Otaki factory on track to create jobs DAVID HAXTON A large number of jobs are expected to be created once an eco-friendly tyre recycling factory in Otaki is operational. Entyre New Zealand hopes to have the factory finished by Christmas and the staffing levels boosted from 16 to about 50 soon after. “New sustainable long-term jobs,” managing director Reiner Wenzel said. Over recent months, a site on the corner of Riverbank Rd and Miro St has been cleaned up and the work to create the factory has steadily progressed. Creating the business is a significant investment with a multi-million dollar budget. Once old tyres are shredded, the rubber is turned into a fine material and then a special
process re-engineers it so it can be made into various products, from cow mattresses to grips, handles, brake pads and tubes. The steel from the tyres can be sold and the fibre from the tyres used for polymer in clothing. Overseeing everything is Mr Wenzel, who has been involved in the tyre recycling industry since 1989. “They call me the grandfather of the tyre recycling industry.” He says there are various tyre recycling plants in Europe, Asia and the United States. “This isn’t a trial — we know what we’re doing.” The company has also teamed up with Riverbank Engineering to create a trailermounted mobile tyre cutting machine.
The Ministry for the Environment gave $27,255 towards the development of the project from its waste minimisation fund, which was approved by Kapiti Coast District Council’s grant allocation subcommittee. Mr Wenzel said a mobile tyre cutting machine made economic sense, especially when sourcing tyres further afield. Shredding a tyre on-site could reduce its volume by 75 per cent. “We developed this machine through sheer necessity. “There’s no such thing anywhere in the world.” The trailer has been created, but there’s a bit of computer programming to do on it and issues around the machine’s cost have to be resolved between both parties.
Cr K Gurunathan, in a letter to the ministry, says the mobile tyre cutter was described as a prototype, so it should have been processed via a category-A new technology funding criteria, not category-B, which was for businesses using proven technology. The subcommittee wasn’t given enough time to study a set of financial papers, no application was attached with the application showing details of the company and its shareholding, and he had repeatedly asked for councillors to see the machine in action to test its viability, but that hadn’t happened. “I believe an audit is necessary to ensure that our grant process is more robust and monies, which could have gone to more worthwhile ventures, are not wasted.”

Thieves misguided CLOE WILLETTS The Paraparaumu Girl Guide hall has been broken into resulting in the disappearance of two three-person tents, four gas burners and 10 crates of Girl Guide fundraising biscuits. Treasurer Liz Johnson said the theft was believed to have occurred sometime between September 9 and 16. During the break-in a roller door of the Te Kupe Rd-based guiding hall was jemmied open, before the offenders removed items on a hand trolley. “We have regional camp coming up

on Labour Weekend, so will need to find tents to use,” Mrs Johnson said. “We’ve also lost the money the girls would’ve raised from selling the biscuits, which would’ve gone straight to paying for their activities.” They also have to pay for repairs to the hall. Mrs Johnson said it is a lot of money the organisation just doesn’t have. ■ Anyone with information surrounding the event or stolen items is advised to contact police or Girl Guide district commissioner Kirsty Lennon at paraparaumudc@gmail.com.

From October 1 the collection of wheelie bins, recycling crates and rubbish bags around the district will start at 7am, rather than 7.30am. Licensed waste collectors have requested the earlier time to ensure all households are serviced on their usual collection day – not the day after. Residents can still put bins, crates and bags out the night before their collection day (take care that rubbish and recycling is packed firmly, so loose items don’t blow out onto the road or footpath).

PARK PLAN
Paekakariki residents group Grow Paekakariki is asking council to action purchase of a new park in the Tilley Rd triangle. Group spokesman Paul Hughes said this park need was initially identified last year in the Grow Paekakariki report that was prepared by the Paekakariki community and endorsed at a public meeting. The report was then endorsed by the Paekakariki Community Board in April 2013 and then unanimously accepted by the Environment and Community Development Committee in September 2013 with council staff asked to report back on the opportunities and obtain a first right of refusal for this land. The report identified two areas of land that should be purchased as reserve by council for the Paekakariki community Paekakariki scarp, and the Tilley Rd triangle. The specific purchase case for the Paekakariki scarp has already been tabled with council for consideration with the full support of the community Board, to protect biodiversity, heritage, and some amenity values. “This is the only opportunity we will have to grow our social amenities within the core of the village for future Paekakariki generation.”

School’s garden comes back to life after fire CLOE WILLETTS Paraparaumu School’s garden was almost in shape in preparation for the school’s 125th anniversary reunion this November, but now sits as wasteland following last month’s arson. Despite the top 15cm of soil having to be removed because of asbestos in the building, Paraparaumu School is well into the planning stages of a new, bigger and better garden. Thanks to the support and sponsorship of parents and local businesses, children will see the development of a specialist dual-purpose garden, which will boast a collection of fresh vegetables, and a built-in activity obstacle. As the first dual-purpose school garden in the Wellington region, Paraparaumu School children will be able to “have fun while getting hands-on in the garden”, according to project mastermind and Paraparaumu School parent Shelley Harris. Mrs Harris, along with parent Rachel Rogers, will begin the garden refurbishment this week, and plan to “make the best of a bad situation”. With all the garden’s sculptures having melted during the fire, the pair
has been spending “every spare minute planning the new garden”. Mrs Harris said prior to the fire, the school had been dedicated to sustainable gardening. Among their sustainability initiatives was a swapping scheme, designed to enable all families to have access to fresh vegetables, which invited them to swap items such as home baking for vegetables. Starting from scratch to re-establish the community-based project, Mrs Harris said it is the school’s way of “giving back to the community”. “We’re really grateful for everyone’s help in coming together to help with not just the garden, but the school.” Thanks to the help of Paranui Organics, located north of Foxton, Paraparaumu School will receive a donated truckload of premium mix compost. Kapiti Pak‘nSave has also organised support, including the donation of seedlings from Awapuni Nurseries. Store floral manager Suzanne Downes, also an ex-Paraparaumu School parent and board of trustees member, has helped source a collection of items alongside Kapiti Coast District Council’s new green gardener Hannah Zwartz, which includes

“I’ve been so impressed by the amount of people rallying in to help out. “It touches the heart of everybody, really, whether you’re connected to the school or not.”
Appeal over Basin Bridge plan welcomed Kapiti mayor Ross Church has applauded the decision of New Zealand Transport Agency to appeal the Board of Inquiry’s rejection of the Basin Bridge application. The Transport Agency has lodged an appeal to the High Court on some points of law to provide direction for the future planning of transport infrastructure around Wellington’s Basin Reserve and
throughout New Zealand. Mr Church says the new MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway will be much more effective if there is continuous traffic flow from Kapiti. “An efficient highway which allows traffic to flow unimpeded from Kapiti through Wellington city to key facilities such as the airport is really important, and this can’t be achieved at the Wellington end if there is
congestion around the Basin Reserve. “It’s crazy spending over a billion dollars on a road of national significance from the airport to Levin and not solve the worst bottleneck in the city, when there’s no viable alternative. “This is about looking at the whole region and the obvious economic spin-offs of eliminating all the bottlenecks, not just shifting them further down the
line,” Mr Church says. Porirua mayor Nick Leggett said the Basin Bridge project had many benefits for the wider region. “This is about an efficient economic highway that separates local and regional traffic between Wellington airport and the Manawatu/Rangitikei, which, in reality, is a conduit for prosperity for the lower North Island. “Easy access to Wellington
Airport and hospital is vital to Porirua residents, not to mention those on the Kapiti Coast and the Hutt Valley.” He said a key concern was also the stymieing of projects that flow on from the Basin Bridge decision, such as better pedestrian/cycleway access, improved public transport systems and the double tunneling of Mt Victoria, which is at capacity.

