President’s Message Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Catholic High School, It is with grateful hearts that we present the 2016-2017 Annual Report. As I reflect upon the previous year’s success and the generosity of so many, I can’t help but recall the words of our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, “Remember when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received, only what you have given: A heart enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage.” Indeed, we have so many within our community who have demonstrated their love for our school through their acts of service and charity. I am humbled by the sacrifice and courage of so many – parents and grandparents, alumnae near and far, faculty and staff, and our Troubadours – whose support for our mission continues to shape the lives of young women. Enjoy this special edition of our magazine and observe the jubilant faces of our 2017 graduates who reflect all that is beautiful, holy and good at St. Francis Catholic High School. Notice the elated guests enjoying our biggest fundraiser of the year, Revelry. Ponder the vignettes from a sampling of those who generously share their treasure explaining their motivation for supporting St. Francis. We welcomed our new principal, Mr. Elias Mendoza, on July 2nd. He brings a wealth of teaching and administrative experience, and we are thrilled he has joined the team. He has been a member of our community for the past two years sharing with us his greatest gift--his 11th grade daughter, Sophia. We look forward to the places he will lead us as we work together to graduate young women who change the world. We are gearing up for a great 2017-2018 year and the myriad opportunities we will have to continue to advance the mission of our beloved school. Known as “Thankful Thursday,” October 12th will be a special day as our community celebrates all that we are thankful for at St. Francis. During this exciting 24-hour period, we ask our entire community to make a gift to help defray the cost of tuition for ALL of our students and provide additional tuition assistance to those students in greater need. All our Troubadours will be involved, so watch for exciting email updates and videos from campus, building up to and on that day! We know that we cannot do God’s work alone. We need you. As you read through these pages, glimpse the joy and love that thrives across our community, celebrate the accomplishments of our students, and appreciate the generosity of our benefactors. As the legacy of our school continues to grow, and on behalf of the Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, staff, students and parents, I thank you for the part you have played in helping us do the Lord’s work in the example of St. Francis of Assisi.
In the Spirit of Pax et Bonum,
Theresa Rodgers

Welcome, Mr. Mendoza! We began the 2017-2018 school year by warmly welcoming our new Principal, Mr. Elias Mendoza. His comprehensive record of professional experience, teaching and school leadership have made him an invaluable addition to the St. Francis community already! A highly qualified school administrator, Mr. Mendoza had been serving in the Elk Grove Unified School District for the past 14 years in a variety of capacities, including Vice Principal, Social Science Department Chair, and Co-Coordinator of the English Language Learner Program at Florin High School. He possesses a strong background in curriculum and instruction, Professional Learning Communities, technology implementation, athletics, and expertise in long-range planning and facilities management. Mr. Mendoza has an uncompromising view that all students can learn when provided a positive learning environment which welcomes exploration and enhances student confidence. His expertise with Professional Learning Communities will support St. Francis’ commitment to improved student learning and utilization of data across the curriculum. Mr. Mendoza attended Catholic schools in his native Mexico which instilled in him a deep faith and love for Catholic education; his daughter Sophia is a Junior at St. Francis. He sees education as a moral imperative and vows to continue to honor its legacy by maintaining high academic standards and instilling the Gospel values of Jesus Christ.
“As a recent transplant to St. Francis Catholic High School, I am amazed by the sense of community that exists throughout our school. I’ve witnessed firsthand how our faculty and staff support one another during times of need. We do more than just talk about our mission; we are committed to demonstrating to our young women what it means to uphold the values of Jesus Christ. I am proud to be a member of the St. Francis community and consider myself fortunate to be a part of such a dynamic school.”
St. Francis Appoints New Board of Trustees Member
Celia Puff
Celia joined the Board of Trustees in 2017. She is President and CEO of TeleDirect Communications, a national Business Process Outsourcer. Her commitment to clients is evident in everything she does. Celia’s daughter Kristen graduated from St. Francis Catholic High School in 2016. When asked to share her fondest memories as a parent, Celia noted, “Attending Masses, particularly the Baccalaureate, always blessed and encouraged me watching more than 1,000 young women sing and praise God.” She is excited to continue serving the school and our Troubadours in her new Board capacity. “The legacy I bring back as a board member embodies the service of
the Catholic faith — to bring hope, charity and strong Catholic-centered beliefs to a diverse group of young women that will impact their communities and families,” she noted. Celia truly lives her life motto, “Follow your dreams and know that you deserve to have them, serve others in the Catholic tradition and always do the right thing no matter who the benefactor is.” Fall 2017 5

