths engineering and social sciences. If anyone would like to help the students get to Melbourne please contact Rochelle McKenzie at Rochelle.mcivor@kapanui.school.nz.

COMMUNITY ARTWORK: Following a story in last week’s Kapiti News that highlighted a string of Spring-inspired works by renowned local artist Ken Hunt, the talented internationally-commissioned painter has seen the hanging of a giant prophecy piece at Paraparaumu’s Centre Church. While getting ready for next month’s Spring-focused gallery re-launch at Rona Gallery in Eastbourne, which has been changed from October 2, to Friday October 17, Hunt gifted the large visual narrative to the Hurley Road-based church, after also donating a similarly-themed painting to Mt Maunganui’s Face 2 Face church. New car eases burden
THANK YOU: Nikau Foundation trustee Liz Koh gives to keys to a brand new car to Lee Pownall, from the Cancer Society.
“We’re on this earth to be happy,” says Nikau Foundation trustee Liz Koh. “If you want a happiness fix, go and help someone instead of buying chocolate or shoes.” This, says Ms Koh, is backed up by wellknown ample research. She recently handed over to Lee Pownall of the Cancer Society the keys to a new car. Nikau provided a grant to Cancer Society Kapiti to buy the car, with support from HMC Kapiti. Now, $10,000 can be spent on cancer research and supporting those with cancer instead of four doors and an engine. Ms Koh says handing over the keys to the Cancer Society was an emotional experience. “You see both the need and the gratitude. “These people work so hard and it’s great to know that a grant like ours can make such a huge difference to what they can do in the community.” She says people like the staff at Cancer Society Kapiti and other not-for-profits are the treasures of our community. “The people that do that kind of work are really lovely, community-orientated people. “They probably give way more than most of us.” It’s the importance of giving that Ms Koh says is a key to creating a healthy and sustainable Kapiti community. Nikau Foundation’s other gift to Kapiti is the creation last year of a local district fund, the Kapiti Fund. Businesses and individuals can contribute to the fund and Nikau invests that money.

The interest earned over time goes back into the community by way of grants. Ms Koh is a proud parent of the Kapiti Fund. “I felt that Kapiti needed its own fund. “I work with local not-for-profit organisations and I see them really struggle. “They have to apply to Wellington and national organisations for funds. “Kapiti needs to support itself. “I think it’s important that communities learn to look after themselves, and make themselves sustainable. “Kapiti is a good size to be able to achieve this.” Nikau Foundation’s Kapiti Fund has a target of reaching five million dollars by 2020, and $20m in the next 10 years. “If we’d started twenty years ago, imagine where we’d be now. “We’d be making a substantial difference to our community because we worked together.” For now, not-for-profits like Cancer Society Kapiti are benefiting from Nikau Foundation grants. A Community Foundation for the Wellington region, Ms Koh says Nikau is part of the world’s fastest-growing movement in philanthropy. “It’s about everyone in a community creating a sustainable future. “And there’s only one way to do this — start now, and do it together. “If we can join together we can make wonderful things happen in our community. “There’s so much potential for Kapiti to get things right.”

Often, people wonder who am I? How do I fit into this world? This week, consumers of forensic mental health services at Porirua’s Te Korowai campus are answering those questions through a collection of art works, as part of a 2014 Mental Health Awareness Week exhibition. The exhibition, running from today until October 12, at Bottle Creek Gallery, a division of Pataka Art and Museum in Porirua, is titled Ko Wai Au: Who Am I, Where Do I Come From? How Do I Fit into this World? The exhibitors, part of Rangipapa and Purehuhu, and the Rangitahi youth service, have worked alongside campus art tutor and Raumati South artist Debbie Pointon to create a variety of visual art works, poetry and songs, which have helped them learn about themselves and teach others about who they are in a wider context. Tying in with this year’s