Expressway bridge work starts DAVID HAXTON Construction of the Mazengarb Rd bridge, which is part of the MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway, is underway. The area has been cleared of vegetation and heavy machinery is prepping the site to create the single span, split carriageway 24.2m long bridge. Nearby three houses at the end of Chilton Drive have had to be removed as part of the expressway project. One of the homes, a huge two storey house, pictured, was removed on Sunday by Alpha Specialised Movers, and relocated about 1.5km away on a section opposite the Jolly Pub. The house was designed by Rob Kofoed and built in 1988 for Warren and Vicki Timpson. It comprised five bedrooms, an octagonal designed kitchen, a dining room, lounge and more. “The design was to last a lifetime,” Ms Timpson said. The Timpsons’ sold the house to builder Carl van der Meer’s parents. Lately it had been owned by John and Julianne O’Kane.
Ironically Mr van der Meer is establishing the house on its new site. MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway Alliance manager Alan Orange said the houses were moved “so we can start preparing the ground for the new expressway bridge, to move phone, power, electricity services and to make room for the temporary road diversion that will need to be place before we start lowering Mazengarb Rd to pass under the new expressway bridge. In terms of mitigation, noise bunds are already in place and additional noise fencing will go up soon. “There is also a large amount of planting that will begin in the next planting season.” Mr Orange said the expressway is “coming along by leaps and bounds, and I couldn’t be happier with our progress”. “We’re on time and ready to really ramp it up for the summer construction season. “People will really be able to see major progress in our bridges, particularly the ones at Kapiti Rd, Mazengarb Rd, Otaihanga Rd and Waikanae River.”

APN NZ rebrands as NZME. Businesses formerly known as APN NZ, TRN and GrabOne are unifying their print, radio, digital and e-commerce brands under one new, overarching brand, NZME. The re-launch is the next major step in NZME. fully realising the power of its content, audience and e-commerce capabilities and is designed to maximise the New Zealand Group’s combined asset potential. NZME. or ‘N-Zed me’ stands for New Zealand Media and Entertainment. “Our combined assets have exceptional reach in the New Zealand market with 2.9 million people connecting with our brands every week,” says chief executive Jane Hastings. “As NZME. we will be able to leverage that advantage to more effectively connect advertisers

“This will bring all of our platforms together to clearly establish us as the preferred news, sport and entertainment destination for New Zealanders.” Of the rationale behind the new name, Hastings says the ‘me’ in NZME. perfectly reflects that NZME.’s brands and people are always at the centre of what’s going on. “NZME. also recognises that New Zealanders want a New Zealand perspective. “They want to be connected to the content they want, the way they want it and when they want it. “That’s what we give them.” She points to the integration of the New Zealand businesses being an important part of the new business strategy, which focuses on fully realising the power of

Volunteers discuss link with cancer CLOE WILLETTS Three young CanTeen members were among a group of people collecting donations for the charity’s Annual Appeal month at Coastlands last Thursday, and each with their own personal connections to cancer. Helping to fuel funds for New Zealand’s not-for-profit peer support network, the Annual Appeal is one of Canteen’s various money raising methods, to continue helping young people aged between 13 and 24 living with cancer, as well as their siblings and bereaved siblings. CanTeen youth worker Renee Weijers, 27, said CanTeen emerged 25 years ago as a method for ensuring “young people don’t have to feel alone when facing cancer”. “Through CanTeen young people can talk with other young people who are going through the same experience,” said Wellington-based Miss Weijers. “It’s cool to have a space where
you can get together and just hang out, and be with other young people who get it.” Having chosen a CanTeen career because of her desire to work closely with young people, Miss Weijers said the element of her role she most enjoys is “hanging out with the young people and being a part of their journey”. Andrew Young, 19, is one of the many CanTeen members Miss Weijers has worked with, as a bereaved sibling who lost his sister to Ewing Sarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer, in April this year. Following his sister Hayley’s cancer diagnosis, which she was cleared of on her 22nd birthday, Mr Young enjoyed a celebration party with his sister and CanTeen, who had organised an icecream cake. Three months later, upon a visit to hospital, Mr Young and his family found out the tumor had spread to Hayley’s lungs, and she was given just over a year to live.

Prior to passing just three months after her last diagnosis, CanTeen gave the Lower Hutt local opportunities to complete items on a last minute bucket list, which included skiing at Auckland’s Snow Planet, and attending charity camps. “We also provided her with support at the hospital, including bringing her in her favourite food
because the hospital food’s not that great, as well as bits and pieces to make her a little more comfortable,” Miss Weijers said. Also getting hands-on in Canteen’s fundraising efforts last week was the Kapiti Coast’s Steven Szytkiel, 22, a former patient member. After fighting a hard cancer battle in 2012, which he won, Mr
Szytkiel became a CanTeen volunteer to “help out and raise awareness so more people can get help too”. “I definitely wouldn’t have got through it, if it wasn’t for the support I had from family and CanTeen,” he said. “They included me when I just wanted to sit in my room and do nothing. “I’m really glad I got the help I did.”
Trenchmate calls coast home CLOE WILLETTS The coast has come out on top as the location hot spot for a successful Aucklandbased business, which launched its new Wellington branch in Paraparaumu recently. Selecting Kapiti over sites in Porirua, the Hutt Valley and Wellington, trench shoring business Trenchmate chose Paraparaumu’s Sheffield St as its setting, with two of the region’s biggest-ever development projects in mind. “As a company, we wanted to focus on the new MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway
roading project and upcoming Transmission Gully,” said Trenchmate spokesman Mike Drummond, who also mentioned the coast’s close proximity to Wellington city. “There didn’t seem to be anyone down in Wellington specialising in this area, which covers shoring for civil works deeper than 1.5 metres.” “But it was here we found the perfect building and yard that suited our needs right down to the purpose built wash bay.” In what began as humble beginnings for Trenchmate founder Tom Porter, which saw him compose the business alongside

Weak link in the chain A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. In the case of the economic highway that is supposed to efficiently link traffic between Wellington Airport and Kapiti, the Horowhenua and Manawatu, that weak link is the Basin Reserve. Along with Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett, I have applauded the decision of the New Zealand Transport Agency to appeal the Board of Inquiry’s rejection of the Basin Bridge application. The NZTA has lodged an appeal to the High Court on a number of points of law, including that the decision fails to recognise that the bridge’s height conforms to what is already allowed under the Wellington City District Plan. From its point of view, the NZTA wants to establish a direction for the future planning of transport infrastructure, both around the Basin and throughout New Zealand. It wants to have surety for other projects that are connected to the Basin flyover, such as the double tunnelling of Mt Victoria. As far as Kapiti is concerned, our reasons for wanting the ‘flyover’ to proceed
are based on the economic, health and social concerns of our ratepayers and residents. International and domestic passenger traffic coming through the gateway of Wellington Airport, hopefully bound for Kapiti, hits a bottleneck at the Basin Reserve. Our district health board area means our Kapiti people must use the health facilities at Wellington Hospital. Daily, many of our residents visit patients there and have to overcome the delays inherent in getting around the Basin Reserve. Socially, our ability to visit people in Wellington’s southern suburbs, or receive visits from them, is compromised by the knowledge there is congestion to overcome.
Economically, our new MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway will be much more effective if there is continuous traffic flow to and from Wellington. This is about looking at the whole region and the obvious spin-offs of eliminating all the bottlenecks — not just shifting them further down the line. I find it incredible to think that a Road of National Significance (RoNS) is expected to operate with such a glaring weak link in it. As Mayor of Kapiti, I am used to Council decisions being appealed by interest groups. The law however is a two-way street and it is entirely appropriate that the NZTA now argues its legal case to overturn this decision. We in Kapiti don’t want to see this project go into limbo for a couple of years while a Plan B is worked out. Plan A should proceed — unless there is a viable alternative. As I said at the start, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. At the Basin Reserve, the chain breaks. There is an opportunity through this appeal, to create a long-term fix.
Council joins development team Council has agreed to the establishment of a new economic development agency to drive Wellington Region’s growth. Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency (WREDA) merges the existing Greater Wellington Regional Council and Wellington City Council economic development, tourism and events agencies into a single councilcontrolled organisation. It will be established in November. This follows region-wide consultation in July and August, which involved a number of stakeholders identified by council. Submissions were generally supportive of the merger. WREDA will be governed through a
Wellington Regional Strategy Committee (WRSC) made up of elected members from across the region. Its operations will be overseen by a board of independent directors, who are currently being recruited. The new agency will provide genuine regional representation in setting the economic growth agenda and Kapiti will benefit from having a seat at the decision-making table, mayor Ross Church says. It will present a strong regional position which will help progress major regional economic initiatives. “In our view, if it’s good for the region, then it will also be good for Kapiti.
“If we’re not part of it, we will have fewer opportunities to influence what happens in our region in the future. “This will give us access to far greater resources than we could possibly call on locally. “It’s really important for us to have a voice at the table so we can influence where those resources are spent in the region.” Council agreed Mr Church will be its appointed representative, with councillor Gavin Welsh as the alternative. It also agreed to a regular reporting process to ensure council’s views on important issues are heard at WRSC meetings and that its decisions are reported back to council.

