October-November Troubadour Tribune

Troubadour Tribune Dear Parents,

in their faith, assume the responsibilities of leadership, achieve academically to their greatest potential, and commit to the giving of themselves in service to those in need.

September brings the changing of the seasons, the beginning of school, the leaves changing color, and the weather well, we had hoped would change! So, too, the beginning of a new school year also brings change. In any given year, at any school, there can be many changes or sometimes very few. These are natural and usually seem to occur somewhat unnoticed. Change, whether anticipated or unexpected, can sometimes be difficult to navigate. But similar to our adjustment from the sweltering heat of summer to the cool autumnal evenings, we adapt to the changing culture in our everyday lives just as easily.

Catholic High School

October-November 2012

Over the summer, and into the beginning of the fall, we have welcomed several new staff and faculty members to our community. Many have been here before either as a student or as a parent. The thread that ties each of them, and all of us, together is the commitment to the mission of St. Francis. Every day we witness their commitment to the success of our students, not just success while they are here, but their success as they mature and go on to college. We graduate young women who, throughout their years here, grow

These pillars of our education seem to be revealed more significantly as the girls reach their senior year. Similar to a fragile rose at its bud, the petals unfold and reveal the beauty deep within its gentle shape. We see the blossoming of these young women who have been nurtured by the mission and vision of St. Francis. That mission is embodied in the daily lives of our faculty and staff, their interactions with these Troubies, who grow and leave the safety of our environment at graduation and go on to change the world! We welcome the new Troubies of our freshman class and transfer students, welcome back our alumnae teachers, and welcome everyone who embraces the mission of St. Francis. A great year lies ahead!

Margo Reid Brown ’81 President

SFHS Open House Sunday, October 14 Parent Help Needed

See, Do, Be like Christ: Kissing the Lepers During the month of October we celebrate our patron St. Francis of Assisi’s feast day and so it is appropriate to reflect on some of his insights and experiences. There are six such experiences that Campus Ministry has challenged our students to explore this year. One such experience involves St. Francis kissing a leper. It is said that of all the things and people in the world, St. Francis struggled and despised lepers the most. The cultural norms of the day gave him all the justification he needed to avoid people with leprosy. Leprosy is a very visible disease with obvious manifestations on the face, ears, arms, fingers, elbows and legs. For Francis to embrace a leper it took serious reflection, a change of heart and great courage. He would break ties with his peers and social class. It is easy to see the connection between the school year theme of “See, Do, Be like Christ” and St. Francis’ struggle to embrace a leper. The challenge is seeing with eyes that are looking beyond one’s current worldview. St. Francis’ example calls us to look beyond a worldview (see like Christ) that marginalizes people, to embrace (do like Christ) those people in our midst that make us uncomfortable and then take our experiences to prayer (be like Christ). As our school year moves forward we are challenged to follow the Gospel call of loving others especially the lepers of today: those who are voiceless, those who are forgotten; those who most likely make us uncomfortable, and then to take our reflections to prayer and thus become more like Christ.

Eucharistic Adoration:October 8 & November 13

Parents and grandparents are invited to join us for our school-wide Eucharistic Adoration. We can get so busy that we don’t take time to sit down and think awhile, to stop and prayerfully reflect, or to quietly relax in the presence of God. Sign-in at the front office, come to the Chapel and join us; you will find peace and joy by spending some time in quiet with our Lord. It is a perfect way to let go of all our busy nervousness and rest with Him without distractions. If you can join our group, please schedule your time at Volunteer Spot for October; or Volunteer Spot for November.

Homecoming 2012

Dean of Students

Spirit Week begins Friday, October 12, and ends with the Homecoming Dance on Saturday, October 20 (and clean-up Sunday afternoon*) This is traditionally the most exciting time of the year for Troubies, filled with preparations and activities. The class competition culminates on Friday, October 18 when students and alumnae gather in the gym for the Spirit Rally (please note, we cannot safely accommodate parents or other guests).

Reminders from the Dean: Parents should be checking their student’s social media, as we have ongoing issues with comments being posted that are inappropriate, harassing, or offensive to our students and families. Dress Code for Date Dances (Homecoming Dance, October 20)

The entire Homecoming schedule, including days when the campus is open for students to meet for planning activities and preparing decorations beginning October 1, is posted on the St. Francis website (see “Homecoming” under News on the home page.) Also posted is information about the Homecoming Dance, including purchasing tickets (October 8-16) and dress code.

• Girls should wear semi-formal wear to Homecoming • Dresses must be at least knee length • Girls may wear a strapless dress, however no skin may be exposed the stomach, back or chest • The male dates for semi-formal dances should wear dress shirts, dress pants or Docker-style pants;

Help make drop off and pick up easier and smoother for everyone: • Please pull all the way forward toward the gym. Stopping in front of the SF building causes back up and delays for everyone. If you pull all the way forward you will make the traffic light faster and then vehicles can cycle through the lanes faster.