Mental Health Awareness theme Keeping Learning, the exhibition unearths consumers’ personal stories and perspectives, and represents who they are as individuals beneath their exterior as mental health
consumers. Reoccurring use of materials is found throughout the two forensic group projects, Identity Tree and Walking in My Shoes. Among the materials used is driftwood, which highlights
the significance of the beach for many of the exhibitors, who are often taken to the beach when given community leave to take their first walk, where they collect driftwood and shells. The eye-catching Walking in My Shoes project by Rangipapa residents symbolises the reality that no one can truly understand what another is experiencing until they have walked in their shoes, and depicts clients’ thoughts and feelings on handcrafted paper mache shoes. Created using different materials including tissue paper and newsprint, the shoes have words written across their surfaces, expressing and revealing the reflection of self, with some mothers having created smaller versions of shoes to give voice to their children. ■ Pataka Art and Museum is located on the coner of Norrie Street and Parumoana Street, Porirua City. Open Monday to Saturday 10am4.30pm, and Sunday 11am4.30pm.

Cherish the small joys in life THE LUNCHBOX Screening at Shoreline Cinema Waikanae One of Mumbai's miracles is the lunchbox delivery phenomenon. Mumbai's Dabbawallahs are a community of 5000 dabba (lunchbox) deliverymen. It is a hereditary profession. Every morning the Dabbawallahs deliver hot meals from the kitchens of housewives to the offices of their husbands, and then
return the empty lunchboxes back to the homes in the afternoon. For 120 years they have provided Mumbaikars with a taste of home in the office.
They navigate through the overcrowded local trains, and chaotic streets — that often have a namesake or more than one name. The Dabbawallahs are illiterate; they use a complex coding system of colours and symbols to deliver dabbas in the labyrinth that is Mumbai. Harvard University analyzed their delivery system, and concluded that just one in 4 million lunchboxes is ever delivered to the wrong address. ‘Dabba' is the story of that one lunchbox. A wrongly delivered lunchbox connects a housewife — Ila Vaid, to Saajan
Fernandes, a lonely man in the dusk of his life. Ila lives in Kandivili, the conservative middle class Hindu enclave. And Saajan lives in Ranwar village, Bandra, an old Christian neighbourhood that is threatened by the new high rises of Mumbai. Very soon Saajan will retire and bid goodbye to a Mumbai that crushed his dreams, took away his loved ones one by one, and turned his hair white. Just then Ila comes into his life. In the big city, that crushes dreams and recycles them everyday, both find a dream to hold on to.
They exchange notes in the lunchbox and create a fantasy life. As the lunchbox goes back and forth, this fantasy becomes so elaborate that it threatens to overwhelm their reality. The characters of The Lunchbox exist on the line between the Mumbai of reality and the Mumbai of fantasy. In the end, they come to a crossroads where they must choose between the two worlds. The Lunchbox is the story of nostalgia and of hope for the future, and above all, of the small joys of life that need our attention. — by Ritesh Batra

Freshwater fishing season is just around the corner, and Kapiti Fly Fishing Club is wecolming new members to jump into the Waikanae River fly fishing season, which sets off on October 1. With more than 50 members aged 11 to 80-plus, the Kapiti Fly Fishing Club meets at the Otaihanga Boating Club from 7.30pm on the third Monday of every month. One of the club’s youngest members Morgan Sheffield, 11, said fly fishing is “quiet and peaceful, and the river is always a nice place to be”. First attracted to fly fishing at seven after watching people fish the Tongariro, Morgan said he taught himself to catch trout by “watching people in the river and being given good tips”.
Now making his own flies and catching trout, a recent trip to the Tauranga-Taupo River saw Morgan catch 12 trout, out-fishing many experienced and older fishermen. The upcoming Wellington region freshwater fishing season, which runs until April 30, next year, will be the first year Morgan has fished for trout at Kapiti’s Waikanae River. Licences are available from fishing shops, and through Fish and Game New Zealand at www.fishandgame.org.nz. ■ For more details on the Kapiti Fly Fishing Club visit www.kapitiflyfishing.org.nz, or contact club secretary Craig Gutry on 902 2078 or 021 190 0248. ARTHRITIS APPEAL WEEK When the doctor first tells you that you have arthritis, the reaction is often one of surprise — after all, you may not be old. More than half a million New Zealanders will be affected by arthritis at some time in their life, however, it is not an inevitable part of growing older. In fact, there are over 1000 children and young people under the age of 20
affected in New Zealand. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis. It is one of the single greatest causes of disability in New Zealand. Over 25,000 New Zealanders will not be able to work this year due to their arthritis. Although it is a serious health condition with no known cure, you can do a lot to make coping with arthritis easier.
The website www.arthritis.org.nz is a good source of information and arthritis educators are always available for advice on 0800 663 463. Keeping joints moving helps to increase mobility, relieve pain and strengthen leg muscles to protect and support your knees and hips. ■ Arthritis Appeal Week is on now. To donate, call 0900 333 20.