Spring ball raises $21,000 Financial Consequences
Every day we are faced with financial choices. It may be as simple as a choice of whether to buy this week’s special at the supermarket or as complex as whether to buy a house. How we stack up financially at any point in time is the end result of all the financial decisions we have made in previous years. We all start out in life with nothing, and as time goes on there is increasing divergence in people’s financial success depending on their chosen path in life and the financial decisions they make.
It was a night to remember for the many who attended the Coastguard Spring Ball, held at Southward Car Museum on Saturday night. About 250 people had an entertaining evening from 7pm to midnight. There were 20 auction items and 20 raffle draws, along with a three-course meal from Party Perfect Catering and music and dancing led by Aspire Big Band. Miss Universe New Zealand winner Rachel Millns, from Waikanae, attended in her first public appearance as the country’s reigning beauty queen. Money raised from the ball at this stage is estimated to be about $21,000, which will go towards a new Coastguard Kapiti Coast vessel.
LOOKING GOOD: Everyone dressed up for the ball.
Financial decisions are not just about money. They reflect our personalities, our values and the things we consider most important in life. For that reason, there is no such thing as a right or wrong financial decision. However, there is one essential ingredient to making a good financial decision and that is to understand the consequences of the decision. There are differences in what people consider financial success to be. For some, it is measured by vast wealth while for others, it is simply having enough money to live a comfortable life free of worries about money. However you measure financial success, making financial decisions without understanding the consequences is likely to lead to misery and failure.

Financial consequences are wide ranging. At the most basic level, spending more of your income now means you will have less to spend later, perhaps when you need it more. Some financial choices carry more risk and it is important to understand the consequences of possible loss. Borrowing money has consequences of future financial commitments and increased costs through payment of interest and fees. There is nothing wrong with spending more, taking financial risks or borrowing money so long as you understand and accept the consequences of those choices. The special appeal of this type of fund is that the capital is invested and only the income is distributed so funds can be given out every year, forever. Income will go to Kapiti charities so donors will know that they are helping their local community in perpetuity.

Ensuring future watering wells The Saturday, following the fire that damaged Paraparaumu Primary School, the Paraparaumu Raumati Community Board raised $800 for the school in just three hours at the Paraparaumu Beach Market. There were people who put $20 bills in the bin, others a handful of change. One man agonised, before his hand discovered a 10c coin in a corner of his pockets. He apologised saying that’s all he had. I thanked him more profusely. The ability to dig deep and give to a needy cause is a quintessential Kiwi character. Following the Christchurch earthquake, former board chair Louella Jensen and I organised a Red Cross collection at this same market and raised more than $4000. It’s not just about Kiwis raising money for Kiwi causes. Locals at the market were also generous during a collection organised by the Filipino community and the Red Cross for victims of Typhoon Haiyan. The Paraparaumu Beach Market, as with other such markets in Otaki, Te Horo, Waikanae and Paekakariki, provide a venue for local trading. A recent Massey University study found that an average family of four can save more than $100 per week in fresh fruits and veggies by patronising such Saturday markets. It’s the mix of fresh produce, entertainment and food that makes these markets become thriving community watering wells. Binding this mix together is another critical factor — these markets run on a hard cash economy. The paper and coin currency exchanging hands makes it convenient for the average person to exercise that generous Kiwi heart. There is much to be said about the symbolic and ritualised act of actually giving something
physical away to a good cause. The success of urban design and community planning is its ability to facilitate and enhance such values. The council is working through a consultation process to empower our communities to shape our future District Plan and also the Long Term Plan. A useful question to ask may be this — how will these plans facilitate and enhance such community watering wells? Do these markets fit into our understanding and appreciation of Kapiti being a ‘A String of Pearls’? Can the development of city-type urbanisation coexist with village-type communities and, if this is a good thing, how do we design such outcomes? These challenges can be better managed though community participation, resulting in common outcomes. While the long-term grand design is being worked on, council is also committed to a new culture of being ‘Open for Business’. Local authorities are bound by rules and regulations underpinned by laws passed by governments. There’s a balance between meeting such responsibilities while encouraging the dynamics of free enterprise. There is a recognition that council staff at the coalface are best placed to say: “How can we help you to negotiate through this maze of rules and regulations?”.

Empowering people The word ‘localism’ is becoming a world-wide trend and the idea of strengthening local governance by empowering councils and their communities to address issues of social and economic development is becoming increasingly important. While ‘localism’ is occurring under various guises in many countries, it all begins with the notion that local people, working with their local governments, are best placed to know and understand the issues affecting their communities. Kobus Mentz, recognised as one of Australia’s leading urban practitioners and thinkers; Suzie Johnson, a successful entrepreneur from small town Shannon; and Thames-Coromandel District Council Chief Executive David Hammond recently presented their thoughts on localism. Here are their thoughts: Mr Mentz says that how partnerships are formed is important to making things happen in a community. He discussed a number of planning projects where various entities had been involved in attracting capital, for an outcome that would benefit a community, such as the retail environment University Hill in Melbourne that was enabled by zoning and came to fruition through local government working with business, and a creative

quarter in Melbourne that saved heritage buildings and became a place in the community for creative industry jobs to locate. “Having the right conversations with right people in the right way is pertinent to an outcome. Councils have a critical role to play in setting the preconditions for employment growth and community well-being, which underpins sustainable communities.” Mr Hammond shared Thames-Coromandel District’s experience in designing governance institutions and decisionmaking processes to strengthen localism by empowering community boards. ThamesCoromandel District extended the role of its community boards to make their role more integrated, enabling them to make more decisions without going back through the council. “We need to explore and investigate how the Kapiti Coast might benefit from such an arrangement. “There is an increasing demand amongst our people for change and they’ve been very vocal about this, wanting quicker speed from services and more flexibility. Populations changing leads us in local government to think about
innovation in partnerships and service delivery, and also innovation in the management and governance of local authorities. For me, it is about changing so we can harness potential and innovation in communities to drive growth.” Suzie Johnson, the business owner behind fashion and giftware store Oosh, owns several commercial/retail buildings in Shannon where she and her family live. She believes innovative investment can stimulate the economies of small towns. “I’m a creative brain not an academic. I think in small towns, there is profit. Shannon has 18,000 cars a day driving through it so I thought the main street was asking for something to happen to it. We got amongst the council and had a meeting with town to move it forward and did cosmetic things around town like putting up hanging baskets and fixing the loos that got the community involved. For example, we had kids planting stuff. It’s about networking and asking the right people for help, in a positive way.” We need to bring a bit of Suzie’s localism to Waikanae, as the timeframe for the town centre redevelopment will be slow, we need to act now as a local community to bring some vibrancy to our own community and town centre. Let’s not just wait for council.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Balancing politics and playtime
I was bemused to see the negative responses of Tony Hunt and Margaret Brown to the letter by my nine-year-old daughter, Lara, outlining her concerns about child poverty in New Zealand. Contrary to the suggestions by these correspondents, Lara, who has a reading age of over 16 years, did, in fact, write this letter herself. She did this for her school’s Pride Challenge where children have the option to undertake a number of social, academic, sporting and cultural ‘challenges’ throughout the year. One of these challenges was to write a letter to a newspaper about an issue of concern to the child. Lara chose to do this and the subject matter was also of her own choosing. I can assure your correspondents that my daughter spends much time playing outdoors and having fun, and I find absurd the notion that having an interest in politics and the wider world somehow sullies her childhood. Lara has a lively, enquiring mind and great curiosity about the world. I would not choose to respond to her frequent questions about the recent election by telling her not to bother her pretty little head about such things. All children are individuals and some would not be ready, at nineyears-old, for these sorts of discussions, but I happen to have a child who is. Lara is hungry for information and I am happy to contribute to her cognitive and moral development by discussing a variety of issues with her in an age appropriate way. Naturally, Lara has been exposed to the values and beliefs of

I’m sure that many people reading my daughter’s letter would have seen it for what it is — a child expressing concern for those less well-off than her, a child with a developing social conscience and the confidence to write to her local paper about her concerns.

