FIRE & ICE 40 “THANKFUL
Each year, the St. Francis community embraces one or two of our Catholic Social Justice Principles and creates a theme. This year our Catholic social justice principle is Care for God’s Creation. With that in mind and reflecting upon Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letters, Laudato Si’ and Fratelli Tutti, we chose the theme “Woven together by the Love of God.”
SCHOOL YEAR PRAYER
Creator God, You brought forth all things and wove your love into creation. We are in relationship with everything, knitted together as a biologically diverse tapestry.
Son of God, You made your way throughout the land.
From simple elements, your miracles came forth for the glory of the Creator.
Spirit of God, Bring healing to our hearts.
Help us remember that rather than a problem to be solved, the world is a joyful mystery to be contemplated with gladness and praise of the Creator.
St. Francis of Assisi - Pray for us. St. Clare of Assisi - Pray for us.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
DEAR ST. FRANCIS COMMUNITY,
This letter marks my first communication in the Pax et Bonum magazine to our students, school families, alumnae and benefactors as President of St. Francis Catholic High School. In my short time on campus, I have been humbled by the warm welcome I have received from students, parents, faculty, staff and our Board of Trustees. I awake each day with joy in my heart knowing that I get to spend everyday at St. Francis High School, surrounded by the most inspirational young women I have ever encountered. I find myself constantly in awe of them – I watch how they learn, how they love and how they lead. Knowing these young women are our future leaders makes me feel as though all is right in the world. Their capable hands, minds and hearts have the capacity to leave our communities near and far, a better place.
You don’t have to look any further than the sentiments of our Class of 2022 Co-Valedictorians to get a sense of what I’m describing. Abigail and Oge are the embodiment of the St. Francis sisterhood that breathes love and life into the worlds of the young women who attend our school. Their words, memorialized in the pages of this issue of the Pax magazine, show the impact of an education rooted in the constant development of faith, excellence, leadership and service. Their awareness and ways of thinking and understanding the world around them indicate so clearly that an overwhelming sense of love permeated their St. Francis education.
Although I didn’t have a chance to know Abigail and Oge, their successes during their four years at St. Francis High School represent all that is achievable when our school and its legacy of love is supported by the generosity of our benefactors. Our donors, at all levels, are the reason we can offer an educational experience that is designed with girls at the forefront of our minds and at the center of all we do. I am humbled by the decision so many made to bless St. Francis with a gift to our school. I thank you and our students thank you!
In the spirit of Pax et Bonum,
Fadia Desmond, Ph.D.

TERM AS BOARD CHAIR COMES TO AN END
Helen Manfredi Pierson joined the Board of Trustees in August 2016 and has served as Chair since July 2020. Helen’s prior involvement as the Chair of the California Ambulance Association, President of the Vallejo Rotary Club and the Charter President of the Holy Spirit branch of the Italian Catholic Federation give her a wealth of knowledge and experience in how to work together with a team to achieve the continued success of St. Francis’ legacy.
“Helen embodies all that a servant leader should be – she placed St. Francis High School and the families it serves at the center of her thinking,” shares President Fadia Desmond. “Her volunteerism on the Board of Trustees showed how much she valued and modeled service to others. As an alumnae board remember, Helen was also a role model to our students; her intelligence, faith, altruism and ability to lead with heart and humor have left a profound mark on the board and our school.”
A TIME FOR THANKSGIVING
St. Francis is pleased to announce Mary Geary Ellingson ’67 as the Board of Trustees Chair. She has served on the Board since 2018. Mary graduated from St. Francis with the Class of 1967 and has been active on the reunion committee since graduation. She has also stayed involved with the school with activities as the mother of two daughters who graduated from St. Francis, Amy ’94 and Sarah ’97.
St. Francis Catholic High School is particularly grateful for the team of accomplished volunteers, many of whom are St. Francis alums, who serve on our Board of Trustees. Our school is truly better for their faithful, and faith-filled, service.

ABIGAIL CONNOLLY
Abby Connolly, a graduate of Holy Trinity School, is a shining example of excellence. She has been very involved with academic teams, Mathletes and Certamen, as well as team captain of Science Olympiad. Abby served on the Ambassador Leadership Board, and in multiple clubs, and received the Pillar of Excellence award her freshman year. Abby is now attending Princeton University.
The following is Abby’s valedictory address given at the Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2022.