Plays examine school issues Rehearsals have been in full swing for the Paraparaumu College productions of Sticks and Stones and Time Out, plays by Sue Murray which take place at the Paraparaumu College auditorium at 7.30pm tonight and tomorrow. Sticks and Stones is a production by the Year 11 drama class which examines the harmful and disruptive effect that gossiping can have in a high school setting. It looks at the struggles of bullying, disabilities, home life and identity issues. Time Out looks at life in a busy world and the day to day lives of
students at Paraparaumu College. It explores the fast pace and stresses of family and school life and what students and family come up against every day and what happens when they eventually slow down. “The students have been great at the rehearsals,” said Erica Newlands, director and drama teacher. “With more than 60 students involved in both the productions, we are looking forward to a great evening of entertainment.” ■ Tickets are $5 at the door.

JEWEL IN THE CROWN – BREATHTAKING VIEWS
At last, after 50 years, here is an iconic beach front home in an unbelievable location that offers possibly the best views on the Kapiti Coast. Opportunities of this calibre seldom come to the market. Architecturally designed in the 60s by Wellington Architect Robert Fantl with later additions, the property has an incredible position, offering spectacular, unimpeded coastal & ocean views to Kapiti Island & beyond. Experience the wonderful ambience of this iconic 60s bach which retains many original features & now offers a peaceful blend of tradition & simplicity with modern comforts & seamless indoor/outdoor flow out to gardens & onto beach. A very special place to relax & unwind. Tenders Close 4pm Friday 31st October 2014 (the vendor reserves the right to sell prior)

Designed by Peter Davis & built in 2000 by Carl Van Der Meer & his team, this is a rare & unique offering for todays busy modern family. Situated amongst the towering Norfolk pines within a quiet cul de sac just minutes walk from the Links golf course & the main beach precinct, this is a home that offers both form & function. I suspect the Designers brief was to create an elegant home with generous living spaces for both adults & children, high quality service areas, a big welcoming entry hall, & a sweeping feature staircase. At around 267m² the lower interior offers a large family friendly granite kitchen as its centrepiece, a relaxed family/dining room with gas fire, a separate West facing formal lounge, master brm ensuite plus 2nd brm, & access into the double garaging. From the homes main entry hall a beautiful curved staircase leads upstairs to a generous 3rd brm with its own private lounge & wc, making it ideal for both teenagers, guests or the option of running a homestay. If it's the perfect home in the perfect location you are after, may we suggest you've found it. Welcome Home.