lend money they actually have, rather than creating money as debt and charging us interest on it. Multi-national corporations are insidiously slipping further into our society, affecting everyone. For example, now is the time to get informed about the TPPA negotiations. Only a slither has to do with free trade. Leaked chapters show corporations can sue New Zealand for law changes that affect their profitability. This treaty is being negotiated in secret but in consultation with these corporations, not the public. It is a binding agreement. In light of the gravity of this message, it would be fair to say I was disappointed at being excluded from some of the candidate publicity opportunities. However, in response to last week’s article about this, I did not ever use the term “discrimination”, which sounds far too negative for my liking. I believe it was a misguided judgment by some event organisers. Lesser-known voices like mine are an important way that new information and thinking can be brought to the public and voted in. We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking that created them. AMANDA VICKERS Waikanae
the adults in her life — as far as I’m aware, it is not yet a crime in New Zealand to hold left-leaning political views and all parents inevitably, either overtly or covertly, expose their children to their beliefs and values on all manner of subjects. However, Lara knows that she is free to disagree with the adults in her life. If she had written a letter extolling the virtues of the National government, I would have delivered that to the editor of your paper just the same. I’m sure that many people reading my daughter’s letter would have seen it for what it is — a child expressing concern for those less well-off than her, a child with a developing social conscience and the confidence to write to her local paper about her concerns. No matter which side of the political spectrum you sit on, I’m sure most New Zealanders would agree that has got to be a good thing. LINDA ZAMPESE Paraparaumu Beach

Regretfully moving on
I wish to take this opportunity to say what a pleasure it has been to be part of the Te Horo and Otaki communities over the last 28 years. My wife, Mary, and I firstly retired to Te Horo Beach, then 12 years ago moved to Otaki. We were both involved in bowling, the Otaki RSA and I enjoyed using the local pools at Waikanae, Levin and especially the Otaki Pool. Mary passed away three years ago and now I have sold up and am moving back to Upper Hutt, where most of my family lives. In Upper Hutt, I will continue with my bowling and swimming. I wish to thank all those I have met and made friends with in the area. It is with regret that I am moving on, but I will have fond memories of the area and its people. JOHN BROUGH Otaki

Coastal hazards regarded The withdrawal of contentious coastal hazard provisions from the Proposed District Plan (PDP) is expected to move towards its final stages on Thursday. Council’s regulatory management committee (RMC) will be briefed on arrangements to withdraw provisions relating to not just coastal hazards but also to hazardous substances and facilities and priority areas for restoration. A large proportion of the submissions to the PDP were on these three topics, particularly the coastal hazard management areas. A coastal advisory group is being formed to discuss future coastal hazard management options for the district. Following the CAG process, any new coastal hazard provisions within the District Plan will be open to a new round of public consultation. The RMC will also be briefed on work staff have done to create an amended list identifying rules contained in the PDP which have immediate legal effect, protecting heritage sites, areas of significant native bush and the habitats of native animals and birdlife. The changes follow the council’s decision to adopt Option 4 of those recommended by the review of the PDP.

Lost cat turns up 1 after 2 ⁄2 years DAVID HAXTON After two and a half years missing, a cat called Bella has been reunited with its owner. Rachael Cancian adopted kittens Bella and Choppa from the Wellington SPCA when she was living in Cambridge Terrace, Lower Hutt. She moved to The Esplanade, Raumati South, in February 2012 but a couple of months later, in April, both cats went missing. “We searched and searched for weeks and did everything we could to find them. “And then after such a long time I got a call from Pets On The Net saying they had found Bella.” Bella, who is microchipped, had been living with a family in Raumati since last December. Rachael’s cellphone number had changed but she was tracked down
because she adopted another cat and had registered with the SPCA in Nelson. “They found my new number and gave me a call.” After catching up with Rachael’s daughter Candace Cancian at Kapiti SPCA, Bella was flown down to the South Island and reunited with Rachael, now living in Motueka, on Friday. “It was lovely. “She still responded to her name which was quite cool. “She is quite big too, she was a kitten when we lost her. “She has been well looked after which I’m very thankful for too.” Rachael now has hope Choppa, a grey tabby, might be found. “I sort of lost all hope and thought they might both be dead.” She said Bella would be “spoilt for all the years we missed”.
Stress less, relax more People spend hours, days and weeks worrying about what other people are doing and what other people are thinking, wasting masses of emotions on things that they can’t control. One of my favourite and most appropriate quotes for this is ‘control the controllable’. If you dwell on things that have happened at work and worry about what other people are thinking about certain situations then you are chewing up so much energy on things that you can’ change. Using a sporting metaphor ‘you are never going to get the bounce of the ball every time’, things are going to go wrong sometimes and you will cock the odd thing up now and then, because that’s life. Your family and friends will also make mistakes along the game of life and I’m pretty sure everyone will do something wrong at one time of another. It’s how you choose to deal with the mistakes and how you choose to deal with what other people might think. Making mistakes is human nature and yes it will make you stronger if you can learn from the mistakes and become a better person because of it. I often meet people who love talking about other peoples errors or misfortunes and this is one thing that really get under my skin. We all make mistakes.

Dwelling on past situations and thinking long and hard about errors you made in the past is only going add more and more stress to your already tired and restless mind. Stress is a killer and will effect your home life, prevent you from losing weight and age you well before your time, so the less stress the better your health will be. If you sweat the small stuff and are a constant worrier it will certainly effect the people around you including, close friends and family will pick up some of your personality traits and start to think and worry about things that had never entered their mind before. The one thing that I love about the kiwi way of life is the ‘go will the flow’ and the ‘she’ll be right attitude’ that allows kiwis to not let little things in life affect them. I’m not saying don’t think, take care and take pride in your situation, I’m saying just don’t think about things too hard. Relax, stress less and don’t give a hoot what other people are saying.

Helping Polymyalgia I was speaking with one of my Hawke’s Bay clients last week who had been really struggling with Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR). This is an increasingly common inflammatory autoimmune disease causing muscle pain and fatigue. The standard treatment for PMR is based around the powerful anti-inflammatory steroid medication prednisone. Many make a full recovery usually over 12-18 months but others do not. It is of course the second group that often come to me for help.
tissue releases these chemicals and causes the inflammation of muscle fibres. We reduced inflammatory foods such as saturated fats, omega 6 oils, sugars especially high fructose syrup in fizzy drinks and refined carbohydrates. We balance this with lots of anti-inflammatory foods such as oily fish, green and low starch vegetables, whole grains, avocado, olive oil, and some nuts and seeds, especially almonds, walnuts and flaxseeds.
In my client’s case, each time he reduced medication doses below a certain level there would be a re-lapse of symptoms. For these people it is like a barrier that they cannot get through. I put him on my standard PMR nutrition programme of diet and supplements and after 6 months he has been able to completely come off prednisone and is now symptom free.
The supplement regime needs to be initially quite aggressive with a cocktail of minerals, antioxidants, vitamins, especially B complex and vitamin D, and energy nutrients such as Co enzyme Q10 and acetyl-l carnitine. We monitor progress closely and generally people start to feel benefits after 3 months. Give me a call if you need more information.
My standard PMR recovery plan involves adoption of a strongly anti-inflammatory diet and an intensive supplement programme. Our goal is to help to shut down production of inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins and cytokines. Research (Alvez-Rodriguez et.al, 2010) shows that affected muscle

Aircraft exhibition ‘well worth seeing’ DAVID HAXTON A trailer-size version of an ocean surveillance plane used in WWII is just one of many model planes on public display in Paraparaumu this weekend. Kapiti Primary School is the venue for the Kapiti Aeromodellers Club exhibition, on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4.30pm. There will be a wide range of aircraft, ranging from small, delicate indoor models to large, high-performance aerobatic and pure jets, as well as water birds — aircraft designed to fly off land and water. Interactive opportunities including flying computer simulation models are planned and, on both days, one of the pure
jets will fire up outside. “Obviously we cannot fly the models, but the sight, sound and smell of these high-tech models will be a feature well worth seeing,” club president Alastair Rivers said. This year the club celebrates 20 years’ activity at Queen Elizabeth Park and members are keen to share their hobby with the wider community. Mr Rivers’ 1/8 scale model of the Short Singapore III will be on display. He said New Zealand had four of the planes to do ocean surveillance out from Fiji in response to the Japanese expansion into the Pacific during WWII. “My model carries the insignia of the last flying Singapore, before
they were all scrapped and sunk to make breakwaters. “New Zealand then had Catalina flying boats to do the surveillance,” Mr Rivers said. The model, which took him seven years to construct from scratch, has a wingspan of 3.5m, a length of 2.5m and weighs 32kg without fuel. “The model hasn’t yet flown, but is well advanced with both field and water trials. Being an untested model and weighing so much, it requires a lot of pre-flight testing and must have a Civil Aviation Authority-approved certificate for model and pilot,” Mr Rivers said. The model has been built under the supervision of an independent inspector who has to complete the certification process.”