This event is a cherished St. Francis tradition – and a traditional sell-out! Dads (or father-figures) and daughters should put their tables together and purchase your reservations online: Father Daughter Dinner Dance. We encourage you to submit your RSVP early, as this event will fill up.

• Main gates close at 7:40 am and cannot be re-opened until 8:10 am, do not attempt to call the office; they cannot be opened.

Volunteers are also needed to help with set-up, check-in and more. Please contact Teresa Rice trice95843@yahoo.com, 916302-6211, if you would like to earn parent volunteer hours on this fun event or sign up through Volunteer Spot.

Guidance Department College Reps Visit SF Campus Each year, over fifty colleges and universities send representatives to visit the St. Francis campus. College Representatives meet with students in the Guidance Center unless otherwise noted. Students can log on to Naviance to see the dates and times of visits and sign up to meet with a college rep. Juniors and Seniors may ask permission to attend if the visit is scheduled during a block when they have class. Freshmen and Sophomores may only attend on a free block.

Juniors Mrs. Millner is meeting with each Junior for a “Junior Check-in” appointment September through November. Students receive a transcript and a timeline for Junior year and any other questions or concerns are discussed. The PSAT will be administered on Oct. 17th. All Juniors have been registered for the test by St. Francis High School. See additional information about the PSAT on the SF website at PSAT Info. Junior Student/Parent In-Class College Counseling will be held on January 14th and 15th. Sophomores Sophomores are meeting individually with Mrs. Doyle from September through November. Individual and small-group counseling is also available throughout the year.

For All Parents Mark your calendars for the parents’ workshop “Paying for College” to be held on Wednesday, December 5th from 7:00 – 9:00pm at St. Francis. You will learn about the college financial aid process from an expert who has several years of experience in the field.

The PSAT, a practice SAT test, will be administered on October 17th. All Sophomores have been registered for the test by St. Francis High School. All sophomores are encouraged to keep day dreaming about college by taking a casual walk through college campuses and creating a “dream” list on Naviance.

Seniors Seniors received in-class college counseling in September in preparation for the college application filing process. Seniors are also scheduling individual college counseling appointments, and we encourage parents to attend with their daughter.

Freshmen Freshmen have been meeting with Mrs. Anderson for group counseling meetings. These meetings will be completed by early November. The meetings have focused on involvement in St. Francis and discussion on their 4 year plan.

Seniors are encouraged to check their e-mail and Naviance daily for announcements about college visits in the area, college fairs, and additional college-related information.

Freshmen will take the PLAN test on October 17th. St. Francis High School has already registered all freshmen for this test. Information will be shared with freshmen in their homerooms. Freshman parents are asked to help their daughters make notes on the “Instructions for Completing Your Answer Folder,” which will be distributed to students in advance of the test.

On October 17th, seniors will enjoy “College Day.” They are encouraged to visit local college campuses and work on college applications. Seniors are not required to be on campus.

Finance Office Senior Parents: Please remember that your 15 hours of parent service must be completed and reported by January 15, 2013. If you plan to fulfill your hours on specific events or projects in the second semester, please complete a service report form and indicate what service you plan to perform and an estimated number of hours. Verification will be made following the event or project. Statements for the additional $500 non-participating tuition will be sent early in the second semester to senior parents who haven’t reported hours.

Semi-Annual Tuition Payment Plan The second and final tuition payment for those on a semi-annual payment plan is due November 1. Clearance Cards On Monday, December 6, 2012 clearance cards will be distributed in homeroom. Clearance cards are required for students to take their semester final exams. Students will not receive a clearance card unless tuition accounts are current as of November 15, 2012. If you think you have a past due balance, please contact Michael Gallo at (916) 737-5042 to make payment arrangements. The status of your account could also affect your daughter receiving her quarterly/semester report card and access to NetClassroom. Please note that a monthly late fee of $25 is charged to all accounts with a past due balance. Additionally, overdue library books, unserved detentions, negative cafeteria balances, and athletic holds can delay the receipt of your daughter’s clearance card.