Overcoming learning difficulties Bernie Randall writes about the great work volunteers are doing in helping students with reading, writing and mathematics If you believe the basis of a good education is reading, writing and arithmetic then you might be surprised to learn that there are some students who find this a difficult goal to obtain because of learning difficulties. This is where teachers and volunteers from the Kapiti community, including a number of retired people, are actively lending a helping hand to provide pupils with support. Young people with learning disabilities face particular challenges and difficulties with education and employment. While it may be possible for them to work and live independently, they sometimes take longer to learn new skills and need support in doing so. Paraparaumu and Kapiti Colleges do a huge amount of work in helping young people to prepare for the next steps in their lives. One of these ways is to facilitate help from the volunteers in the community who act as reader/writers during the stressful examination period. Both colleges allow pupils with
HELPING OUT: Reader/writer Lindsay Mathison with Paraparaumu College student Ane Vermaak. PHOTO: JACK PENMAN / KAP120914SPLREADER
learning difficulties to have questions read out to them and in some cases the answers the pupils supply written down on their behalf. A reader/writer may read the test questions and instructions to students but the guidelines are quite clear that it does not include giving explanations or definitions of words. Where required the helper writes the answer exactly as given by the student. A student who struggles with reading but has good listening skills can benefit from a reader. It can increase a child’s self-confidence and
sense of independence and can experience success in exams while living with a learning difficulty. Students with learning disabilities are fortunate that the Ministry of Education recognise their strengths and allow them to work around their learning difficulties. It is not so long ago that the Ministry of Education failed to give recognition to students with dyslexia and other learning difficulties. But once endorsed by the ministry it was enthusiastically adopted by the colleges who quickly identified such students and provided
them with effective intervention based on their specific needs. Although no one can agree on a precise definition of dyslexia the term covers a range of persistent reading and writing difficulties. Symptoms can include reversing the order of letters in a word or mixing up words in a sentence. The students appreciate the willingness to help by seniors and other people in the community. A successful reader/writer partnership can allow a dyslexic student to perform close to their realised potential. Schools generally
can’t afford to pay for reader/ writers so the volunteers who act as reader/writers provide valuable support to a child and improve that student’s chance of gaining equality of education opportunity. Many of them are retired but are willing to give up their time to help the local colleges to give the students the confidence in the exams they deserve. The concept of writers is not new. The Chinese mandarins used to copy the students exam answers before giving them to the emperor so the students writing was not recognised and avoided any display of favouritism. Students with dyslexia, although intelligent, find the three basic education subjects reading, writing and arithmetic difficult and need a helping hand. Jane a pupil from one of the colleges quotes from a Shania Twain song to her reader/writers and teachers, “You’ve got a way with me somehow you got me to believe in everything that I could be. You gave me faith to find my dreams.” It is hard for most of us to understand that there are young students who are confused by some words that most of us take for granted. Great work that the seniors in the community volunteer to become readers and writers for able students with special learning needs. The work they undertake as a reader/writer is extremely valuable and makes a difference to the individual’s future and self-esteem.

Local legends Peter Averi, organ, and Ellen Barrett, contralto, will share the platform with renowned organist Ken Dougall, cellist Clare Barrett, John Sargent playing piano and bass, and Stuart Grant on piano. Roger Wiig will compere the performance, held at the parish’s Raumati church. Classical organ music will
be the centrepiece of the afternoon’s performance, and therein lies another anniversary: Peter Averi will play the organ he helped the church select back in 1994. “Not so long ago really”, says Peter, whose musical career spans six decades. “You could say I’m coming out of retirement for this performance, but then I’ve never really retired. “Music is my life and it always will be”. Peter says the programme will be a “mixed bag”, with something for everyone. Music and songs, selected by
the performers themselves, range from Handel’s haunting aria Ombra Mai Fu to excerpts from Saint-Saens’ whimsical yet moving The Carnival of the Animals, from Mendelssohn’s delicate Songs Without Words to Charles-Marie Widor’s stirring Toccata. Ellen will sing folk songs from Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland, too. Recital co-organisers Brian Gray and Bruce Johnston report strong interest, and the last ticket has now been sold. Unfortunately, they say, many will miss what promises to be a memorable occasion.