Making light work of energy savings CLOE WILLETTS Kapiti Coast District Council has jumped on board to support free national service LiteClub, a mostly government-funded initiative that has collectively saved 367 New Zealand sports clubs almost $2 million. Visiting sports clubs around the nation to help reduce their overall running costs, LiteClub helps by improving clubs’ energy efficiency, and reducing their environmental impact. The team’s efforts include installing energy efficient light bulbs, wrapping hot water cylinders, insulating pipes, fitting taps with water saving devices and toilets, and instigating sorting-at-source bins to help reduce waste sent to landfill. Part-funding LiteClub visits to sports divisions on the Kapiti Coast, council has liaised with local clubs to encourage their involvement in the programme, which councillor Jackie Elliott said is a great example of acting locally to make a difference globally. Elliot, who represents council on the Regional Waste Minimisation Education Forum, said: “the savings they are demonstrating through their work with sports clubs not only puts money back into club funds where they can be used for sports, but also contributes to reducing New Zealand’s carbon footprint”.
SPORTING SUPPORT: The LiteClub team passing on money saving tips to council staff and Kapiti Coast United members last week. From left, Simon Calcinai of KCDC, Catherine Chandler of Kapiti Coast United, LiteClub’s Claire Keeling, Paul Eisel and Dan Kelly, Greg Simmonds of Kapiti Coast United, and Mark Hammond of KCDC. PHOTO: KAP250914SPLLITECLUB “It’s a great initiative and everyone wins. Council is delighted to be supporting something that’s so good for our community, our region and our country.” Kapiti Coast United football club is one of the clubs enthusiastic about joining the programme, having switched to eco bulbs, sorting waste, wrapping its hot water cylinder and pipes, and installing water conservation devices on toilets.
LiteClub’s head of operations Dan Kelly said the changes made by Kapiti Coast United are likely to save them $6600 over the life of the installed products, as well as conserve 60,000 litres of water, and prevent 3.86 tonnes of carbon from entering the atmosphere. “LiteClub is always happy to help clubs manage their costs, and getting such great returns is made all the sweeter by the engaged and hardworking teams involved, both at clubs and the Council,” he said.

Free expo with something for all October 1 is the World Health Organisation’s Day of Older Persons. Although Saturday, October 11 is past that date, please mark it on your calendar. On that day the Kapiti Coast Older Persons’ Council invites you to attend our Age on the Go Expo, to be held in the Waikanae War Memorial Hall and the Senior Citizens Hall starting at 9.30am. Let’s make it a family occasion. Entry is free. The expo will have a balanced mix of professional services, voluntary organisations and various clubs and hobby groups too. There will be a tai chi demonstration and a nice atmosphere will be set through some background music. Petanque, craft Probus and scrabble clubs will attend, as will the Kapiti Coast Fly Fishing Club. If your interest is genealogy, you will be able to find out about joining a group. As with the last expo, each entrant will be given a passport and the idea is to have each stall-holder mark your passport. You then add your contact details before putting the completed passport into the draw for a prize. Recently some of us had the privilege of listening to a Powerpoint presentation and discussion from a world leader in the field of agefriendly. I am referring to the visit of Dr Alex Kalache, who
developed the age-friendly programme through his earlier position with the World Health Organisation. For those of you who are new to this concept, the programme was developed through work in 22 countries and 35 cities. The outcome was the World Health Organisation’s document ‘checklist of essential features of age-friendly cities’. It is fair to say this document is aimed at creating cities, towns and rural villages that are agefriendly. When this is achieved all who live, work and move about in these areas can do so with greater ease and safety. Many other countries have moved down the track by developing policies that emphasise agefriendliness. Canada is a good example, as is Australia. One person in four in New Zealand has a disability of one sort or another, and for retirees this figure goes up to 50 per cent. Having everything agefriendly would benefit many. Finally, SuperGold cards. We need to remember to ask each time we purchase anything if they’re accepted. We might be pleasantly surprised. My email for further details is stansfieldkapiti@xtra.co.nz

From the Chair Thanks to all members who have renewed their subscriptions for the year. It is great to have the support of a growing membership. We have some exciting changes ahead! Over the next few weeks our new web site will be going live in stages. The Board has had a sneak preview and it is looking very impressive. Thanks to Eden Design for working to a very tight budget and to all those who have supported this project – Chris Barber, CJ Diaz, Helene Judge,Tim Beere, Hannah Delaney, Stefany Knight, Jill Creighton and Richard Mansell. Following our AGM in October, we will be establishing two new committees for training and sponsorship and I encourage members who have an interest in these areas to put their hands up for these committees. In particular, training will be an important way of providing benefits to members and we are already doing preparatory work on how to approach this. Members of the advocacy committee continue to participate in the Economic Development Strategy Working Party which is preparing a new strategy to be approved by Council for the draft 2015 Long Term Plan being released in October. Congratulations to all the finalists in the Electra BKH Business Awards. There is a full house for what promises to be an exciting awards night on 10 October. Hip Hop-eration a feel-good film Hip Hop-eration, film screening now at Shoreline Cinema Waikanae, follows a troupe of courageous, yet cheeky, senior citizens on an extraordinary quest to perform at the World Hip Hop Championships in Las Vegas. Hip Hop-eration is a poetic feelgood film that proves age has no limits and that hip-hop can set you free. It will make you want to celebrate life, regardless of age or condition. If you love a feel-good movie, don’t miss the latest New Zealand film/documentary Hip Hoperation. It is a glorious, funny, poignant and thoroughly uplifting true
story about a wonderful group of seniors living on Waiheke Island. Inspired by their passionate ‘teacher’ Billie, they embark on one heck of a journey; firstly, to teach a group the intricacies of hip-hop dance, then to make it to the world championships is Las Vegas, United States. At the best of times, hip-hop is tricky, but in this case, the crew’s youngest member is 65, the oldest 94, and includes a gorgeous gal in a wheelchair and one who is legally blind. Far from being slapstick, it is a truly heartwarming story, full of personal anecdotes about the lives of the dancers, their hopes,
dreams and challenges. They embark on their huge plan, with the audacity and attitude that only true adventurers possess. As a viewer, you hope and pray that they make it, but at times the odds seem insurmountable. Hip Hop-eration is full of absolute characters who are not carefully crafted from someone’s imagination — they are actually real people. They embody the very best of the Kiwi spirit of ingenuity and openness. If you are not moved by the people, the story and the premise, I would eat my hat. It’s an absolute gem of a film. In cinemas September 25.