Senior Graduation Fee pays for the facility rental at Memorial Auditorium, cap and gown and other miscellaneous costs. The payment methods are below depending on your payment plan. • Electronic Funds Transfer Plans - The Senior Graduation Fee of $150 will be deducted along with your regular electronic funds transfer in the month of November. • Annual and Semi-Annual Payment Plans - November 1st, 2012 is the due date for those who have not already paid. 4

Academic Teams & Student Activities St. Francis High School Model United Nations

Mini-Lifesavers Pro Life Club! The St. Francis High School Mini-Life Savers Pro Life Club is hard at work! Club members dedicate their free time to prayer, education, fundraising, and activism on behalf of the unborn, newborn, the condemned, the exploited, and the elderly. Many remain unaware of the Catholic Church’s stance on pro life issues, so much of what the Mini Lifesavers do include spreading information on honoring and respecting the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. As this message proves counter-cultural, Troubies conduct themselves in a respectful, helpful, open, non-judgmental manner while relying on critical support from friends, family, faith, and Church teachings. St. Francis students know they can make a difference!

What is Model United Nations (“MUN”)? A club for aspiring models? Is it a debate team? If you have no clue about Model United Nations this article hopes to clarify. Though our SF team members are all lovely enough to be models (the team was named best-dressed by bestdelegate.com), and certainly 2012 SF MUN team Apprentice can debate, Model United Nations proves so much more! SF MUN members Caroline Vielhauer ’16 and Daisy Romo ’16 is a highly-committed academic team which competes at various college conferences throughout the year. MUN seeks to simulate the United Nations general assembly action. Students gather to represent member nations in committees such as World Trade Organization, Disarmament, Word Health, Security Council, and others. At colleges such as UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and Stanford University, students from across the United States and beyond convene to assume roles as world leaders, debating real-world crises and forming critical action plans. Previous topics at competition include the Haitian earthquake, nuclear proliferation, the Arab Spring, women’s rights in the Middle East, cyber-terrorism, AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, and refugee care in developing nations. Student delegates prepare by researching, writing papers, and practicing committee skills in committee simulations. MUN participation incorporates all aspects of politics, international law, foreign relations, and world issues.

The Mini Life Savers Club conducts a great many fundraisers and awareness activities over the school year: bake sales, 40 Days for Life events, the Day of Silence solidarity demonstration, the Sacramento Life Center Salute to Life dinner, Bishop Gallegos maternity fundraiser, Focus on Death Row essay contests, letter writing campaigns, service to the Eskaton elderly facility, and the West Coast Walk for Life. These events are a fun way for Troubies to meet people and make their voices heard. Students, families, parish members, and friends interested in getting involved please contact Club Moderator Mr. Dodson, bdodson@stfrancishs.org who will forward your message to the Mini Lifesavers club president Miss Cara Cooper.

Speech Team

The Speech Team’s Fact Squad and Fiction Squad members are off to a rousing start. At the first tournament of the season, on September 29th for the Capitol Valley Forensic League, the following students were finalists:

Please email team coach Ms. Carrie Dodson, cdodson@stfrancishs.org, for details. Additionally, SF MUN delegates will staff a table at the October 14th St. Francis Open House to exhibit rhetoric and parliamentary procedure, meet parents and students, and answer questions. Please visit stfrancishs. org/mun for information. We hope to see you on October 14th and April 6th!

Stephen Sondheim’s and James Lapine’s Into the Woods by Rachel Kornelly ’13 The cast, crew and musicians of Into the Woods are well on their way in their undertaking of mastering the wonderful works of Stephen Sondheim. The cast and musicians include talented gentlemen from Jesuit High School. They have just completed the first stage of the rehearsal process: learning the music. This has certainly been difficult but not impossible for a cast that has music in their bones. The demanding harmonies and the varying pitches speak volumes to the immense talent that runs through the blood of these students. They are moving on to the next stage: dance rehearsals. This will be an exciting challenge due to the complexity of the size and shape of the set.

@ See the list of donation ideas. Please submit your item or service with a Donor Form. The Auction committee gladly accepts Cash Donations and Underwriting. Deadline for inclusion in the Reverly Program: October 5th.

Thanks to all the volunteers who have already come forward to help with the planning of this event.

The “techies,” as they like to be called, have been working side by side to make the woods come to life. They have built ten platforms at varying levels and are currently working on the construction of a lifelike castle and a giant 40-foot tree that sets the tone for the show. They have been working in the woods for weeks on end giving up their Saturdays to make sure that the set is safe and fun for the cast to be on. The techies and the cast members are not the only ones who give up hours a day to make this musical a success. After all, what is a musical without its music? The orchestra is a vital part in the production. The members spend much of their time making sure that every last note sounds perfect. They, too, are currently learning complex music that comes with Sondheim. Towards the end of our rehearsals we will all come together to bring the show to its full potential.

Many thanks, too, to all the generous sponsors and donors who have come forward to assure Revelry 2012 is a grand success!

St. Francis High School is excited to present this extraordinary musical opening with a Gala performance November 8. Into the Woods runs for two weekends closing on November 17. Special outreach performances are scheduled for area schools on November 13.