Doesn’t spring give you a feeling of a fresh start?
The days become longer, the available gardening hours increase and everything bursts into new leaf and flower that make the colours brighter. It’s a happy time for gardeners who have spent the winter planning their dream outdoor spaces. The most interesting gardens are a mix of edible and ornamentals so plant accordingly for both to get their show. Edibles require the better part of 6 hours sun each day - those that wilt in too much light can easily be planted to tuck behind others - but plan your vege plot to be in the sunniest summer position.
It’s time to plant your hanging baskets

Hanging baskets and flowering pots make a warm welcome to your patio, deck or outside living space. Haul them out now and give them a good clean, then plant your favourites such as petunias, calibrachoa, strawberries, gazanias and fuchsia for maximum wow factor this summer. Geraniums both zonal and ivy are sure summer favourites and Tropical Impatiens potted up now will be a real show by Christmas.
With the weather getting warmer so does the soil which means you can start planting out your spring kitchen garden if you live in a frost free area. Plant radishes, beetroot, broccoli, carrot, lettuce, parsnip and pea seeds as well as seedlings of globe artichoke, silverbeet, onion, lettuce, leeks and cabbage. Protect young plants from heavy spring rain and strong winds with a cloche or shade cloth, lifting on warm sunny days for maximum growth. Renew slug bait after heavy rain, and spray or water with a foliar seaweed spray to build plant health.

We congratulate the Waikanae Baptist apti Church on the new auditorium KAPITI - 04 296 1727 WELLINGTON - 04 568 2323
A 10 year dream is finally reality for Waikanae Baptist Church, with the recent completion of extensions to its building Senior Pastor Nigel Scott said after a gradual planning process, construction began in January this year, seeing the addition of a new auditorium, entrance foyer and office block. He said car parking has also been improved, with additional spaces and resealing. Mr Scott said the church is working to further their position as an integral part of the local community, with “our building now used for church-related activities and programs” as well as usual Sunday services.
We also have a number of community groups using it every week, and these extensions have opened up the possibility for further community use,” he said. “Our aim is to be like a well in this community. “In ancient times, a well was a focal point for the whole community. Not only did people go there to draw essential water, they went there to do life together. “Likewise, we want people to come here to do life together, as well as have the opportunity to draw the living water found in Jesus Christ.

MURAL BRIGHTENS UP COLLEGE
MITRE 10 LADIES NIGHT
COLOURFUL: The mural is inspired by the paintings of New Zealand artist Nicky Forman, who is a regionalist painter basing her work closely around her immediate environment and constructing her paintings in a grid format. Paraparaumu College students Emily Flowers, Year 12, and Sam Wildblood, Year 13, researched the Kapiti area for subject material and then composed their own ideas for a mural. Emily’s design was chosen for the final work, and both students then worked on separate areas. They both gained level two credits for their efforts in creating an effective art work that is relevant to this area. The completed mural has been installed in a prominent, well-used area of the college chosen by them. PHOTO: KAP120914SPLCOLOUR
GOOD CAUSE: Mitre 10 Mega Kapiti held its fourth annual Ladies Night on August 13. Over 400 women attended and took part in a variety of activities. Entry was a gold coin donation and all proceeds went to Kapiti Youth Support (KYS).Picture from left, KYS manager Raechel Osborne, Kapiti Rotary Club manager Liz Koh, KYS youth coach Charlotte Lane-Tobin, KYS nurse Jordyn Long and Mitre 10 Mega Kapiti owner Vince Indo. Society has used Memorials in varying ways to honour life since time began. With about 80% cremation in this region, many people simply plan to scatter the ashes after cremation, but in the end most need a place to go, a special place to remember, and usually end up putting up a permanent memorial of some sort. Over 20 years ago the cremation wall at Paraparaumu Beach cemetery ran out of room and it was decided to place memorial plaques around an existing rose garden.
This idea caught on so quickly that within only a few months the garden plaques were full and a new garden was needed. All the cemeteries in the district now have gardens with plaques for people to either place the ashes or simply have a special place to come to.