What’s On...
FOOD STALL REOPENS Otaki’s Sustainable Food Group’s weekly home-grown fruit and vegie stall re-opens on October 9. Making it easy for home gardeners to share their extra produce with others, and giving them a bit of money to put towards their gardens, is the idea behind the weekly Seasonal Surplus Stall. “Growing your own fruit,
vegetables, herbs, and eggs, as so many of us do in Kapiti, saves energy all along the chain, from agricultural machinery and fertilizers to transport, storage and supermarkets,” Dee Armstrong said. “This makes a more selfsufficient community, also, it tastes better.
“Anyone who has surplus to sell from their garden, orchard or hens can bring their produce to the stall clean, bagged, weighed and ready to go. “We buy the produce at 80 per cent of the price it will be sold at. “The other 20 per cent goes to cover expenses in setting up and running the stall.
KAPITI EVENTS
GUIDE
If you have an event from December 2014 to April 2015 and want to be part of the summer events guide contact paraparaumu@kapiticompany.co.nz or phone 04 2988195
“Any excess produce, or profit over and above expenses is given to a local community group. “People are asking when the stall is re-opening, as they have missed it. The prices are so reasonable, they say, and the quality so high, not to mention the excellent service and welcoming team.”
The stall, which is an initiative of Transition Town Otaki, closes over winter. The stall will operate every Thursday, on the green area by the council building in Main Street, Otaki, from 11am till 12.15pm, or until sold out. Growers come from 10.30am till 11am to bring their garden surplus to the stall to sell.
Fabric Fair for craft projects If you enjoy fabric, getting crafty and browsing hand-made craft stalls, this Saturday’s Fabric Fair at Coast Community Church will be a head turner. Held on behalf of Soroptimist International Kapiti Coast, from 11am to 3pm, the fair will see hands-on fabric technique demonstrations, including piping and binding, sewing machine techniques, applique´, quilting, and pattern cutting. Home-made sandwiches and cakes will be available on-site from the cafe´, along with stalls boasting a variety of fabric remnants, quilting pieces, haberdashery, patterns and general bits and bobs. Among those holding stalls this weekend is Levana Textiles, the Fabric Warehouse, Krazy Cow and the Lotto Shop, Paraparaumu Beach, with a range of options up for sale to cater to the sewer, quilter, embroider, patchworker, craftsperson and knitter.
A raffle containing great prizes is also a must-do, which includes a handmade quilt, vouchers for over $100 of goods, and fabric generously donated by fabric retailers. Entry is by gold coin and all proceeds will go towards supporting local charities that help women and girls achieve their potential. Soroptimist International, which works to improve the lives and status of women and girls around the world, will be donating the money to New Zealand notfor-profit organisations Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust, Stand for Children, and Atareira Mental Health Trust. For further information about the Fabric Fair and the Soroptimist International Kapiti Coast club, Google Kapiti Fabric Fair or contact Judith on 021 898 692, or Shennan on 04 902 2717. Options for first homes Now that the election is done and dusted we can get back to normality somewhat. It’s probably timely that we review where things are at for first home buyers. Whilst the borrowing outlook and publicity talks about challenges and minimum 20 per cent deposits, there are still plenty of options for first home buyers. If you have been in KiwiSaver 3 years perhaps call your provider to confirm what you could pull out as a deposit. Most banks are still in the 90 per cent lending space and we can get standard 90 per cent home loans for many borrowers with good characteristics and secure income. So clean credit history, good account conduct, strong income and minimal debt all help in this area. You can times your gross pre-tax annual income by
3.5 to get a real rough guide on borrowing power. Your short term debt and family size can also affect this. Welcome Home Loans are a good option for many borrowers though it does have restrictions. There are quite a few banks providing these and they can vary in the interest rates they charge so it pays to speak to a mortgage adviser to help you. Using a guarantor for extra equity or gifted deposits can also work. We set a plan to release guarantors as quickly as possible and this option can save borrowers on low equity fees and

interest rates. 90 per cent loans on construction new builds and even 95 per cent lending on ‘turnkey’ house and land packages are available. In some extreme cases we have got lending approved on 5 per cent deposit or managed to arrange a loan for boosting the deposit for high income applicants. A new home might be closer than you think but it is a complex area and a mortgage adviser can let you know quickly where your options lie across the market. For a free copy of our Home Buyer Guide contact our team 7 days a week on 0800 000 517 or email craig@craigpope.co.nz for all your mortgage and insurance needs. Designed by Peter Davis & built in 2000 by Carl Van Der Meer & his team, this is a rare & unique offering for todays busy modern family. Situated amongst the towering Norfolk pines within a quiet cul de sac just minutes walk from the Links golf course & the main beach precinct, this is a home that offers both form & function. I suspect the Designers brief was to create an elegant home with generous living spaces for both adults & children, high quality service areas, a big welcoming entry hall, & a sweeping feature staircase. At around 267m² the lower interior offers a large family friendly granite kitchen as its centrepiece, a relaxed family/dining room with gas fire, a separate West facing formal lounge, master brm ensuite plus 2nd brm, & access into the double garaging. From the homes main entry hall a beautiful curved staircase leads upstairs to a generous 3rd brm with its own private lounge & wc, making it ideal for both teenagers, guests or the option of running a homestay. If it's the perfect home in the perfect location you are after, may we suggest you've found it. Welcome Home.

IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH
VEGETABLES • Most vegetables can be planted out now with care being taken with Tomatoes. They will require protection from frosts. Cucumbers, chillies, eggplant and peppers are in the same boat, don’t plant out doors until frosts have finished. • Potatoes can be planted – remember to sprout them first. • Protect young seedlings of vegetables and flowers from slugs and snails with Quash slug and snail bait • Plant out Broccoli, Beetroot, Lettuce, Silver Beet, Radish, Carrots and Celery. • Herbs Plant out your new season herbs such as Coriander, Chervil, Dill, Parsley and of course Basil in a warm spot • Don't cut the foliage off your spring bulbs that have finished flowering, just leave them or tie them in a knot because the leaves need to feed the bulbs for next season. • Are you concerned about a hot dry Summer having a disastrous effect on your garden? Plenty of Mulch in your soil will help retain water as well as improving the structure of your soil and suppressing weed growth. It's excellent for breaking down clay or poor draining soil. • Don't cut the foliage off your spring bulbs that have finished flowering, just leave them or tie them in a knot because the leaves need to feed the bulbs for next season.
TREES & FLOWERS • Sow seeds of Larkspurs, Carnations, Hollyhocks, Cosmos, Nemesias, Cornflowers, Sweet Peas, Zinnias, • It's time to plant Summer bedding plants like Petunias, Lobelias, Marigolds and Impatiens ideal for borders, containers and baskets • Now is a good time for feeding Roses. • Watch out for insects they love the fresh new shoots. • Start applying your Shield and Gild at the first sign of attack. • Begin watering your Roses now, keep the water off the foliage to prevent pest and diseases. • Stake newly planted trees to protect from wind damage
FRUIT / EDIBLES • Strawberries will soon start to ripen in warmer places so feeding them with strawberry fertiliser will help produce tasty berries. • Protect ripening fruits from birds by covering with netting, installing a cat or hanging old cds in the trees. • Plant out new seasons citrus - loads of new season’s stock is in the garden centres. • Spray pip and stone fruit at bud burst for blight.

pring is a wonderful time of year to get inspired by colour, and where better to start but in the place that is closest to the heart - home. Our homes can psychologically influence our behaviour, emotions and mental health in which colour can play a major roll. So why not take a walk on the wild side! Colour trends suggest brilliant yellows, pumpkin oranges and tomato reds. Used as ascent colours, these are the hottest of the season. Think cushions. They are one of the quickest ways of introducing colour to your home inside and out. And furniture whether it be wooden or cane is ideal for transforming with a fresh coat of paint and for introducing that pop of colour. Vamp your spaces up with bold and extreme patterned floor rugs coordinated with photo frames and lampshades. Vibrant pouffes are also excellent pieces when extra seating is required. Try colour- blocking or personalizing a wall in stripes of your favourite colours. Wall decals, which can easily be moved later, are another simple way of bringing colour to your room. Colour should reflect who you are so go ahead, be brave and enjoy the journey!

Kapiti women celebrated Women’s Suffrage Day with a breakfast in Paraparaumu. Guests were greeted on arrival by two women from the Electoral Commission, dressed as suffragettes, and attractive
and great-grandmothers, whose thoughts and activities have mostly gone unrecorded, despite their huge contribution to our lives today. Soroptimist International of Kapiti Coast organised the event.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST FRUSTRATING PART OF JUDGING THE SHOW?
The long hours and months on set are tough because the rest of my working life doesn’t stop. I would also say the volume of food you try as a judge is a real challenge.
. . . AND THE MOST SATISFYING?
Going on the journey with the contestants and seeing their growth over the course of the show definitely makes it worth it.
ARE YOU A PATIENT MAN?
KAPITI’S GOLD CARD HOLDERS Contact 04 298 5654
FROM YOUR TIME AS A MASTERCHEF JUDGE, HAVE NEW ZEALAND AMATEUR COOKS SURPRISED YOU?
I think it’s children that have surprised me the most. Every season that the show airs I hear from more and more children who are watching and really getting into their food. They’re willing to experiment and try anything. Kiwi cuisine will really see the benefit of this in the years to come.

SIMON GAULT MODERN CLASSICS, YOU USE THE PHRASE “SIGNATURE 5 PER CENT MAGIC”. PLEASE EXPLAIN
IMON Gault . . . husband, father, pilot, and of course, chef extraordinaire. The effervescent Kiwi has eaten and cooked his way around the globe devising his own versions of some the world’s most famous dishes. His latest book includes timeless classics given the Gault ‘‘5 per cent magic twist” to make them ideal for the modern table. I asked Simon some questions:
or email pat.cumming@kapitinews.co.nz for more information
If I’m in the kitchen then no, you can’t afford to be. You need multiple components to come together at once and waiting for elements would ruin a dish.
WHERE AND WHEN DID
I’ve taken some timeless classic dishes from New Zealand and around the world and tipped them upside down to modernise them and make them my own.
YOU START YOUR CULINARY CAREER?
I started off as an apprentice at Antoine’s Restaurant in Parnell, Auckland, when I was 16.