Our graduates and their families gathered together in celebration on May 23rd for the Baccalaureate Mass on campus and on May 25th for the Commencement ceremony at Memorial Auditorium.
“I pray that you live all that we at St. Francis have modeled and taught you – to be women of faith, excellence, leadership and service. Remember your Stitch family, remember your St. Francis family, and remember that you will always be St. Francis Troubadours.
You are changing the world. You are Pax et Bonum. May God bless you on the exciting journey ahead.”

VALEDICTORIAN
Kayla Wehner Kayla Wehner, a graduate of Twelve Bridges Middle School, is in the top 5% of her graduating class at St. Francis. She played water polo, was on the swim team all four years and was a member of Model United Nations all four years as well. She is a youth group leader at her church and participated in many mission trips to Central America where she served those most in need. Kayla received the United States Navy ROTC Scholarship for the University of Southern California where she hopes to study international relations and foreign affairs. The following is Kayla’s valedictory address given at the Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2017 on Thursday, May 25.
“When I sat down and thought about writing this speech, the first thing that came to mind for me was dreams. Teddy Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” You see, whether we realized it or not, for the past four years, we have been believing in dreams and dreaming dreams for ourselves and for each other. As freshmen we dreamt of becoming a Troubie; we collected all of the crazy socks, mastered the messy bun, and made friendships that will last us a lifetime. And then as Sophomores we dreamt of freedom; we began to get our licenses and drove Fair Oaks with our windows down and music blasting. We felt like we could go anywhere, be anyone, and do anything. Then as juniors we began to dream up lofty goals; we pushed ourselves with intense courses and frustrating standardized tests, we began to see of how much we are truly capable. And now, as Seniors, we dream of what our future holds. So as I stand here today, I ask you all, would you believe in the power that your dream has? For four years the pillars of faith, excellence, leadership, and service have been embedded in our minds: We have faith – faith that allows us to believe in our dreams even when the future seems uncertain. We have had to practice faith during times of uncertainty these past few years: when we were uncertain about high school, we put faith in Mr. Poggi. When we were uncertain about how to get into Naviance, let alone college, we put faith in Ms. Austin and Ms. Lee. We put faith in each other as we prayed for and supported each other when we were unsure what the next day would entail. And we put our faith in God, trusting in His power and trusting in His process. Always remember that there is a God who has a plan and a purpose specifically tailored to you. And it is when our dreams align with God’s will that we become beacons of light in a world that could use some.
10
We strive for excellence. I have seen excellence embodied in every single one of you. Whether it be displayed on the walls of our theatre building in beautiful photos and paintings, or exemplified in the countless hours we collectively spent practicing for Sports Day and preparing the homecoming rally, you portrayed excellence. And so would you continue to set those high standards and refuse to move them, because that is how we develop into people of character, capable of inspiring others and achieving the impossible. So don’t let someone tell you that your dream is impossible. We are leaders, and leaders do not give up. Never give up on that dream you have. It is true – big dreams require courage, action, and the ability to bounce back from failure. However, this generation desperately needs leaders willing to dream and then act on what they believe. Each one of you is a leader in your own way: whether it was leading girls through the retreats that changed your life, or starting a club that gave girls a platform to voice their opinions, or simply being an example of joy, humility, and faith. In each of these positions of leadership you exemplified passion and tenacity. And so would you continue this mindset and refuse to give up on those same passions as you become advocates and voices for some of our world’s largest challenges. And finally we serve others. This class has logged a breathtaking amount of community service hours that were done out of love and kindness. You devoted your spring breaks to helping the people of New Orleans, spent free time teaching young kids to read, and selflessly donated money to our sisters in Ghana. But would this spirit of service not stop when we walk out these doors but continue in your daily lives. It is my prayer that you not only achieve your dreams, but that your dreams touch another life. Dreams take courage to chase after because with risk comes the possibility of failure. But look to your right, to your left, in front of you, and behind you. No matter where you might fall, you are equipped with the support to get right back up and continue moving forward.