Explosion rocks area
A very loud explosion at Paraparaumu Beach north on Friday were flares being blown up. New Zealand Defence Force said an explosive ordnance disposal team “disposed of three unserviceable KC25 marine marker rescue flares belonging to the coastguard, at the request of the police”. It said “A high explosive charge was used to consume the items and negate the associated risks”. “The flares were considered not safe to store, and moving them was not recommended.” There had been similar detonations in the area in the past. “This is the preferred, and safest option for dealing with these items. “The task was carried out at the request of, and was managed by the police.” Rob Jones, who lives at Paraparaumu Beach north, said the explosion shook the family house. “We didn't have a clue what was going on. “It would have been a great idea if they had warned the neighbourhood.” On the Kapiti News Facebook site, Barbara Bailey said she was lifting a heavy items on to a trailer when the explosion happened. “Nearly dropped it,” she said. Stacey Prince was teaching at Kapiti Learn to Swim. “It was loud,” she said. Craig Edkins said “It sounded like someone hitting the side of our shed.”
Invoices on their way Ratepayers in Otaki and most of Waikanae will be sent their first water invoices in the last week of September. The district has been divided into three areas for water meter reading and invoicing. Initial invoices will not cover a full three-month period while we establish quarterly reading/invoicing cycles for each area. Subsequent invoices will cover three-monthly periods. A slight delay in posting invoices for Otaki and most of Waikanae was due to extra processing checks completed. Posting of invoices for the two other areas of the district remains on schedule, as follows: ■ the rest of Waikanae and Paraparaumu — early October (invoices will cover slightly less than a full quarter) ■ Raumati and Paekakariki — early November (invoices will cover slightly more than a full quarter). The same payment options for general rates are available for water rates. These are listed on the back of your water invoice (remember to include your water account number in any payment details). If your water invoices are higher than you expect, there are plenty of easy, no-cost things you can do to save water at www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/waterconservation General rates invoices are not posted at the same time as water invoices and you will receive them separately.
Car impounded A 19-year-old man caught doing a burnout on Paraparaumu Beach in a Subaru WRX had his car impounded. Constable Jim Dunlop, from the Wellington road policing group, said about 50 to 60 boy racers, who had come from Wellington, congregated on the beach near the Kapiti Boating Club on Sunday about 4pm. “It had been reported that several cars were doing burnouts on the beach. “By the time I got there the majority had stopped but there was one guy, about 50m to 100m away from the main pack, doing donuts. “When I stopped him and advised him it was illegal, he was quite surprised, to find it was illegal, because as I informed him, the beach is still classified as a road. “It was also quite dangerous as there were a lot of people walking on the beach.” The man’s car was impounded for 28 days and he was to appear in the Porirua District Court.

Youth group makes a difference Youth Quest. Who are they? They are a mentoring programme that works with passion to help young Kapiti boys get on the right track and stay there. “Eighty per cent of our funding comes from private sources so we are constantly working with groups and individuals to raise the cash we need to keep doing the work we do,” says Terry Poko. “We are extremely grateful that Web Genius chose our organisation to give back to the Kapiti community. “All sponsorship that will come from Kapiti Run for Youth will be ploughed in to our two key programmes, operations and mentoring.” The operations programme includes a bush camp phase followed by a classroom phase, dealing with issues like managing stress and anger, drug and addiction management, personal presentation and communication, leadership and team building, work experience and a graduation ceremony. “The programme runs for six weeks and is followed by 12 months of mentoring. “The mentoring programme allocates a mentor to each boy who walks alongside them, raises their life aspirations and helps them access the services required to achieve these aspirations.” Both Terry and Darcy Hata have their hearts and minds in the right places so if you see them around, say “hi” as they are doing real stuff to help our young boys be great men in our community for the future. Their work is hard and often