Good afternoon, everyone! On behalf of the St. Francis Class of 2022, I would like to thank everyone that made this moment possible. We are so blessed to have our families, friends, and teachers be here with us to celebrate today. From your countless sacrifices to your never-ending support, your presence has been invaluable to our development. In addition to the encouragement of our loved ones, we have been fortunate enough to find a nurturing community within each other, a sisterhood. And boy were we sisters. We laughed, we cried, and we fought, but through it all, we never stopped loving one another. We have come together to achieve more than any of us had ever thought to be possible –winning the concert for our school, navigating distance learning, and speaking up to advocate for our community on campus.
Across 1,558 days together, we have built a unique and indestructible bond. A bond made up of Troubie pride and Winnie spirit that will never fade. From the wise words of Winnie the Pooh himself, “How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” However, this moment today is not a “Goodbye.” That word feels so finite. Today is more of a “See you later,” or as Michael Scott from The Office would say, a “Catch you on the flippity flip.”
Before we part ways, I must emphasize that our graduation is not an end but rather a new beginning. Every Troubie associates the song “At The Beginning” with fond memories of screaming it at the top of their lungs with their best friends at the end of Mass. However, the lyrics have never felt more true as it does
The St. Francis Valedictorian is selected from the top 10 students with the highest GPAs of their graduating class. This year we have two: Abigail Connolly and Ogechukwu Okoye. Both of these young women were so outstanding in their respective pursuits at St. Francis and such amazing representatives of what the class of 2022 has to offer, that the decision to select two valedictorians was natural and unanimous.
with the Class of 2022. For those unfamiliar, the beginning of the song goes, “We were strangers, starting out on a journey. Never dreaming, what we’d have to go through. Now here we are, I’m suddenly standing. At the beginning with you”. When we stood on campus Freshman year, we could have never predicted that we would watch a classmate compete on The Voice or that we would experience a global pandemic, but through it all, here we stand, unafraid of the future, and there is no one else I would rather be here with than all of you.
As we move forward, we must carry with us the four pillars that define what it means to be a St. Francis Troubadour: Leadership, Excellence, Service, and Faith. Not only have we embodied these as individuals but also as a collective. While Seniors tend to be leaders by default due to their experience on campus, our class is one-of-a-kind. Returning to campus after a year and a half of virtual classes, we were called to lead our school while experiencing a slight case of imposter syndrome – I mean we were practically Sophomores going on Seniors. But, we used what we learned from the Thumpers, Pearls, and Simbas and were able to set a wonderful example for the Maries, Tinkerbells, and Vanellopes in our own Winnie way, teaching them how to continue the Troubie legacy. By embodying the values of Pax et Bonum (Hear that Dr. Briggs? I did learn a thing or two from Latin class?) and demonstrating our tenacity, we have gained leadership skills that will benefit ourselves and our communities in all that is to come.
Excellence is about resilience and being a force to be reckoned with. It is an attitude and one that our class has never failed to exemplify at St. Francis. From hunting down spirit sticks to dominating in the Holy Games, our competitive edge has allowed us to push boundaries and succeed in all we have tried. I have no doubt that when faced with barriers in the future, we will never back down and will continue to shatter any glass ceilings placed before us. Or more simply said, we will continue to slay. My hope for our class is that when asked to take a leap of faith, we will do so with open arms and the confidence that we will succeed.
CO-VALEDICTORIAN
10
Service can take on many meanings, whether through small acts of kindness or grand gestures of generosity. From raising funds for the victims of the California wildfires to finding frog memes of affirmation on the bathroom stalls, we have all found ourselves on both the giving and receiving ends of service. I have seen each of us become the hands and feet of Christ as we serve one another, our communities, and people throughout the world. We have practiced our role as Inseparable Companions, empowered by Truth, Justice, and Mercy to selflessly uplift our brothers and sisters. The work we have done here is inspiring and I cannot wait to see how we’ll continue to spread our spirit of servitude.
At St. Francis, we have been fortunate to have shared faith experiences, such as our theology classes, masses, and retreats, like Kairos, where we learned to Live the Fourth every day of our lives. While faith connects us all, it is also an incredibly personal and intimate path. There will be times when we are in close connection with God, but there will also be times when we are
out of sync. In those moments, we should implement the tools we have learned at St. Francis to strengthen our faith and help others do the same. One of my favorite tools is agape. Agape is an unconditional love that will persist regardless of circumstance. I know the Class of 2022 is built on this unconditional love. It is a love we can depend on wherever our journeys may lead.