And so I would like to say thank you to the teachers and staff of St. Francis for developing our minds and giving us the skills that we will need to accomplish our dreams. And a special thank you to Mr. Poggi; you believed in us, invested in us, and never gave up on us and for that we are all grateful. I would like to say thank you to our families, and especially to mine. There were difficult times and mistakes but you never failed to show us constant love and support. And then thank you for being the world’s greatest cheerleaders as we encountered happiness, excitement, and success. And I would like to say thank you to all of you. You are the most amazing 243 girls I have ever met, and each one of you has inspired me more than you know. I believe in you, St. Francis believes in you, your family believes in you, God believes in you, now all you have to do is believe in yourself. Sitting in front of me is a class full of actresses, athletes, mothers, politicians, lawyers, astronauts, newscasters, engineers. But no matter where we end up, I want you to remember this: we are change-makers and each one of us has something to add to this world that is unique, beautiful, and powerful. As we sang during homecoming week, we’re not your average girls, we’re graduating, changing worlds. We are going to get older and we will have to live life without the comfort of our plaid skirts. And the world may belittle the impact our dreams will have, but know that no matter how small your actions may seem, they are capable of changing a life. As you pursue success, would you keep in mind that all of humanity is equally loved by God and we must remember to show love, kindness, and humility to every person we encounter. In a short amount of time we will no longer be St. Francis students, though we will always be Troubies, and the identity that we have for so long held will change and we will embark on our next great adventure. But hold tight to the memories you’ve made, to the friendships you’ve created, and to the dream that you hold in your heart. As your fellow classmate, it is my hope that each one of you chases after your dream wholeheartedly; remembering to have faith in God, to not be hindered by the impossible, to never give up, and to serve one another. And so I ask you, what is your dream? I know that you have one, so grab onto it, hold tight to it, and never let go of it, because with that dream, you have the power to change the world. So to the class of 2017, Don’t give up I believe in you all a person’s a person no matter how small Now it’s time to move on, the future is near The world better look out and fear the ears!”
GRADUATES’ PRAYER
NAMITA NEDUMALA Beloved Father, You have watched over us since the moment we set foot upon this earth. You blessed us with our moms and dads, brothers and sisters, grandmas and grandpas, and aunts and uncles. You blessed us with the 243 Stitches seated before me now with whom we have laughed, loved, cried, and grown into the spirit of Ohana. We thank You, Lord, because without our family and friends, our biggest supporters, we could never have made it to where we are today. God of Wisdom, we thank You for the gift of our education. We were abundantly blessed with such talented teachers. Without them, we could never have experienced the heartful impact of “Tale of Two Cities,” or the excitement when we actually understood the math in “Hidden Figures,” or when we learned just how distinguished in piety Aeneas was. Eternal Father, help us to be open to lifelong learning. Most importantly, You, our Heavenly Father, taught us just how important You are in our lives. Through Masses and retreats we moved forward in our faith journey. We found compassion and sisterhood when we took a chance and “trusted the process” and You. Lord, we ask that You be with us as we move on in our lives. Help us to remember that as long as we keep You in our hearts, our relationship will never end. As we continue our journey, give us the strength to be leaders with kind hearts and firm wills. Help us to carry out our excellence and make the change that we want to see in the world. Tonight, we graduate as young women ready to take on any challenges that we face. Be with us as we serve our brothers and sisters beyond our St. Francis campus. We humbly thank You for all these gifts and ask You for your continued blessings. We pray this in Your Son’s name. St. Francis of Assisi, Pray for us. St. Clare of Assisi, Pray for us.