STUDENTS SUPPORT DAFFODIL DAY A number of Kapiti College students have volunteered their time to collect donations to support the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day. Daffodil Day is a time to reflect, and remember all those that have been taken by cancer. The school’s Year 12 Council came up with the idea, and with help from head student team member Christey Blythen, they were able to help the Cancer Society, in the best way they knew how. “It was more than just wanting to help that drove the students to spend four hours outside various businesses in Raumati Beach shops, it was also the sense of community that incentivised the students,” Christey said. “The students have all been affected one way or another by cancer, with some fellow students being affected by the cruel disease. “All students have been incredibly supportive, with sell-out bake sales helping to raise funds for the affected

Local club punches above weight Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club general manager Leo Barber got to ply his trade at the PGA Tour’s prestigious Barclays Golf Championship at Ridgwood Country Club in New Jersey recently. Accompanied by greenkeeper Brett Smith, Barber accepted an invitation to volunteer for the event that featured all of the world’s top golfers, including world number one Rory McIlroy. “Basically, the superintendent of the course has played Paraparaumu Beach and just loves coming here,” Barber said. “After his second visit, he told me to ‘Get yourself to New Jersey, cut some greens for me and we’ll look after you and have some fun’.” The tournament featured a staggering 115 green’s staff with Barber and Smith working on the prized 18th hole. “In my role as general manager at Paraparaumu Beach, I still relish the opportunity to get on the tools, so it was a great moment to be pushing a handmower in preparation for such a big occasion. “As someone whose passion is working the land, it was a dream come true.” Barber and Smith were invited to walk inside the ropes during a practice round with former US Masters Champion

CLOE WILLETTS The Waikanae Gymnastic Club welcomed in 30 years on the coast last month. What began as small first-time classes in August 1984 has developed into thousands of Waikanae children venturing through its doors, with some of the club’s original members now taking their children to the volunteer-run club. With eight life members , including Karen Fitzgerald who was named a new life member at August 24’s anniversary celebration, the club has seen about 120 years of collective voluntary coaching from its dedicated life members. Coach and life member Kay Brown said the club is proud to have been represented by competitive gymnasts in the past, at both regional and national events. Brown said another standout for the club was last year’s hosting of a student from the Ollerup Physical Education
such a purse attracts the very best players in the world. “The most important thing to take away from working at such an incredible event, at such an impressive golf course, is that Paraparaumu Beach punches well above its weight in terms of what we achieve with our budgets. “To put it in perspective, they spent more on chemicals in the week leading up to the tournament than we would do in two years,” Barber said. Sacrificing personal leave to gain such invaluable experience was an easy sacrifice for Barber. “Learning new skills is so important, and one of the things that I was very impressed with is how the US courses are made to be excellent from the moment you drive through the gates until the moment you leave. “The facilities, the course itself, the service — it is all done so brilliantly,” Barber said. Having returned home and back to the comfort of the famed links, Barber believes the course at Paraparaumu Beach is close to being at its best. “We were fortunate enough to play world number two ranked Cypress Point course and US Open venue Winged Foot. “I’m not being biased when I say that our greens are better.”

Otaki College’s Senior A Netball was unbeaten at the Lower North Island Secondary Schools Tournament in Hastings recently. Winning the overall B Grade competition, the girls had an incredible week that ended their netball season on a high. “This was a huge feat for our Senior A team, as the majority of the girls have played together for four years now and worked their way up in the competition to get stronger each year,” head of physical education and health
Marcia Ohlson said. “The final against Tawa College was very exciting, with Otaki College making a strong start and holding the lead the entire game.” Team captain Alana Fraser and team member Karapapa Hika were also named in the B Grade Tournament team. Fraser said: “It was such a great experience. I’m so proud of our team and honoured to play with such highly skilled players”. The team wanted to thank Coach Monica Fraser and manager Karen Hika for their dedication over the season.
Medal haul for Raumati at national meet A week of national swimming events has brought 10 national medals for the Raumati Swimming Club. At the New Zealand short course championships, the club won four national medals including a gold to Rebecca Moynihan, 16, in the women’s 50 free. Rebecca followed this up with a bronze in the 100 free. Other medalists included Ballad Woodley-Hanan, 16, with a bronze in the 50 breast and Nic Cecioni, 14, continuing his
strong season with a bronze in the 50 back. Not since 2007 has the club produced three individual medal winners at one national meet. The three swimmers also finished collectively in over 14 finals. The weekend before, Moynihan, Cecioni and Woodley-Hanan began their medal swoop at the New Zealand secondary school champs, Moynihan (Waipahu College Levin) winning gold in
the 50 free and silver in the 100 free, 16 and over; Cecioni (Kapiti College) gold in the 200 back and silver in the 100 back in 14 years category; and Woodley-Hanan (Kapiti College) winning two bronze in the 50 and 100 breast 16 and over category. Both Rebecca Moynihan and Ballad Woodley-Hanan have been selected for the Swimming New Zealand High performance development camp to be held in Rotorua in October.
Other members of the sixswimmer team were Chrystel Neilsen, Tawhiti Temomo and Bella Biggs, who coach Jon Winter said also stepped up and performed well in the top 20 swims in their age groups.