I’m sure it is no surprise to anyone in this room that there exists an abundance of intelligence, creativity, and determination within our class. Sitting before you all are future doctors, politi cians, artists, authors, teachers, athletes, and CEOs. But we will always be Troubies, more specifically, Winnies. Before I conclude, there are two things I want us all to remember. First, our beloved mascot once said, “If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever.” When we reach tomorrow, and move forward into the rest of our lives, our class will forever remain in all of our hearts. And second, please never forget that “It is great to be an SF Troubadour!” Thank you, I love you, and “I’ll catch you on the flippity flip!”
GRADUATES’ PRAYER McKENNA McKRELL
McKenna, a graduate of St. Mary Parish School, has been an exemplary Christian Service Leader, Kairos student leader, and involved in Campus Ministry all four years at St. Francis. She is active in her parish and volunteers her time with the youth group at St. Mary. McKenna is now attending Harvard University.
The following is McKenna’s prayer given at the Baccalaureate Mass for the Class of 2022.
Dear God, we come before you now as graduates of St. Francis High School’s Class of 2022. We thank you for the blessing of these past four years and ask for your continued guidance as we enter this next phase of our lives.
Your enduring love has shaped our lives immensely; despite individual hardships and a global pandemic, our high school years remain characterized by precious memories, lifelong friendships, the gift of family, and the power of sisterhood.
Our St. Francis education has formed us into people who value your truth and justice – ones who will change the world. Through your grace, we have come to recognize the importance of faith, excellence, leadership, and service – we pray that these virtues continue to serve as pillars of our lives.
We celebrate the beauty of our St. Francis community and the ways our time here has strengthened our relationship with you. Help us maintain a bond of love and friendship with our Troubie sisters, and never neglect your presence in our lives.
We move forward joyfully in a spirit of gratitude, trusting in your wisdom and everlasting care for us. St. Francis of Assisi, Pray for us! St. Clare of Assisi, Pray for us!
FALL 2022 11
OGECHUKWU OKOYE
Oge, a graduate of St. Ignatius Parish School, has been described as genuine, brilliant, kind, optimistic and posessing enormous energy. Whether through achieving stellar grades, her active involvement in St. Francis activities or her substantial community service, she embodies the Pillar of Excellence award won her junior year. She has been Spirit Coordinator, retreat and Kairos leader, a tutor, vice president of the Future Adults Club, and a member of the SF basketball team. Oge is attending the nursing program at the University of San Francisco.
The following is Oge’s valedictory address given at the Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2022.
While I’m standing here in front of all you beautifully unique individuals, I’m reminiscing on the first few weeks of our senior year where I’d constantly hear you guys say “it’s the beginning of the end” or “there’s no way it’s going to go by so fast.” Surprisingly enough, it has ended in the blink of an eye, the four year long roller coaster that has characterized some of the most important stages of our growth and character development. Thankful, although extremely minuscule, is the only word I can think of that captures a piece of my gratitude towards not only my classmates, but the teachers, staff, faculty, parents, and guardians who made this high school experience one with innumerable memories.
When I think of our class, I think of a melting pot, consisting of a diverse group of 253 individuals who each characterize what it means to live by the four pillars of faith, excellence, leadership, and service in their own special way. The one characteristic that I’ve realized truly distinguishes this class from all the others who’ve come before us is the ability to identify and apply your individual thoughts and gifts to situations.
One place I’ve seen that characteristic displayed is in your Faith. You see, Faith has two similar, but distinct definitions. If you were to take a quick search on Google, the first one would state that faith is the complete trust or confidence in someone or something. The second would say faith is a strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof. Over these past four years, I’ve seen each of you demonstrate both, displaying a loyalty unheard of in many others. This includes, your honesty and transparency when we’ve had serious talks on retreats, your proud representation of your respective religions, sexual orientation, and race, and your relentless willingness to trust in the very girls that are sitting right beside you.
I’ve also seen this characteristic displayed in your leadership. Leadership is simply defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization, but you, the class of 2022 have come to completely restructure and redefine what I view as leadership. From the protests to the manual labor of homecoming week,
you have shown me that a leader isn’t always at the front lines, a leader isn’t a role taken by one person, but by many and most of all, a leader is someone who isn’t afraid to make sacrifices and take risks for the ultimate wellbeing of the greater community. You have put greater value on roles that have previously been undermined and undervalued, allowing this generation to take a step toward people no longer being bound and disadvantaged by characteristics of themselves they can’t change.