Fall 2017 11
SALUTATORIAN
BETSY TANNER Betsy Tanner, a graduate of Gold River Discovery Center, is an amazing young woman, one of deep faith, joy and passion for her class. She was a Kairos Director, Christian Service Leader, SF Ambassador and Camp ReCreation Counselor. She has delighted St. Francis with her gift of dance, performing in the SF Dance Company for three years and serving as a liturgical dancer. Her leadership, gifts in dance, and sincere heart have earned her the love and respect of her peers. Betsy will be heading to Creighton University in fall to study business. The following is an excerpt from Betsy’s salutatory address to the Class of 2017 on Thursday, May 25. “As I walked into the gym for my incoming freshman interview with Mr. Norman, I saw four large banners hanging proudly on the wall showcasing our four pillars: faith, excellence, leadership, and service. To eighth grade Betsy, the definition of these words were: Faith – that I would show up in an acceptable but fashionable skirt length. Excellence – that there would possibly be gluten free, organic, vegan, nonfat, low carb options in the cafeteria. Leadership – that someone would guide me to the right class. Service – that I would be served coffee quickly at Starbucks when running late to school. Luckily, the class of 2017 expanded my definition of these pillars. From them, I have learned the following: Faith – over the last four years with the help of retreats, theology classes, Kairos, Masses and each other, we have each cultivated and embraced our own definitions of faith. Personally, my definition of faith has expanded because of the people God has given me at St. Francis. Being able to witness the courage and strength of our class, experience your love, feel your acceptance and overwhelming joy for life has helped me to better know and see God. It is my hope that in these last four years you have explored how you see God. Excellence – the level of excellence in our class often overwhelms me. Our class strives for excellence not only in school work but in everything that they are passionate about. This high level of excellence that every person in our class exudes is only possible because of the even more overwhelming level of encouragement you give one another. Leadership – each member of our class leads by doing small things with great love. Each of us has learned to lead in our own way, whether being on student council or being a role model to a freshman. However she leads, she does it with love. Lastly, Service. Each girl goes out of her way to help others not only in our community but in New Orleans, San Francisco, Ghana, the Bronx, Los Altos, San Diego and many other places. She serves with humility, compassion and strength, helping others by unselfishly giving her time and talents. In doing this she has learned that the most rewarding feelings often occur when being selfless. Class of 2017, you have shown me 12
what the four pillars of St. Francis really mean, and continually inspire me in the ways you exemplify them every day… Together we have learned a great deal over the past four years. Although I may not be the best in math, I do know how to count to five, and although I have learned much more at St. Francis here’s the top five. First, always save room for Jesus. This rule not only applies when dancing with a Jesuit boy but for keeping Jesus in our lives. Even when life is busy, stressful, hard, happy, rough or amazing, we have learned to keep Jesus in our lives through prayer, fellowship, retreats, Mass and much more. Second, we have learned that we have the best and most supportive teachers who go out of their way to help us succeed…Thank you teachers for all that you have done for us over the past four years – we would not be standing here today if it weren’t for you. Third, we learned that a person’s a person no matter how small. As freshmen we were nurtured by upperclassmen and received sympathy from teachers when we walked into the wrong classroom. Although we may be the same height as we were freshman year, we have learned to value every person no matter how small as people of God. Fourth, we have learned to do what “Dodson Says” – he taught us how to love ourselves for who we are, to love others and to love God. Lastly, as “Stiches” we learned that Ohana means family, and family means that we stick together…As an only child I always wanted to have a sister, but I can honestly say I now have 243 of them…You have made me feel loved, encouraged, appreciated, cared for, and challenged. I will never forget you. Ever since freshman year we have been singing a song that gets more lively and meaningful every time it is sung. One of the verses says, “In the end I want to be standing at the beginning with you.” Today is the beginning because we are standing together, bonded more than ever before. As we leave here let us never forget the bond that we have made over the last four years… Class of 2017, you have made such an impact on the St. Francis community, your parents, friends, and all you meet in countless ways. I know this because you have all made an impact on me. I would not be who I am today without you. I am so blessed to know each of you. I love you all. Thank you and good night.”