Rivalry strong as ever Paraparaumu College senior boys basketball team maintained its unbeaten run against Kapiti College in the annual Angelo Robinson Cup match. Hosted by Kapiti College, not a spare seat was available as supporters filled the gym. Kapiti got off to a great start but was pegged back by Paraparaumu who led at the end of the first quarter by four points. In the second quarter the teams traded buckets and Paraparaumu led by five points at half time. Paraparaumu had a strong third quarter and had kicked out to a 10-point lead. But Kapiti showing great fight spirit, pegging back the lead, however Paraparaumu ran out winners by five points in an extremely exciting and high quality game. This is the fifth year the teams have played for the cup and the rivalry is as strong as any other between the two colleges. At the presentation of the cup, Angelo Robinson applauded the huge array of talent on display in

Twenty-eight players were involved and after four rounds of randomly drawn games, were divided into trophy, plate, bowl and consolante pools and a series of knockout rounds took place. The winner was
Kevin McFadgen over Brian Frampton in a closely fought final, winning by the closest of margins, 13 -12.

MEDALS FOR TAEKWONDO CLUB The Otaki Taekwondo Club enjoyed success at the recent NZUTA Bay Open Taekwondo Championships held in Tauranga on August 31. Having put in extra training over the past month under the tutelage of blackbelt master Jim Babbington and Paula Teau, the hard work showed results with all four fighters coming away with medals. In the cadet U55kg division Tiapo Kapukai Taumaa displayed slick skills to take out the gold medal, winning his final 2-0. Pounamu MacKay, following up from her win at last month’s Hutt City Open, also won gold in the minor U38kg category. Competing in the minor U36kg division, national champion Kaahurere MacKay dominated his final by 16-4 to claim the team’s third gold medal. Rounding out a successful day, Trent Thompson fought hard in the minor U39kg division to claim a bronze medal.

The recent success has been no fluke with the expert teachings of master Babbington and assistant instructor Paula Teau. Trainings are held at Otaki College hall every Monday and Wednesday. Contact Paula Teau 02102780389 after 5.30pm Tuesday and Thursdays for more information.
AMBULANCE SERVICE BENEFITS Forty-two petanque players from Kapiti, Horowhenua, Upper Hutt and the Manawatu gathered at the Kapiti Petanque Club in the Paraparaumu Domain to play a 3-ball triples melee to raise funds for the Wellington Free Ambulance Charity recently. Following a night of heavy rain, many of the pistes were under water, but with a relaxing of the rules, the competition went ahead. Fortunately, the weather improved as the day progressed and the full five games were able to
be completed. Once the games were completed and the scores totalled, two players had five wins, and Shirley Peard of the Horowhenua Club beat Annick Le Guen of Kapiti on points differential. The club raised $250 for the Wellington Free ambulance and Lance Anderson was on hand to receive the cheque. Annick also donated her prize money and Brett Maguire donated his winnings from a treasure hunt competition.