Now service, this one’s a bit hard to define. Rather than a simple definition, it’s more like a feeling, an act of love. The candy trips to Mr. Poggi’s and Mrs. Cost’s offices, the snack runs to the CLC, and we can’t forget the visits to Wellness (sometimes solely for kinetic sand) – all of these were daily reminders of the impact kind acts of service and outright generosity can have on the lives of others. Our Christian service hours gave us the opportunity to expand our world view, allowing us to become more sensitive and educated on issues affecting society – preparing us to step forth into “a whole new world.” Your detailed experience with service will help you stay humble, especially in the future when you are tested by overbearing individuals who value superi ority over fellowship.
Now don’t worry, I didn’t forget the most important of them all: excellence. In my opinion, this is the pillar most exemplified by our class. I’ve witnessed all of you do just that to excel in your respective areas of expertise as well as push your fellow class mates to unlock their greatest potential. These areas of expertise are extremely broad…the student athletes who will be continuing their sports in college, the artists who will be applying their talents to majors like architecture and contemporary dance, and even the scientists who will possibly create the next cure to an infamous disease. This, I’m sure, will be very handy when you take on new projects and challenges as you begin a new chapter of your life.
As we diverge into different paths, I want you to remember that the memories that you have cultivated over the course of these years serve not only to be comforting thoughts, but they
CO-VALEDICTORIAN
12
also serve as lessons that you can take with you everywhere you go – to guide you when you’re temporarily lost or need a helping hand. More importantly, I want you to remember that none of this would’ve been possible without the selflessness of our parents and guardians. They’ve demonstrated our school year theme to a T: that is to be “Inseparable companions of Truth, Justice, and Mercy.” They’ve been honest with you, even when the truth isn’t something you want to hear. They’ve compromised with you, even if that meant letting the little girl they’ve known for years take her first steps without them standing right behind to support a fall. They’ve forgiven you when you have betrayed their trust, and taught you to forgive when someone has betrayed yours. They have been your role models since day one, showing you how to become the best version of yourself. So, on behalf
of every graduate here, I want to extend my sincere thanks for allowing me to make inseparable companions out of this special group of 253.
With great joy, I close out this speech by thanking you, the class of 2022, for inspiring generations of leaders to step forward into the light and embrace their potential, for taking the risks necessary for change, and for making the last four years of my life and many others ones to remember. As my favorite artist Kendrick Lamar says, “As I get a little older, I realize life is perspective and my perspective may differ from yours. I wanna say thank you to everyone that’s been down with me.” Continue to make your mark on our ever changing world, thank you and I love you. Congratulations, Winnies of the Class of 2022.
BACCALAUREATE ADDRESS AMELIA ABUEG
Amy, a graduate of Silverado Middle School, was a member of the Science Olympiad, NHS and CSF, and was an outstanding member of the St. Francis softball program all four years. In her senior year, Amy led Kairos, became a Big Sister for incoming Freshman students, and was the Master of Ceremonies for our school liturgies. Amy’s organizational skills and friendly demeanor make her a natural leader. It was these leadership skills and her genuine faith that made her a perfect fit to offer the Welcome Address. Amy is attending Loyola University in Chicago, where she plans on being involved in their Campus Ministry.
The following is Amy’s address given at the Baccalaureate Mass for the Class of 2022.
“Good evening. I welcome parents, grandparents, family, faculty, staff, friends, and fellow Winnies to our Baccalaureate Mass. My name is Amy Abueg, and I’m a member of the graduating class of 2022.
When we gathered together for the first time at Freshman Family Mass, Principal Mendoza held up the white gowns we are wearing now as a visual reminder of our goal here at St. Francis – walking across the stage at Memorial Auditorium. On that night, we embarked on our four-year journey. Now, four years later, and with one day to go, we’ve transformed from awkward little freshmen that looked forward to what our time at St. Francis would bring – to leaders on campus with friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
We’ve faced challenges and difficulties throughout our journey but found the strength, resilience, and unity in one another, ourselves, and God to overcome those hard times. Granted, none of us expected a worldwide pandemic, having to spend two years of high school away from each other and glued to our computer screens at home.
However, we persevered and learned to appreciate the times we had together and are so blessed to have had the opportunity to spend our final year on campus again. Tonight’s gathering is our opportunity to thank God for these many blessings.