Dear Friends of St. Francis, The Annual Report edition of the Pax et Bonum magazine is always special as it provides a platform for recognizing all of you — alumnae, current and past parents, and our numerous friends — for your partnership in the mission of St. Francis Catholic High School. With your help in 2016-17, we witnessed many wonderful transformations, beginning with the 244 members of the Class of 2017. In addition to the $1,710 scholarship each student received last year, we were able to provide nearly $1,500,000 in additional tuition assistance to families with financial need. Our school was beautified and modernized in countless ways with upgrades to six classrooms, new collaborative whiteboard desks for the computer lab, new draperies for the theatre, enhanced security cameras and lighting in the parking areas, pop-up tents for athletics and a state-of-the-art scoreboard. We also raised funds to enable us to create a sacred space for when we come together as a community for Masses, assemblies and other school-wide events. We hope you will join us for a Mass or assembly to witness the spirit of the girls and see these enhancements. It was a busy summer on campus so that our Troubadours could come back to new bathrooms! (Yes, we did “flush” away some of the funds). The SBO officers and all students will enjoy a new student activities office overlooking Serra Court. The excitement on campus is palpable with more than 1,070 young women ready to experience Pax et Bonum and all that St. Francis offers. Your continued investment in St. Francis and our Troubadours provides the essential funds needed for tuition assistance for students in need, enriched academic programs, life changing faith experiences, top tier arts and athletic offerings, provision and upkeep of superior facilities, and other expenses not covered by tuition. If you are interested in making a donation as part of the 2017-18 year, please visit www.stfrancishs.org/giving or contact the Advancement Office at 916-737-5033. With heartfelt gratitude,

“There is no better investment than your children’s faith and education, and St. Francis offers both. And while there are other college prep schools that offer excellent curriculums, no one else offers the opportunity to shape your daughters’ morals, ethics, and spiritual well-being. This exceptional atmosphere extends to the faculty and staff who show selfless interest in the welfare of all their students. Giving to St. Francis makes you feel more ownership in the community and extends the blessings and opportunities to others in need. Giving inspires everyone in our family, not just the Troubies, to take part in everything St. Francis offers…Masses, Eucharistic Adoration, athletic and arts events, and community celebrations. At each and every one of them, we feel so appreciated and welcome... like part of the family.”

“St. Francis respects young women, providing them with truth and sound Catholic values. Every young lady should be afforded the opportunity to see herself through the eyes of her Creator! St. Francis offers a breadth of extra curricular activities that has allowed Mary to explore new avenues of personal growth, from lacrosse to Academic Decathlon, to Spirit Week, to Ministry Leader, while at the same time being a place where you can bring a dinosaur lunchbag to school.”

“Being able to donate to St. Francis is important to me because I am helping the school continue to transform freshmen into young women who are ready to make their mark on our community. I am giving back to my St. Francis sisters so that they too can grow through opportunities such as our athletics teams, retreats, and of course a variety of academic courses. Most importantly, donating to St. Francis is something I enjoy because it means the school will continue to spread its four pillars, Faith, Excellence, Leadership, and Service, in Sacramento and at our sister school in Ghana, Africa.”

“Giving back to St. Francis is simply an expression of who I am. I love to lend a helping hand, to learn, and to lead in whatever I do. I am passionate about leadership and doing my best for a community that has allowed me so many opportunities I could not get anywhere else. The growth and experiences I’ve had here are undeniable. And now, I can’t help but want the same for my Troubie sisters.” Maya solis '18 “My parents, who were migrant farm workers that immigrated to the US in the 1940's, would be extremely proud to know that Maya had the privilege to attend a college preparatory high school. Giving to St. Francis is an honor and a privilege, considering the opportunities that she has been afforded while attending St. Francis. Because Maya has been blessed with these opportunities, she will be the first in our family to acquire the leadership, academic, physical fitness, and community service skills to qualify as a potential candidate to a US Military Academy.” Maria solis Fall 2017 23