WHO WAS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE?
I’ve had a lot of great influences over the years. In the early days I cooked in the UK for a couple of years, so it was Kenneth Bell, the owner and executive chef of Michelin-starred Thornbury Castle who influenced me a lot. Kenneth had an OBE in cooking and was the first chef outside of France to gain a Michelin star. He opened my eyes to high standards and exposed me to the world’s best ingredients.

Sportspeople are being reminded to practise good hygiene after experts identified “risky” behaviours among some rugby players which could increase chances of getting a nasty infection. A small study being presented at Public Health England’s (PHE) annual conference in Warwick found that rugby players often share towels or razors and do not mind taking a dip in the same ice bath. Researchers were conducting an investigation into a serious infection, PVL-MSSA, which usually causes boils, abscesses and carbuncles.
"Experts identified “risky” behaviours . . . which could increase chances of getting a nasty infection.” They looked into a rugby club as the sport has been linked to the condition because of close contact and spread of infection through open “turf burns”. The PHE team carried out tests on team members and staff and asked them about behaviours which could lead to the spread of infection. Of the 59 people who responded, 11 said they regularly share towels, one in 10 admitted often sharing razors one-third said they used a cold bath after a game or training. Dr Deepti Kumar, a consultant in communicable disease control at PHE, said: “PVL-MSSA can be a very serious infection and any positive result will require medical treatment not just of the patient but also of their close contacts or family.” — AAP

Can you tell me how soon after conception our hearts begin to beat? I saw my daughter’s heart beating in utero at six weeks: a tiny light flashing on and off. Since then I’ve often wondered if our hearts are created at the moment of conception. And if not, how does such a vital organ evolve? Thanks for any enlightenment. It’s funny what we spend time wondering about. My daughter is now 7 years old! — L. Unbelievable as it is, an embryo starts life on Day 1 as a simple cell, a fertilised egg, without any of the special features that make us unique, except for the blueprint that guides it all, our DNA. No heart, no organs. It is smaller than a grain of salt, rolling down the fallopian tubes dividing madly, then implanting in the uterus or womb at about 7 days old. The cells divide: one, two, four, eight, 16, 32, 64 . . . right up to 37 trillion in adulthood. But before that, at 21 days, the heartbeat begins — except it’s not really a heart yet. Our genes have dictated which cells are made, how they specialise, and to where they migrate. These collections of cells form two simple blood vessels that sit side-by-side, then fuse together, thicken and bulge. Specialised electricity-generating cells have already migrated to the right location on the tube. At 21 days,
THE BEGINNING: The embryo starts as a single cell and starts
these cells start pulsing, and the heart tube starts beating. Three days later, the tube folds over twice, does a half-twist and assumes the rounded shape of a normal human heart. When it doesn’t all go to plan, the infant can be born with a cardiac abnormality. One in every hundred people has a bicuspid aortic valve, the most common congenital cardiac malformation, where the valve has two leaflets instead of three. More severe anomalies can result in miscarriages. Because organ development happens largely in the first two months of pregnancy, many of these women won’t even realise they were pregnant, let alone that they’ve miscarried. The best estimates are that more than 30 per cent of all pregnancies end up in miscarriage, but only about half
of those are actually noticed by the women themselves. By seven weeks “gestational age” (equal to the embryo’s age of five weeks) a heartbeat is usually visible on ultrasound. Even though the fetus is the size of a lentil and the heart is pumping far less than a drop of blood, there’s a noticeable flash with each beat. For most women, this is a milestone: the first time they’ve seen they’re pregnant. Gary Payinda is an emergency doctor who would like to hear your medical questions. Email him at drpayinda@gmail.com. Smear tests’ days numbered A simple urine test could offer women a less invasive alternative to smear tests, which screen for cervical cancer. New research reveals urine tests accurately and efficiently screen for the human papilloma virus (HPV). Doctors behind the UK study say the test could help reverse a fall in the number of young women being screened for possible cancer. HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. Usually, it is harmless but, in some cases, it can cause changes to cells, which can develop into cancer. Urine tests that could screen for possible cancer without the discomfort and embarrassment associated with a smear have been considered before but their accuracy has been in doubt. However, in an analysis of 14 studies involving 1433 sexually active women, researchers at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry observed encouraging results. Urine tests detected 87 per cent of positive HPV cases, and 94 per cent of negative cases. Urine tests specifically to detect two strains of the HPV16 and HPV18 viruses, which have been found to cause 70 per cent of cervical cancers, were also successful. Results from the 14 studies varied but researchers say they are confident urine testing “should be considered as an accurate and acceptable alternative that could increase screening coverage”. Experts say urine tests could be an alternative for women who are reluctant to have smear tests. Urine tests could also help detect more cancers in poorer countries where medics struggle to carry out comprehensive smear screening. Liz Engel, of the UK’s Eve Appeal, which campaigns for better detection and treatment of gynaecological cancers, says: “We will be following the development of this encouraging research closely. A urine test, which is much less invasive and embarrassing than the current cervical screening test or smear, will undoubtedly have a positive effect on the number of women being tested.”

Turns out granny wasn’t telling porkies There’s some truth to the effectiveness of folk remedies and old wives’ tales when it comes to serious medical issues, according to findings by a team from Detroit Medical Center. Dr Sonal Saraiya and her colleagues in Michigan found that packing strips of cured pork in the nose of a child who suffers from uncontrollable, lifethreatening nosebleeds can stop the haemorrhaging, a discovery that won them a 2014 Ig Nobel prize, the annual award for sometimes inane, yet often practical, scientific discoveries. This year’s winners honored at Harvard University by the
Annals of Improbable Research magazine included a team of researchers who wondered if owning a cat was bad for your mental health and Japanese scientists who tested whether banana peels are as slippery as cartoons would have us believe. As has become the custom, real Nobel laureates handed out the prizes and winners were given 60 seconds to deliver their acceptance speech. Sticking pork products up the patient’s nose was a treatment of last resort when conventional treatments had failed, Saraiya said, and was used only for a very specific condition known as
Glanzmann thrombasthenia, a rare condition in which blood does not properly clot. “We had to do some out-ofthe-box thinking,” she says. “So that’s where we put our heads together and thought to the olden days and what they used to do.” The 4-year-old child’s nostrils were packed with cured pork twice, and according to their study, “the nasal vaults successfully stopped nasal hemorrhage promptly (and) effectively.” The method worked because “there are some clotting factors in the pork . . . and the high level
of salt will pull in a lot of fluid from the nose,” she says. Still, Soraiya does not recommend sticking pork up your nose for a routine nosebleed, as it could cause infection. Kiyoshi Mabuchi, a professor of biomedical engineering at Kitasato University in Japan, studied the slipperiness of banana peels as an extension of his research into human joint lubrication system. “I have gotten . . . evidence that the friction under banana peels is sufficiently low to make us slip,” Mabuchi says. The other good thing about
his study is that his colleagues got to eat the bananas. Several scientists won for studying the mental health of cat owners. The bottom line? Owning a cat may be hazardous to your health. Dr David Hanauer, of the department of paediatrics at the University of Michigan and coauthor of one of the studies, says there’s no reason for cat owners to panic. “It may simply be that people with depression gets cats because they feel depressed,” he says. “I am in no way telling people to get rid of their cats.”