As we processed into Mass today, students continued the tradition of placing items at the foot of the altar. In doing so, we displayed symbols of the things we’ve been involved in during our time here, for which we are grateful.
Let us take this spirit of gratitude with us in prayer.”
FALL 2022 13
EMMA MAY GORDON
Emma May, a graduate of St. Michael’s Episcopal Day School, was chosen by her classmates to give the Salutatory address. She served as class president all four years at St. Francis and has been consistently recognized by her class as someone who leads through kindness and compassion and is a fearless advocate. Emma May has been Show Choir President for the last two years and is described as having a servant-leader’s heart. She received the Pillar of Leadership two years in a row. She is currently attending the University of Southern California.
The following is Emma May’s valedictory address given at the Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2022.
Salvete Omnes!! That translates to “welcome all.” Please thank Dr. Briggs and four years of Latin for that intro. It is an honor to address the class of 2022, families, and distinguished guests. A few weeks ago I was driving in the St. Francis parking lot thinking about this speech. I had a lot of time to reflect because I accidentally made it to my car at 3:01 instead of 2:58 and there was no way anyone was going to let me out of my spot for at least ten minutes. I thought about how our high school experience has also been like a car, held up on four wheels like our four pillars of faith, excellence, leadership, and service.
We have grown in all of those categories over the last four years, but not necessarily in that order. We grew as students in excellence. Taking rigorous courses in hopes of building adequate resumes for our colleges. We got closer through this, budding friendships with study groups, group chats, and complaining about Hamlet unit exams. We were lucky to take away positive study habits and time management skills from our supportive teachers and classes.
We have also been brought closer together through our faith, even though that journey has been different for all of us. From our God moment circle at Sophomore retreat to our “sacred silence” at Kairos, we have developed our own sense of what religion and spirituality mean to us. We have seen God’s love from the relationships we have formed at St. Francis. We have tried to extend that love to others through service. Taking our time and talents to give back has been very rewarding. We have all identified with different service organizations to work with; whether that be the Sacramento Food Bank, St. John’s Shelter, or a service club at school, we have learned what it means to serve. This affinity for service will hopefully carry on into the next chapters of our lives.
Leadership has also proven to be a big part of our last four years. Yes, this can be seen in more obvious roles as club president, team captain, or student council, but it has also been prevalent in our families as we all took on new roles over the pandemic. Every single person in the class of 2022 has been a leader in their own right.
Our high school experience has been anything but ordinary. No one could have predicted the pandemic or that our lives would be on pause for a year and a half. We all were stripped of something important to us. For me, I know it was the Music
Man play that was never performed. In a strange way, this pandemic brought us together while we were apart. Tiger King, baking bread, running, cooking, reading all became our normal. It was weird how sharing rolls of toilet paper and talking about our daily walks gave us some means of community. We all grew up faster than we should have, taking on new responsibilities in an unprecedented time. I remember how exciting it was to see all of your beautiful faces last year at fake prom. We came and saw some faces we hadn’t seen in over a year – classmates who were older and wiser, more mature.
We returned to St. Francis in the fall of 2021, much different than we were in March of 2020. We tried to adjust to a new normal all over again. We won homecoming after not doing it for two years. It was amazing to see everyone come together. Running around the gym singing the last song of High School Musical 3 at movie night, crying with each other to All In This Together on decoration night, and screaming during the dancing limbo event on sports day. We got to show the freshman and sophomores class spirit. The spirit that brings us to our fierce musical chairs competitions at lunch and parking lot dance parties, which always leave me with joy in my heart and Industry Baby ringing in my ears. A special Winnie spirit that is there at rallies but also in daily life. I see it in seminars when debating themes, at lunch when laughing with friends, and on the field when playing soccer. Every playoff game, competition, or opening night is full of beautiful Winnies with gumption. Every one of you has your special sparkle and that is what makes our class so amazing.
We couldn’t have done it without the outstanding faculty and staff alongside us. Thank you for guiding us and keeping us on track. A very special shout out to Dean Cost, who will answer her email at all hours of the day to keep us safe. I am horrible at deleting emails so I have a fair amount of hers still in my inbox. I will read some of the most memorable titles: “hit and run in gravel lot today - February 25th, 2022;” “Confession pages please stop it now - August 4th, 2020;” “Park in real parking spotsFebuary 8th 2022;” “Keep your shirt on at all times - March 9th, 2022;” “Very important missing notebook November 13th, 2019.” That last one applies to me. When I lost my five-subject spiral notebook two weeks before finals, Dean Cost sent out two

mass emails to the school in hopes of helping me find it. While I unfortunately never found it, I am grateful to this day for her assistance on such a trivial thing knowing her busy schedule. The St. Francis faculty and staff has helped students like me individ ually in many avenues, going above and beyond to help all kids find their notebooks. Thank you for always having our backs and encouraging us to be the best versions of ourselves. We thank you all for your constant love and support.