“I give because I am grateful for all the support and encouragement from my closest family, friends, and the donors from whose generosity I greatly benefited during my years at St. Francis. “As a proud and grateful Troubie, I support St. Francis so that more young women can have the opportunity to choose and experience the benefits of a faithenriched, all-girls high school. This experience nurtured and changed my life and remains a core part of who I am to this day. Parents of Alumnae
The continuing commitment made to St. Francis each year by the families of our alumnae is greatly appreciated. This past year the school was the beneficiary of support from both parents of recent graduates, as well as from families whose association with St. Francis began decades ago. St. Clare
Legacy Society The St. Clare Legacy Society honors donors who have made St. Francis Catholic High School part of their legacy, ensuring that future generations of young women can call St. Francis home and benefit from an exceptional faith-based education program. St. Clare of Assisi taught us much about the calling to a blessed life of holiness. Her indomitable will to lead the simple, gospelinspired life St. Francis taught her was underscored by a genuine passion for humility and the poor. An ardent prayer warrior, Clare demonstrated a courageous resistance to the ever-present pressure to dilute these ideals. Her generous concern and care for her sisters was a hallmark of her ministry. Clare’s influence was such that popes, cardinals, and bishops often came to consult her although Clare herself never left the walls of San Damiano. We invite you to join the members of the St. Clare Legacy Society by naming St. Francis Catholic High School as a beneficiary in your will and estate plans. Your generosity will make a positive and lasting impact on the future of St. Francis by enabling us to fulfill our mission to educate young women to change the world through faith, excellence, leadership and service.
“Go forth in peace, for you have followed the good road. Go forth without fear, for He who created you has made you holy, has always protected you, and loves you as a mother. Blessed be you, my God, for having created me.” St. Clare of Assisi
You can become a member of the St. Clare Legacy Society by: • placing St. Francis Catholic High School in your will • making St. Francis Catholic High School the beneficiary of a retirement account • making a gift of life insurance policy • creating a charitable gift annuity • establishing a charitable trust Please join the members of the St. Clare Legacy Society in leaving a bequest to St. Francis Catholic High School.

On Saturday, April 29, 2017, we celebrated our 11th Annual Revelry Gala & Auction as St. Francis Catholic High School was transformed into the Roaring 20s for a gorgeous evening of Puttin’ on the Ritz. We raised more than $300,000 for our Troubadours, continuing Revelry’s success and demonstrating the incredible generosity of our community! We enjoyed a beautiful spring evening as guests were greeted at the entrance by a 1920s Ford Model A, strolled through Speakeasy crates, and dined under a chandelier made of feathers and pearls. Our Show Choir and SF Players entertained the room with a fantastic rendition of Puttin’ on the Ritz. It was truly a roaring good time! The evening was a culmination of a year-long effort by our hardworking Revelry committee under the leadership of our magnificent chairs, Stephanie Prather Wetch (Halena ’19) and Chyrissee Lee ( Jasmine ’20). More than 50 of our amazing parents demonstrated their talents and creativity in committee positions from silent auction acquisitions to live auction, decorations, dishwashing, donation entry and pick-up, set-up, and clean-up! An additional 250 parents volunteered the days leading into
the event and the night of Revelry to make it a success. We are forever grateful to our incredible community! A very special thank you to our Revelry Sponsors, especially our Platinum Sponsors, Rick & Angela Lavezzo (Madalyn ’16, Emalee ’19), Celia Puff (Kristen ’16), and Rob & Nancy Sbisa (Lia ’12, Pilar ’15, Maya ’18), for their continued commitment to the mission of St. Francis Catholic High School. Joining our Platinum Sponsors were many St. Francis families, friends, and alumnae who supported Revelry through various sponsorship levels. “Hands Up for Troubies” which focused on creating a truly sacred space for our community activities, raised more than $25,000. Through the generosity of our Revelry guests, we can enhance the use of our gym space and enable more people to participate in liturgies, assemblies, prayer services, and athletic and special events. Revelry has become the school’s largest fundraiser and provides the essential funds to enhance opportunities for growth in a faith-filled, college-preparatory academic environment. This environment prepares our Troubadours for success in college and life beyond. Fall 2017 39