Las Vegas trip brings out the best Six Kapiti basketballers had an amazing opportunity to play in age group basketball tournaments in Las Vegas in July. The six players from Kapiti were Jack Hughes-Richards, Emily Teono, Zach Shearman, Kahu Sturmey, Josh Bunker, Emmerson Kavakura and Petelo Leaupepe. All were selected for the New Zealand Basketball Academy age group teams who played in tournaments in Las Vegas. “All players did extremely well and learnt a lot from the experience and all are hungry to return again,” Kapiti Basketball Association director Angelo Robinson said. “The competition was fierce and physical and took a bit of getting used to, along with the different style of refereeing where only blatant and obvious fouls etc are called. “Age group teams came from all over the USA, plus Mexico and Canada to play in these tournaments and all with attitudes and determination to win. “Coaches, players and spectators were all intrigued with seeing these teams that had come all the way from New Zealand. “The weather was another factor for our players — days of 110 to 115F — heat a lot of our players had never experienced before so it was all about constant hydration and training in the conditions before each tournament. “I could say a lot more about the trip and the experiences and opportunities for our Kapiti players but thought it best they put it in their own words.”
Emily Teono, 15 and under girls
American basketball is a lot more physical, faster and stronger than New Zealand basketball. The intensity is awesome, I love the way they play. I’ve learnt so much playing in America and now I know what I need to do to get better. My team was full of good vibes and positivity, we all had a close bond on and off the court. Which is one of the reasons why I think we were so successful. We played two tournaments the first one ‘Jam On It’ was an age group competition 15 and under. Our team won our pool and quarter-finals, which took us to the semifinals. We took off from the first whistle with half an hour of hard basketball and pulled out on top. The heat was outrageous even with air con. East Sidez from Hawaii came on top in their semifinals as well. Which meant
we had to play them for first and second place. But they couldn’t quite hold us down from the get go, they put up such a good fight. After the big win the other NZBA teams did a haka for us which was such an honour. Our second tournament, called ‘Grand Finale’ was Varsity Grade (16 and 17 years). We lost one game in our pool but because of points differential we made it to the finals against a team from Wyoming. We played a hard game, but they played better. We came second, an awesome result against older girls. I’m very grateful to have experienced such a cool opportunity and very proud of what our team has achieved.
Jack Hughes-Richards, 15 and under boys
Playing in the Vegas tour for the 15 and under boys was a lot tougher than last year. It has highlighted some skills I need to improve on personally if I am going to take my basketball any further in the future. I have put a plan in place already to work on this, I was grateful to my NZBA coach Troy Mclean for the time he spent coaching us and the advice he gave to me during the tour. I enjoyed the time I spent with the other team members. I feel really lucky to have been given the opportunity to play basketball in the United States.
Zach Shearman under-14 boys’ team
It was fun playing in the tournaments. It was hard to start with but we got there. The games are much more physical than we are allowed to play here in New Zealand. I learnt to play harder and tougher, so when I go back to the States I know what I am up against and I know what to bring to my college and rep teams. I got highest scorer for both our tournaments we played in. Our team played as a team and we all worked together and got along well. We did well considering we played up two grades higher and against older players. Highlights on the court for me were getting used to the USA style of play and putting up a fight to make the other team work for their win.Highlights for me off the court was going to Circus Circus, shopping and hanging out with my team mates.
Josh Bunker under-14 boys’ team
Going to Las Vegas is an experience I will never forget.
EXPERIENCE: Angelo Robinson, in blue shirt, with some of the New Zealand Basketball Academy players who took part in tournaments in Las Vegas. PHOTO: KAP030914SPLBASKET Playing against some of the best players in America in my age group was an amazing experience. Playing in the United States is very different to New Zealand, it was much harder and the games were much rougher. Our team was astonished at how aggressive they played but we adapted quickly. The highlights of the tour for me was playing basketball in America, watching an NBA Pro — Summer League game and shopping. We were especially proud of ourselves because we were playing two age groups above our age group. The temperature outside was incredibly hot 110F most days, the outside cooling system they had in one of the outside malls was amazing it sprayed a fine mist over you. The stadium where we played was air conditioned helping us to play. I am hoping to be selected to go again next year.
Kahu Sturmey under-14 girls’ team
For two years I’ve played basketball with a local team in a Wellington College competition and also at Hoop Club in Kapiti. Through Hoop Club I was told to register for the New Zealand
Basketball Academy training camps held over the summer. NZBA is a basketball development programme run in Wellington, and every year they take some age grade teams over to the United States to play in summer tournaments. Through the training camps I was selected for an NZBA team to play in Las Vegas. The teams that went are made up of college and intermediate kids from around New Zealand, and our team came third in both of our tournaments. The trip cost heaps of money but we had six months to fundraise so my family has been busy cutting and selling firewood. Thanks to everyone who bought some wood. Through this experience I have learned heaps more about the game, and was awarded most improved player in my team. I’ve met heaps of awesome people, made new friends and played basketball against American teams in a huge building that holds 40 basketball courts. I am grateful to the NZBA for providing me with this opportunity and I encourage others who have a love of this game to have a go too. Hoop Club is a good place to start, good basketball development, good contacts in the
sport, and good people to meet. If you’ve got any questions come and see me, I am happy to help you out.
Emmerson Kavakura under-13 boys
Our U13 Boys team won their division playing in the final against Mexico winning 40 to 28. I was fortunate to play in every game, and I learnt that being mentally prepared was essential. There was a lot of ball pressure in all the games and I felt that my ball security improved, I also realised that fitness plays an important part in the way you think and react in every game and this can be crucial. The games we played a couple of days before the actual tournament were great as our team was able to get a feel for how they play in America, how the refs are and it was a good warm up to building our team’s confidence. The first few games I was very nervous because the quality of the players were high and the game was a lot faster than here in New Zealand. Overall, being able to take part in the Las Vegas tour was an experience that has made me more hungry to get on the court, and also what to expect if I am selected next year.
Kapiti College girls shake off bumps CLOE WILLETTS Kapiti College girls’ basketball saw a standout season this year, despite a couple of minor bumps along the way. Kapiti College Year 9 girls wecolmed exciting results,
winning the college girls division 3 basketball for 2014. Coach Raima Kingi said the girls “were a pleasure to coach”, with evident skills and a “commitment to the team”. The school’s senior girls basketball team began the season
on an unsteady path without a coach, before Peter Lambert and Fabian Pappafloratos got the ball bouncing and committed to coaching the team. A mixture of basketballers, netballers and sport players, senior girls saw an early season
loss for their grade games, and were placed in girls championship division two. “After losing their first division game, things improved and they won all consecutive games,” Kapiti College basketball spokesperson Jacqui
Shearman said. Being placed in the top four teams of their division for the finals was “a real booster for the girls”, who Mrs Shearman said proved that “training well, team dedication and respecting your coaches helps self-development”.

Picking brains behind brawn GRAEME BARROW
T
HIS is, by some distance, the best New Zealand rugby book in many years. After a stream of biographies, most rather banal, this is intellectual fare by comparison — interesting, informative, well written, and full of insights into the efforts and intelligence that go into the remarkable success of the All Blacks. Since about 1981 New Zealand has gradually taken over from South Africa as the world’s dominant rugby power. Why? The introduction of the advantage law was the main reason, but there are others — not least the attention paid to techniques and, even more so, tactics. The ABs have been outthinking the opposition. Johnson is a major rugby personality. A fine player for Hawkes Bay and an All Black triallist, he was also a national administrator. But his greatest contributions were his pivotal roles in getting the Rugby World Cup off the ground, and the establishment of the Golden Oldies organisation. He is the main contributor to the book, but there are others. Various former All Black coaches and captains comment on various issues — captaincy, leadership, alcohol, the Maori and Polynesian influences, the changes wrought by professionalism, politics, fitness, tradition, and others. The men are John Graham, Colin Meads, Brian Lochore, Ian Kirkpatrick, Andy Haden, Andy Dalton, Buck Shelford, John Hart, Laurie Mains, Wayne Smith and Graham Henry. Since most of these men have similar views on the topics, there is some repetition, but there is enough divergence of opinion to ensure that the interest never flags. Of the players, Haden — because he was a catalyst in bringing about crucial changes, like professionalism and an enlightened attitude to women — is the most informative. Shelford is the most philosophical and thoughtful. Well done to him for
pointing out that if you lose you must do so graciously — a trait which has been in short supply in the last decade. Of the coaches, Laurie Mains and John Hart have the most of interest to contribute. Mains had an extraordinary knowledge of detail — even of the requirements of the various forward positions, even though he was a fullback in his playing days. Hart was in many ways a visionary, and his knowledge of business, and matters like sponsorship, enabled him to contribute in ways other than as the inspirational coach he was. Other contributions, on the wider subject of winning generally, come from Dr Geoff Watson, Dr Farah Palmer, and Dr Hugh Morton. Johnson has a suggestion, or at least a hope, which is that New Zealand should benefit financially by way of transfer fees from the large number of coaches and players who go to other countries, mostly in Europe. With respect, I can’t see this happening. These people, the players especially, go abroad mainly for the money but also for a change of lifestyle. They are not poached, or seduced away from their existing contractual arrangements. In this they are no different to those in other, nonsports, jobs. Who can blame them? Their earning years are few. This is very different from, say, soccer, or rugby league, where one club approaches another to buy a player.
AUTHOR: Tom Johnson is a major rugby personality.