I would also like to thank our families who have helped us navigate high school, especially our unusual last few years. To those of you who wiped tears, helped us with Zoom, and made us grilled cheese, we love you. We appreciate you more than you know.
Years from now, we’ll be able to reminisce on laughing in the CLC, playing Wii in the rec room, discussing the daily Wordle, performing on the lower Serra stage, debriefing Euphoria on Mondays, waiting in the lunch line, and yes, even navigating the terrifying parking lot. We’ll have new cars that drive to new destinations in new places, but we will never forget what we have had here together. We have now driven out of St. Francis for the last time as a student but the people we met and the experiences we had will be in our hearts forever. I love you, thank you, and congratulate you. Winnie once said, “Always remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think, and loved more than you know.” Congratulations Class of 2022.

A CELEBRATION OF GIVING & GIVERS
“For it is in giving that we receive.” St. Francis of Assisi
DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT MARYANNE KELLY
TO OUR GENEROUS ST. FRANCIS COMMUNITY,
Sankofa is an akansha symbol from Ghana that translates, “look to the past to inform the future.” It is based on a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward and its head turned backwards. Okay, it’s also my cat’s name but that is another story.
Sankofa seemed particularly relevant for this Statement of Community support because we are looking to the past – more specifically, our 2021-22 school year. Although the year included some continued pivoting, the steadfastness of our St. Francis Community shone through in countless ways. Through the generosity of time and talent, we saw the return of parent and family service hours. The more than 15,000 hours of volunteerism resulted in the sup port of myriad student activities, thriving parent and grandparent clubs, and engaging community events. Our volunteers made it possible to navigate the transition out of Covid restrictions to a more open and connected community.
Our benefactors loyally and generously supported the St. Francis Fund, our day-of-giving Thankful Thursday, and the return on in-person FUNdraising events. Rooted in a spirit of gratitude, Thankful Thursday holds a special place in my heart as it specifically supports the tuition assistance needs of our students through the engagement of our current families and our alumnae near and far. Our special events brought us all back together to celebrate the wonderful community we have at St. Francis. And through it all, we continued to focus on our endowment and special purpose funds which enable us to build a secure and sustainable future for the Troubies yet to add their names along Alumnae Way.
What is really special about St. Francis is that while we filled our coffers, we also filled our prayer basket. Whether it was the Pack’n Pray event for parents of recent graduates, or the many special intentions shared in conversations or requests, the St. Francis prayer basket was prayed over and for daily. Thank you for continuing to keep our St. Francis family at the forefront of your prayer life.
Like the mythical Sankofa bird, it is impossible to look back without looking forward. As I turn my focus to the future, I am excited about the opportunities in front of us. We are making great strides on the Aquatic Complex and will submit our application to the City of Sacramento in September. The public phase of the campaign will launch in the next year, and soon all will have an opportunity to participate in enhancing our campus facilities so we can foster a vibrant community experience on campus.
Your faithfulness and support are the bedrock of our mission. The 2021-22 Statement of Community Support recognizes all of you – current and past parents, grandparents, alumnae, students, our most generous faculty and staff, and our numerous friends and supporters. Today, as we have for the last 82 years, the commitment to providing a quality Catholic education for girls in a thriving community remains central to the St. Francis mission. Thank you and God bless you.
In the spirit of Pax et Bonum,
MaryAnne Kelly Director of Advancement

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS*
The St. Francis Fund consists of unrestricted annual gifts and is the cornerstone of philanthropic giving at St. Francis Catholic High School, representing the affirmation and commitment of those dedicated to our mission.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION
St. Francis Catholic High School adheres to the highest level of fiscal responsibility and stewardship of its funds, which are monitored by the school administration, managed by the Finance and Business Office and governed through policies approved by the Board of Trustees.
The annual budgeting process is led by the Director of Finance, along with the Directors and Heads of each Department, with the support of the President and the Business Office. This process results in a fiscally responsible annual budget that is approved by the Board of Trustees. The school is audited annually by an independent accounting firm.
With education costs continuing to increase each year, the St. Francis Annual Fund was established to offset the actual cost of a St. Francis education benefitting every student by keeping tuition costs down for all students while enhancing our programs and services — from athletics, to arts, academic teams and student clubs, leadership programs, retreats and offering myriad other enriching student opportunities.
SFHS SOURCES OF OPERATING REVENUES*
Recognizing our desire to meet our current operating needs while building a secure and sustainable future, St. Francis contin ues to make strides in growing its endowment. Endowed giving allows donors the opportunity to support the students and programs of St. Francis Catholic High School in perpetuity. Earnings from our endowment primarily support the tuition assistance program, which welcomes hundreds of Troubadours and their families to experience the tradition of a St. Francis High School education.
Restricted gifts to our Capital Campaign are making the vision for an Aquatic Complex a reality as we prepare to submit our application to the City of Sacramento this fall. The public phase of the campaign will launch in the next year, and soon all will have an opportunity to participate in enhancing our campus facilities.
We recognize the faith and sacrifice of all who invest in the mission of St. Francis Catholic High School, from paying tuition to charitable giving, and we honor that through maintaining the highest level of integrity and transparency in our finances.

Many businesses and corporations match the amount of a donation from one of their employees or retired employees, increasing the value of the gift dramatically. The companies listed here matched the donations to St. Francis received from our alumnae, current and past parents, and friends. Check with your employer to see if your company will match your donation.

ALUMNAE GIVING
A gift from an alumna models the culture of giving we are creating at St. Francis. It recognizes the life preparation she received and her desire to ensure our current and future Troubadours have the same opportunities. We are grateful to the alumna listed below and invite all graduates to consider a gift to invest in their legacy.

CURRENT PARENTS
We remain grateful to our current parents who actively support our mission. In addition to fulfilling their tuition obligation, the majority go above and beyond to provide the financial resources to help other students and enhance the overall St. Francis experience. We appreciate their generosity and thank them for their greatest gift to St. Francis…their daughters.

PARENTS OF ALUMNAE
The continuing commitment made to St. Francis each year by the families of our alumnae is greatly appreciated. This past year the school was the beneficiary of support from both parents of recent graduates, as well as from families whose association with St. Francis began decades ago. Thank you for helping St. Francis maintain our pillars of faith, excellence, leadership, and service.

FALL 2022 37
“Fire & Ice” Melted Our Hearts
After a couple of years, when gathering and celebrating took a back seat to keep our community healthy and safe, our hearts melted during our 16th annual Revelry event appropriately themed “Fire & Ice.”
Our St. Francis community enjoyed an evening of sizzle and chill as they delighted in a guided dining experience while strolling through the beautifully transformed campus. Student performances were enjoyed while diners imbibed an on array of signature adult libations and savored dinner at the adventurous and themed food stations. There were even game stations where they could win a bottle of spirits.
The campus was overflowing with tempting silent auction items, and attendees near and far went away with some fantastic finds. Later in the evening, guests were whisked into the “Fire & Ice” ballroom for a rousing live auction with emcee Kiera Anderson ’99 and auctioneer Jake
Parnell. Everyone joined in for Fund-a-Vision, raising support for our endowed tuition assistance fund that benefits today’s and tomorrow’s Troubies. The evening was capped off with a high-energy dance party!
Thank you to the Revelry Executive Committee for their vision and leadership. This hardworking group was joined by hundreds of volunteers who made sure the evening went off flawlessly. Nothing on campus happens without the teamwork of our dedicated staffulty, from advancement to facilities, arts, technology, finance, and all of our departments, our staffulty were all-in to show our commu nity a great evening while raising support for our Troubies.
One thing St. Francis loves and knows how to do is create community, support our Troubies and celebrate all that makes this a special place! It was wonderful to be back in-person for Revelry, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event to be held on campus on March 4, 2023.

SPONSORS RECEPTION
Sponsors are the wings that make our events soar. An event like Revelry is made possible through the generous support of our event sponsors. Our sponsors were recognized at a private reception on April 7 at Wildwood Kitchen & Bar hosted by Augusta and Kelly Brothers. Sponsors not only got to enjoy each other’s company and visit with school leadership, they received a Fire & Ice themed gift basket to take home and remember the event. We thank Augusta and Kelly for their gracious hospitality.
